The reveal of Paper Mario: The Origami King for Nintendo Switch has seemingly added weight to those March rumours about the Super Mario remasters. If you go back even further to the start of this year, though, we ran a story about the "prolific" leaker Sabi - who said there would be a Paper Mario game released this year along with a 2D Metroid title.
Well, part of this story we tagged as a rumour at the time, is now obviously true. So what about Metroid? If you've watched the trailer for The Origami King and hang around until the very end, you'll see a funny little reference to the protagonist, Samus. It's rather odd to see another Nintendo series at the very end of an announcement trailer - especially after that rumour at the start of the year mentioning both, so what's going on?
Well, nobody is really sure if this is just a funny joke Nintendo decided to add to the end of the trailer for the new Paper Mario game, or something more. As usual, it's sent Nintendo fans on social media into a complete frenzy - with many comments making reference to the rumour about a new 2D Metroid game.
It could also be a reference to Metroid Prime 4 or the fact Kensuke Tanabe is the producer of both of these series (thanks, @g8rmwr). There's been ongoing rumours and listings for a re-release of the Metroid Prime Trilogy for Nintendo Switch as well - could it perhaps be a sign that this is on the way? What do you think? Is this just a funny end sequence or something else? Share your thoughts below.

What I'm wondering is if it'll have a gameplay function. Maybe it'll function like the "things" from Sticker Star and Color Splash? But instead of real-world things, they're costumes of other Nintendo characters.
super metroid rpg confirmed
How dare they reference their own IP
Looks like it was referencing 2d metroid games, he only fakes shooting and left and right 😅😅
If it's a new one or not, I don't know
Would be interesting if there's a chain of announcements incoming, and each one has a small hint about the next one 🤔
Then what does the Donkey Kong helmet mean?
Kensuke Tanabe is also the producer of all the Luigi's Mansion games, so don't be surprised to find a Luigi's Mansion easter egg somewhere within the game.
A completely new Metroid 2D developed by Mercury Steam and supervised by Nintendo? Shut up and take my money!
@brandonbwii Potential 2D Donkey Kong remake? Or new title?
What they should do since there won't be an e3 direct, is tease the next game reveal with each new trailer!
I'm filing this under "Easter Egg" status for now, but I'd love to be proven wrong.
Nintendo sure knows how to tease fans....
What if this trailer was originally for the Direct, and the video after this one was a Metroid trailer (trilogy, 2D, something). Seems logical.
I think I will be happy with whatever it is unless it’s Federation Force 2 or anything like Other M, though honestly I’m hoping for a Prime trilogy remake.
I hope it’s a hint for a new Metroid game or HD remaster on the horizon; a pointless tease is just a waste in my opinion.
Samus labo set confirmed.
Maybe you can use Amiibo in the game to have different outfits?
I'm just not seeing the appeal of this game. It looks almost identical to Color Splash. People have praised this game for the dark opening where Peach essentially asks Mario to join her cult. But remember Color Splash's "dark" opening shown in the start of the E3 trailer, where they get a letter in the mail that contains a Toad sucked of color? People have also mentioned the creepy Toad hieroglyphs on the walls of the pyramid, but those come straight from Sticker Star. There's no original characters except the main boss and your one ally, and even if this game does have partners, they're just generic enemies which defeats the whole purpose. While we haven't seen much of the battle system, I can already tell it won't be my taste. Mario even jumps on an enemy with "shiny boots," which sounds a lot like stickers. I don't expect much from this game, and I'm surprised it hasn't had a more divisive reaction. I want to love it, but I don't see the Thousand-Year Door parallels at all! All I see is Color Splash 2...
@NullPointerExcep Very smart on Nintendo's end if that's the case, if you think about it. Blessing their fanbase with out of the blue announcements such as this means inspiring speculation with little to no expectation for upcoming announcements like there is with Directs.
This means that us fans will actually be stoked when we see reveals and there will be little complaints, such as with this one. This trailer took me and everyone else by surprise, and I hope they keep this going.
@brandonbwii when? Where?
The screenshot shows a Goomba, right?
@Not_Soos Welp, someone call Nintendo and tell them to cancel this game. Because not_soos doesn’t see any appeal in it, so there must not be any.
I assumed that this was just a moment from the game? Or referencing something in the game? Maybe Mario can use helmets to gain additional powers? It didn't occur to me to see it as a tease for something else.
@BAN All I said was that I personally don't understand the hype because it looks to me just like the last two entries and not what people have been asking for. That's just my opinion and I understand I'm in the minority. I'm not condemning the opinion of anybody else, and you're free to disagree if you want. Healthy discussion is a good thing, and if someone can convince me how this game is a return to form, I'll gladly be proven wrong. No need to be snarky--I want to love this as much as you do.
@the_beaver hopefully as they did a cracking job with Samus Returns. Also alot of people wanted Samus Returns on Switch when it launched as at that point in time Switch was short on games. So could well be an enhanced Samus Returns with extra content.
Hell Zero mission, Returns and then Super Metroid all revamped in one collection? That would be right up there with MP trilogy HD for awesome games Nintendo could release this year.
Metroid VR. Is all I have to say
@Not_Soos Then don't buy it. Simple. Nobody forces you to buy a game.
I'm 100% sure Nintendo knows more about marketing than you do. And I think this game looks awesome.
Also why should it be a "return to form"??? Aren't developers allowed to improve? Look at Breath of the Wild or Mario Odyssey, both were completely different than the norm for Zelda and Mario, but they are the two most popular games of recent history. If you want to play the same game over and over again, you should get Call of Duty or Fifa.
@GrandScribe I actually wouldn't mind a version of Federation force with HD graphics and Actual Metroid Prime graphical style and modern controls. It was an alright little game for what it was (we all know what it wasn't, Prime).
@daebiya Yes, that’s what I was thinking too!
@Not_Soos Although I like the game concept and all (yeah, even Sticker Star was fun little time for me actually) I totally understand that Origami King can not appeal. But whats funny, people must watch out for their opinions cuz other users can destroy for it, haha.
@sandman89, was thinking a similar thing.
Maybe Mario's wearing a custom VR headset.
@Ooyah, a tease only insofar as they know everyone is pining for Prime 4.
@brandonbwii Tanabe does Donkey Kong also. Tanabe is amazing. Many think Retro was secret for Metroid and stuff, but before Tanabe got there, Retro was a joke and a failed company. Nintendo sent Tanabe there to straighten them up.
Prime Trilogy, new or remake of some 2D one or both.
@LifeRetro Yeah, I'm starting to remember why I haven't commented here in months, haha. It's a shame people can't just have opinions on the internet.
@Not_Soos yeah, like two weeks ago I was smashed for telling that Time travelling in AC is cheating xD
@NoNoseNosferatu,
Fingers crossed, I don't think I would want another 2D Metroid game, a nice HD remaster of the Metroid prime series while we wait for 4 would be awesome, imagine all the prime games in handheld mode, the last time we had a 3D handheld Metriod was hunters on the DS, don't get me wrong it looked amazing for the hardware, but HD versions of the prime games on the Switch screen would look awesome.
@sanderev
1. I won't buy it if it continues to not impress me. Simple.
2. I'm glad you think it looks awesome. Jealous, even. You've already won this battle by virtue of the fact you're excited about a new Paper Mario game, and I would love to be in your shoes. You should by all means continue to be excited, but with the understanding that not everyone will be, and that's okay.
3. They do know more about marketing than me. I never claimed otherwise.
4. I don't want to play the same game over and over again, that's why I didn't buy Sticker Star 2 and I'm not about to buy what looks like (in my OPINION) Sticker Star 3. Odyssey was a return to form because it ditched the linearity of 3D Land/World and brought back the sandbox style people begged for for two decades. Zelda broke many conventions but went back to the open-ended nature of the NES original and kept certain beloved staples in tact. There's a difference between a rehash and a sequel that refines a tried-and-true formula. Not every game needs to completely re-invent the wheel.
