It's been an exciting week for Persona fans - with Atlus announcing it's got seven project reveals planned between September and next Autumn to celebrate the series' 25th anniversary. Let's not forgot about the Japanese video game company's original RPG though, Shin Megami Tensei.
Atlus has just released a new trailer showcasing the story in the new game Shin Megami Tensei V. It gives us a bit more information about what to expect and another look at the battle gameplay. The music is great, too.
If that's still not enough, be sure to check out the showcase of the game from Nintendo Treehouse Live. We've also got a gallery of screenshots you can check out in our previous post. Enjoy!
Will you be picking up this game when it arrives on the Nintendo Switch this November? Leave a comment down below.

"Decide what is worth saving."
psh, i do that every time my switch runs out of storage, he isn't special
I’m all in! So stoked for this and Metroid 🤘🏽
So hype for this. This game looks genuinely beautiful which means Atlus really took their time on it. I could care less about having Persona on Switch because I'm glad to have something NEW from Atlus. This looks so awesome. The dude with the glasses and the green scarf is adorable.
I hope this does well so badly. Every single person who’s even slightly moaned about Persona not being on Switch better buy this.
I will sit in silence and soak in the awesomeness.
Was undecided. I’m enjoying smt 3 at the moment. But after this trailer I’m sold it looks quite good
@nessisonett
Switch has propelled franchises like Xenoblade (XC2 sold 2 million, XCDE sold 1.5 million) and Fire Emblem (Three Houses sold 3 million in under a year and won two awards at TGA which is usually biased against Japanese titles) into higher popularity, so I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens for SMT--especially since its spin-off series (Persona) has gotten super popular. I can forsee a lot of people buying a Switch just for this game.
I hoped it's dubbed
Looks insanely good. Been waiting for this game for four years now, but it looks like it'll be worth the wait.
This game is gorgeous. Seriously, this is like Luigi mansion 3/astral chain levels of what is possible on the switch. As a hard-core smt fanatic I could not be happier knowing that this game will be in my hands in four months!
Given how long this series has sort of remained obscure in the portable ghetto, it's amazing to see Atlus coming back with what looks to be their most ambitious home console game to date. This is seriously gorgeous stuff.
@nessisonett Most of the people moaning about Persona 5 don't even know what SMT is and probably only know about Joker because he's in Smash, lol.
Conservatively, I'm guessing this'll land somewhere between 900,000 - 1.5 million units sold lifetime. SMT IV did 600,000+, and you're not going to convince me that this much higher-profile sequel that's being pushed like nuts by Nintendo isn't going to benefit from the bigger Switch audience.
@luckiernut Other than a few late-era 3DS games, Atlus dubs virtually everything they localize. Besides, I believe the E3 trailer already confirmed English vocals.
The plot sounds incredibly similar to Nocturne in terms of set up but has some Strange Journey vibes with the integration of an organization overseeing efforts to fight the demons as well
I love that they're going a bit more open ended by having you traverse the world in an open ended fashion. It looks like instead of dungeons you just roam around Tokyo fighting and allying with demons, which sounds like a great progression for the series and something that's really well suited to handheld play in particular
i can finally fuse King Frost in HD!
Now than Altlus, how about Mad Gasser in HD?
@nessisonett The people moaning about Persona 5 on Switch and stuff are mostly bitter that Smash has been getting a better lineup of PlayStation All Stars than PlayStation All Stars instead of third party characters that are "familiar to the Nintendo crowd" as if nobody knows who Solid Snake and goddamn Cloud Strife are
They will continue to bicker. Only people who realize Atlus should be supported regardless of series will be picking this one up and I hope those people increase in numbers thanks to the exposure games like Persona, Catherine and Nocturne HD got
@Aozz101x Persona 5: silently sits in the corner
I honestly hope this'll be a good one to start with, and that the speculation about it being tied to Nocturne isn't true.
@VoidofLight Setup wise it kinda looks like Nocturne but leaning more towards Law. You got an apocalypse set in Tokyo, a teen getting thrown into the mix and fusing with something, and a girl watching the apocalypse happen. I hope that's where the similarities end and this isn't just Law Nocturne
@VoidofLight SMT IV featured a lot of call-backs to the SNES games. In the same way, I'm pretty sure this is just a spiritual successor to Nocturne.
