Re: Soapbox: Grinding Is Poor Gameplay Design That Doesn’t Respect Your Time

Zebetite

As long as have developers have quotas to meet and executives breathing down their necks, want to reach a certain gameplay length for the sake of a store page/box selling point, or are just plain lazy, grinding and content padding will exist in some shape and form. This problem has existed before many people on this site were BORN, and it's a problem that will continue after we're gone as well.

Re: Feature: Switch Puts The Arcade Of Your Dreams In The Palm Of Your Hand

Zebetite

@masterLEON Just keep in mind that the people who actually made these retro games aren't making a dime off of these ports and remasters. The money from your purchase goes to corporations and third parties. If you want to purchase these games on modern platforms, you have every right to, but whether or not emulation is used has zero impact on the decision to port these games, aside from spawning lawsuits when a company doesn't want the competition. Hi Sega! Hi Nintendo!

Re: Capcom Shows Off More Footage Of Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection

Zebetite

I played enough of these needlessly punishing games back in the day that I can live without this. Game design back then was pushed by the desire to get more quarters or pad game length, it's not something that needs revisiting. Of course, if they decide to put microtransactions in this then we'll have come full circle.

Re: Zelda Voice Actress Patricia Summersett Speaks Out About Online Negativity And Criticism

Zebetite

I mean, we're talking about the same fanbase that performed a DDOS attack on a reviewer's website for DARING to give Breath of the Wild a 7 out of 10. "Gamers" engage in borderline and outright criminal activity over stupid electronic products and don't really deal with the consequences of their actions. Everyone in this comments section who's dismissing her "thick skin" comments should think about the behavior they're enabling.

Re: Feature: Why Open A Video Game Shop During A Global Pandemic?

Zebetite

@Andy_Witmyer People like you are precisely why many folks live in fear. As the last year has shown, all it takes is one mask-defying idiot to infect dozens or hundreds of people. Heck, that term you've misappropriated, branch covidians, is traditionally used to refer to religious people spreading the disease - because in a pandemic it's totally worth cramming people into pews and seats at the risk of their health, thinking that faith will somehow protect them. Considering the number of parishioners that have died, it clearly hasn't.

Call it "living in fear" if you want, but I'm going to protect myself from people like you, thanks.

Re: Nintendo Cancels Splatoon 2 NA Open Livestream, "Free Melee" Believed To Have Played A Part

Zebetite

@BowtieShyGuy Actually, fans held their own Splatoon tournament finale, raised TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS as the cash prize, and created the most-viewed event in the history of Splatoon. Google Endgametv, the streamer for the event.

Now fans are hyped for the future of the Splatoon competitive scene after collaborating with Smash fans and showed that Nintendo's influence isn't needed for the community to thrive. Why the hell isn't NintendoLife covering THAT!?

Re: Square Enix Announces SaGa Frontier Remastered, Launches On Switch In Summer 2021

Zebetite

@KimBread My apologies for being that guy and saying "Actually", but the series has had weird cyberpunk elements from the start, with the SaGa/Final Fantasy Legend trilogy on Game Boy.

Man, what I'd give for a remake of those games - nothing else lets you have a mutant, a dragon, and a robot in your party, or kill god with a chainsaw.

That said, this is a day one purchase for me.

Re: Huge Capcom Leak Suggests New Final Fight, Power Stone, Mega Man And Dragon's Dogma Games Are Coming

Zebetite

Of course, any value this list has is invalidated by the fact that we and by extension competitors get to see it. Capcom would be fools not to switch up their plans after this occurred.

Leakers are scum. If a game or an announcement or whatever is going to happen, it'll happen. Knowing ahead of time or having a release date move doesn't really change anything in the long run, does it? Ugh.

Re: Review: Control: Ultimate Edition - A Highly Convincing Proof-Of-Concept For Cloud Gaming On Switch

Zebetite

Many people like to live beyond the immediate moment. You'll be able to play Mario Kart in 10 years, any of them. This will be dead and gone by then. Even putting aside the inability to keep something for posterity with this design choice, being so cavalier about not owning the things like that you purchase, like some folks are, is how consumer rights are eroded. I can only speak for myself of course, but the possibility of having any digital good, of any kind, arbitrarily taken away from me because of forces beyond my control is kinda chilling in my eyes.

But then, I grew up in the days when you purchased a product, it was a physical product, and you were free to do as you pleased with it while it's in your possession. It's kinda sad that this can seem "old-fashioned" these days.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Comfort Food Game?

Zebetite

For me, it's old-school shooters of any kind. Getting in the zone and filling the screen with bullets, mine and the enemy's, will always relax me. Currently on my plate are Nova Drift and Ginga Force over on Steam, and I'm revisiting classics like U.N. Squadron and R-Type as well.

Re: Ninjala Season 3 Arrives, Adds New Arena, Weapons And Spectator Mode

Zebetite

@TimboSlice Cosmetics affect the gameplay, because players want to look cool while they're pulling off cool stunts. And games such as this are designed to entice players into spending, either with constant advertising of items for sale or using other players as walking billboards for the neat items available for real money. No developer on earth puts a cash shop into a game and expects players NOT to buy into it.

I could go on for a while. But then, anyone who unironically spouts "It’s all cosmetic!!!" is part of the problem. Carry on.

Re: Interview: "There Would Be No Control On Switch Without The Cloud," Says Remedy

Zebetite

I'm hoping this crashes and burns so that consumer-hostile practices like this avoid the Switch for a little longer. I'm well aware that such sleazy corporate antics are inevitable, but the less the better for the moment. Between Nintendo's legendary output and magnificient indie games (which sell very well), Switch isn't a system that needs third-party "AAA" games to survive.

Re: Ninjala's Cosmetic-Only Sonic Skins Cost An Eye-Watering £16 Each

Zebetite

@FX102A You're absolutely right. If cosmetics don't matter, why do people put so much effort into making their characters look cool? Oh right, because it enhances the game experience to look awesome while doing awesome stunts.

There's some free games that are honest and reasonable with their cash shops, but those are like unicorns in this market.

Re: Ninjala's Cosmetic-Only Sonic Skins Cost An Eye-Watering £16 Each

Zebetite

I can't imagine the game's doing too well if they're trotting out overpriced cross-promotions like this. I mean, On Smash the mii costumes make for fun references and they're cheap to the point of being trivial for most people. On this game, considering Sonic isn't the most successful brand out there, it reeks of desperation.
