Last year, as you might recall, Nintendo was the victim of a massive "Gigaleak" - revealing the company's past secrets, source code, unused assets, characters that had never been seen before, and much more.
Now, more than a year later, it seems new findings are still being made and today we present you with an image of some early Wii Remote designs. This comes courtesy of the Twitter account Forest of Illusion, which is focused exclusively on Nintendo preservation.
As you can see, all of the designs are considerably different from the final version of the product. A few even look more like a television remote in the top half. Oh, and they're also coloured lime green - a colour Nintendo showcased prior to the system's release.
Although it can't be seen in the above image, it's also been noted by Nintendo Enthusiast how the concept designs may have been smaller than the final version of the product. Though this is only based on comparisons of the D-Pad.

man that is the most Xbox 360 Competing color i've ever seen
The bottom buttons should have been X and Y rather than 1 and 2
Removed - unconstructive
Tag yourself, I’m Wii Remote Concept Design 5
@kingbk According to your opinion it was awful, but to a lot of others it was their childhood, and a pretty good console all things considered. It has a pretty extensive library of games, and a unique control scheme for it's time. Without it, the Switch wouldn't even exist the way that it is now.
The concept Wii remotes remind of that one fast food toy Wii remote that shot discs out the top of it when pulling down on it's D-Pad but I can't find pictures of it.
Wait I found it! Not sure how to embed images here...

The last two quite literally take the "Remote" part of the Wii Remote name seriously
With the click wheel around the A button that totally looks straight up like a TV remote
@VoidofLight My thoughts on the Wii is it was a gem of a console surrounded in horse manure. If you Wade through the sheer crap on it you'll find many great games that have yet to be topped. (Xeno blade, Pandora's Tower, etc).
Also shame the early concept wasn't of black Wii motes. Could of been 'The leaks are back, back in black!', ah well maybe next leak.
@kingbk Lol, Nintendo should be glad you are not part of their company. That awful console was an enormous success.
It was a great console, innovatove and really fun. Many many awesome games.
@XenoShaun yes. There were mounds of garbage software, you really had to pay attention to find the good stuff. The Wii had some excellent games, but there were some duds too.
huh, teru-sama, the same name as the dummy items in Pokemon G/S/C
also, the leak was so massive, who knows how many things will surface in the future...
@Zequio And you have a right to that opinion, as does @VoidofLight.
In my mind, Nintendo has had three great consoles in their history: the NES, the SNES and the Switch.
They have always dominated handhelds.
Nintendo 64 was overrated.
The GameCube was a disappointment.
And the Wii was complete garbage, regardless of how well it sold.
This is just my opinion.
Skyward Sword is the only game I care to play from Wii
Okay okay, and Kirby Epic Yarn
The last two designs look like streaming box TV remotes. Nintendo was ahead of their time.
@NinChocolate don't disrespect Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort like that.
@kingbk Trolling or do you just have bad taste?
@JaneBear Not trolling at all. I loved the NES and SNES. I think the Switch is fantastic. The Wii was a gimmick laden underpowered console loaded with shovelware overly reliant on motion controls. It handcuffed good games like Mario Galaxy and Skyward Sword, which you can now play on the Switch without forced motion controls. Yes, I get that it sold boatloads and lots of Nintendo fans like the console, but I don't like it at all.
@kingbk I think it's probably my favourite Nintendo home console!
I might be biased because I once won four million pounds playing Wii Tennis.
To read that Pokemon Pinball DS was in the works at one point and was cancelled.
The Wii did have some amazing games. In fact I've been rebuying lots in the last week. I cant wait to replay mercury meltdown revolution, excite truck and more.
Sadly there was so much shovelwear and too many awful rip offs of better games that didn't work. Brunswick Pro Bowling comes to mind.
Sadly even Nintendo made awful games for it. I only rented Wii Music but that would have been the biggest waste of money ever, and not being more powerful and hd absolutely limited what could be released, eg the version of Dead Rising it got, no Assassins Creed games, no GTA or Red Dead Redemption.
But what we did get were some of the best games ever made like mario galaxies, the definitive RE4 and proof that shooters could work better than on a controller with Metroid Prime 3.
It sure was a great time to be a gamer.
@kingbk []The Wii was a gimmick laden underpowered console loaded with shovelware []
I find this statement kind of ironic when the same could be said about the Switch - which you say you love.
The Wii Remote will stand the test of time as an icon of consumer electronics from the early 21st century. Beautiful to look at, hold, and play with. I love it and appreciate the opportunity to see these early designs.
