Re: Soapbox: Without A Dedicated Handheld Division, Is Nintendo Less Weird?

TheFrenchiestFry

I personally don't expect the hybrid thing to be their model post-Switch considering Nintendo are a company that thrives on throwing any idea at the wall and seeing what sticks, but I am interested in what their handheld output would be like. Maybe the Switch might become its own line of systems like the DS in the future

Being "quirky" and "unique" are things that run far deeper than just their hardware. Their IPs are so diverse in scope and content that they don't even need to do something like hybrid consoles again and risk losing their Nintendo charm because the games speak for themselves. Innovation is their lifeblood, and the same reigns true for their competitors

Games where you throw your hat to possess enemies, a shooter that involves inking turf with cephalopods, or even the mature titles involving people like witches who use their hair to summon demons and beat the crap out of angels. You won't find that from any company out there like how Nintendo does it. They could throw out the Switch tomorrow and announce a conventional console that's graphically on par with Sony and Microsoft's offerings, and the games will still be as unconventional as they were yesterday

Re: Talking Point: With Sony And Microsoft In Next-Gen Limbo, E3 Is Nintendo's For The Taking

TheFrenchiestFry

I'm really interested in what Microsoft has to announce for E3 if only because most of their first party software seems at best, years off from release with maybe the exception of Hellblade.

Nintendo has it way easier this year if only because I don't expect the Xbox conference to blow my mind in terms of games they have positioned for the near future outside Halo and Forza, and Sony's not even showing up at all (which I do miss their presence to be fair)

Re: Rumour: 2K Set To Announce XCOM-Style Avengers Game At E3 2021

TheFrenchiestFry

@MsJubilee If you seriously think that I can't help but feel you've been out of touch for years and you've only missed out because of that

Immortal Hulk, the Chip Zdarsky Daredevil run, the Jonathan Hickman X-Men run and the new Fantastic Four stuff are all superb (especially Immortal Hulk), as was what I've read of Nick Spencer's Amazing Spider-Man run and I've only heard great things about Spider's Shadow

Re: Rumour: 2K Set To Announce XCOM-Style Avengers Game At E3 2021

TheFrenchiestFry

@Varkster I don't know what alternate Earth within the multiverse you came from but Marvel literally giving us movie/TV content in addition to new comics virtually every week for the entire year thanks to how COVID delayed everything is definitely not them being in an awful state on those fronts

The only reason we've gone a two years without a movie release is the same reason for a lot of other movie franchises or just the industry in general

Re: Nier Replicant Datamine Hints At Switch Plans

TheFrenchiestFry

@BloodNinja They're probably still stuck in that mindset that the least powerful console will always win if it has good games

I personally don't like that THAT was the message they extrapolated from the PS2 being the most popular of the three big consoles, because PS3 and PS4 also fly in the face of that argument given they were both, more powerful than their counterparts, AND had great software

Re: Nier Replicant Datamine Hints At Switch Plans

TheFrenchiestFry

I'm not surprised Switch development was dropped

Playing the game on PC rn it doesn't just look like a simple up-res of the original PS3 game to me. There actually seems to be some visual changes and improvements to make the game more closely align with the aesthetic of Automata, which in of itself is a pretty damn good looking game.

Maybe they can just bring the original game to Switch like they did with Ni No Kuni?

Re: Nier Replicant Datamine Hints At Switch Plans

TheFrenchiestFry

@Ambassador_Kong The GameCube was actually only less technically powerful than the original Xbox but more so than the PS2. The big bottleneck there was that they decided to opt for their weird physical formats for games again just like the N64.

If they had just gone with full size discs like everyone else was, they might've had a way better chance at more third party support. Even the support that did come was actually really solid for the time

Re: Dragon Quest XII: The Flames Of Fate Is Running On Unreal Engine 5

TheFrenchiestFry

I'm expecting at least PS5 and Switch to get this game. DQ has pretty sizable audiences on both Sony and Nintendo systems for Square Enix not to want to launch on both

Hell, considering this game might be in super early development based on how little they showed, it might even launch potentially in time for Nintendo's next console like the timing on DQXI before

Re: Sonic Origins Spin Dashes To "The Latest Platforms" Next Year

TheFrenchiestFry

I'm really excited that Sonic 1, 2 and CD seem to be based on the Christian Whitehead remakes that were mostly exclusive to mobile, and I hope S3&K gets the exact same treatment because they distinctly put an "original gameplay" disclaimer over it specifically. I have a feeling it's not just going to be a ROM Dump of the Genesis entries

Re: Rumour: Valve Is Working On A "Switch-Like" Portable Gaming PC

TheFrenchiestFry

I hope this time they don't make the mistake they previously did when marketing the Steam Machines solely to console gamers and having multiple of those things from different PC makers sold commercially

This should just be one device and it definitely sounds tempting on the premise that there are still a lot of big AAA games that either can't run on Switch that well or just haven't shown up at all, in addition to the interfacing of the Steam Controller being suited for both console and PC gaming with the types of games that necessitate mouses and keyboards

Re: Talking Point: amiibo Have Always Been Physical DLC, Skyward Sword HD Is No Different

TheFrenchiestFry

@Slowdive The difference with the e-Reader stuff and this is that in the case of the Super Mario Advance games, the e-Reader unlocked actual additional content that was seperate from the main game, like extra levels in SMA4 for example

Fast travel isn't extra content. It's a legitimate extra feature that improves the entire game. This would be like if an Elder Scrolls game locked fast travel behind paid DLC despite developing it alongside the main game and having no reason to do so

Re: Talking Point: amiibo Have Always Been Physical DLC, Skyward Sword HD Is No Different

TheFrenchiestFry

A quality of life change isn't DLC. This article completely misses the point about why people are mad

Why the hell would they lock an additional feature specific to an HD remaster of an older game behind a plastic toy?

