The announcement of Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection certainly came out of the blue. While the franchise was once one of Capcom's most famous efforts, it has fallen by the wayside in recent years, so it was a nice surprise to see the Japanese veteran dust this one off for another adventure.
The hosts of the Japanese Capcom TV channel got chance to see the game in motion recently, and while we're still not 100% comfortable with the new visual style, it would seem that Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection has lost none of the series' penchant for challenging gameplay.
Sure, Arthur can take three hits now before he dies, but the level designs appear to be as demanding as ever. calling for pixel-perfect jumps and precision attacks. Expect to hurl a few controllers at the wall if you're planning on picking this one up early next year.
You can watch the footage below, and the segment in question starts from around 1 hour, 17 minutes in. Prior to that, footage of Capcom Arcade Stadium is also shown.

Part of me wants it but I know I'd never beat it.
Like, I've played challenging games before, this game looks like it will dial that up to 11 and I'm pretty sure the stress would kill me.
", it would seem that Ghosts 'N Goblins Resurrection has lost of the series' penchant for challenging gameplay."
I believe you mean "Has not lost"
Yeah, I'm definitely in.
I would also buy a Maximo port. DO YOU HEAR ME CAPCOM?!! ❤️
It'll hand my backside to me, but I am still very much in, obviously
Great to hear but at the same time I can still see myself preferring the Sprite art and the arcade version doesnt take much to get running
I'd love to see maximo get revisited, along with viewtiful joe and mostly importantly dino crisis
Looking good
I'm not keen on the visuals and I'd say the originals are much more appealing on that front. The gameplay looks to be on point though and I'll be giving it a go
Watching that Red Arremer zip away in a mini-cutscene makes me think that we might see a new breed of one as a boss. It'd be pretty wicked if it turned out to be Firebrand and he uses his various Crest powers on you.
Best looking GnG game since ghouls on sega. I’m like 99.9% sold on it, I’ll wait for the reviews. That said, it looks pretty good so far
"Really promising"? It looks like a flash game on Internet Explorer! Or maybe a free-to-play mobile game. I wonder if you have to watch commercials to unlock stages.
Looks great! Slthough i do hate the slow running movement but suppose that adds to the hardness!
Lookin real good
Huh. I'm liking the visuals. I think Arthur's animation is looking pretty awkward but that's probably for authenticity.
To anyone who has ever used Adobe After Effects, this game looks like they made one “doll” version of every character/ enemy then used the puppet tool for all of the animation.
I want to be excited about it because I appreciate the series, but I don’t see enthusiasm or money being put onto the screen this time.
The paper pin animation is growing on me. The intro of it being hand drawn into a book then fleshed out into gameplay really sells it. I would prefer pixel art, but it looks fine. I guess. Yeah, the gameplay looks great. It's a while I've played it, but could you always shoot downwards? If not, that's probably a very welcome addition. (Mind you, if you always could...I never used it lol)
I’d probably never make it past level 2 in this game, just like the original, but I might just get it to enjoy the art style in action. I am in love with these visuals.
Im so ready to buy this and beat this game
@GrailUK You could fire up and down in Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts, but not the original Ghosts ‘n’ Goblins and they removed it from Super GnG and replaced it with a double jump too.
Looks awesome! Will get it, won't beat it, but I'll surely try!
@BulkSlash Ahhh ty. That's why I'm hazy. I kinda remember it, but then kinda don't (I played em all so I hope you get what I mean hahah) Cheers
Looks great, really glad that Capcom is reviving this series. Gonna play through Super GNG to prepare.
I played enough of these needlessly punishing games back in the day that I can live without this. Game design back then was pushed by the desire to get more quarters or pad game length, it's not something that needs revisiting. Of course, if they decide to put microtransactions in this then we'll have come full circle.
Looks like you @ss but otherwise meh
Art style aside, this looks great. Been craving something like this for years.
It looks good...I’m just not sure it looks Capcom good, as in the old Capcom that really set the bar for great 2D graphics. I felt mega man 11 was underwhelming in that regard. This at least has more personality than mega man 11, so it’s a bit of an improvement
Oh I'm buying. ... Lil 🔪 'salways the best weapon.
For a game like this, I really think the best art style is 16-bit pixel-art.
Not a fan of the art here. It isn't as good as the original imo. And I say this not because I automatically think pixel art looks better by default but because I don't think they've nailed how this game should look when done in HD as far as I'm concerned. This looks more like it was done by some fans than what the hugely talented Capcom artists are [or at least once were] capable of.
If reviews say that the gameplay is tight I'll forgive the lack of pixels. SoR 4 won me over as well, although I love me some pixels. Otherwise I will just stick to Battle Princess Madelyn - not perfect but made with love for GnG.
The way the first stage screen is gradually painted until it's done is really cool!!
I understand tastes are subjective, but I don't get how the new art style can be considered cheap or low-effort. The visuals evoke memories of classic storybook illustrations for me, and I think that's exactly the effect the devs were going for. It's not unlike how Yoshi titles try to emulate various craft styles - if anything, they can actually be more labour (and thus cost) intensive than just pixel work.
I think it looks great; animation style reminds me of Terry Gilliam/Monty Python or Guacamelee. The only thing I wasn't sure about from the footage was the sound enemies make when you shoot them (sounds like a water balloon making a splat).
Providing it plays tight (60fps, minimal lag), then people should get behind the game!
Video is set to private... 😢
@Kalmaro I have beaten Super Ghouls n Ghosts I think this will be just fine, it may take hundreds or even thousands of lives though lol
I am gonna die when I get this. If I can.
But it looks great! Looking forward to it
Ghosts N Goblins is like bringing up a bully I haven’t faced since I was 12 years old. The constant beat downs after school. That one level I go up the stairs and two unicorns are awaiting me making me loose my armor then having to face the dragon in which I barely survive finally getting my armor only to face the Red Arremer. But with a smile I would gladly love to get a good beat down from resurrection if it holds up to the originals.
