Atlus has confirmed that popular 3DS RPG Shin Megami Tensei IV is coming to Europe later this year.
Unlike the Japanese and North American editions of the game, Shin Megami Tensei IV will not be getting a physical release in Europe — it will be exclusive to the 3DS eShop.
"Shin Megami Tensei IV has it all: an exciting story with multiple paths and memorable characters, the most captivating cast of monsters this side of Kanto, fun, engaging combat, and a whole heap of style," is what we said in our review. "If you're looking for a 3DS game to sink your teeth, claws, and time into, this is as good as it gets."
Are you looking forward to playing this cult RPG, Europe? Were you hoping for a physical release? Let us know with a comment below.

Over a year after the us release, digital only and probably 40€? No thanks, I'll get PQ instead.
Yes finally! I was so close to importing it and buying an american 3DS
better then nothing, plus I'm sure they'll discount it at some point.....
I am so disappointed that there is phyical release but I will take an eshop release then them not releasing it here at all.
Would rather someone bring over Rune Factory 4
Really happy about this.
I really want this game. But one thing that disturbs me and often makes me question my desire is in the character. The middle person in the picture. That hair. Why does it freak me out?
@Humphries90 Its a wig.
Atlus can shove SMTIV up their a** right where the sun don't shine, we wait a whole year for this an eshop only release at £30/40 disappointing really disappointing.
YEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS ! Finally !
I could care less about it being digital only and the price is perfectly fine too, ive paid more for less.
One of the best announcments for me right there for sure. What could turn this E3 up to eleven would be, that Rune Factory IV would find a new publisher for europe...sigh
I'm quite disappointed with the non-physical release, if they didn't announce it at the direct ages ago, Ghostlight would of tried to pick it up.
They better market this well since theres still a smt x fire emblem collab and would wonders for that game.
Anyway I'm still buying it since its my favourite series
Would have liked it as a physical retail version, but it's better than nothing.
Another game I have been looking forward too for awhile now. Hope it's a good 'un.
I ended up buying Soul Hackers on the cheap, and importing SMT: Strange Journey, as I thought this game was never coming out over here.
Wow, thanks Atlus, but it seems like you don't get my money this time.
And Europe is shafted yet again. Wonder if we will ever get Rune Factory 4... Been waiting for ages for even an announcement
I might still get this when it releases but no physical is annoying.
Finally I was starting to think we'd never get this.
Looked up the file size for the game. Almost 2gb, well that will be a while to download with my internet speed.
I'm just glad it's getting here somehow. More and more I can see the benefits of digital-only — and this comes from a collector of older video games. Games such as SMT IV soon turn out to be a pain to find if they go retail, especially in some countries, and get overpriced on eBay in no time because of that. At least on the eShop it's always conveniently there. Retail is great for big releases, but for cult games it sucks if you're not at a big city and have to resort to buying on the internet, shipping fees etc. No game stores where I live would store SMT IV for sale. One copy or two would appear in the first few weeks and than it would be gone forever.
Ah, finally.
At this rate, I'm glad the game is coming over here at all!
I really wasn't holding out much hope these days.
I played through this game, and I have to say: apart from looking great and playing swell (though the later bits are either too easy or too hard), the game is a slippery slope downhill from grace. Not to spoil anything, but the story leaps off the rails at one point and goes in multiple bizarre directions just to force some philosophy down your throat. At that point, several plot holes pop up and turn this game into a jumbled mess.
But hey, at least the gameplay is great.
Please tell me that Nintendo is still localizing a retail version. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!!!!
Well, it's been awesome so far, E3, but this is actually really sad news. Download only = no buy. And I've been waiting for this game for quite some time now. I was more than prepared for a 'no limited editions for Europe' announcement, but no physical release is a second slap after offering the other cheek.
Wow and only a year later. Sorry it took so ling guys, it's totally worth it just they better not try to charge 10$ more for it like they did here. Don't fall for that crap!
@GuardianKing I had no problems with the story whatsoever. Was interesting enough to hold my attention and had a good anime feel to it. Sure it was confusing and or didn't make sense at time but was still entertaining for me.
@Spoony_Tech
I agree. I got the limited edition to make those extra $10 worth it. At least we got the $30 credit for registering this and FE:A.
Man, I've been waiting for those news for far too long... Here's hope it'll be reasonably priced.
