Take this one with a grain of salt, because things are about to get crazy.
To begin the usual rumour-mill hype with less than a week to go until this year’s E3 kicks-off, we have a blurry photo of what is allegedly a section of Nintendo’s show floor at the event – and in it, a poster with the title, “Mario Maker.”
This one has been doing the rounds for a short time now, and actually seems quite feasible when compared to rumours based off printed sheets of dubious authenticity.
Make of it what you will, but we’re willing to admit that Mario Maker is at least a reasonable leak prior to E3 2014 and Nintendo’s Digital event next week. The title alone is strangely reminiscent of the constructive nature of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series, and even the one-time Warioware: DIY game on DS, where players could create their own mini-games — Nintendo even demonstrated how the former could be recreated in the Nintendo Web Framework back at GDC 2014.
Perhaps Mario Maker is some sort of hybrid or reworking of these above mentioned games – or it's something completely new altogether. One thing it does sound like, is do-it-yourself Mario themed software; based on the poster itself it'll be using a stylus - so it's open to both the Wii U and 3DS for now.
Guess we’ll just have to wait and see until next week, or at least until a bit more information surfaces. Let us know if you think Mario Maker is the real deal in the comments below.
Thanks to Jonathan for the tip.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Luigi Maker or bust.
Sounds to me that this game could be a do-it-yourself game. Play games in the Super Mario Bros. engine but with custom stages.
If somebody only told me about this, I would've found it hard to believe. But seeing that banner, it's actually one of these kind of surprise moves that befit Nintendo's way of appealing to both casual and core audiences, so right now I'm willing to believe that this is coming.
Villager, Pikachu and Kirby (?) all look like they're standing on bases. Like NFC figures.
Oh yeah, and Mario Maker sounds awesome
It's somewhat questionable, if you ask me. I think someone had a picture of an empty showroom and slapped on the SSB images as well as the "Mario Maker" image.
@Odnetnin Luigi Maker will be DLC for 29,99€/$
I didn't think nintendo were at E3 again this year ???
@PinkSpider Only their presentation. They actually have the largest booth space out of every company.
@PinkSpider
What made you say that and when were Nintendo not at E3?
@PinkSpider
The unfortunate by-product of media and fans making a big stink out of not holding a stage presentation.
Yes, they're going to be at E3. They were at E3 last year, and every year before that. The only difference, is instead of standing on the expo stage to make all the big announcements, and having that streamed across the internet and Twitch, they'll be streaming a pre-recorded video across the internet and Twitch. E3 is a week long expo with dozens of stage performances from developers, there's booths and demos set up, the whole nine. They simply found it advantageous to pre record their major announcement presentation for streaming to the world, as opposed to off-the-cuff reveals during a live conference.
They're actually (ironically), still doing stage presentations too though, four of them actually (3 for games, one for the Smash Bros tournament),
I actually think it's a shame this has leaked early, and leaks in general. What's the point of spending all that money on an event, and then everyone knows about the reveals beforehand?
But apart from that, I'm guessing it's a 3DS game due to the stylus in the picture.
@MrGawain The Wii U has a stylus
@MrGawain
It could just as easily be a Wii U game since the Wii U also has a stylus.
Eww, Super Mario Bros engine. Gimme New-Mario-Maker, not this old-school garbage. cough cough
I can FINALLY MAKE SUPER MARIO LEVELS?!?!?! YEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Right idea. Wrong franchise.
They should have a track editor with Mario Kart 8.
The poster looks more like a level designer application, letting you build your own 8-bit 2d mario bro's style video game from stock images and animations. This would open up massive paid DLC too
We need Captain Falcon Maker.
Not F-Zero Maker...that would be silly...but a game/app that let's you build rooms with bricks for Captain Falcon to unleash his Falcon punches on.
Make that Nintendo, or you are fail!
There's something about the 'Mario Maker' text which seems off, I'd have thought they'd stick with the normal text used for Mario games. That said, I really wouldn't mind if this was actually a game, as long as it's an eshop title.
@MAN1AC But how would a track editor actually work so that it would be efficient and you could actually create something more than just grassy-straightforwards-racing-plains levels with it.
@craigmoss19 @Nik-Davies
Yes, I'm aware of that, but the Wii U stylus is longer than the 3DS stylus and either black or white. The stylus in the picture is cherry red.
So nyah.