If it was something superfluous like item drops like what Hyrule Warriors had, nobody would've been upset. Fast travel being added to Skyward Sword shouldn't be locked behind any sort of paywall. That's a legitimate improvement to the entire game, not extra content for the sake of extra content

If any other open world game or game with open ended design did something like this they'd get the same amount of flack thrown at them.

Re: Switch Hardware Sales Beat Xbox Series X|S And PS5 Combined, Unsurprisingly

TheFrenchiestFry

It's going to stay like this until the stock situation for both consoles get better and especially when more exclusive software starts to come out since at the moment PS5 really only has Demon's Souls and Returnal with Ratchet & Clank coming in a few weeks, while Xbox has basically nothing.

Switch outselling both consoles when it's been on the market and readily available for about 4 years is really not surprising

Re: Feature: Castlevania Season 4 Review - An Epic Ending To Netflix's Hugely Satisfying Series

TheFrenchiestFry

@Mach_Rider Yeah but the difference there is that Mask of the Phantasm is for all intended purposes, a movie meant to be enjoyed by all ages. It's still an extension of the animated series from '93 with a larger budget, and is thus targeted to the same audience that watches the show

Batman TAS is a show that knows how to be mature while also accessible, but Castlevania isn't by design meant to be enjoyed by anyone under a certain age. Even the games have gone into full on M-rated territory at times with grotesque imagery, explicit referencing of religious and sexual themes and accentuated usage of gore. Batman couldn't do that because it was a show meant for families and general audiences, so it basically stretched how mature it could go and did that very well without crossing boundaries, but there were still restrictions, especially given they eventually built a universe of interconnected shows with it and the Superman series that came out shortly after, which was comparatively lighter in tone

Re: Feature: Castlevania Season 4 Review - An Epic Ending To Netflix's Hugely Satisfying Series

TheFrenchiestFry

Hearing Death talk about smothering Sypha to Trevor while constantly dropping f-bombs was weirdly kind of in character for him in my opinion

Like he basically gets no breaks when it comes to being Dracula's right hand man so obviously there comes a point where after doing the same song and dance to people who oppose him or his resurrection, he's obviously going to get kind of fed up with the whole job at a point

I actually kind of like the take on Death they did here. He wasn't spouting Shakespearean slang all the time like he does in the games but I hope we see more of him. They're probably starting from square one again with a new Belmont and his respective supporting cast. Maybe Simon? I'd actually like to see what they do with Leon since they had several easter eggs referencing him in S2

Re: Hitman 3 - Cloud Version Now Includes 60FPS Performance Mode On Switch

TheFrenchiestFry

@Low_ink Cloud versions are usually the last resort

I doubt they didn't at least try to get the game running natively or entertain the idea before going a different route. Similar things happened with games like Final Fantasy XV and Resi VII where developers openly discussed their efforts to get their games running on the hardware directly, but they couldn't even after sacrificing more than what should've been required, so they came to compromises

Re: Rumour: The Voice Of Metal Gear Solid's Snake Hints That A Second Remake Is On The Way

TheFrenchiestFry

@MortalKombat2007 Demon's Souls is not an apt comparison whatsoever

That's a complete from the ground up remake designed specifically to take advantage of new gen hardware much like Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 was, or in the case of MGS, what Twin Snakes was for GameCube.

Porting or remastering MGS4 would take a lot of effort given that unlike other PS3 exclusives or games on PS3 it took specific advantage of the PS3's hardware. It's still probably one of the most demanding games on the console and there's a reason it shipped on a dual-layered Blu-ray when it came out

Another hurdle that people likely forget to consider when it comes to re-releasing the game is that there's an obscene amount of product placement for stuff like Apple products all over the game that would likely involve an extensive and likely expensive negotiation with that company in the event they release the game again. There's literally an in game mechanic involving playing BGM during missions on Snake's personal iPod

Re: Rumour: The Voice Of Metal Gear Solid's Snake Hints That A Second Remake Is On The Way

TheFrenchiestFry

@HamatoYoshi Guns of the Patriots is damn near impossible

That game is basically designed from the ground up specifically for PS3. A remaster or port to another console would be extremely difficult considering how it was basically made to take advantage of how unique the PS3 architecture was, which is why it never got ported to 360 and has also never been re-released

It's already probably one of the most demanding games to run through emulation on PC via RPCS3

Re: Konami Has Trademarked 'Castlevania' And 'Metal Gear Rising' In Japan

TheFrenchiestFry

@ChromaticDracula If there was a trademark related to the movie it wouldn't come from Konami. Sony Pictures are producing that film on their own terms and Konami is only there by association of the IP. Sony will retain all rights to the film or future films they make with it

I have faith it'll be good considering Jordan Vogt-Roberts has a pretty stellar track record and the interviews he's conducted tells me he really understands the core of what makes Metal Gear such a cool franchise

Re: Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness Is Coming To Netflix This July

TheFrenchiestFry

@CheapCheepBeach I don't know why people expected Switch or even Xbox announcements on a livestream that was hosted specifically on PlayStation's YouTube channel and only promoted on their social media outside the official RE accounts

Also Switch probably still isn't powerful enough to handle the multiplatform RE Engine. I'm pretty sure Rise and G&G are running on a bespoke version of RE Engine specifically made for Switch hardware instead of the one powering the RE games and DMC5

Re: Konami Is Bringing GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon To Switch In 2022

TheFrenchiestFry

@Rika_Yoshitake The extent of their """game output"""" this entire time has been PES, some Yu Gi Oh card games, Castlevania gacha crap on mobile, pachinkos and the occassional console release that looks and plays like it was programmed on a Sunday afternoon in a Starbucks

This is literally their first actual game with a budget since...Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain
