As promised, details surrounding the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Switch have been shared during the Nintendo Direct E3 2018 live stream, and it's all very tasty indeed.
The game will be called Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and will amazingly feature every single character we've ever seen before in the series, whether they were a main fighter or one introduced through DLC. On top of this, Daisy and a female option for the Pokémon Trainer have been added to the series, as well as - in an unbelievable turn of events - Ridley from the Metroid series. Lots of new stages are also set to appear from games such as Splatoon 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Apparently, the way in which you unlock characters has also been streamlined, making it a more enjoyable experience for players, and lots of other changes and refinements have been introduced to perfect the control and final smashes of each of the characters. Eight player battles are also set to return.
The game will release on Nintendo Switch on 7th December - make sure to put that big giant 'X' on your calendars so you don't forget.
Feel free to positively burst with excitement in the comments below.

No Gunslinger from 1-2-Switch? I'm out.
Young Link is back, not that fake cartoon wannabe.
Zelda's redesign is so cute!
Snake? SNAKE?? SNAAAAAAAKKKKEEEEE!!!
So there’s Aces in June, Octopath in July, Mario Party in October, Pokemon in November and Smash in December. So expect some further updates during Treehouse over what the big titles will be for August and September...
I was watching this with friends, when Daisy showed up I told them that there was one guy on this forum who would scream out of joy. @memoryman3
No word yet on a Story Mode....
That was the only thing I was looking forward to in the Smash announcement...
Daddy Sakurai singlehandedly won E3.
That was quite an info dump there. They didn't seem to leave any stone unturned, with the exception of the story mode
Needs more Ray-Man
I was afraid about a few characters getting cut in this one, but seeing no cuts made me all the more happy! And Leaf from FR/LG as Red's alt!? YES!!!!
...I am hoping Bomberman becomes a playable fighter, though. It's great to see him in the game, but I want to play as him, not summon him as an Assist Trophy...
Amazing. And they even showed Fire Emblem! I'm so happy.
A basic description of Ridley's Inclusion:
Ridley: Surprise, mothaf#@ka.
Samusosa: Oh, God.
This felt like Sakurai was like “leave me alone “ and then he tossed in the kitchen sink.
Ridley amiibo!!
@Pluto14,
Lol, I was thinking the same thing! Yes, its just a skin/clone. But I guess he/she might still be over the moon anyway!
Welp, there's my answer. I'm not buying 3DS DLC. XD
Ridley 😊
I blinked I must have missed the section on smash bros
Huge dissapoint ... Liked smash and Mario party and that Daemon game but part from that it was meh
I jumped for joy when they revealed Daisy! Super Mario Land on the original Game Boy was my first Mario game so it's great to see Daisy getting some recognition. I was hoping for Krystal and Tails as new playable characters but I know that was a pretty unrealistic idea so I'm happy with all the old characters returning + Daisy & Ridley. =)
@Bizzyb Watch Otacon hack into Palutena's Telepathic Frequency.
I DON'T CARE ABOUT DAISY OR RIDLEY BEING IN SMASH NOW

I ONLY CARE FOR BREN MCGUIRE
@Jin15 You can keep your YAY-HAS!
They really thought this deserved 30 minutes, I'm laughing
Seeing Daisy made me happy for a certain someone...
The new mechanics look to be a great new addition as well. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
Yet another Wii U port with some added content.I lost what little interest I had for this console.
It would be interesting if classic mode has each character would have a Street Fighter II style ending after they defeat Master Hand.
A bit disappointing that more new characters aren’t there (or will be kept secret) but overall I’m really happy about this game being a reality. I just want Dixie Kong and King K Rool to get the love they deserve.
Nintendo’s e3 seemed light on content. Basically it’s Mario Party, Pokémon, and Smash for this Fall. I’m not interested at all in MP or Pokémon. No firm date for Splatoon 2 DLC seemed odd and no sign of Yoshi or Metroid at all. I personally don’t care for Fire Emblem at all.
So is this a new smash.. or just the old smash with every character from previous games?