“Giga-theft” more like it, this data wasn’t leaked, it was stolen.
I am more than happy, that the "motion" gaming, that the Wii, PS3 Move and Xbox Kinect represented is gone. The "new" Virtual Reality is just a new-gen fashion fad that will also pass quickly.
I have to say, there were some solid games on the Wii. Sadly, the video output was bad even for the 2000s. Nintendo could at least built in an HDMI output. They tried to correct this with the Wii U, but it was too late.
The A's and C's on top indicate what button was at the bottom of the wiimote. I'm glad they made the right choice with the final design. Like the shiny green color. The Luigi wiimote for WiiU comes closest.
Thank God they went with the white.
@kingbk sure its your opinion, the thing is you dont provide any reason for why you think the wii was garbage?
It had great games (surely surrounded by many, many bad games).
You should add a Wii controller image for comparison on the same page
@Zequio forced motion controls, gimmicky, shovelware, underpowered (no HD).
@kingbk kind of unfair reasons:
shovelware had the NES and SnES too (and take a look the current eshop).
The switch is underpowered too compared to contemporary consoles...
Forced motion controls... Well the switch have many games with that same gimmic.
Games as Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime, Mario Kart, etc, etc where great.
@NinChocolate no Mario Galaxy? Twilight Princess? Mario Kart?
@kingbk Well, no offense, but you cite shovelware as one of your criticisms of the Wii, but the thing is that the way you put it, you make it sound like the Wii ONLY had shovelware, and that, of course, is complete and utter nonsense.
Over the years, I've managed to collect well over a hundred games that are all highly enjoyable and some of them even still impressive to look at to this day, regardless of them not being in HD. And that even holds up on my new 55" 4K OLED screen, so that already ought to say something...
As for the rest of your opinion: I usually say that everyone has a right to their own opinion, as long as it does have merit and is constructive in its reasoning and clearly explained, instead of just taking short cuts with lame one-liners that a lot of haters back in the day also used.
So, in that regard, what you've said so far, already became practically invalid and/or to be taken with a truckload of salt, especially when you called the N64 overrated and the GameCube a disappointment.
If your habit is to always be VERY selective in your choice of games, regardless of whatever platform you play them on, then there might just be a valid point hidden in there somewhere, but otherwise, I have a strong feeling that you kind of lacked a healthy sense of realism there.
I honestly don't know what you expected of those consoles, but it sounds more like you were drinking too much of the Sony KoolAid back then.
I mean, the N64 alone had a number of stellar games, such as one of the best F-Zero games, Wave Race, 1080 Snowboarding, and on top of that also some truly revolutionary first party titles, that could NEVER have been made to run on any other console of that generation, and more importantly: it also saw the ultimate rise of Rare Studios, with plenty of brilliantly entertaining titles, some even surpassing Nintendo's own efforts.
As for the GameCube, where do I even begin? The best Metroid games EVER, Eternal Darkness, new iterations of F-Zero, Wave Race and 1080 Snowboarding, two great Zelda games, plenty of wonderful second and third party stuff, some of which exclusive, and the best version of Resident Evil 4, until the Wii version came out to beat it with a superior control scheme.
And I could go on an on, about both consoles.
And sure, from a sales perspective, both of them didn't do too well, but regardless of those numbers, they still delivered plenty of entertainment to those that took the time to truly look at and enjoy what was on offer, instead of just putting blinders on and moving towards the other platform with the rest of the herd, simply because of the fact that it had more games.
Look, whatever, if you love the Wii, great. I don't honestly care. I just was saying I don't like it. I love the Switch and I know there are a lot of people who don't like it because of joy con drift/no themes/no folders/no friend chat/whatever other reason. No skin off my nose. Video games are video games. Play what you like and I will do the same.
All consoles have a lot of shovelware. I just think it was more obvious in the Wii days because there was so much aimed at 'casual' gamers and it made it stand out.
But Nintendo didn't help themselves. Wii Party was no guitar hero or even donkey konga and the Wii had the worst single pokemon game of any console but it was a landmark console and the fact that people who had no interest in games such as my Nan could enjoy Wii Sports Bowling is a big deal, although I think the DS helped too.
@Zequio I bought and played all of those in their time, just not ones I feel to return to
@Zequio I had TP for GameCube so I never thought of it as Wii. I did enjoy it on GC. Likely won’t go pay it again like I am Skyward Sword right now
