Re: Rumour: Persona 4 Arena Ultimax To Be Remastered For "Modern Platforms"

TheFrenchiestFry

@GameOtaku Honestly the "SMT isn't exclusive to Nintendo argument" really doesn't hold up anymore

Sony literally got nothing after Nocturne in terms of main entries. SMT Strange Journey, SMT IV, IV Apocalypse and V have all skipped Sony consoles and V in particular is actually being published by Nintendo in Europe which means they probably collaborated with Atlus on worldwide distribution and are a large factor in the game getting a simultaneous release which has never happened for any of Atlus' other games

At this point if Persona 6 is still only a PlayStation game, then I think the ship has sailed on Nintendo getting anything mainline related, and no amount of port-begging is probably gonna change that. Persona is essentially a glorified exclusive franchise in the same way No More Heroes is to Nintendo or even Final Fantasy was to Sony back in the day. It will always be on other platforms; the Q games are literally Nintendo-exclusives featuring the P3-5 casts, but until and unless the Switch lives out its entire cycle without a Persona port, Persona's practically exclusive to PlayStation without Atlus having to admit it

Re: Soapbox: Space Jam 2 Is A Video Game Cash-In That Doesn't Quite Get It Right

TheFrenchiestFry

Do I understand why people view this movie as a cynical cash grab that exists for no other reason than to flex how many IPs and characters Warner Bros. has access to and how many they haven't done anything with for years? Yes

Did I also stand up and clap in my home entertainment center when the f*cking DCAU Justice League all showed up for a cameo? YES.

That whole scene where Al. G Rhythm got the "audience" together to watch the big basketball game was literally my brain in a few frames of film

Re: Takashi Iizuka Admits The Sonic 2022 Reveal Was Probably A Bit Too Early

TheFrenchiestFry

Sonic games have definitely turned into the "wait for reviews" kind of ordeal for me. Forces was a massive disappointment and because of it I kind of fell out with the franchise excluding Mania. Me playing Odyssey like immediately after that holiday did not help its case either

Also if you're acknowledging you showed the game too early, then why show it this early? Your trailer was literally just Sonic running in a forest and that was supposed to get people excited?

Re: Takashi Iizuka Admits The Sonic 2022 Reveal Was Probably A Bit Too Early

TheFrenchiestFry

@SeantheDon29 That's a MASSIVE overexaggeration

SEGA may not do everything right but they've definitely proven they can more than survive without Sonic thanks to stuff like Yakuza, Judgement, Total War and the Atlus/Vanillaware IPs. If anything it's probably Sonic himself that's the afterthought these days at the company. It feels like he's only being kept alive because he's the mascot character

It'll only be a matter of time before he's replaced by Jack Frost

Re: Dragon Quest XII Could Shape The Next "10 To 20 Years" Of The Series

TheFrenchiestFry

@Dirty0814 "not as popular as you may think it was"

You mean selling 5 million copies within 4 months and being the fastest selling PS4-exclusive of all time in addition to literally carrying Square for the next fiscal year because of how badly Avengers did didn't make the game "popular"

We can argue about what actual fan reception was but it's inarguable that the game was definitely incredibly successful and they're definitely taking note of that. It even caused a major temporary resurgence in PS4 console sales in Japan, a region where the console hasn't done nearly as well as past generations for Sony

Re: Dragon Quest XII Could Shape The Next "10 To 20 Years" Of The Series

TheFrenchiestFry

Yeah this pretty much tells me they're going to be overhauling a lot of things about the way DQ is at present

I have a feeling the success of FFVII Remake might've been used for the DQ team to evaluate how they can implement some form of real time gameplay to the existing systems because of the Tactical Mode in VII Remake being the game's stand out combat feature, as it blended the strategy of the original game's turn based battles with the flow of the new action-based combat

Either way they're probably purposely going to try and inch the series closer to being a hybrid of turn based and real time so they can keep the essence of Dragon Quest while expanding the audience for the games similar to Final Fantasy. The aforementioned "darker, more adult" story is clearly them trying to make the series more appealing to Western audiences since Final Fantasy is doing the same thing with entries like XII, parts of XIV, XV and even today with XVI

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting A Switch OLED Or Valve Steam Deck?