@Ryu_Niiyama “I don’t know what you guys even want from me anymore, I just want to sleep. Here’s EVERYTHING, IS THAT ENOUGH?!? ARE YOU HAPPY?!? NO?????? FINE TAKING FREAKING RIDLEY,M, I HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO GIVE!!!”
Seriously though, the poor man should be let go from this series, he’s clearly been wanting to for awhile. Game looks great though.
Every smash stage and every smash character ever, and the addition of ridley.... Secures the fact that I will be getting a switch!
@Mgene15 It's not a port.
@YoshiAngemon I must be getting old, because I have no idea what that means. XD
The gang's all here...and every Fire Emblem character.
Loves what I saw ,but suffered serious overload from the info
After that surprise half-hour I feel like I beat the game multiple times already. #ssbdirect
@StephenYap3 Shout from Bomberman Jetters would beg to differ.
I gotta admit I'm not that into Smash anymore, but when they started showing that every single fighter was returning, that was incredible. I wanted Snake to come back.
And I'd bet y'all there'll be one or two new characters that haven't been announced.
They wasted their E3 on the Rolster. They could have given us 7 minutes of Info on Smash. Instead, they took up the whole Direct. I am not a Smash hater, but come on.
@Sgt-Jack-V
He would be very welcome!
Ridley is insane, and the fact that all past characters are in is incredible.
I STILL NEED PYRA IN THE GAME THOUGH GOSH DANGIT
Disappointed that Rex & Pyra didn't make the cut. Possibly as an un-lockable character?
Zelda is my main and I'm not digging her new look. Sigh. I was hoping Lyndis would become a playable character instead of an assist trophy even though that was hope against hope.
I guess I'm intrigued. I'm kind of exhausted from many years of Smash but I guess by obligation I need to get this one too. My RL friends sure are bugging me about it enough.
Loving this. One of the hardest parts of getting into Sm4sh was feeling like we were losing the brawl exclusive characters. This feels like more of a step up, and it'll be harder to justify picking Sm4sh over it.
groan
Yes, Ice Climbers!
@ShadJV How about Shadow The Hedgehog? I know a guy named Daimando who would do some funny things with the footage, like converting the Smash video, and cutting to SFM where Shadow crashes into a cow!
@River3636 well they didn’t have anything else sadly so they filled it with that.
@Pluto14 same here, I immediatly thought about @memoryman3 celebrating.
@Randomname19 how is this a port? It’s every character from every entry, several new characters, every stage plus new stages, new items, new assist trophies, new Pokémon, noteable changes in the mechanics, and changes to almost every returning character. What would make this a new game for you???
@YoshiAngemon no Shadow, we don’t need multiple 3rd party characters for a franchise, one representative is enough.
This game deserves the ''Ultimate'' title only if it has...Subspace Emissary 2.
So, can we all agree this isn't a port?
ok, but they showed smash bros for WAAAY longer then it was really needed. What about the Yoshi game? What about Metroid Prime 4?!?
Ultimate fan service? This was a Smash direct in the guise of being a direct for other games. We have dlc and ports til smash arrives in December... it’s June.
Nintendo is dropping the ball big time with the Switch right now and this direct had echoes of Wii U in the whole “this year kind of sucked but next year... will also suck but you don’t know that yet.”
Always waiting Nintendo, always waiting.
@YoshiAngemon I don't understand...
@Mr_Pepperami They had other things. They just gave us a speed viewing of them which was alright, but they could have thrown us a bone for Metroid. What is there holiday line up again?
@Mr_Pepperami I'm not surprised. They preemptively announced stuff last year before it was ready. It's the same problem that Sony had at their conference as well. Mostly trailers for stuff that was known.
Only Microsoft had a ton of new things to announce but then again their presentation last year was pretty abysmal.
Daisy? Say no more.
Good reveal, but not amazing, IMO. I do love the streamlined Final Smashes and the look of the game. The new animations, attires, details in the stages are great. Adding the Inkling (we knew), Ridley and Daisy is cool. But in the end, I was hoping for more new characters and less irrelevant returning characters (i.e. Pichu, Olimar, etc.).
I'm happy, but not as happy as I was hoping.
Daddy Sakurai delivered i am so hyped snake!!!!! Ridley wow!!!!😁
The direct was a complete let down. 25mins on Smash?! They should have covered most of all that stuff in the treehouse or do it's own direct in a month or so.Third party announcements?metroid?Bayonetta 3? What are Retro up to? The one thing Nintendo have convinced me of is that I'll be playing my ps4 a lot more....Well done 👏
I'm sure it will be excellent, but I find it hard to get too excited about a new Smash Bros nowadays (and I find all the forced, over-the-top hype over it a little tiresome). I don't think I'll ever feel for Smash like I did during the halcyon days of Melee. The last one was fine, but it felt a little stale. If "the most bloated character roster ever!" (as if that's even a good thing...) is what they're going with here, then I think I was right not to get too excited.
I'm speechless
Super Smash Bros: DELUXE! Really, this just feels like an effort to get Smash on Switch rather than moving the series forward. The game honestly looks great but it relies 95% on what came before rather than standing on its own.
I crossed my fingers hoping for bomberman to be a playable character, and then they went and ADDED PICHU BACK AS A PLAYABLE and what’s this about bombs....???? I get my lil PICHU back yay ahaha yay!!!!!
@Aerona That was my first reaction too, despite it being such a minor thing to most people.
I always loved the ALTTP/ALBW design the most out of all of her looks.
@JpGamerGuy90 We have two more days of Treehouse. I say we wait before calling this year or next a fail
@ShadJV Come on! It's called "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate!" It DESERVES to have the ULTIMATE LIFE FORM!
@River3636 think I really was relying on Yoshi and Fire emblem for this year as I’ve never particularly been into smash(although my son is) and Pokémon. Guess I can catch up with my game backlog for the rest of the year.
Really wanted Rayman! Would have thought Ubisoft deserve it.
@Ernest_The_Crab I’m surprised that Yoshi didn’t even get mentioned as that was said to be 2018. Fire emblem also has slipped but at least they showed that. Guessing Yoshi is giving them trouble
@Randomname19 some people....
@ShadJV Its not enough for me.It needed more new stages and characters.Where are Springman and Rex?Where is New Donk City?
I’m so ve y happy to see everyone return, but Ridley looks so stupid shrunk down like that.
They spent way too much time on this during the broadcast. Most of this crap should have been left for patch notes.
N U T
@YoshiAngemon haha have you played SA2? Like all the way to the end? Because the big reveal is spoiler alert Shadow is not the ultimate life form, the Biolizard is. So by that logic the Biolizard should be in Smash (it shouldn’t).
The TRUE Smash Bros...
Only 3 real new characters, and no mention of a Story Mode, Stage Builder, Smash Run, and Smash Tour, or even mention of Classic Mode or Event Mode. I'm so very conflicted on this...
@Randomname19 well for one the earlier interview had said they were saving some surprises, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a couple more stages and characters (and the ones you listed are quite possible). But that doesn’t make it a port, it’s a compilation of EVERY Smash. It’s just as much every other entry of Smash as it is Smash 4.
Got me hyped.
@Anti-Matter you sorta should’ve expected this, they said Smash was the focus of this E3. Like when Breath of the Wild was the focus and they spent half of the Direct on that. Yoshi and Prime 4 clearly are not coming out soon (maybe next year) and if Switch is getting Animal Crossing it’s not for awhile. Smash is one of the biggest system sellers for Nintendo (especially out of the titles this year) so it was inevitable they’d sell it up, especially since people were afraid it was just a port of Smash 4. But they already told us this would be the main focus of their presentation.
This is incredible. I love everything I see so far, I just hope Sakurai will take care of himself and maybe not work on another super smash brothers game for a while...
Words cannot explain the hype I have right now. Yes, it's confirmed it is a brand new game, and its gameplay strikes to me like a mix between Melee and 4, with all the new mechanics added to it.
Nevertheless just Holy Mother of God, every character, as well as welcome surprises like Daisy and Ridley! Not only that but also the major design overhaul some characters were given, such as Ganondorf and Zelda! What's not to love?