SMT IV and IV: Apocalypse are probably the two most accessible entries in the series, so I wouldn't worry too much about V not being a good place to start.
@Kirbo100 Yeah, I'm hoping that it won't be where one ending is pushed onto you, with the other being harder to get. I heard that they did that in IV, and it sounds annoying since you have to follow a specific guide to get the Chaos ending I believe.
@Ralizah Ah, that's good to hear. Can't wait for the 12th of November!
@VoidofLight Neutral ending in IV was the hard one, because there's a limited range of alignment points you had to land between. While the way it was implemented was a little annoying, they tried to make your alignment reflective of your choices throughout the game, which I really liked.
@Ralizah Ah, I see. I just remember a friend playing it a while back, so I thought it was the Chaos ending, but it's been a while. Neutral makes more sense, as it's harder to remain neutral in every situation.
@JR150 Genuinely hope so, the Switch has been magic for niche genres
Looks spectacular, so glad this is being given pride of place on Switch. Speaking for myself, this is one I'll play with Japanese audio and English subs. It would just be more immersive given the setting of the story.
Story already sounds more interesting than IVs. And the animations are just fantastic
This is how you sacrifice demons for better animation and quality, not the sorry excuse Game freak gives for pokemon
This looks and sounds allot like Nocturne witch was one of my favorite rpgs. The remaster kinda diminishes it and definitely shows its age but its still good im excited for a more modern take on that.
My most anticipated game of the year. I really can't wait to dive in.
@nessisonett Why? You don't have to like both game series. I love the "standard" SMT games, but I have never been able to finish a Persona game, since I find them boring and tedious.
Everything they've shown so far just shows how much of a masterpiece this game will be. Very tempted to get Nocturne on the MX eshop right now. At approx. $20 its a really good deal. Atlus right now is what Square Enix used to be.
It looks soooo good! This and Metroid Dread will come to Switch day one FOR SURE!
@path4smash Well, actually we can't complain about current SE. They're trying hard to deliver great games. Neo: TWEWY looks fantastic as well, I can't wait!
@the_beaver yeah might be pretty harsh on that comment but I am mostly disappointed on how the Final Fantasy games have turned out after 12. I wanted to like Bravely Default but it doesn't have quite the same charm as Chrono Trigger and FF. Gonna give NEO some love in the future too once I clear my backlog but for now Atlus got me covered in the RPG department.
Atlus has always delivered excellent SMTs , I have no doubt that SMT V might even surpass persona 5 royal in terms of sheer quality. And since persona's 25th birthday is this year (with 7 new projects coming in), this may yet be the best year (money wise) for ATLUS.
As our protagonist slowly makes his way towards those people kneeling and worshipping some sort of deity. Gives me the feeling something epic is about to unfold, maybe a boss battle or something well whatever that is will be lit. 4months looks like 4yrs now in my eyes 😅
Hmm… I wonder how a pokemon (spinoff) game would be if Atlus made it with a big budget. Like mystery dungeon but AAA.
Anyway gonna cop this game, but I dont see a special edition anywhere in Europe? (Netherlands)
almost 5 years waiting and Shin Megami Tensei 5 is looking well worth the wait looks soo good
@BrintaPap I mean, Pokemon is basically a kid friendly version of SMT...
Already convinced & pre-ordered. Interesting trailer though!
This is the one we've been waiting for.
I'm gonna be honest. This game looks better than Persona 5. I don't mean that as a jab- I'm a massive Persona fan and always will be- its a phenomenal series. What I'm trying to say is- I never actually expected this game to outshine Persona. And yet, it's doing exactly that.
Persona 5 Strikers was incredibly good, too. Between that, SMTIII Nocturne and the grand daddy of them all, SMTV, we're eating good over here in hybrid land.
Wow, this looks pretty good
@JaxonH
Considering that Persona 5 is actually a PS3 game from 2013, it would be a real problem if SMT V didn't look better as a Switch game 8 years ahead in 2021.
@Strumpan yeah i know but im talking like a standard mainline pokemon game but with the mechanics from SMT (or persona)
I look forward to making every bad decision <3
@BrintaPap Ah, all right. Yes, that would be kind of cool.