What's the point of getting confrontational about this? I'm glad you're excited, and I'm not trying to take that away from you or anyone. I won't go play FIFA or whatever because I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan, same as you. I'm sure Nintendo has put out a game you didn't like, whether it's Federation Force or Amiibo Festival. (Neither of which were a return to form, but that doesn't inherently make them great.) Maybe there's even a popular game that you just don't like. I don't understand why everybody hates Brawl nowadays, for example, but guess what? They do, and that's OKAY! Because it's an OPINION! And putting me down, or someone who happens to be into Call of Duty or FIFA because they express that opinion, just isn't cool.
I'm disappointed this is the state of things, especially when I love Nintendo every bit as much as you do or I wouldn't be on this website. This game probably isn't for me, but I sincerely hope it lives up to every last one of your expectations.
@Friendly In the original trailer, you can see a Donkey Kong helmet further off to the right.
They know full well what they are doing. The 2D Metroid (I mean, Mario even moves horizontally with 8 bit sound effects) and 3D Donkey Kong rumours are real. Bless them ^^
What I wish for is that it was a tease for a 2D Metroid game. Gosh how I enjoyed Samus Returns on the 3DS!
For me Metroid Prime 4 will release around 2022, so if they eventually release a Trilogy, it will be closer to that, to keep the hype strong even for those of us that aren't fans of the best bounty hunter out there.
But of course I may be completely wrong, just have to wait and see. Even though, this does put a smile on my face!
Not_Soos said he isn't interested in the game and defended that opinion with several reasons. Rather than discuss those reasons, BAN rudely invented a strawman position that Not_Soos wants the game cancelled. Sanderev followed with a non sequitur about marketing and another non sequitur about the game not having to be a return to form. Since only one of these three competitors is reading what their opponent is actually saying, they win by default. Win what? An internet comment, apparently.
On a more on topic note, I wondered when watching this what game mechanic role these play, if any. The folded thing talks about him fighting something like he's experiencing something in the helmet: is there a level in there or something? That would be fun.
It's a referrence to a VR feature.
@Dodger Oh boy, I win! I'm going to Disneyland!
Also on the topic, that's a neat theory. Could be like how in Color Splash, you could go inside of a Super Mario Bros. 3 screen and flip between 2D and 3D to traverse the level a-lá Super Paper Mario.
(How about that? I don't just blindly hate every aspect of these games and actually find some elements neat! This is unprecedented. )
I think it's a reference to the current pandemic. With Metroids everywhere. Mario actively taking a spot on the frontline to fight it.
@Markiemania95 Ah yes, I see it now. Thanks. You even see the mouth of him on this picture.
It actually gave me a mischievous thought about what it would look like if they made a Metroid game in a Paper Mario art style. That train of thought then went off the rails and I ended up with a metroid type game in the style of a Gerry Anderson show where you could see the wires and the handcrafted props (not dissimilar to Yoshi's Crafted World but more subtle). Now I kinda wish someone made something like that...
This is not a coincidance, its not the first time Nintendo doing things like this. We're gonna get some metroid news in the near future, mark my words.
There's also a Donkey Kong head, but the screenshot is cropped for some reason, so you can't see it here. I suppose these will have some effect on gameplay mechanics.
Or maybe these these are Metroid and DK-themed bonus levels? They seem like VR helmets. Maybe Mario puts them on and goes into bonus levels?
@Not_Soos This is a good point. BotW and Odyssey were praised because they did new things in aspects of the game people wanted. Doing something new isn't enough, we've seen multiple new things that flat out failed because they simply didn't appeal to what fans wanted out of the series. For example, Federation Force was new for Metroid but because it didn't have Samus and it didn't have the mazelike, Metroidvania exploration gameplay that people were waiting for, so it got a lot of hate and people ignored it. Here, people are looking for a Paper Mario game that plays more like a traditional RPG, and it's hard to tell if this is it. There are some aspects of the game that look promising, the overworld seems very open and explorable and the battle system looks like it could be very strategic, but they haven't shown enough of the game to indicate that the problems people had with Sticker Star and Color Splash have been addressed.
I am looking forward to this - that last Paper Mario game I played was Super Paper Mario on the Wii.
And what about the dk helmet?
I don't care about Mario or Pikmin, if all the rumors are true this year. So a Prime Trilogy would be the only thing I'd be excited for after Xenoblade. Boring year for me
@RPGamer if its a new game I hope its more like Zero mission or Fusion than Samus Returns.