And another thing few people have mentioned, did you not listen to that beautiful main theme song? It's so well written and pumping! Reminds me of the Melee main theme, sounding so much like the celebration of videogames and Nintendo characters.
Definitely, they nailed it, this SMASH is too much to handle. Hopefully, later on the road, they reveal a story mode because that's the only thing missing the way I see it.
Sakurai went all out with this. Can't wait for December!
I was really disappointed that Crash and Spyro weren't in Smash. I hope Nintendo adds them in an update.
@NintyNate I was hoping they would show Spyro on Switch and a release date for the new Yoshi game
@Yorumi I wasn’t expecting much else to be honest. Last E3? Mostly just Odyssey. E3 before that? Breath of the Wild. This has been the trend for awhile. Don’t set your expectations too high and you shouldn’t be disappointed. One big game a year is normal for them at this point and hoping every year for that to change is setting yourself up for disappointment. It’s why I got a PS4 a couple years ago - my favorite games are the Nintendo ones but my PS4 gives me other games to enjoy between those releases.
@ShadJV But who beat the Biolizard, and crash landed into the ocean, and was fished out by Eggman's Robots in time for Sonic Heroes? Shadow!
I honestly cannot believe some of the backlash against this game.
The fact that every veteran fighter is back should be enough to cause people who love Smash to go nuts with hype.
Hell, the last fighting game that I remember that brought back all the fighters from previous games was Marvel vs Capcom 2, which brought back everyone from X-Men Children of the Atom to Marvel vs Capcom.
But even this blows Marvel vs Capcom 2 out of the water in terms of fanservice. All the returning fighters in that game were sprite rips from their previous appearances. Iceman, for instance, was ripped from X-Men: COTA, Thanos, and Dr. Doom were ripped from Marvel Super Heroes, Juggernaut from X-Men vs Street Fighter.
My point is, all the veterans have gotten a new coat of paint and some of them have radical changes to their appearances. Sakurai and his team went the extra mile to add in that extra dash of fanservice.
And that's just the icing on the cake. We have new mechanics, a new UI that has quality of life improvements(Now you can see Robin's weapon and tome durability and Cloud's limit break), countless old stages getting a new coat of paint, etc.
On top of which, we have three newcomers already on the way, with more to no doubt come later.
I get that if you don't like Smash how seeing most of the direct focused on this game would be something of a downer. But if you're a Smash fan, how can you be unhappy with this?
This is Smash's Marvel vs Capcom 2.
@MikeW Same.. no story mode, so I'll just stick to the version with no enhancements on Wii U
@YoshiAngemon Sonic helped beat the Biolizard, who was still a prototype (the ultimate life project was shut down before it was finished). And Sonic has also survived falling from Space, it’s not that impressive in their universe.
@Anti-Matter "I felt pretty disappointed with last Nintendo Direct."
Never thought I'd see you say something bad about Ntinedo, well besides adult games on Switch. I agree with your missing list, plus I'm still waiting on Pikmin 4.
“Where’s Skull Kid?”
@Yorumi show me evidence where Nintendo “promised” we’d get more first party games every year? Nintendo isn’t suddenly going to be able to make games faster, that doesn’t change especially over a few years. Other consoles fill in the gaps with third party releases... and Switch is admittedly getting more of that than Wii U at least.
Personally, I think it’s getting more than enough support to warrant my purchase. I play every day and after only 15 months with my Switch I have nearly two dozen games and a notable backlog.
Sick of people acting like the system is doomed already, it’s already done better than Wii U. People have to bandwagon every gen like this. Yes, it wasn’t a mind blowing E3, but looking at the other presentations, the only one that seemed really good was Microsoft’s (ironically the one console I don’t even have). If you’re regretting purchasing a Switch, maybe don’t purchase consoles until it has enough content that you wouldn’t care if support dropped the next day, since you never really know if it will, there’s no promise that it will receive a certain amount of big games over its life. Nobody forced you to buy the console and nobody is entitled to new games at all on the console they purchase - in the future, don’t blindly support a console and wait until there’s enough games for it that you’re happy with it.
Unless you have money to burn in which case there’s no reason to buy just one console. Heck, even before Wii U we only got 1-2 big first party games a year, this has been normal for a long time.