A Mario game in the style of LittleBigPlanet us definitely something I'd buy. I'm hoping it's an eShop game rather than one of their big surprises though.
I'm so excited for this E3!
Where on earth did you find that picture?
Where on earth did you find that picture?
@Liam_Doolan I THINK I HAVE IT!! I believe the image is real, but the 'mario maker' banner is pasted on. The rest of the banners (ssb4 characters) all only take up the top half of the columns. And these columns all have two different shades of white; one with no banner and the other with a decal on a white background. However, the mario maker poster fills the whole column bit for some reason maintains the split colours! Also, something just looks off about the text and where the image is cropped. Another hint is that the SSB4 (on top, semi circle) banner is single, so there is one banner for per 'section'. Only, the mario maker secrion has no top semicircular banner to seperate it from smash, implying it is actually just a photoshoped smash column!!
Where is memoryman3, the resident expert on phony and doctored images when we need him!
Could be photoshopped, but if real, the stylus does looks more like a 3DS. That said, there's no reason it couldn't be released on Wii U as well, and would actually be a perfect title for Nintendo to finally introduce crossbuy! Buy it on one, get it on the other too, and any user-generated content you download could automatically download to both platforms.
I'm betting it's part of their own take on the whole Skylanders/Disney Infinity platform. Create little levels that your NFC figures can play in...or unlock items for level creation via the NFC figures.
Also, I don't have much hope based solely on that banner, but I really hope you would be able to make more than just SMB1 style levels. Hopefully at least SMB3 and World type levels will be included as well, preferably even mix and match elements within the same level. Perhaps other games' graphic sets could be added later via DLC to keep the game fresh longer and not overwhelm people by throwing everything out all at once.
If this is real, that seems pretty cool and actually pretty reasonable. I do wish a Super Mario World theme is part of it but I doubt that even if it is real.
FAKE! If there's one thing Nintendo doesn't do it's letting leak BAD looking banners of MARIO software and software that let's players CONTROL the level design at that. Terrible job.
Also a level creator game would not be a practical demo station title even if Nintendo did make such a lame thing.
Every booth behind it is SSB4..... That proves it cuz none of the other games at E3 have official artwork.
Fake. Simple as that. Why you ask? Well, for one thing the 'Mario Maker' text doesn't exactly align with the top of the poster. Second, the bricks below the poster look awkward, especially considering every other display left that part blank. Third, wouldn't someone have found the trademark for Mario Maker already?
@Nik-Davies Good call- it looks as though they are the actual figurines...
So much for E3....
Mario Maker is a cool idea but not my thing.
Maybe the game will be much more than something akin to LittleBigPlanet, maybe the game will be somewhat nostalgic for the main game whilst slowly adding challenges as you go during a respective "Mario's" "Plot". Maybe the game will be the Mega Man Universe of Mario games?
The Narrative could be that Mario (or the player's main Mii?) could be having a Dream/Nightmare, somewhat mirroring Mario 2's plot, like 1 stage could be playing as SMB1 Mario (who can't pick up Koopa Shells. can only use Super/Poison Mushrooms/Fire Flowers) on a Mario Bros 3 stage with the inability to scroll backwards.
Nintendo could probably have contests for player-made worlds to decide which ones are promoted to a front lobby and/or become official worlds, whilst eventually adding updates to the game which adds SMB2 Peach/Toad and maybe objects/characters/mechanics from the gameboy handheld titles like Bombshell Koopas and Wario, who could sacrifice coins as a throwing weapon whilst using hats? (super mushrooms is probably poison for him)
It would fit the description of the the new 3DS title. Maybe it could utilize NFC?
And is it me, or is the very far booth a Kirby game!?
Bit dubious looking this... though couldn't outrule a Wii U version of Animal Crossing - particularly as Nintendo has basically adopted a 3DS strategy of recovery onto the Wii U
Custom stages, yes. Mario, no. Imagine the legend of Zelda, the original of course with custom stages. Oh. My. Gosh.
Lots of speculation but I think Liam spelled it out pretty clearly, a 3DS game in the same vein as Wario and Mario - Donkey Kong. Makes sense as a simple 3DS game, dont see it on Wii U which just got both NES remix games. And it might work w/ the NFC figures but it wont be the focus of the game, which will just be making simple levels similar to the stage creator in SSBB. This wont be anywhere near the creativity of LBP. The picture reminds me a bit of Scibblenauts so PERHAPS there are numerous levels that need to be solved while Mario tries to save Peach, but thats a stretch.
