I'm surprised we never got a physical release of super smash bros ultimate with the DLC on the cart (super smash bros ultimate, ultimate edition?). As for the selects line, makes no sense for Nintendo to do that if the next console is backwards compatible with switch cartridges. They can keep the older games selling at full price, and justify those higher prices if the new console can run the games at an increased frame rate or resolution etc.
An essential purchase, along with the other cave ports by Live Wire! If one is being delisted, surely the others will follow suit?
I'm still hoping for more switch ports of the Xbox 360 exclusive cave releases, but after quite a long wait I don't have much hope left. I really want to try Espgaluda 1 and Mushi Futari in particular....
@Jhena They have some weird policy where you can use PayPal if the item is coming out within 28 days of ordering, but if it is longer, has to be credit/debit card
Glad it isn't just me who found ToTK painfully long and boring... BoTW was amazing but I wish they had just released ToTK content as DLC. Paper Mario the Origami King also felt like an absolute chore to play because of the combat system, luckily I gave up after 10 hours rather than persevere to the end.
On the positive side, practically every arcade-style shmup is the ideal length for me with limited gaming time! 20-30 mins packed with non-stop action and then done. Since I got into them a few years ago I've had a lot less patience with games which have too much filler! My starting point was Danmaku Unlimited 3 - highly recommended
I'm enjoying it so far, but I've died only a handful of times and I've done the first 4 worlds, so I think the difficulty is way too low. I know I could add some difficulty myself by choosing those badges which make things harder, but that feels artificial - I would rather the levels themselves offered some platforming challenge. It is a fantastic looking, smooth playing, exciting game with loads of great ideas, but it falls short of being a masterpiece for me. Maybe I'll change my mind by the end if the last world is a bit tougher!
p.s. some of my favourite things in the game are straight up ripped off from Rayman Origins/Legends - specifically the musical/rhythm based challenges and levels. I wish there was a Rayman sequel to go with the mario and sonic games released this week!
I'll join the chorus of people disagreeing with this article! With the long lifespan of the switch and the number of digital purchases I have, if the switch 2 isn't backwards compatible, there will be no incentive for me to buy it until much later down the line (probably when they release an OLED switch 2!). Xbox have shown the right way to do backwards compatibility in my opinion, and Nintendo needs to start doing the same thing
All looked good to me, will be interesting to see the surprises in store. Hard to tell from the footage if this will be an all time classic or just another 8/10 solid mario platformer.
Another incredible release, such a good price for so much content and effort from the devs. Runs perfectly on switch and even includes offline multiplayer with bots which was always my favourite way to play rather than consistently losing online!!
By the time I got there I was totally burned out on the game, so didn't experience the joy, just rushed through. As with too many parts of TOTK, ultrahand/autobuild/spamming stamina potions is by far the easiest solution to most of the puzzles, and I felt no inclination to do anything other than the quickest thing to progress to the end of the game. BOTW with its much more limited nature, brought out my creativity a lot more than TOTK did!
'Oh Gromit' has got to be the most specific deep cut reference I've ever seen on this site...and it was absolute perfection!! If only I could pull off a good enough impression to use that in real life
@Patendo Hollow Knight is one of few indies that I actually bought at full price, so I hope they follow a similar pricing strategy with silksong. Even though it's good to get a sale, I didn't feel short changed by paying full price for the amount of content and polish in Hollow Knight
Yeah that price...no thanks! The developer has another shmup coming out shortly (Terra Flame) which is £17.59 so I think I'll go for that instead!! Spoiled for choice with shmups on the switch, and Gunvein is coming next week too which is supposed to be excellent
As long as performance is similar to BoTW I have no problem, for some reason the whole cinematic look of BoTW meant that 30fps bothered me a lot less than in other games. Frame drops on the other hand are annoying, but probably not worth missing out on the game over!!
Feels like one of those remakes that just wasn't really needed - the originals still hold up really well. I wish they had released those on NSO (to build up some hype) and then released a proper new entry in the series instead. I'm really torn on this one because I want to support it (to encourage a new entry!) but I don't really have time to play it with Zelda coming soon...
Just sharing this again in case you don't see my comment, maybe you have a 3D printer or (like me) know someone else who does that could make it for you??