If Nintendo really wants to make this the ultimate Smash Bros, they should add Detective Pikachu voiced by Danny Devito and Trico from The Last Guardian Seriously tho, how can they have Cloud in Smash without Sephiroth?
So the two new characters revealed today are Daisy and Ridley... Daisy Ridley.... Hinting at star wars characters joining the fight?
Glad to have my mains (Palutena/Robin) back. Hopefully they've gotten a fresh round of buffs to help them climb up the tier list.
And I love how Robin is just so not into this in the promo banner!
Ok, Smash broadcast went on for quite a bit. But, they also already told us that. And, assuming you're not someone is just biased against Smash for one reason or another, this was amazing. People always complain about cut characters and stages, wanting to see their old favourites to come back. Sakurai delivered! Could've very well stopped with just giving us Melee + Brawl + 4, but then still decided to change up practically all of the existing fighters and allude to some new ones. Clearly he's listening to what fans want because Ridley would have never been in otherwise. Unless it's a complaint about game modes, which I can support cuz we know nothing on that front, all the other whining sound ungrateful.
As far as the direct goes, I love that we finally got to see the new FE and a new Mario Party. Daemon x Machina had my heart racing, as a long time mech fan. Only thing I wish is that FE and DxM weren't so far away but we've got third parties to hold us over.
This is awesome! Definitely the highlight of E3 for me.
No, I don’t see the pessimism surrounding Smash. I can get people being upset over lack of other games in the Direct, but even still, they will have more focused Directs throughout the year.
What pleases me about this iteration is the culmination of the entire roster that has been building since I begged my dad to buy me the n64 version decades ago. Playing Brawl, I felt a little disappointed that I couldn’t play Pichu or young Link. Playing Wii U, I was stripped of my beloved ice climbers and Pokémon trainer. That lingering disappointment had muddled my enthusiasm for each new installment, UNTIL NOW.
FINALLY, I can have literally ALL my favorites duke it out in one single game. Pure bliss for me.
Oh, and the Smash team made my wife super happy to be able to play as Daisy. Well done.
@Yorumi yeah well then that is less of a Nintendo problem and more the industry, and I don’t disagree. It’s one of the reasons I left the industry. Basically, AAA titles have a creative idea every so often and then every big game copies it (I enjoyed the new God of War but it did in a lot of ways feel similar to Horizon Zero Dawn which fet similar to Breath of the Wild which felt similar to... you fet the drift). AAA games don’t have to innovate much so they don’t. On the other end of the spectrum is indie games... and, assuming the studio can stay afloat, indie games are where most innovation happens and they are great but often times are shorter experiences that make it hard to afford to keep getting them when you can get one AAA game that lasts hundreds of hours. Personally, I think indie devs are the only ones who can break the cycle and it’s starting to happen... but it’s an awkward time where most of the market is still AAA games of which we have a small selection or indie games where we have an endlessly overwhelming collection (which tends to favor PC gamers). As I previously stated, honestly the only E3 presentation that seemed interesting to me is Microsoft’s (and I don’t have an Xbone) so yeah, I think I’m more or less on the same page as you if I’m understanding you correctly now. I do think SNES and N64 were the golden years of gaming (GameCube wasn’t so bad too, though the gems began to get sparse). PS2 also had a LOT of good games but PS3 and onward it started to thin...
Perhaps another factor is budget. The price of developing games keeps going up, and studios can only afford so many projects at a time. Whereas a couple decades ago, a game required only a couple dozen people to make, now we’re up to hundreds. Music requires an entire team, not one or two composers. Same with art, same with writing... coding... it’s all become so complex. Studios have to spend all their resources on one or two games at a time, instead of pumping out 3 or 4 games a year they just can do 1... and that may take resources away from innovation. If the game bombs, the loss is more monumental, so why take risks?
Sadly I don’t see these trends going away anytime soon, and our best bet is some of the best indie studios becoming full sized developers (which requires time and support).
@MikeW I definitely agree with you on that. The only other thing I was hoping for was a bombardment of character move set reworks (for characters like Luigi and Ganondorf) but it appears that most of these character updates are cosmetic.
