Re: Random: Sakurai Celebrates Bethesda's 35th Anniversary With A Timely Meme

@Bizzyb Look Microsoft's presence in Smash is nothing to scoff at but there's no way in hell they'd just magically lend over any of their BIG exclusive franchises like Halo or Gears

If Chief gets in it'll probably be a Mii costume, but especially as far as FPS game reps go DOOM is particularly more significant and has close ties to Nintendo much like the other Microsoft-owned characters in Smash

Re: Dante, Shantae And More Join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate As Mii Fighter Costumes

TheFrenchiestFry

@BulbasaurusRex Well when I talk about action specifically in regards to Dante I'm referring to hack n' slash. I did specify character action games in my point, of which DMC is probably the biggest name of that genre

Action RPGs are basically lumped in with any other RPGs in my mind, especially when it comes to picks like a Tales or Ys rep. Hell both Lloyd and Dragonborn are technically kind of like that

Re: Dante, Shantae And More Join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate As Mii Fighter Costumes

TheFrenchiestFry

@russell-marlow Actually Master Chief is exactly a reason why I think the prospects are shifted more towards Slayer's favor

Microsoft has two reps in Smash already, but neither of them are from their big top tier franchises like Halo or Gears, but rather games that specifically have some sort of history with other platforms or are made with studios that they're letting operate with some form of autonomy. Bethesda is supposedly still going to remain a seperate business altogether even though it's owned by Microsoft, and that also includes self-publishing their games like they always have. It'd be far easier for them to get ahold of a character like DOOM Slayer by comparison considering Bethesda is technically still its own entity, like Banjo and Steve DOOM is a franchise with a storied history on Nintendo consoles, and he also is a culturally significant figure in the gaming space with his contributions to a whole genre of games. The licensing or the willingness from Microsoft I feel would be way looser around those characters compared to their golden geese like Master Chief or Marcus Fenix

@Vortexeo The thing is Ninja Gaiden was a thing long before the modern games, often also being associated with the NES titles and Ys is still kind of a niche series even if VIII made it a bit more popular than before, and is an action RPG. Not a hack n' slash game, which is why it doesn't occupy the same audience as DMC or those other examples.

In terms of mainstream examples, you literally can't think of action game franchises without the big three: Devil May Cry, God of War and Bayonetta.

Re: Dante, Shantae And More Join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate As Mii Fighter Costumes

TheFrenchiestFry

@Vortexeo No disrespect to your gaming tastes but Dante is literally the poster child of character action games. He and Bayonetta were both created by the same person and his games were a big deal during the PS2 era much like franchises such as Tekken or Persona

Games like Bayonetta or God of War, or even the Werehog in Sonic Unleashed owe part of their existence and template to DMC

Re: Dante, Shantae And More Join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate As Mii Fighter Costumes

TheFrenchiestFry

They have been dancing around DOOM for so long between the Bethesda interviews and Fallout and Elder Scrolls getting Mii representation

Come on. Make it happen. Vault Boy and Dragonborn as Miis. Slayer as an actual Bethesda character

Does it sound like a pie in the sky dream? Yes. Do I still believe? YES. DOOM out of the three is like the only one of those franchises with actual Nintendo history on top of that

Re: Feature: Monster Hunter Rise Director Talks RE Engine On Switch

TheFrenchiestFry

RE Engine being able to be put on Switch like this is something I never expected to see given how RE7 was brought over to the console. I'm honestly still stunned how it actually looks kind of decent for the platform it's on

I'm not holding my breath for stuff like the REmakes or DMC5 to be brought over any time soon but I hope this and Ghosts n' Goblins aren't the end of them using RE Engine for Switch projects

Re: Mini Review: DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One - Rip, Tear, Repeat

TheFrenchiestFry

@RiasGremory Yeah and remember how piss poor Doom's performance at launch was

Eternal only runs as well as it does because there are so many sacrifices to visuals and asset quality whereas Doom 2016 basically tried to prioritize resolution at the expense of the performance ranging from semi-consistent to PowerPoint 2007, especially at higher difficulties where the amount of enemies populating an area of each map significantly increases

If Eternal and Wolfenstein 2 didn't downgrade the visuals and resolution to the extent they did in comparison to Doom they'd be looked at way less favorably in the performance department, never mind the fact that Eternal literally runs on a new engine and both it and Wolf 2 are significantly more reliant on geometric detail and effects like depth of field compared to Doom 2016

Re: Mini Review: DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One - Rip, Tear, Repeat

TheFrenchiestFry

@Azuris It runs a lot better than any other id Tech port but that also came at the expense of sacrificing a lot of the visual quirks that were present in both DOOM and Wolf 2 on Switch like getting rid of the depth-of-field effects or per object motion blur as well as selectively choosing which assets should be presented at higher quality than others to make sure the hardware didn't buckle under the weight of having to render so much detail compared to the other platforms. They had to sacrifice way more here compared to either of their previous ports and any further compression just to get it on a physical cartridge would probably run the risk of losing the game's visual identity, which is what put me off picking up Wolfenstein 2 on Switch previously

Re: Mini Review: DOOM Eternal: The Ancient Gods - Part One - Rip, Tear, Repeat

TheFrenchiestFry

@RiasGremory If they had to cancel the physical version in the first place it's probably because the game just became way too taxing for the hardware to be put on a cartridge, especially considering they already delayed the game indefinitely beforehand on Switch while the other platforms only got like a 4 month delay from their original release date

Eternal's like one of the best looking games of the entire last generation. It probably isn't as easy as putting it on a cartridge and calling it a day considering Wolfenstein II and the first DOOM already had a limit on how much they could fit and it probably wasn't going to be worth it long term for how much money the port would realistically make coming out so late after the other platforms

Re: Best Sonic Games Of All Time

TheFrenchiestFry

@NintendoArchive Sonic 3 and S&K are essentially two halves of the same game, but Sonic CD is nowhere near contention amongst the fandom for best classic Sonic game due to its super schizophrenic level design during the latter portion of the game, despite its production value holding up

I personally think it's good but doesn't hold a candle to Sonic 2 and 3&K imo

Re: Best Sonic Games Of All Time

TheFrenchiestFry

Honestly surprised Generations 3DS ranks so high here. I thought it was the laziest of the handheld equivalents to console Sonic games. It pales in comparison to the DS version of Colors imo

Re: Talking Point: Our Favourites From E3 2021

TheFrenchiestFry

My absolute top games from the show were both from the Nintendo Direct, being Metroid Dread and Shin Megami Tensei V, but in terms of everything shown I'm also really psyched for Starfield, Elden Ring, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, WarioWare and Advance Wars
