If you saw the trailer for the upcoming 3DS Kirby game, you would know that Nintendo is still playing up the 3D capabilities of the system in a big way.
Shame it's not coming to retail. The Japanese retail version comes with a soundtrack CD that not only includes all of the songs from the game, but several tracks from the previous games as well.
It seems like a slap in the face to 3DS owners that they're giving us the significantly downgraded GBC ports of the Mega Man X games when the system is more than capable of running the original SNES versions in all of their glory. There's no good reason that anybody should want to play Mega Man Xtreme over the real version of Mega Man X. Xtreme has worse graphics, controls, and music, but the worst part about it is the extremely low screen resolution. Mega Man X was originally designed to be displayed in 256x224 resolution, so cropping the viewing area down to a 160x144 window absolutely kills its playability.
Abstraction Games is doing the 3DS port? What happened to Renegade Kid offering to do it? I've never even heard of Abstraction Games before now, and judging by their products page, Renegade Kid is far more qualified.
I always seem to get caught up in the hype whenever a new GTA game is coming out, but I never end up playing them for very long. The gameplay is just too boring. The driving and shooting elements don't control particularly well and make the missions play very poorly, the open ended design just makes the game feel dull, and the games have poor framerates (even on a PC with monster specs, at least for GTA4),
The Wiimote pointer is even better than a mouse when it comes to moving a cursor around the screen. With a simple movement of your wrist, you can move the cursor anywhere you want on the entire screen instantaneously with extreme precision. Dragging the cursor with a mouse is a bit slower and less accurate in comparison. When it comes to reticule-based shooters, I'd take the Wiimote and Nunchuk over Mouse and Keyboard any day. Mouse still beats Wiimote when it comes to controlling a first person camera (as in FPS games), though.
@WaveBoy While I agree that the console versions of the game should be ignored because they're only 30 fps, I have the game on PC and it's not really as bad as you make it out to be. The controls aren't the greatest but they still work pretty well, and the level designs and mechanics are pretty fun and inventive.
Criticizes developers for making outstanding series updates that "don't do anything new" (which isn't even true in Contra 4's case — the grappling hook was new and added lots of depth to the gameplay)..
Creates a bad God of War clone with a terrible framerate and slaps the Castlevania name on it.
Maybe, but the key point is that it isn't very fun to play. It lacks a hook that compels you to keep playing the game and improve your score.
I apologize if my first comment came off as unnecessarily harsh, but I really don't like seeing these types of games being turned into commercial products because they cause the entire handheld market to become devalued. Lots of people think that eShop games are overpriced at $5-$10 because they can buy Newgrounds quality flash games on the Iphone for a dollar, without caring that the eShop's games are far more substantial and give them far more value for their money.
@HugoSmits There was strategy involved, with positioning yourself so that you don't get trapped on a narrow platform, risk/reward of going for high up pieces to get more points, and going for colored pieces to rebuild the lower platform. The various falling speeds also added to the game's complexity. Maybe your game had similar elements added later on, but to be honest it didn't hold my attention long enough for me to find out. I played it a few times until I got a pretty good run going, and after that I had had enough.
@HugoSmits I don't have those games on DSiware but I did play them in Wario Ware. I really liked Pyoro, it had a lot more depth than your game and its mechanics were more satisfying to master. I didn't really care for paper airplane. Your game reminds me of one of the countless flash games I played on Newgrounds 10 years ago. I would never spend time or money to play it today.
@Kodeen The developer's comment being discussed, which is the basis for this article, says that it's not coming to the Wii U because the system isn't powerful enough to handle it. They don't say anything about not making it for business reasons, so I don't know why you keep bringing that up. If they're not making the game for Wii U due to its low install base they should have just said that, rather than make an excuse which makes their company look incompetent.
Sounds like "Codemasters" aren't masters of coding at all, if they can't get the game to run on a more powerful platform. Maybe they should change their name to "Code Novices"
@SteveW Agreed! These Game Gear games always suffered due to the system's low resolution. Blind jumps, cheap deaths, and a general lack of orientation abound as a result of the zoomed-in visuals. If a Game Gear game was originally developed for the Master System, well, I'd much rather play that version.
I imported all three Rainfall games from Europe so that I wouldn't have to wait almost a full year for each of them to come out in North America. All three games were successful in NA anyway so I guess they didn't need my sales after all. This wouldn't be an issue if Nintendo was better at localizing their games for all markets and releasing them in a timely manner.
Playing Super Mario Bros on the Ouya is completely legal, as long as you dump the rom from your own cartridge, as per section 117 of the US Copyright Act of 1976. http://www.bitlaw.com/source/17usc/117.html
Whenever I see DLC, one of two thoughts enters my mind: either the extra content is something that could have been included in the original release but was held back for the sole purpose of making the publisher more money, or it was something that was originally cut from the game because the developers felt it wasn't good enough to be included. I guess I'm just too cynical to ever spend money on DLC.
I can't get over how dumb Square Enix was for not creating Kingdom Hearts 3 for the Wii at the height of the Wii's popularity. It would have been a perfect match for the Wii's audience, and with its massive userbase the game would have sold millions upon millions of copies and restored Square Enix to their former glory. Instead, they're on the verge of bankruptcy after being forced to merge with a mediocre Western publisher, and now spend most of their time creating iphone shovelware in order to stay afloat.
Nintendo games and indie games are really the only things that interest me as far as future games are concerend. Creatively bankrupt console shooters and "cinematic" garbage games can screw off. As far as Nintendo is concerned, I wish they had spent more time showing upcoming 3DS games (although I understand their need to focus on the Wii U).
When I saw the Sonic image I got all excited thinking we were finally getting the 3D remake of the Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog, only to find that it's just a port of the crappy Game Gear version which suffered heavily due to the Game Gear's low screen resolution. I think it's disgusting that Sega's holding back their excellent 3D remakes from us.
No, just no. The Last of Us is the very antithesis of what video games should be. It's a B-quality action movie with gameplay slapped on as an afterthought. If I want to enjoy something like that I'll just turn on the SyFy Network instead.
Won't be buying this. Can't reconcile the poor framerate. Sad, because DKCR is one of my favorite games ever and I'd love to play a portable version that lives up to the Wii game.
That gameplay video looked horribly sluggish and choppy. People need to stop trying to port Wii games to the 3DS if the 3DS isn't capable of running them acceptably.
What's this guy thinking? 3DS is amazing for smaller games like PixelJunk. His company even created many small, simple games for DSiware such as Trajectile, Starship Defense, and Digidrive.
Is the game really zoomed out as far as it is in those screens? I really don't see how that could work on the 3DS's 400x240 screen. All the sprites would have to be shrunken down to a few pixels wide.
I disagree with the writer's comment that motion controls won't be missed. To me, shaking the Wiimote and Nunchuk to perform the ground pound maneuver was immensely satisfying and a hell of a lot more fun than simply pressing a button. I didn't have any problems doing the roll move either, for me it worked equally as well as pressing a button. I'm probably going to give the 3DS version a pass because the framerate isn't as smooth as the Wii version's.