Why do I have a feeling that by the time this game launches with in December, I will still be playing the same three stages, the only ones unlocked at the beginning of the game, in "Brawlout"?
@QuesoCuliao Celebration of video games is exactly right.
I wasn't particularly interested in this new Smash, having never really gotten into Smash U, which was my first. I think it's a fabulous celebration of video games, but I couldn't manage to put the time/effort in to learn the game.
But this Direct... wow, I loved it.
I actually lol'd in delight when "Everyone is here" dropped.
Then my jaw actually dropped when they said Kirby had a copy ability that allowed him to costume up as every other character. This made me start thinking "I might have to get this game".
And then Daisy. Beautiful Daisy. She sealed the deal. I'm getting the game.
I loved that Smash presentation.
Missed opportunity. They should have brought in Ashley from WarioWare (maybe she's in it, but I'm doubting the roster will get much bigger). Still, at least it isn't a SSB4 port. 7/10 overall.
Best Smash game already. I'm expecting maybe 6 more newcomers, but the roster is just spectacular and the game looks fantastic!
Edit: After looking through this comment section, I am starting to believe Nintendo fans may be impossible to please. If this was shown in the second year of the Wii U, everyone would be going crazy. Were people actually expecting Metroid Prime 4?
@Yorumi I agree. Middle ground would be nice. Once again, we may see that in the coming years as indie studios grow but can’t yet afford AAA level titles?
Did i just see ridley!!!
epic! And beautiful cutscene. Like watching a movie! Wanting more!
When THIS guy is playable:
I'm sold.
They missed a great chance to get mah boi Kyle Hyde up in there.
He and his paperclip will have their day.
This game looks epic! But RIP Waluigi Daisy gets in but Waluigi is stuck as an assist trophy again haha. So looking forward to playing as Snake, Wolf, BOTW Link, Young Link and Inklings
Cannot wait til Ridley mains complain of being too big a hitbox to be abused and how his power should be able to 1-shot most characters... seems like the next logical plan for the Nintendo crowd as they're already booming this year cause "no new games" were announced.
I did not expect it to hit it out of the park, many of the major teams got a release in the Switch's first year, and we're STILL seeing more than an average of one game released, by Nintendo themselves, every month.
But clearly not enough games, cause ports on a system that failed them don't count, not enough cause new IPs like Sushi Striker don't sell gangbusters, not enough cause not every major franchise is covered in the Switch's first two years. And we old hat everything we FINALLY get information on, like Fire Emblem.
Its Nintendoom at its ripest, and juiciest.
Mind you, we didn't know of Mario Tennis Aces nor Sushi Striker hitting the system till this year. And we still got 6 months and a potential of two Directs to cover. Not saying they still have huge guns for this year, but they always have more of something.
Marvel: Infinity War is the most ambitious cross-over in history.
Sakurai: Hold my beer.
NO DOOMGUY
NO BUY
@Bizzyb Why Nintendo fans love Snake it's beyond me he only appear on The Twin Snakes on GameCube and Snake Eater on 3ds game to me he is more a PlayStation character Bomberman would be a better fit same goes for fans of Cloud his game it's not even on any Nintendo console he only made a cameo on Kingdom hearts I think Sora would make more sense but that's just me
@GKO900 I've been playing Metal Gear games since I was 5 on my NES. I have played every mainline MGS game and bought a ps2 SOLEY for MGS2. So yea I'm happy he's back
@Pluto14 When I saw Daisy all I could think was how happy @memoryman3 is
@Randomname19 This isn’t a port..?
@Voldemort807 No, otherwise, we'd have the same Main Theme as both 3DS and Wii U Versions. We'd have a Split-Screen Smash Run.
So happy my personal favorite expectation Bomberman finally made it! Assist trophy......but still! Crossing my fingers for Simon Belmont and I'd be a truly happy NES gamer tribute camper! Surprised Akuma or Arthur from Ghosts and Goblins still hasn't shown up, unless I missed them as an assist before?
I wouldn't mind Ray Man and Shovel Knight being included also! Or even a Contra assist trophy!
