In May this year, Sega held a special live stream broadcast celebrating 30 years of the blue blur. The final announcement of the show was an incredibly brief teaser of a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog action game coming out in 2022.
As you might recall, it showed a brief clip of Sonic running through a forest and a funny-looking logo at the end. In an interview with 4Gamer recently, as translated by Nintendo Enthusiast, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka admits the whole thing might have been "a bit premature" but with Sonic celebrating his 30th, Sega felt like it had to do at least something in honor of the special anniversary:
“We haven’t announced a brand new action game for the Sonic series since Sonic Forces, and that caused fans to worry. While it was a bit premature, I wanted to at least take the occasion of the 30th anniversary to announce that a brand new title was in development.”
In a follow-up question, Iizuka was asked about the meaning behind the symbol at the end of the video, and if you've been trying to make sense of it through the power of deduction, you're unlikely to work it out:
“It is something symbolic that appears in the game, but the meaning is still a secret. However, I will say that it’s not something one would figure out through deduction. we’ll eventually share more details, so please wait a little longer.”

Takashi has previously described how Sonic's next outing will be an "advancement" of modern Sonic games - similar to the leap from 2D to 3D games. And if recent rumours are anything to go by, the title could apparently be an open-world game called Sonic Rangers drawing inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Although this announcement might be a bit premature, during a Sonic livestream last May, Sega's Aaron Webber mentioned how the company had changed its approach to the development of Sonic games in recent years. While reveals might still be taking place too early, Sega's plan is to take more time when releasing major Sonic entries, rather than rushing production.
Were you satisfied with the initial tease of Sonic 2022 or do you think Sega should have waited until it could show a little more? What do you think the strange symbol might be linked to? Leave a comment down below.

Where have I seen this before.... (cough cough botw 2)
SEGA needs to learn that they don't have to do anything just to celebrate an anniversary. If anything that's what caused Sonic 06 and Sonic Genesis to happen in the first place. And anyway, I feel like they're doing enough as is, just by announcing Sonic Origins and the Sonic Symphony Orchestra, and giving us Sonic Colors Ultimate to tide us over until the next adventure. I'd be much happier with them giving us older games than forcing out a new one just to meet an anniversary deadline, and thankfully, it seems like SEGA is doing just that this time, but didn't feel completely content with not at least announcing their new game. I can't say I blame them either, as I'm sure at least a few people would have complained if nothing new was announced.
I want sega to take there dang time, I don't care how long I have to wait if it means a good sonic game.
Sega and their announcements...The calliopes can be heard from here to Sewickley
At this point in time, Sega as a company has become an after thought in the gaming industry, with nothing really substantial to offer to customers, half-baked ideas that no one wanted and re-releases along with fan projects being the only things that are keeping them even remotely relevant in the market. It's a real shame, actually.
@SeantheDon29 That's a MASSIVE overexaggeration
SEGA may not do everything right but they've definitely proven they can more than survive without Sonic thanks to stuff like Yakuza, Judgement, Total War and the Atlus/Vanillaware IPs. If anything it's probably Sonic himself that's the afterthought these days at the company. It feels like he's only being kept alive because he's the mascot character
It'll only be a matter of time before he's replaced by Jack Frost
Sonic games have definitely turned into the "wait for reviews" kind of ordeal for me. Forces was a massive disappointment and because of it I kind of fell out with the franchise excluding Mania. Me playing Odyssey like immediately after that holiday did not help its case either
Also if you're acknowledging you showed the game too early, then why show it this early? Your trailer was literally just Sonic running in a forest and that was supposed to get people excited?
If they're stressing how early this reveal was, I wonder when we'll get some concrete news about the game. They have Colors and the rebundled old games to hold people over this year, but it'll be a bit awkward if Sega's silent for over 6 months until E3 just for one game. Hopefully they have at least one more announcement for early next year, it seems like Sonic keeps getting hit with big droughts that don't even have many remakes in between.
And then all of my excitement, gone in an instant
Take your time guys. Just knowing it exists will calm the nerves of the eager portions of the fan base, and colours will help tide us over. Just make sure you use the time to get it right.
