Sonic's big anniversary may be this year, but SEGA is planning to continue its push in 2022 with a new game and a fresh animated series on Netflix. The show will be called Sonic Prime and is promised as a "high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in [Sonic's] gloved hands".
Those eager for a look at what the series will bring appear to have been given a bit of a sneak peak through some concept art. It was shared - and since removed after it got spotted by fans online - by visual development / environmental artist Patrick Horan, who gave the following information and artwork before taking the page down.
These are concept pieces I painted for the Netflix Series Sonic Prime. I was responsible for cleaning up the layouts and color. Character posing and design provided.

Of course, concept images perhaps give a sneak peak but don't definitively provide final details around the show; until it airs we won't know how many of these concepts made the final cut.
Let us know what you think, and whether you're looking forward to Sonic Prime next year.

Multiverse. Yuch... Ah well, all the best to them anyways.
The fact that this is a Netflix, rather than Amazon, series really confuses me.
Interesting reference to the Robotnik design from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog there. They repurposed his body shape as a round spotlight ornament?
And oh geez, actually going full on with the kitsune thing with Tails.
Major SatAM vibes... Not really interested, but hopefully fans of gritty Sonic will like it. The Baby Eggman is funny, as is the AoStH Robotnik reference.
I’m just glad to see artists outside of Japan coloring Sonic’s arms the correct way again.
Of course, this is all concept art, so it may still change later…
Why does Tails have 9 tails?
@Justaguest Why is Sonic blue?
@BloodNinja What I am saying is that Tails has always had two tails.
If I didn’t know the Sonic series prior to these images, I’d say he looks like he’s being verbally abusive to a seriously depressed Eggman in that one still. Then, in the next still he’s doing an L on his forehead. Makes Sonic look like he’s a jerk. Good thing people already know who Sonic is. Lol.
If that's a rough idea of what it'll look like, I think it looks pretty good
And why would Amazon have any say or connection to the show if it's a Netflix production?
@Justaguest
The other concept art with multiple different versions of Robotnik and a jungle version of Amy Rose should make it clear.
This is some sort of multiverse scenario, this version of Tails that Sonic has met has nine tails, like the Kitsune yokai that his design is loosely inspired by.
Why are their shoes so...Busy?
@Justaguest I was just messing, I honestly have no idea. Probably to show off some new aspect of animation, I bet.
Sonic would never give an L lol maybe a bad joke or pun but never an L
I dig this artstyle a lot. Hope the show at least somewhat resembles the concept images
@UmbreonsPapa they were just making a joke. Sonic “Prime”, Amazon “Prime”.
I- I'm sorry. But did Sonic just TAKE THE L?!??
@Pacmanrace No?
Lovely pieces! Does Amy turn into Sticks?
But I do agree a bit: The multiverse thing has been done to death in tv, movies and games (hello Crash bandicoot, hello Ratchet and Clank).
@iuli
Lol, or "originals" that are just bought from different tv-channels/streaming services.
@jcboyer515
From the makers of Donkey Kong Country Returns and Metroid Prime.... Retro Studio takes Sonic Prime to the next dimension
😂
On topic, I like the concept art. I would like a Sonic game set in Mobius. I don't know if the comics are canon but I enjoyed some of the characters like Sally the Deer and the Bionic bunny whose name escapes me.
Honestly not a huge Sonic fan but this looks amazing, the colour and level of polish looks interesting.
If you guys were a sonic fan you would have heard of these leaks, The new game Might go in the same manner.
Tails has nine tails... Amy's out in the wild... EGGMANS FAMILY???
ok I know it's probably just that multiverse thing but WHY DO YOU NEED TO SHOW EGGMANS FAMILY
Eh... after seeing this... no thanks, this looks as awful as the She-Ra Reboot.
Anyone else noticed in the second concept art, the globe is formed like Robotnik's body from AOSTH?
@Justaguest i guess their doubling down on his being based on kitsunes which in myth, tend to get more tails the older, wiser and more powerful they get which it tending to be like 1 tail per century with the 9th one being after 1 millennia.
now that i think about it, i don't think we've ever seen a version of tails that has even got past 50 and most versions of him tend to be 4-11 so i guess its possible this could be a 1000 year old version of tails.
@TheFrenchiestFry I wish it was a game TBH. Hopefully thats what this new game is.
@CheekyZelda I see. Just was curious
Wait, is the Tails from an alternate universe a 9-Tailed Fox?! That is so cool!
@Ulanda Don't judge a cartoon solely on its concept art. "Spectacular Spider-man" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" (2012) have never looked that impressive in still images, yet they both turned out to be among the best (and arguably the best) cartoon series versions of their respective franchises.
@BulbasaurusRex That's your opinion, not mine. I learned to ignore "looks" and listen for context, which helped a lot for me. Tmnt 2012 was awful because Shredder was a joke and Donnie had a crush with April, which was maybe the dumbest thing I've saw in this series.
Marvel is a different case, because the unnecessary amount of political correctness and character redesigning is painful enough. It is no secret why Marvel is suffering qhen it comes to superhero comics.
The amount of bad quality nowadays in all kind of media compare to the later days, is frightening high and people are too stuborn to understand why their projects failing or fans reject them in the first place. Just because it makes money on the first view, doesn't mean, the company makes any money, because they have to pay for production as well, which many people love to forget.
@Ulanda Shredder in TMNT 1987 was somewhat of a joke, but he's properly threatening in the 2012 version. It took quite a while before they could handle him even 4 on 1. (He's also human and not an Utrom like in the 2003 version.)
I'll give you Donnie's crush as being creepy, but that's only one minor downside in what was otherwise an awesome rendition of the Turtles.
I wonder if the green shell is a mario reference
@BulbasaurusRex I disagree with 80s Shredder, since every villain were like that back in the days. But 2012 felt like a cosplayer who improvised badly. It was just bad.
@Ulanda The character of Shredder in general looks like a cosplayer, nothing new there, and the 2012 version was perfectly capable of planning and improvising while being the most bada** version that the character has ever been outside of the comics.
@BulbasaurusRex look, you can try to nice tslk the 2016 version as much as you want, but my opion stays.