TheFrenchiestFry

I won't be getting either for now since I have a perfectly functional Switch and I'm more than contempt with continuing to game on PC since the control layout for the Steam Deck doesn't really look that comfortable as someone who primarily plays controller-enabled games on Steam

I do think the Deck looks pretty damn tempting though for those who already have a Switch and say, want to get in on games that likely won't be getting ported to it anytime soon

Re: Soapbox: Can We Just Announce All Platforms At The Same Time Already?

TheFrenchiestFry

@NEStalgia Actually Catherine was developed by P-Studio alumni so those people were directly hands on with that game. Same with some Persona spinoffs like the two Q games on 3DS which involved people like Soejima, Kazuhisa Wada and Hashino

In terms of the prospect of exclusivity you also have to kind of ask that same question about Persona 3 and 4 as well, particularly 3 since it's still only available on PlayStation 2, PSP and PS Vita and has never been re-released on any other console since

Re: Soapbox: Can We Just Announce All Platforms At The Same Time Already?

TheFrenchiestFry

@SalvorHardin Atlus doesn't need to be concerned with making money if P5 is already their best selling game in history. Being concerned about making money was what got them to a comfortable position now. They've escaped bankruptcy twice between the late 2000's and when they were acquired by SEGA

Crazy how people talk about how Atlus should be concerned about making money and yet most of their games on Switch don't do that well because y'all aren't willing to support them because "iTs nOt mUH pErSoNa 5". It's this crowd of people who are probably the one roadblock stopping SMT V from actually doing as well as it deserves

Re: Soapbox: Can We Just Announce All Platforms At The Same Time Already?

TheFrenchiestFry

@UltimateOtaku91 There are multiple factors as to why P5 on Switch is such a demanded port

  • Salty Nintendo fans wanting Joker's Smash inclusion to be "validated" whatever the hell that means
  • Some people were only made aware of Persona through Smash but don't have a platform that the games can be played on
  • Atlus' tendency to release portable versions of their main entries after the initial console releases like the PSP remakes of 1/2, Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden on Vita

I don't agree with the people on Twitter doing crap like #BreakFreePersona or whatever or constantly bickering under SMT V stuff about Persona on Switch (even people on this website), but there are legitimate factors outside the selfish ones for why such a port has a strong following whether it be from Atlus fans or people who can't play the game because they don't have a PS4

Or you know instead of preordering an OLED Switch they can save up for a PS5 but who knows

Re: Soapbox: Can We Just Announce All Platforms At The Same Time Already?

TheFrenchiestFry

If FFVII and IX were any indication the Pixel Remasters will definitely come to consoles but it'll take like a year

The PS1 games were also ported to PC and mobile first, then PS4 to drum up hype for FFVII Remake, and then finally Switch and Xbox

As for other games there are a lot of AAAs that are still somewhat ill-suited for the hardware despite the miracle ports that have come along. If we're calling ports like DOOM Eternal and Witcher 3 "miracle ports" that says a lot about how woefully underpowered for the big name stuff the platform really is. In fact FFXV is actually a great example of this considering Hajime Tabata has been quoted as saying his team tried multiple times to get the main FFXV game to run on Switch, even going as far as converting the game to UE4 instead of the Luminous Engine, and it just couldn't handle it which is why Pocket Edition happened instead

Another thing to consider is that there probably aren't a lot of people that use Switch as their sole console platform, and usually have another platform to go alongside it like a PS4 or a PC, so the market for big AAA stuff on Switch, while there is probably vastly undermined due to the ratio of sacrifice needed to get the game running on the platform against how well it would actually do with people who only own Switches and haven't gotten the game on anything else. That's why stuff like Control and Guardians of the Galaxy being cloud games is relatively low risk for these companies compared to native ports as well, especially if the technical hurdles are too much
