Like pretty much any other developer, Moon Studios would "love" to see its own character make a cameo in Nintendo's all-star brawler, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. We're referring here to Ori from Ori and the Blind Forest and more recently Ori and the Will of the Wisps.
Could it ever happen, though? In a recent interview with IGN, the Moon Studios' co-founder Gennadiy Korol told fans to contact the head of Xbox about it, if they wanted to "make it happen".
"I think all of us at Moon would LOVE to see Ori in Smash and we think that Ori’s moveset and fighting mechanics [would] be tons of fun. I honestly think this could be amazing and you should tweet Phil Spencer about it!"
Ori - like Steve from Minecraft and Banjo-Kazooie - obviously has a history with Microsoft, hence why Korol is asking fans to contact Spencer about it. Ori has already made a cameo in the 2D pixel brawler Rivals of Aether as a DLC fighter.
There are four slots left in Smash Bros. Ultimate's Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Will Ori be one of them? While we admittedly think it's unlikely to happen (and yes, the line-up is already locked in), perhaps Nintendo will incorporate the character as a Mii Fighter Costume or Spirit.
Would you like to see Ori become a playable fighter in Smash Ultimate? Are you interested in more characters with Microsoft ties joining the roster? Share your thoughts down below.

That would be absolutely sick...
We don't need another break free persona like situation, god why do Devs say stuff this?
I could see them in Smash as spirits. That would be pretty cool.
Chief next. Then we’ll talk lol
I'd love Ori, they are crawling into my Top 5 picks.
Still, it was always unlikely and this late into the game there is no way they will get in if it wasn't already decided.
Yeah, the DLC fighters were chosen a long while ago. The chances of him appearing in Pack 2 is slim to none. If they went with a third fighters pass however... But a third would kill Sakurai.
Makes as much sense as Steve.
Would be interesting as a lightning fast fighter.
It’s a cool idea, but I think the cut off has already passed. And do we really need another Microsoft character? Don’t get me wrong they have some really cool ones, but I think the two we already have is enough personally.
Super Microsoft Bruhs
Me over here with a shrine to hollow knight wishing for Sakurai to provide. Probably gonna be a Mii costume If anything. A man can dream.
Jokes aside, that would be sick. Definitely not this fighters pass or even the next one if there is one, but maybe whatever is next. That reminds me, what are they gonna do for the next game? They've kind of put themselves in a situation where if they get rid of some characters, it will already kind of stumble.oh well, we'll see.
Not for Ultimate, that's basically finished, but maybe for:
Super Smash Bros: Sakurai Quits!
@GilbertXI to be honest I don't want another Smash game if they can't bring back all the characters. They could just keep coming up with wave after wave of updates and dlc, and port it over to the next console with some improvements
Is there any developer that wouldn't want their characters in Smash?
As has been already said, Sakurai specifically said they've already been chosen, so.
Ori's design is so bland... it's a white blob. It looks like a rejected Pokémon. What does this character have to offer over the protagonist from Hollow Knight (which Ori's sequel massively cribbed from) or Quote from Cave Story or other influential indie characters?
What does this character have to offer over the protagonist from Hollow Knight...
@Zebetite A given name, for one thing.
I would love to see Ori as well but probably for the next Smash Bros., just not for Ultimate yet.
@GilbertXI Stumble how? I personally have said I would like to see the franchise truly evolve. Maybe reboot it in the sense very little of the usual suspects are involved. Maybe Mario. Maybe Link and a handful of other classic characters. After that, really dig deep into the first party vault for some off the wall characters. Offer some truly unique playing styles and stages.
I mean, I love Smash Bros and what it's come to represent. I've been playing since the start. and it's not to suggest the series hasn't evolved from it's beginnings. But I guess for me personally, I'm not die-hard wedded to anyone on who's been on the roster. At least not in the context of Smash Bros. I love all things Mario and Link. But if the next Smash games had very little of their franchises or aspect of their franchises that have never been used before, but not them exactly, I don't know if I'd lose any sleep
I got my phone I'm ready to tweet my head off.
