Following the Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary Live Stream earlier this week, there's been a little bit more information revealed about the big reveal, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate.
The official Dragon Quest Twitter account has confirmed the game is powered by Unreal Engine 5. The previous entry, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age was obviously running on UE4. And in case you're wondering - yes, Unreal Engine 5 does in fact support the Nintendo Switch.
Apart from this, series creator Yuji Horii shared a statement on the Square Enix career page - revealing the story in the new entry has already been completed. Takeshi Uchikawa will also be returning as the director of the new title. Uchikawa also worked on XI as the director.
Dragon Quest XII has been described as a much "darker" and adult-themed take on the long-running series. There'll also be some decision-making in the game that will shape how the game unfolds, and the command battle system will undergo some changes.
Platforms and a release date for Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate haven't been confirmed yet, so keep an eye out for this information in the future. Are you looking forward to the next chapter? Think we'll see it on a Nintendo platform any time soon? Leave your thoughts down below.

Would this be the first game confirmed for Switch to run in Unreal Engine 5?
@EliteXeos To the best of my knowledge, yes.
I don't know when we'll see it, but I know I can't wait. I only ever played the demo of DQXI S, but I loved it!
After seeing what UE5 can do on PS5 and XSX, I bet this game's gonna look great.
I feel like they definitely would not want to miss out on releasing this on Switch given the units sold and popularity and Japan, but then again, I wonder how it is going to look and run.
I guess I am the only one who dislikes most Unreal Engine ports on Switch.
But I guess if they do this one, the do it properly.
@LunarLunatone @EliteXeos I think Epic said that Fortnight is gonna be moved over to UE5 not long after the UE5/PS5 presentation, so that could probably be considered the first confirmed UE5 game on Switch.
@EliteXeos @LunarLunatone There's no platforms confirmed. It's probably not coming to switch.
I'm expecting at least PS5 and Switch to get this game. DQ has pretty sizable audiences on both Sony and Nintendo systems for Square Enix not to want to launch on both
Hell, considering this game might be in super early development based on how little they showed, it might even launch potentially in time for Nintendo's next console like the timing on DQXI before
Dragon Quest 12: the Flame of Fate is gonna look amazing on Switch sucessor.
@EliteXeos i think Switch do not suport UE 5, only U4, Dragon Quest 12: the Flame of Fate is gonna release problaby on Switch sucessor.
@Giancarlothomaz Unreal Engine 5 does support Switch, Epic confirmed it last year. Reasons for that is cause they are planning to upgrade Fortnite to that engine soon and want all nine platforms to be compatible with it.

@Giancarlothomaz Epic has confirmed that UE5 supports the Switch.