If this is something they are actually making, then they had better have more! I for one am worn out on Mario games. When I was young we got one every few years so it felt like a huge surprise. I remember seeing Super Mario World for the first time and being blown away by the colors and 16-bit graphics! Now, they just keep shoving them in our faces. Never thought I would get tired of Mario but it happened and I blame Nintendo for releasing too many of them. They need to show Zelda WiiU, Metroid, Star Fox, and F-Zero or don't bother coming. Sony and Microsoft will have lots of games and surprises so Nintendo needs to do the same. And please announce an account system already so I can buy your digital stuff!
"Take this one with a grain of salt"
Ok, sure
(5 seconds later)
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH
[hops around uncontrollably]
[kisses the NintendoLife staff, one by one]
SOMEBODY CHECK MY PULSE, MY BREATH, MY EVERYTHING
HEEEEEEEEEELP
Those character photos look like assist trophies for SSB, so even if SSB does get NFC figures maybe they'll just be for assists and we wont need to buy characters to play as them? Of course then why would people buy them? Guess I really just don't see toys working well with a fighting game, I think they need to be in a game where you are more commited like Animal Crossing or Tomodachi or Pokepark.
@Nik-Davies
Those bases look to me like Smash Trophy bases. They are Smash combatants after all. If the faraway thing is Kirby.
Still not sure this is real
@Action51
You should have said 'Hyrule Warriors' and he would be here, faster than Epona
@Action51
Let's summon him: hey, @memoryman3, you're neeeeeeee-deeeeeeed!
That "Mario Maker" text just doesn't look right. The Ma in Mario isn't even on line with the Ma in Maker. Look close at that first m and a, then compare it with the other. Who knows, I haven't had my coffee yet.
Advance Wars 3DS deserves the 90 minute conference over Mario Maker any day.
It could work if they make the levels easy to create. Also I expect sharing levels will be a big promotion so you could be looking at endless new SMB levels. Hell, I'd imagine there'd be some in-game created levels. Imagine new SMB levels made by Miyamoto or any of the former staff of SMB? Now that would be a selling point.
Hm...I wonder if the Ice Flower would work in a game using the Super Mario Bros. engine...?
Wait...is it just me, or is that a Paragoomba on that poster?! But they didn't exist until Super Mario Bros. 3!
So this is basically Megaman Universe, but with Mario.
Or Full Screen Mario.
Meh, I'll just wait for everything else.
@JaxonH Not to mention that Iwata's down for the count due to his illness.
This could be such an awesome idea. I wonder if it would be for Wii U and 3DS.
@TobiasAmaranth
You are literally delusional. The old engines are infinitely better than the new garbage Nintendo puts out 3 times a year.
I hope Mario Maker is real. I have fond memories when I was in elementary school and my friend and I would draw our own Super Mario Bros. levels on paper. His parents wouldn't allow him to own a video game system (I know, that's cruel) so these pieces of paper and when he came to my house were as close as he got to gaming. I wish I still had those paper drawings!
Anyways, if this comes out, I will buy it. I think I would prefer this on my 3DS instead of my Wii U. I could see my son and I designing levels and then trading them via streetpass. That would be a blast.
Pretty sure it's not a game but some setup at e3
I told my wife a few years ago that a LBP like Mario game would be HUGE I really hope this is it
The concept sounds cool for "Mario maker" but honestly it doesnt really interest me kinda reminds me of when they first showed Hyrule Warriors i was like meh but then when they showed off more i was like wow i gotta get this game. Maybe this will be the same once i get more details i will get more excited but right now im jus on the regular E3 hype train
This could be love.
Hiring a showroom is a lot more effort than printing off a game list and taking a photo or writing crap on bubblews so if it is a fake this what I want to see more of (I'm still reeling from the Warios Woods remake April hoax someone did years ago).
Odd thing is the smash bros posters. The Mario Maker one is much taller. Not sure how to think either way.
@Prof_Clayton
I agree. I also feel that it would have a logo, not that generic font. Most Mario games have colorful letters for their titles.
@8bitforever Couldnt agree more.
So over Mario right now, bring on the real news!!
Im thinking this could be an eshop game for both systems and be Nintendo's first app game for IOS and android.
I don't see them releasing a Super Mario Bros. Maker that let's you do things that were not possible in the first Super Mario Bros. I am pretty sure that gombas could not stack until Super Mario 3D Land or New Super Mario Bros.