@UmbreonsPapa no matter how mechanically sound the characters are, it would still be considered a step backwards by most people, ESPECIALLY the competitive community. Which is gigantic I might add. They've written themselves into a corner, that's all I'm saying. This is why I hear people saying that the next smash game should be just a souped up port of ultimate, which I think might be the best way to go, in terms of value, finance, and poor Sakurai and the rest of the teams sanity. Building a game from the ground up, especially a fighting game, no matter how little characters there are, is a gigantic task. Because if there is only a small amount of characters, every single one will have to be perfectly balanced and have to land.
Now, I think smash is technically sound and one of the most balanced fighting games I've played, especially of it's size and scale. Some characters are definetely more balanced than others, but there is no completely broken character like say Bayonetta from sm4sh, or meta knight from Brawl. Getting back to my original point, smash does have some middling or broken characters, and I firmly believe in quantity over quality, but the sheer quantity OF quality among some dull ones is impossible to ignore. It is one of the games I think truly goes above and beyond to deserve the $60 price tag, because I'm hopelessly addicted to the series. Throwing it all away would be a waste of code, models, animations, and quality. I don't know if that makes sense or not, I think weirdly.
Not mention conflicts with story mode, and the purpose of the series in the first place: To bring video game franchises together to beat the snot out of each other. And a celebration of gaming in general. I think it has been like that since Brawl and arguably Melee too. Mario and Zelda(two of my favorite franchises of all time, don't get me wrong) no longer really symbolize nintendo, Nintendo symbolizes Nintendo. ARMS, Splatoon, Pikmin, Metroid, Pokemon, subsidiaries of Mario, Kirby, Fire Emblem, Mother, Kid Icarus etc. the list goes on. The point of Smash is legacy, throwing away the characters and storing them will take away all the achievements and spirits/trophies/whatever, or at least decrease its value. That's the point I was trying to make, Sakurai awakened a dragon unknowingly when he signed that deal with Konami to put Snake in smash all the way back in Brawl, and it would be more trouble than it's worth to try to put it back to sleep now.
Now there could be other ways to make something focused on Zelda or Mario, they did it with Kirby Fighters already. Nintendo is open to the idea of doing this it seems. A fighting game based off of Zelda completely would be a dream come true for me. Maybe not as technically sound as smash, but still with the same ideals. Again, I think quantity only beats quality when there is a large quantity OF quality.
OH BOY do I love to ramble. Sorry about that, maybe I should make a podcast, although I don't consider my voice to be the most soothing...
@Feguy but both Oris are on the switch so it's a little different, right
@COVIDberry Lol, you got me there. Both would be great, they could do a lot with both character's kits from source material. Examples being a soul meter for the Knight(or whatever their name is) and Oris recovery being all that mid jump dash things, don't know what it's called, haven't got around to playing it.
Hahaha oh hell no! Enough Microsoft in my Smash already. Except if they finish the pass with Master chief, that would be ok. Geno has to come first though
@Jmjfrank look at my mammoth comment above and you'll see how I feel about it. Seems like a reasonable way to go, just some port or a straight sequel with massive balance and design changes, with new characters and story mode. When, hopefully before the next smash game lol, MP 4 and BOTW 2 come out, I'd like to see how they change the kit for Zelda, Samus, or even Ganondorf from source material. Like what they did for link this time around. Finally distance Ganondorf from captain falcon.
@Christofu yeah but that might make it worse
I don't mean to toss cold water on this, but aren't the contents of the fighter pass already decided? I thought the characters were set in stone as soon as they announced it, the wait is just a matter of them figuring out movesets, stages, and the like.
It would be very cool but he's already in that indie Smash clone.
Plus, I'd rather get The Knight (from Hollow Knight) in Smash Bros.
Would love this, but I can't see it happening. At least Rivals of Aether has Ori
I thought Nintendo already picked all fighters?
Mm, not my first or even third pick, but it'd be neat. Lord knows the stage would be gorgeous.
Master Chief, Dante, Crash Bandicoot and WaLuigi get my votes but they already have decided on the roster haven't they? So we just have to wait.
After playing Ori 2, I can see it having a pretty amazing moveset! It would be really cool, imo.