@KoopaTheGamer Yeah that is such a weird choice of video to share! If anything, playing the way they demonstrate wastes even more screen space than the default horizontal view. I expect it must zoom in via the settings... I'll be gutted if not
Yes! I've been hoping for this since release, it is the perfect game to enjoy in TATE mode along with my extensive collection of vertical shooters.
For OLED users, anyone with access to a 3D printer should try this design for an unofficial flip grip while we wait for a proper release (if it will ever come out!):
Not played dezatopia, but mecha ritz is absolutely crazy in an awesome way, and the difficulty is much more approachable than it looks. Definitely a good addition to any physical shmup collection. Personally I'm glad I've gone full digital for shmups, you would need deep pockets to keep up with all the limited run physical shmups/Japan exclusives!
Crimzon Clover for me (went on sale this week and is rarely discounted) - so far it definitely lives up to the hype! Also if we have time, two player Taiko no Tatsujin with newly acquired drum controllers (apologies in advance to the neighbours!!)
Scarlet/Violet are the first Pokémon games for years that I'm actively avoiding, I just can't stand the look of the technical issues/framerate and I wanted more innovation like in Arceus rather than the same game I've played over and over again already. I'm sure I'll cave in and get it eventually but not in a rush
@novatoad Sorry, I saw a correction on twitter as well, it was just a limited run release in Japan too in the end. I follow this guy who does great shmup reviews on YouTube: https://mobile.twitter.com/nshmups
You missed the next great shmup release - Mecha ritz steel rondo! I know it is a bit niche, but the steam reviews suggest that this is another great addition to the massive collection of quality shmups on switch
Top end to 2022 for shmup fans, there is this one, mecha ritz steel rondo a week later, and then drainus and akai katana are still supposedly due by the end of the year! Now I just need enough time to play them all and try to stop completely sucking at this genre!!
Just FYI, saw on twitter that a general retail physical version is being released in Japan, so the cheapest and probably quickest option is to wait and import that from Amazon JP rather than go for the limited run version.
As others have mentioned, Raging Blasters was absolutely awesome and a good example of a more 'traditional' style shmup which still has lots of excitement and challenge without being totally inaccessible. Really looking forward to this follow up, and glad there hasn't been as much delay between the Japanese and Western eshop releases this time
I actually cancelled my pre order after playing the splatfest for a couple of matches. It seems like an unnecessary sequel since the gameplay is identical to the earlier games (for a casual player anyway), and with the single player apparently not as exciting as the early trailers seemed to suggest, I'm out.
Loved the original and expected the switch version of the remake to be cancelled after the terrible reviews on PS4/Xbox One....The footage looks decent but the frame rate could do with being a bit smoother for my liking. I will be waiting for a review before getting this one, but I'm still excited for the release!
Great review of a great game! Fantastic port given the physics/demands of the game. 60fps is nice (GRID still has the crown as best non-mario kart racer on switch IMO) but the 30fps on offer here is perfectly playable. Like need for speed hot pursuit, I love that this game is simple, pure racing fun with no pointless open world or story!!
I wish that 1080p/60fps was the standard that consoles were aiming for, frame rate is so much more important to me and 1080p is definitely clear and sharp enough for me.
I've been pre-ordering pretty much every 1st party Nintendo release for the past few years (physical) - the quality is always excellent, and I've often found it is cheaper to pre-order physically than try to pick up the game shortly after release. Physical Nintendo published games also seem to really hold their value, so it feels like a win-win, get the game at release and if I ever need the cash, it is really easy to sell the game on for close to what I paid for the pre-order.
My most exciting ever pre-order was the switch itself back in 2017, I took a punt on it after the Wii U because I liked the hybrid console idea...turns out I really backed a winner that day!
Anyone wanting to join a family group to get the expansion on the cheap please message me, I have 3 slots left on mine so happy to let people join if you can send the £7.50 via PayPal!
@Damo Question for Damien - did you mod the GBA in the photo yourself or get it pre-built? It looks great!
I have the everdrive and it just seems to work flawlessly, and the build quality is rock solid. Great piece of kit, and with the prices of GBA carts going through the roof, this is the best way to replay all those old GBA games.