@TheFrenchiestFry you don’t understand… certain sections of the fan base were getting anxious over the lack of news, so Seah just wanted to let them know “yes, we are working on something, don’t worry”
@Alpha008 Though it's a double edged sword, since some of them are already expecting a disaster because it was a CG teaser with no gameplay, despite that being the norm for Sonic regardless of the quality. I think Mania and the 3 Boom games are the only ones that were announced alongside gameplay.
Some of the hardcore fans and "sonictubers" are a combination of impatient and nervous/pessimistic, not entirely their fault but they jump the gun too much imo.
But overall, yeah it would've been way worse if they didn't show anything.
As a fan of platformers, the thought that the new Sonic game might be an open world game inspired by Breath of the Wild worries me.
@TheFrenchiestFry And people still think they throw all of their franchises under the bus in favour of Sonic. But they've been giving Sonic budget games for a whole decade now, while other franchises like Yakuza, Persona, the western/PC studios have been getting bigger and bigger. It's not like the 2000s where we got 2-3 Sonic titles a year either, we barely get 1 a year these days.
They would have been better off just saying a new game is planned for next year and talking briefly about how it’ll play rather than showing us a 8 seconds of Sonic running through the most generic forest in CGI. Regardless, I’m still interested in the new project and hope for the best. Didn’t play Forces as I’ve Sonic games tend to always be hit or miss with me. Maybe I’ll give it a shot if it goes dirt cheap on Steam or something.
SMT V and Bayonetta 3 had this exact same problem. SEGA/Atlus needs to learn to stop showing things off too early.
@JR150 I don't think Bayonetta was SEGA's call. It was probably more of a Nintendo/Platinum thing considering Nintendo is publishing the game even if SEGA owns the IP. Same with SMT V and Persona 5 given Atlus just announces things on their own terms
@TheFrenchiestFry
Fair enough. But people should learn from each other's missteps. Announcing games way too early leads to concern and annoyance from the consumers who are now going to be bored waiting for it. Overwatch 2 is probably the best example.
I'd rather just be surprised when the game is finally ready.
@1ofUs Not sure I'd agree with that comparison at all. At least in BOTW 2's initial teaser reveal, there was some substance to dissect and get hyped by. This Sonic teaser was literally just him running through a field and nothing more. I think I'd say the far better comparison would be the Metroid Prime 4 or Bayonetta 3 reveal.
@JR150 I think Cyberpunk was probably an even better example.
Gee, where have I seen this before? Where a game was announced too early and generated hype only to crash and burn when it eventually did release? I think it was called Cyberpunk or something...
@TheFrenchiestFry I would rather he not, cause as much as I love Jack Frost, Sonic was literally born (as in released) as a franchise the year I was born. I would rather he stay, thanks.
Just give us Sonic Colors Ultimate this year, then Sonic Origins Collection next year, then a Sonic Generations remastered the year after that, then Sonic Mania 2 or a Sonic the Hedgehog 5 after that, then a Sonic Adventure Collection after that, and if it's ready give us this new Sonic for Sonic's 35th anniversary. C'mon Sega don't let the OLED down.
@TheAwesomeBowser Duke Nukem Forever and Final Fantasy XV (formerly called Final Fantasy Versus XIII as part of that Fabula crystal myth thing that Square made up as to connect it to FFXIII and Type-0 but not really) also fall into that category as well. Heck both of these at one time were believe to had been vaporware. Heck even when both did get released they still feel like vaporware cause both won't be coming to the OLED.
@TheFrenchiestFry
Unless if SEGA straight up becomes an RPG company first and foremost, I don't see it happening. Most people even people who haven't played video games know who Sonic is, can the same really be said about Jack Frost?
I'm happy Sega announced the 2022 Sonic game. It's nice to know a new entry is coming. And even it it gets delayed, Sonic Origins and Sonic Colors Ultimate will keep me more than satisfied until it comes out. Now all we need is a Sonic Unleashed and Shadow the Hedgehog remaster🙏
Colours Ultimate and Origins would've been more than enough for the anniversary celebration game announcements. The ability to play old games on modern platforms is just as important as new games.