However, I don't see it. Two Microsoft characters in a row sounds unlikely xD
I wonder how many studios are lining up to get their characters featured in smash. I can really see this going forever with SSB ultimate definitive edition on Switch 5 with over 300 playable characters
Sounds great to me, would love to see what the little fart could do! Maybe in an ALTERNATE UNIVERSE we would get a certain red head from Playstation to come over; that would rock the Net!!!!
As if all of them haven’t been decided already.
@GilbertXI I'm not really sure what we are talking about here. I'm not commenting on the brokenness or balance of the game. I'm taking about the idea that there can't be a true next edition to the Smash franchise and I am arguing that I think there can be. It's not like there isn't precedence for Nintendo taking a long standing franchise and ripping up the status quo to bring something fresh to them. I get game developing takes time and money. I'm not suggesting they develop a new Smash for release on the Switch. I do think it's worth exploring doing something completely new for the next Nintendo console, which is still a ways a away.
I also don't think it's about having a smaller roster. It's about having a more diverse roster in terms of the type of fighters. Sure we have a pretty diverse roster now in terms of franchises. I mean a truly diverse roster in terms of fighter styles. Truly incorporate exciting ideas like we are about to get with Steve. I also wasn't implying that no third party characters should be involved if that's what you thought I meant with your Snake comment.
As for the competitive community, I'm not a part of it. So maybe my opinion on that matter doesn't hold any weight. While I don't think any segment of the audience should be ignored, I also don't think the onus should be on Nintendo to base their creative decisions on a specific segment of the audience. I would like to think if a completely new entry in Smash is well made and has a wide array of fighters and styles, the competitive community would adapt and figure it out. But as I said before, others would know the temperament of that part of the gaming community better than I would.
Again, this is a easy for me to say as I'm not the one who has to make these decisions. Just speaking as someone who has been gaming for most of my 37 years, I understand change is good and often necessary for a franchise to stay fresh. Smash Ultimate is a fabulous game, don't get me wrong. But I can also see a scenario of a port that only adds new characters and stages as well as tweaks here and there to the gameplay and many fans asking "Okay, what else?" and it feeling like the same exact thing they just played on the previous console. You do have a point in that from a resources point of view, it probably doesn't make much sense to throw out the baby with the bathwater, just for the sake of doing something different if you aren't doing something truly different that's meaningful. Also to be clear, I'm not calling for Smash's core mechanics or spirit to be changed. I don't want it to become an FPS or a turn based RPG all of a sudden. I just don't think it's a forgone conclusion or should be that the series can't go beyond the Ultimate model it's in now.
@UmbreonsPapa oh yeah, I know what you meant. I started getting off topic. My bad. My point was, that's basically what every fighting game is. The sequel is of essence just a port to any fighting game. It was like that in the first few games. 64, pitiful roster. Melee, breathed life and got a bunch of characters. Brawl, took out some fan favorites but replaced them with equally good characters, and added a magnificent story mode. Smash 4 introduced a lot of new characters and stages, and expanded greatly beyond Nintendo. Ultimate was the climax and culmination of it all. So now it can go one of 3 distinct ways.
1. Ultimate will be supported for a while but will be the last smash game, and maybe a direct port to the next console with only a few new bells and whistles. Which frankly, I'm pretty ok with.
2. They could do what you are saying and sort of soft reboot the series If I understand what you are saying. Make more diverse and mechanically balanced characters for the sake of a few fire emblem characters being chucked off. That, I also am pretty ok with.
3. They could just keep on making games with the entire roster. This, is probably the way Nintendo wants to go, and again, I'm ok with it.