I could be wrong, but that and the other things pointed out make me think this is a fake.
@Action51 he was banned
If this is true, then it is a waste of a slot that they have to show at e3. What a disappointment if it turns out to be real. Nintendo always fails to impress.
I wonder if this might have been the reason Nintendo had the one Mario website taken down. You know the one...where all of the original SMB was playable and had a level creator.
A SMB level editor? I'm cool with that. But it needs to use elements from SMB3.
Best-case scenario: it's a Super Mario game editor with all the sprites and models from NES and SNES era, Game Boy (Color, Advance), and Wii(U), with online level sharing and rating, and comes in a nice collector's edition on disc. Or Nintendo completely surprises me with something I couldn't even think of, that's even more awesome. Worst case: it's dlc for NSMBU, which still isn't all bad.
@faint
You just made my Friday. Thanks!
Anyone else predicting a new Animal Crossing for WiiU?
If it's a level editor, YES!
By the way, the font of the text looks slightly similar to Mario Paint's logo...
Hmmm...
finally.. this is a must have for me. just look at my mario vs donkey kong 2 channel on youtube. just type my user name into youtube and you will see all the levels i made for that game.. i only uploaded a handful but made like thousands.. sooo fun!!! please NINTENDO BRING IT!!!! and do super nes and 3d renditions after
I have a feeling this is real. Why would someone go through the trouble of making anything more then a list of games right before E3. Also, who would actually come up with this as a leaked game? It's such a low key eShop like title. Sorta in the same vain as NES Remix. If it was actually fake I'd expect something like Super Mario Galaxy 3.
I love how everyone's got a smartphone now and yet every "leaked" image still looks like one of bigfoot.
Nintendo have been working on games that require the Wii U Gamepad and wouldn't be possible without it. This could be it. It could also be the start of a Maker franchise. Imagine Zelda Maker, Metroid Maker or, please, Pokemon Maker. Given the number of fan made Mario games they've shut down, making a series of engines available for bedroom programmers could be a lucerative way forward for Nintendo.
First of all, that doesn't make sense for that poster to be there when Smash challengers are on the other sides.
Secondly, I don't think it's Nintendo's M.O. ever in a Mario game to put a trampoline DIRECTLY on top of another trampoline.
I'm not buying it.
http://youtu.be/a5e1-fvglMs?t=1m12s
Please Nintendo, do a "Secret of" level editor from sunshine.
Also the Zelda Maker and Metroid Maker sounds good on paper but i dont think it would be as good in reality because they are more about puzzles and collecting items. Platforming is ideal for level editors. place a trampoline here and a block there .. flag pole at the end.. test it, works. share with world.
how do you do that with zelda puzzles or metroid ?
Also, i would not be surprised if Nintendo Software Technologies is working on this. remember that footage of them showcasing and editor using html5? maybe this Mario Maker is using what they learned with Mario vs Donkey Kong and porting that tech to a basic mario game. now you can create levels in your browser as well. then play it on your 3ds or wii u. now how about that for a prediction. i dont know any other consoles doing that.
@MrGawain Generates more publicity if it leaks early which is the main goal.
@sinalefa Why would someone being banned make your day? Regardless of the reason or if someone did or didn't deserve it, someone else's misfortune is never a cause for celebration. Well, at least that is how I look at it so no offense but I would find it really sad to think that people would enjoy this.
I'm gonna go with fake. The bad quality of the image kindda adds to that. Who the hell have that kind of sorry **s camera? That's an effect too. And I think, as the arrangement shows, it should be another Smash character the one displayed there. This game should have their own space as it always has been with new games every year!

The "Mario Maker" text is not very well aligned with the top of the poster. The bricks look funny and unaligned with the edges too.
And there's this...
Yes, that's the same hand. If I'm shoping a fake poster and I want it to look as official as it can, I'd take and official image to do it, of course. Copy/paste and it's done. You could say Nintendo own the image and they can use it as much as they want, but they don't have the need to do that as they have a very large image stock.They can recycle if they want to but I don't remember Nintendo doing that.
Don't get me wrong, this would be awesome, and I hope I'm wrong. This game, with the capability to skan figurines... I mean. play any Super Mario Bros stage you can imagine with any Nintendo character!? Sold!! It would be like an official Super Mario Crossover with stage editor. Take my money now!!