@sinalefa That 30$ credit was awesome. I was getting it regardless so what a bonus. Just like the MK8 promo. I'm still getting it regardless and yet get another free game out of it, score!
such a shame we won't be getting a copy of the game and box in the uk / eu don't nintendo like us or something. We play games too this side of the world it's not just america.
Why couldn't someone other than freaking Atlus be responsible for these games... They make great games, but terrible business decisions.
Too little, too late. I already imported it either ways.
*** 4 U bloks that have gone 64gb +plus for your digital 4 life collection, THIS game is one of the BEST / Mature games ever made for 3DS so far !!! You might want to wait untill it goes on sale ont he eshop & also get ALL of the DLC esp. if you have a rockin sd card and a rockin credit card LOL !!!
So glad this is coming to Europe! If the price is wright it's a day one purchase. If it isn't, i'll wait for a sale.
No physical release. Revenge for Senran Kagura Burst? XD
Though I'd like to have a physical version of the game, I have to admit that eShop releasing is a better idea since it can reach to someone like me, who does not live in an European country but had an EU 3DS.
I know people in UK can't care less about localization, but for all other countries this is crap.
€ 40, only english, only digital, one year later. Back in the 90's!!!
I really wonder what Nintendo France are smoking sometimes. I'm guessing all their talk about working hard translating the game was about translating the operations guide.
As for the game release. I am pleased I can start to put this sorry saga behind me (I stopped caring about the game long ago, it was painful so easier to stop caring). I will say one thing though. It is an utter insult to wait over a year from announcement with no info from either the announcer (Nintendo) or the developer (Atlus) about where it is only to half release it in the end. At the very least it is polite to inform people about why it took so long (it shouldn't have PEGI rating+changing one byte of the ROM header is not a year long task).
If it is £31.99/€40 ala Conception 2 I'll wait for the half price sale. I think Atlus USA will have no problem with waiting a year for my purchase (and if they do then they are hypocrites). That is assuming they remember to give Europe sales on eShop games (like they seem to do every month in America) otherwise they can wait forever.
Full price and digital only? Thank you but no thanks.
Are you kidding me?!?!?!
It took them a WHOLE YEAR, only to release it as digital only?! Da heck
Until Nintendo introduces an account-based system to the e-shop, I refuse to use it.
This news is such a huge disappointment....
Why, Atlus, why....
It'd be an instapurchase if it was a physical release.
Now I know for a fact I'll never buy an EU model of any future Nintendo consoles... (unless they ditch the regional lock, ofc)
I feel a bit conflicted on this TBH. here in sweden eshop tend to be more expensive than physical so generally avoid it, and even if its like a year after japan and NA, i think it will be “fullprice” thus putting EU in the “pay more for less” boat again, not getting pre order bonuses, sound tracks or tarot cards etc but just the game costing same or more as NA physical.
This is THE game i have bin looking forwards to the most in the past year, and have hoped that we would get the physical they talked about some time ago, containing a hint/art book as well as CD with music, was told at some point but can't remember where that it was as a sorry for it being so late or what not but could be wrong.
will most likely pick it up, but if its full price i probably can’t afford it day one, as i'm in financial decline atm, feelings atm: Happy to get the game i most want atm, hope that i don’t get the privilege to pay more than NA by 25% for less goodies.
Great for you guys in Europe! All I can say is this........its my favorite game on 3ds by leaps and bounds. I know it won't be for some people. But what a story! Combined with great gameplay, battle system, music and I liked the 3d graphics. It was the best package I have played on 3ds to date. Just so good. I highly recommend it.
I think they should offer the game at 19.99 when it hits the Europe Eshop since there will be no cartridge or packaging with a CD and artbook. That would be totally fair. Let's hope so anyway.
@Windy Only problem i got with Jap studios that self publish digitally in EU is as i said above tbh, its usually more expensive than physical on eshop (Sweden anyway), you don’t get the extra stuff like CD or Art etc and we get it half a year to a year later than everyone else.
If its a bit below full price and digital, i would be ok with that, would LOVE it. but trend is that it will be full price, thus making it hard for me to pick it up even after such a wait due to low cash atm.
@Venachar yeah I'm in the USA and the game has been on sale in the Eshop up to 50% off already. I think they should offer that price as a starting price for Europe since there is no art or CD included. About the game its absolutely incredible. Its been my favorite 3ds title and is currently my favorite RPG of all-time
@Windy Long time fan of Atlus games, so i know i will love this. but Atlus.. PLZ, make me love it MORE with lower price xD
@Venachar I hope they do my friend cause its a ride worth taking.