I would be happy with either of these options, just unfortunately there will be one group who will be displeased. That was my original point, they kind of backed themselves into a corner here. But, I think option 3 is the best way to go. You make a very good point, but option 3 could of essence do that too. Now that there is a clear distinction between fighters and echo fighters, there could be a wealth of options coming up. With the current roster, more focus could be done to characters currently to make them unique. I keep on using the example of link being completely changed this game, but I think that is a great example. Instead of storing them away for another game down the line, they could stick to the characters and make them unique, maybe even Steve unique in the future. I don't think this will be instantaneous though, this will be long term. But maybe In the future, Daisy, dark Samus, and Lucina will be great and unique characters in their own right. They definitely have the source material to do so. In fact, we've already seen this in this game. Every single DLC character, even Byleth whether you like it or not, have been incredibly unique in their own right. And the newcomers to this game in general, par the echo fighters, have been unique. Incineroar, Simon, K. Rool, Isabelle, Ridley, Inkling, even Chrom and Ken have all been fantastically unique characters. Also the most balanced I think as well. I do think Steve was an odd case, I think that level of difference in moveset will be rare even with what you are proposing. cause that took ages to develop. And Steve will most likely be nerfed a few times before he's balanced.
So yes, your idea could work, and yes, my idea could work, but I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. I'll buy it, whatever it is. I'm confident Sakurai knows what he is doing.
Honestly, I think most creators would love to see their creation in what is basically the hall of fame of their respective media.
Considering iam8bit is selling the game that would be more then sufficient showing that buyers want the game. And being a Switch can go potable they should take a que from there.
Literally just play Rivals of Aether. It's a great Smash-like game that's different enough to stand on its own, it's on Switch, and yes, Ori is officially in it as a guest fighter. Ori is super fun to play as.
@GilbertXI I don't think they have any other choice outside downscaling the roster. Sakurai himself said this would be the only time he would get to amass this large of a roster in any Smash game, so the logical next step is probably going to be a soft-reboot kinda like Samurai Shodown 2019 or MK9 that brings the focus of the roster back to major Nintendo reps and the most iconic third party characters.
@SwitchForce Iam8bit is selling the game but it's still Microsoft's character, so they ultimately have the final say on whether or not they'd allow the character to get in. Considering we already have two Microsoft reps I doubt Sakurai asked for more after already negotiating with them and Mojang for Steve.
Twitter-begging? Well no, then.
@TheFrenchiestFry Yeah. I think we're only getting an additional Microsoft rep if a Bethesda character is happening - would've been planned before the buyout
Master Chief makes far more sense
@COVIDberry
Ha ha ha got 'em.
But he's in Rivals of Aether and id much rather play Rivals of Aether than Smash Ultimate 😳
That would be interesting but there are others I'd want ahead of him. As a Mii costume or spirit is sort of likely
Please, Hollow Knight... Please, Hollow Knight... Please, Hollow Knight... 🥺
I am pretty sure there is a 3rd Microsoft Character, and Ori is not the one. Probaby will get a Mii Costume though.
@TheFrenchiestFry oh really? I completely missed that. A shame, I'll see how this goes. They got my money either way, beating the crap out of Nintendo characters is my passion.
Fighters have already been chosen. I'm betting Shantae is one since we haven't seen an assist trophy or mii outfit for her yet and she has a decent history of games with Nintendo. She'd have a unique moveset too.
Whoops, got way off topic there lol. Um Ori, yeah dunno?
I still think Nintendo should add more 1st party characters...
Chibi-Robo, Elma (Xenoblade Chronicles X), Saki Amamiya (Sin and Punishment), 4WD (Stunt Race FX), Kyle Hyde (Hotel Dusk), Ashley Robbins (Another Code/Trace Memory), Ricky Winterborn (Wave Race/1080°), Jumpin' Jim Rivers (Excitebike 64), Zelda characters like Midna, Impa, Skull Kid, Tingle, Mario characters like Pauline, Toad, Kamek, Waluigi, Kirby characters like Bandana Waddle Dee, Donkey Kong characters like Dixie Kong, Starfox characters like Peppy and Krystal, Animal Crossing characters like K.K. Slider and Tom Nook, EarthBound characters like Spiderbot Porky. Just no more Pokémon or Fire Emblem characters if possible (Ultimate already got new ones for both series and plenty fighters allround).
And if they add more 3rd parties then they should be from historical and iconic series like Bubble Bobble, Wonder Boy, Contra, Maniac Mansion, DOOM, Mortal Kombat, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Harvest Moon, etc. (Yeah I know Tetris, Goemon and Bomberman are deconfirmed).
Arn't all the fighers already picked? not gonna happen.