I do believe we are in the Switch's prime right not. There are going to be many more games like these. We may be started to get a lot of third party support too. It is the best time to have a Switch.
Haven't the Metroid fans had enough teasing, Nintendo? They still haven't forgiven you for Federation Force or Blast Ball.
I’m so ready for some Metroid! 2D, trilogy remake or MP4 anything will do!
I don't think it's anything besides an easter egg or a cameo. Don't get too excited or you'll feel let down when nothing comes of it.
@Not_Soos well the good news is the rumours that originally revealed these games also said the new paper Mario would be influenced by old paper Mario like thousand year door. That was music to my ears as that’s one of my fav Nintendo games of all time.
Have faith!
My hunch is that the Prime Trilogy remaster is still a thing, but who knows.
I assumed Mario was in VR, hinting that there would be some kind of Labo VR support (going along the paper theme).
Frankly, I don't think there's any chance that this is "just an easter egg." I know we've all been burned by the rumor mill before, but this isn't a rumor, it's a Nintendo trailer. And this isn't a random detail in the background, where you have to pause the video at minute 1:42 to catch Mario with a Samus helmet behind a pillar. It's a long 10-second gag, following the Nintendo logo, after the trailer has formally ended, completely focused on Samus, and with a very suggestive line of dialogue about something we "don't see every day," namely, one of the few classic Nintendo IPs yet to have an official Switch game. I mean, it's impossible Nintendo didn't foresee the speculation that would ensue, so either they're just cruel or they have something Metroid-related up their sleeves.
Hope is a remake of other M. What a game.
I hope we see Prime 4 soon. I preordered when it was first announced.
I’m hoping for a quality prime trilogy remake. Always been on my backlog.
Also if they remake Mario galaxy, my paediatric exams will be failed
Time will tell if this is something.
Intelligent Systems were the developers of the 2d Metroid games up to Zero Mission.
This is just like Lucas referencing Star Wars in Indiana Jones. Or hell, Retro referencing Metroid in Donkey Kong.
Why are even journalists glossing over this?
@Not_Soos So then just say it doesn't appeal to YOU. There's a big difference between that and "I don't get why this would appeal to anyone." The latter always grinds my gears whenever I see it. Because it's essentially just a passive-aggressive way of throwing a little fit because you don't like that other people don't like/dislike the same things you do.
@BAN You're misquoting me. "I'm just not seeing the appeal of this game" was my exact choice of words. Note the use of the personal "I'm." If my lengthy replies haven't made it clear that I want others to be happy, I don't know what more I can tell you.
@datamonkey Thousand-Year Door is actually my favorite game ever, so I would love to be proven wrong. Rumors have had a history of not being completely accurate, though, like the Star Fox Grand Prix one that hasn't seen the light of day. I haven't dismissed this game entirely just yet, but so far, all I can see is Color Splash. I hope we both get the Paper Mario game of our dreams someday, though--whether this one is it or not. Here's to hoping!
@RPGamer if they bring Samus Returns to the Switch I don't want a port. I shouldn't have to buy an Amiibo to use Fusion mode, the Omega Metroids aren't that challenging for being the adult form, and I got really tired of the Metroids running away to other rooms. Without some polish the game ain't gonna look that good on a TV.
@Not_Soos agreed my man. I hope this is like TTYD and not colour splash too. I’d even settle for a TTYD remake or re-release but am staying optimistic for this one...
It's better to not spoil possible surprise announcements (though an unexpected announcement would be a surprise anyway) but I guess this means Nintendo will tease in many ways.
Oooh but hopefully this game still has more cameos
Something has to be coming up...
@Not_Soos How is your exact quote any different from my paraphrased version of it? The meaning seems to be the same, to me. But oh well, it's just a game.
@BAN That just means I don't find it appealing, it's not a knock toward anyone else. Besides, if someone doesn't like something, they may or may not see the merits that other people like, and if they don't, it's fine. Even if I said something as broad as "I don't see why everyone likes this game," that's not a diss at anyone for liking it, it just means I don't see it. If I did see it, it probably means I like the game. But again, everybody has different tastes and opinions. Now if I said, "People who like this game aren't true Paper Mario fans and will just blindly throw their money to Nintendo," that isn't okay because I'm using my opinion to make an offensive generalisation about the fanbase.