Every single main Dragon Quest game, with the exceptions of VII and VIII because of the whole N64DD thing, was originally released on a Nintendo system. I'm sure XII will be too
I am expecting switch or some Nintendo console to have this game. Maybe exclusive for a while
@VoidofLight you said no platforms confirmed. That does not mean that it is not coming to switch
@anoyonmus I say it's probably not coming because the game is probably far off.
Switch will be compatible with UE5 but we will see what games can take advantage of it. Prob games build for Switch from the scratch like MHRise on RE engine.
I don't think Fortnite will move to UE5 on Switch but hope i'm wrong.
@VoidofLight it most likely to either switch or switch 2.
@DockEllisD by then Switch Pro will be out. Which should run this game better.
@dimi Epic will lose a large install base if they failed to utilize Unreal Engine 5 for Fortnite on Switch. The reason why they announce UE5 for Switch and the other platforms was to keep that large install base active. Of course we don't know yet when Fortnite will go UE5.
@Yanina oh, i dislike em too, they feel and look muddy, plastic and saturated. Especially on the small screen.
We’re finally in a generation of games where Sony and Microsoft no longer try to be edgy by making their games mostly brown, and now Square Enix wants to enter that space? Can’t help but be a bit nervous about that and any move away from menu-driven turn-based combat. If it’s too actiony like Builders.....I’m done.
@Keithustus They won't move away from turn based in mainline, if anything they're just doing a new form of turn based, be it ATB or another system. The core fans in Japan would not be happy.
Probably won't mean much for the Switch version. Most of the new features in UE5 are aimed at the next-gen platforms, which the Switch won't be able to take advantage of at all.
@Dezzy reason i believe its going to be release on switch 2.
@falconlord5 Yeah, I think people have to remember that it's still Yuji Horii in charge, Akira Toriyama's art design, and the same director from XI bringing it all together. "Dark" is relative here. We've seen dark themes in DQ before. So it sounds like they're just going to lean into it, that's all. Dark by DQ standards, not Last of Us dark.
Personally I'm very excited about the idea of this. Likewise, the theme of choices really piques my curiosity. Until now, a superficial marriage option in V was about the most important choice you had to make in a DQ game's story. I love the idea that they're planning a choice-based story that can potentially have multiple endings depending on your decisions. XI kind of played with this idea very lightly by giving you the post-game content that lets you change things, but it sounds like with XII, you'll be influencing the story from the start. I like that a lot.
Also, it makes me think that vocations are coming back? Looking forward to that.
I doubt that Square Enix will not want to put one of Japan’s most popular series on Japan’s most popular platform. Even if this is earmarked for the PS5, I could imagine something like a demake for the Switch. After all, DQXI launched simultaneously on PS4 and 3DS - the power disparity doesn’t rule anything out.
As much as I love the switchy Switch, I’m happy that it’s not used as the base console for development. I want to see a beautiful next gen Dragon Quest. (:
That means it will play floaty like XI.
I think this is the SE game for Christmas 2022, and it will be released on Switch, PC and PS5. The Switch version will be slighly different, same as what they did with DQXI with the PS4 and 3DS versions.
@the_beaver
I think you are probably right.
@Koudai1979
What's on UE5?
If it's that Resident Evil Village then no. UE5 looks gross. Or maybe that's Capcom sucking yet again.
They'll change the combat system but commands are staying.
I hope they can come up with an interesting and much more cinematic round-based battles.
I prefer the classic round-based over the FFX-ish turn-based system they used in DQX — makes me use my brain more by planning the entire party's moves and watching the results play out are much more thrilling.
personally I can't see DQ 12 being on Switch which would be a mistake Dragon Quest has proven it sells better on Nintendo platforms than Playstation
Honest question here. Why do people always seem to make a big deal if a game is being made with unreal engine? Isn't that like the most common one used by developers when making AAA games, why do they always announce it like its a game changer?
@sword_9mm RE VIllage was made using Capcom’s RE Engine, the same engine they used to make MH Rise.
@sword_9mm There's no game running on UE5 yet. RE Village uses the RE engine. A custom version of RE engine runs MH Rise and Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection
on Switch
@Moonlessky for this title they've announced it because UE5 is not even officially out yet and promises a lot of cool tech so it's kind of a big deal that the game is made on that game.
@sword_9mm I was talking about Fortnight. Last year, during the UE5 reveal, Epic said that Fortnight would be moved to UE5.
As for Resident Evil Village, that runs on Capcom's own RE Engine. The same engine that powers Monster Hunter Rise.
@UndoControl I do wonder, they've used the next-gen console because this is the best way ti showcase it to the average consumer but it could be really incredible if they could showcase the nanite and lumen technology running on switch !
@dimi Or, it might be playable on the new upgraded Switch. Which does not make sense because you know a Switch 2 will be out soon after the upgraded Switch. That business model always upsets me.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi i see, but can Switch run UE 5? UE5 seen too advanced for Switch to handle, only next gen consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X seen able to run this engine.
Oh wow. Is this the first game confirmed to be developed using UE5?
Good to hear the story is already ironed out!
But for those who want turn-based combat, it was not a good sound when the livestream said things like the turn-based menu combat would be optional. That sounds so much like how Square Enix kept emphasizing FF7R technically containing optional "menu-based" combat...
I have a bad feeling about this until we see actual gameplay someday.
Dragon Quest games are released on the best-selling console in Japan at the moment of development:
DQ1, 2 3 and 4:Famicom
DQ 5 and 6: Super Famicom
DQ 7: Playstation
DQ8: Playstation 2
DQ 9: Nintendo DS
DQ 10: Wii
DQ 11: PS4 and 3DS
They make ports but once the base game has made a profit. or in the case of 10 to keep the servers costs.
So I guess DQ12 will be on Switch seeing how it is the best selling console in japan and is outselling the competition.
@the_beaver I think this is coming 2023 at the EARLIEST
Forspoken is already confirmed for 2022 and FFXVI is said to be coming out after it (at least on PS5) so considering those games are fully playable and have had gameplay shown for them, DQXII is probably not nearly as far in production.
This is definitely 2023 or possibly even 2024
I heard UE5 engine is going to be good for the low end of devices. So UE5 games could run and look better then UE4 on switch.
@Giancarlothomaz If it was too advanced to run on the Switch, Epic Games wouldn't announce its compatibility with the Switch.
@EliteXeos Yes. And good thing that Unreal Engine 5 is compatible with Switch
@Giancarlothomaz I see, but can Switch run UE 5? UE5 seen too advanced for Switch to handle, only next gen consoles like PS5 and Xbox Series X seen able to run this engine.
That's a question only Epic could answer for you and by the look of things I believe they already did.
Really enjoyed XI, looking forward to seeing how XII can match the previous release 👌
A "darker" Dragon Quest?
Running on Unreal Engine?
I guess I'll have to see it before I judge it.
Day 1. DQ11 is my favourite JRPG hands down.
@EliteXeos The article literally said that platforms are still unknown.
@Sparrowhawk
Considering the Switch fully supports UE5, it’s practically confirmed to be on Switch/Switch Pro.
Not to mention DQXI sold far better on Switch than it did on PS4.
@EliteXeos
So by your logic.. The Switch supports the RE engine. So RE Village is practically confirmed for Switch!!!! Oh boy!
Or have you entertained the possibility of the next DQ going more ambitious and pushing next gen while supporting the PS4 as the lowest common denominator. So instead of spouting baseless assumptions as facts.. let’s wait and see instead perhaps?
@VoidofLight DQ11 hit the 3DS in Japan. I give it a 90% chance it hits Switch. The 10% is if Nintendo has moved on to a new hit console by the time this game releases - not likely.
@Xellen
Fortnite is the first.