Why? Look at SMGTV. Announced when switch was first revealed. I HAVE PATIENCE. it was worth it. I want to know about a game that it is announced. Even if it is 5 years away. Because I know it's coming.metroid prime 4 is coming. Bayonetta 3 is coming. I know about them and I would rather know that a great game is being worked on than not. What if the Namco version of meroid prime 4 would have been shown the second it was announced with a trailer. Then nintendo scraps it . Starts over and gives the series back to retro. So many people would whine and cry. But we want that version now. No thanks. I can wait. There are a ton of other great switch games while I wait. When atlas did not show hardly any thing for SMGTV in 2017. I did not mind. Now look how amazing the game looks. So I like knowing about future games . Even if it is 5 years from now. A great game takes time to make. And I would rather know that it is coming than not.
I'm kind of excited about an open world Sonic. I replayed Sonic Adventure recently and it's crazy how much free movement around the levels Sonic had in comparison to the newer games like Forces or even the Colours remake assuming it plays just like the Wii one. It makes the newer games feel so stiff, basic and like a step backwards from something made two decades ago!
Note, I'm just referring to Sonic levels in Adventure. Some of the other characters gameplay hasn't agreed so well. Knuckles level in the casino was painful! The other characters levels are better and more polished in SA2.
Stopped getting excited for Sonic 3D games ages ago,was really hyped for Sonic lost world, then realized it was pretty awful, so glad when super Mario odyssey came out, on a whole different level to the Sonic games.
A bit early to show us the promise of a half decent Sonic game?!
I'd say it's about 10 years too late.
Apologise all you want, but the reality is there's no hiding from the years of shambolic franchise management.
Can they just sell Sonic to someone competent already?
Why turn back from the teaser and say it you revealed it "a tad bit too early"? Now everyone here are just going to assume it's going to be a repeat in history
@TheFrenchiestFry I appreciate you thinking that but it's not gonna happen.
@nocdaes I'll rather want Sonic to die then getting sold to another company like Nintendo.
I like this, poor guy feeling bad about announcing a game a year early while Nintendo announces games before they even have an alpha they're committed to releasing.
Thy should have just released in June the upcoming Sonic Origins collection.Dont really get why a port of old games(3 out of 4 of them having been already remastered) couldn't have been ready for that time frame,even with the pandemic.Instead,somehow,its not even releasing this year.
Huh. Somebody thinks they "decoded the code" at the end of the teaser.
https://youtu.be/djV5aTDXueA
It seems like a weird coincidence. I won't believe anything till Sega spills the beans.
@tntswitchfan68 Yeah but the difference is modern Atlus doesn't have remotely close to a spotty track record with their games compared to modern Sonic Team lol
Every big game they've released over the last decade hasn't really disappointed at all
Right. Cause releasing a collection of the master system games or something couldn't have been done instead?
I'm honestly relieved! Based on the leaks the game was kind of needing some extra year or two to actually be fun... I will always choose to wait over a mediocre game!
@TheFrenchiestFry you got a good point.
@1ofUs
Eh, better choice would have been something like Bayonetta 3.
At least we got a good teaser with BOTW 2, and who knows how much the covid lockdowns affected development time on that game.
That Sonic teaser was like announcing a new Mario Bros. game and only showing Mario's hat as he jumped into a question block before fading to black.
Hopefully it will finally be good Sonic game though!
@KayFiOS In all honesty this may be a good time to push a Sonic Mania sequel. Wouldn't be nearly as hard or time consuming to make and personally I'd love more of the same because of just how good Mania was.
@Randomname19 Right. I'm used to games being delayed over and over again/taking ages to actually come out but it looks like a bare bones compilation...no reason why it would need that much time in development.
@RetroOutcast The only reason why I don't think we're getting a Sonic Mania 2 is because I think Taxman is developing Sonic Origins... Although I fully admit that could be wishful thinking.
I just want it to be good.
It's impossible to get hyped anymore for me, but it's also not too hopeless for me to move on.
So I'll just hope. See what happens.