Yeah, it does seem rather fake..
Seems feasible, but I'll wait for the official word to make sure. I feel like there's an important balance to be struck here. If this is real, I hope Nintendo can find that balance.
I always thought that Nintendo should make a kind of Little Big Planet style game with Mario, although I think even the most ardent Wii U fan has to be burned out on him by this point. Still,,this could be the kind of thing that revitalises the fan base, but I would hope that this isn't the only "big" surprise that Ninty has at E3, assuming this is real.
@faint Finally.
I would be surprised if this isn't real, actually. This is exactly how people found out about New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if I remember correctly.
This looks awesome. I think it will be an eShop release, maybe even a freebie for a limited time. Imagine everyone being able to upload their own custom made versions of SMB for everyone to download and play. It would be wonderfully brilliant.
@TheRealThanos Agreed. (Seems quite common for people to get off with stuff like that though).
Okay, this sounds awesome. I hope they combine assets from SMB1 with assets from SMB2, SMB3, and SMW as well. I have predicted this in the past, and now it's finally happening! I hope it's released on the Wii U eShop and very affordable. I'd also like to be able to share and receive levels, as well as being able to record myself playing through the levels.
@MAN1AC Oh come on. You'll be able to design your own levels based off of Super Mario Bros., and hopefully even its successors! How is that not awesome?
Could this be the secret 3DS game that Nintendo is going to do a full presentation on?
Use the figurines to add sprites to your games. Do you want Link to be the main character? Scan Link and his sprites are added. As an aspiring game designer, I really want this rumor to be true.
If its all Mario, Mario and NFC I will cry!! I want Metroid! I want Starfox!
@Nik-Davies I think that's the Smash Bros. logo.
@TheRealThanos
I respect your opinion, but as you have noticed NL's mods are very understanding and never unfair. So the guy just kept asking for it with his conduct.
The way I see it, getting rid of a troll in our otherwise nice community is a reason to celebrate.
@unrandomsam Thanks.
@sinalefa Browsing through his comments you can easily see that there are a lot of normal ones. The guy has a strong opinion, I'll give you that, but it seems to me that a troll is someone that almost makes a profession out of it and is decidedly unwilling or unable to make a normal comment EVER and that is not what I see there. He may have been trolling, but he isn't one. Either that or it is a hobby he occasionally indulges in.
The old saying goes: "if it looks and sounds like a <enter label> then it probably is." and that does not seem to apply here. We're all trolls occasionally because some people have a distinct need to be right or have the upper hand (especially when they believe their opinion is the only one that counts) and some people can deal a lot better with resistance from other commenters than others, I certainly had my fair share of run-ins with some highly irritating and "holier than thou" SOB's on here that seem to fit that label. And the same goes for how people are able to deal with the sometimes rather silly censorship on NLife which, as an American, I also REALLY had to get used to.
There are far worse things to be found on the internet than sh*t and d@mn, so it seems rather childish having that turned into something ridiculous and to me decidedly unmanly like poopoocacadoodieliedoo. A user's self-correcting system based on warnings/yellow cards/three strikes would be far superior and more easily manageable as well. But once again, all of this is just my two cents.
I do however respect your opinion, just as much as you do mine. Would be a scary world if everybody would always agree with each other all the time. I am a little sad, though...
SPECULATION: Mario Maker is a stage editor program in the same vein as LittlebigPlanet, AKA, a bland platforming game where anyone can build a boring level. Not my cup of tea, but I'm sure it will be a moneymaker, which is good for Nintendo in my book.
Me personally, I hate user editable content as they are always boring to play. Very VERY rarely does anyone do anything truly groundbreaking or on-par with professional level designers using a user friendly level editor. I hope this is real AND fake for very different reasons.
@AshFoxX,
Little big planet looked great, but if the user generated levels where fun I don't know. I partly agree: There always feels something off with user generated levels. You always feel that it wasn't made by a professional, or that elements are out of place (like some elements only belong in the levels they where originally made for)! But I recently saw a Xbox360 program that looked really impressive. With that you could make anything you wanted, in a great way. At least that's how it looked.
But Mario maker: If this is a real game, its probably a game where you can make your own nes/snes Mario with all the sprites. But those things exist FOR FREE on the internet as long as internet exists, so there's no real need for it.
@Henmii That would be Project Spark.
Yeah, that's the one.
Well it happened