You're right though, it is just a game, which is why I don't understand why this has become such a big deal. I just wanted to have a friendly conversation and listen to the reasons why others disagree. Who knows, maybe someone would have convinced me this is a game worth keeping an eye on? But rather than offering your perspective so I can better understand where you and the thousands of other Origami King supporters are coming from (because I do want to be open minded about the game), I'm just being told that I'm petty and entitled for not currently agreeing with the masses. So if we can have a civil conversation about the good and the bad from this trailer, I'm all for it. Otherwise, I'm not wasting any more of my time defending myself.
Grammatically, "I'm not seeing the appeal of this game" and "This game has no appeal" are lightyears apart.
I | am seeing
Game | has
The subject of the first sentence is I. The subject of the second sentence is game. That means the first sentence's predicate is saying something about the speaker, Not_Soos, while the hypothetical second sentence is saying something about the game.
It's the difference between describing one's own personal experience with something that has an objective existence and making a claim about that thing's objective existence. That's a big difference. In English, we usually communicate personal perception either by using a 1st person subject ("I am not interested in this game") or by using a 1st person pronoun as indirect object ("This game is not interesting to me.")
This is like an end credits scene in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. There's going to be Metroid news soon, possibly even their next relatively big drop possibly handled like Origami King was. Could be 2D Metroid, Prime Trilogy or a Prime 4 trailer, there will be something.
If that wasn't meant to tease an upcoming Metroid announcement, that clip is in poor taste. I cannot imagine them wanting to troll the Metroid community after their decision to restart Prime 4's development last year.
@Tyranexx The fact that they've currently opted away from the Nintendo Direct format (hopefully just for now) and that it occurs at the end of the trailer after what would have been the closing screen makes it feel a lot more like a tease than an Easter egg. Even if it's not a tease, they certainly would have to be aware that fans would take it as such, which would be lousy to do just to troll.
I predict a rerelease of the original nes game on a cartridge for 59.99usd. Or a double pack with the gameboy sequel for switch for 159.99usd that includes a code to download and print your own poster.
@RPGamer I doubt they would do it but I wish they'd change the ending so its more in line with the original tone between the the Metroid Queen and the new last boss. In the original after you beat the queen the game conveys a sense of serenity, and triumph and encourages reflection but in the remake its replaced with building up the last boss. They could accomplish it easily by doing things like the game covertly creating a checkpoint after killing the Metroid Queen and having her provide enough items to recover all your health and such.
It would give the game parity with Zero Mission in how the Space Pirates rob Samus of her triumph against Mother Brain by shooting her down. It would also allow a feeling of triumph over the last boss that's independent of overcoming the Metroids. By robbing the player of their feeling of triumph it would also amplify the message that the Space Pirates are underhanded and opportunistic and help the player feel about the Space Pirates the way Samus does.
I say its a Metroid tease, probably for Prime 4 or a 2D Metroid. And its also a game-feature: Mario wearing helmets for certain purposes. A Samus helmet, a dk one, a goomba. But we'll wait and see!
@Deltath It's hard telling. I'm inclined to believe that we will be getting another Metroid game before too long, particularly if the rumor about a new 2D game is to be believed. This could be very well teasing the next trailer...or it's just an Easter Egg. I'm not one that gets my hopes up too much. That doesn't make the disappointment smart as much lol.
@Tyranexx Fair enough. I'm never too worried because I generally am not wishing for any specific game. I like most of the classic franchises so if I hear any new first party big title coming out, I get fairly pumped. Sometimes not having any idea what's coming is fun too. I know some people like to know way in advance, but I like getting surprised by those big last minute announcements.
I'd imagine it's nothing more than a weak attempt to continue to troll us Metroid fans.
Go on, make an F-Zero joke next.
@Deltath Agreed. I like being surprised; it's why I'm completely fine with how Nintendo typically handles announcements. The "Cool, it'll be out in two months!" feeling is more impactful than "Okay, so we'll see this game...five years from now?"
