Arguably one of the best announcements during Nintendo's Indie World Showcase was Subnautica and the sequel Subnautica: Below Zero for Switch.
While there was no mention of a physical release for either version during the broadcast, over on the official Nintendo website there's a box art up for the first game. Here's a look:
At the moment, there's no mention of this physical release elsewhere - not even on the official Subnautica blog, so we'll let you know if any other information surfaces. Both Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero will launch on the Switch early next year.
Will you be adding either - or both - of these games to your Switch library? Drop a comment below.

Even though getting digital games is easier, there’s nothing like popping one of ‘em bad boys outta the switch and placing another.
wait, so is below zero coming out of early access then? cant imagine nintendo allowing an unfinished game on their platform.
Love this game in VR
Assuming performance is at least ok, I'll be double-dipping on both of these. Playing this on the go is a dream come true.
I can’t comment on the quality of the game itself, but woof, that artwork reminds me of bad Wii shovelware.....
@companyoflosers
Risk of Rain 2 exists.
It's be hard to know that though considering the lack of coverage it gets.
@companyoflosers no, below zero isn't done yet.
this is surprising, i shoved countless hours into these on PC.
Although I question how much it'll struggle to hold 30 frames...i know areas on my PC go from 120+ frames to slightly below 60 at times.
I was most excited for the Subnautica announcement and if coming with a physical release even more awesome. I hope the physical is a collection of both games but imagine they are too big to fit on a cart.
@Brady1138 That surely is not gonna win any design awards yeah.
Endless Ocean on the Wii is a good game.
When I see this footage, reminds of that.
If they run even half decently I’ll end up with both.
It’s nothing like Endless Ocean at all. I had it on PS4. You have to explore and craft items to survive. Definitely not a “relax free” free roam like Endless Ocean one bit. Not a bad thing but very different. @SPL64
@CTmatic Even though technically the game is very different in genre, it definitely has some aspects which remind me of Endless Ocean. I invested over 50 hours in both games and can say that the exploration and wonder aspect is very similar between the two.
Maybe it's just the fact that there's no other big exploration underwater games where you find treasure and discover different underwater species but I stand by my opinion. Also there are clunky ground control and mild island exploring in both as well as some supernatural elements.
Endless Ocean 3 definitely needs to happen. Excellent series and it's a shame Nintendo doesn't want to do anything with it.
@Coach_A
Seriously. The game's Switch release went from "eh" to "brilliant" in a couple of updates and it's been one of my favorite games to play on the console for the past 6-7 months or so.
I was waiting for those games. I'll pick them on Switch.
Physical? Yes please
Yeah it's looking like a good replacement for endless ocean. Nintendo and Arika should get together and work on a 3rd game. They should also port fighting ex layer to switch.
Looking forward to subnautica though. Will probably get it digitally once it goes on sale.
id get it on physical
Subnautica is a really good game. Watched a few let's plays on it and loved it. Happy it's coming to the Switch.
It is also absolutely terrifying and I will never play it in a million years.
@Brady1138 I had heard so many good things about Subnautica and was also surprised how cheap the cover looks. I hope they come up with something new for the physical release.
@companyoflosers It's coming out next year, in an unspecified date, possibly mid 2021, by then, it should be out of early access, and, I mean, they let Fortnite in, which is an early access game, so yeah
I vote for Endless Ocean 3. Tetris 99 developer, put some Enya music in it too.
It's no Endless Ocean... but a step in the right direction.
Was a bit disappointed with the graphics to be honest.
@CTmatic @SPL64 Theres non survival, and creative modes tho, for a more chill experience.
Looks like a gorgeous game. Maybe I'll pick this one up!
Wow, Nintendo Life has AMAZING puns. Like this game is coming Out Of The Blue! Nintendo Life, How do you make Great Puns, everyday?
It honestly doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would on the switch. As long as the frames don’t dip so far that I can’t play, I’m happy with this!
Markiplier has played this game enough for the entire world so I am going to pass lol.
Amazing addition to the Switch! So glad this game is coming.
@Brady1138 I have it on PC its actually very good
That’s true I forgot about that.
I remember when I stopped playing this on PS4 a long time ago saying to myself I wish it wasn’t alien fish/sharks and was real life saltwater fish and sharks so bad. The alien look wasn’t necessarily bad but I’d prefer a great white sneaking up on me more and full of awesome clown fish, yellow tangs, etc. @PhilKenSebben
I love Subnautica. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! I've put close to sixty hours in on the PS4 version.
With that being said, it had issues on the PS4; and unless Saber Interactive is porting (since that studio just wills good ports into existence), I doubt it will run well on my favorite console...
Speaking of this game, can you confirm if Panic Button is working on the Switch version (as well as Torchlight III)? They would make an excellent work for sure.
I’m skeptical that this will run acceptably on the switch. I had some trouble with a GTX 1080
I have heard good things about this.
I also wouldn't mind another Endless Ocean interation.
@Wolfgabe Oh yeah I’ve heard nothing but good stuff about the game. I’m just saying they might need to get better artwork to sell the game on its quality!
2 days ago I lost my switch along with several physical games for 24 hours. It was just misplaced, but it made me decide that from now on its digital copies only for me. I'm too much of an absent minded professor.
Got this on Epic Games for free. I should download it and see if it's worth buying on the Switch.
@RPGamer Unravel 2 is physical tho
@RPGamer I’m in Romania, just now I found out that EA didn’t bother releasing a retail version in the States. Though you can import one for cheap on Amazon I think
