@cleveland124 You are not an engineer and you have zero insight into the R and D efforts of Nintendo. You have zero idea of the quantitative level of energy and heat savings created by the OLED and whether they are sufficient to offset the increased energy and heat that would result from upclocking the Switch's components and enable consistently stable overall operation. You are a fan with a very vocal mouth. Again I request you be humble. Your "counter" is supposition at best. But as ever, thanks for your contribution. It helps to keep the comments section alive if nothing else. ๐
@cleveland124 So not only would a chipset change equate to a complete absence of logic and business sense (whether incremental or not) but the Switch despite being graphically underpowered in comparison to its mains supplied/desktop competition, is still capable of producing graphically lush titles when theyre exclusive and not ports designed for far more powerful systems. The hybrid nature of the Switch necessitates some drawbacks in its performance. That will always be a characteristic of a hybrid and that is something you as a consumer can either accept or dont accept. However the purchasing decision was yours. Do not bemoan Nintendos strategy whilst ignoring the external factors that inform said strategy.
Do not purchase a hybrid and then cry about framerates and resolution on ports near 5 years into the systems life. You have other options available to you with which to consume ports in higher graphical fidelity. I use my Switch for exclusives and my PS5 or PC for multiformat titles. Im about the games, wherever they might be.
@cleveland124 "Nobody was asking for 4k hardware in the Switch" - This is false. This was one of the most widely desired features voiced online at the height of the Switch Pro rumours prior to the Switch OLEDs unveiling. Lets not let ones own experience speak for the masses. Be humble.
"Its also pretty consistent with Nintendo's recent upgrade strategies to give late cycle power upgrades"
True. But in both recent generations you refer to (DS and 3DS) incremental revisions that brought just quality of life upgrades were more abundant and the favoured strategy of Nintendo.
Furthermore you need to consider the entirely different circumstances under which said revisions were introduced.
1) the aforementioned generations werent in the grip of a global chip supply shortage that some experts forecast will last till 2023. Under such circumstances an incremental upgrade using the same chipset/specification was the only logical revision strategy. Nintendo as whimsical and family friendly as they are are a business at the end of the day and make decisions with the expectation of making profit. A new specced Switch in 2021 would therefore amount to a paper launch in a similar fashion to the GPU hardware launches we've seen from both Nvidia(Nintendo's current GPU supplier) and AMD in 2020 and 2021 with both companies verifying therell be a shortage until at least late 2022. Not so great a time for new chips eh?
2) Both DS and 3DS launched woefully underpowered at a time when there were far more powerful (whilst remaining reasonably affordable) chipset options Nintendo couldve chosen. DS launched with the power of an N64 at around the same time the PSP launched as an underclocked PS2. 3DS launched with sub PS2 power(just with more modern shaders) at around the same time VITA launched with power midway between a PS2 and a PS3. Therefore Nintendo left themselves with a lot of room to manoeuvre revision wise in said generations so the circumstances are different. When the Switch launched in March 2017 it wasnt using ancient tech. The TegraX1 launched in summer 2015 and was graphically way ahead of the competition at the time. So when Switch launched Tegra X1 was available under 2 years on the market so was a different strategy for Nintendo as they were utilizing relatively modern hardware which at launch stood up very well. This was unprecedented for them in recent times. So this time around, Nintendo didnt start off way behind the curve. In terms of the mobile GPU space they launched very competitively. The issue is the mobile space is restricted by power and heat constraints, so GPU progress there is a lot slower and incremental in comparison to the desktop space. Hence why near 5 years after Switchs launch Steam Deck is PS4 power vs Switch being in between 360 and Xbox One. This is despite Valve saying they really went all out to get the most performant GPU they could get whilst striking the right balance between cost for consumer.
@Wesker Nonsense. Nintendo has always done incremental hardware upgrades like this for its handhelds. You only have yourself to blame if you looked at what the competitors did with the Pro and One X and expected the same strategy from Nintendo despite their long tradition of incremental revisions.
The Switch released in 2017 with GPU power in between 360 and Xbox One. Nearly 5 years later Steam Deck is releasing with cutting edge mobile GPU hardware and thats only reaching PS4 level power.
So a Switch Pro made absolutely no sense. It would have taken the shine off a Switch 2.
@BlackenedHalo Please engage your brain. The Switch is 2015 era mobile hardware meaning its visuals are supercharged and refined Xbox 360 calibre. So of course it wont be in keeping with the latest generation of mains supplied/desktop hardware. Why is this news to you? lol. When judging its graphics you do so bearing in mind the capability of the hardware. The graphics on display here look nice with improved image quality over the prequels and demonstrate good utilization of the Switch's hardware. Nothing to critique here except the logic centres of your brain.
@SwitchForce A GPU upgrade wouldve taken the shine away from the Switchs successor. Youve gotta remember mobile gpu performance is limited by battery tech, so the leaps in that area are smaller compared to the desktop gpu space. For example Switch on release lay in between Wii U and Xbox One in performance. A whole 4 and a half years later and Steam Decks releasing next month with only PS4 level performance just with a more modern architecture.
So if the Switch OLED had a GPU bump then the Switch 2 would def seem a lot less exciting.
Plus the Switchs momentum is solid enough to carry on selling decently for 2 years so there was no point.
@Grumblevolcano Not necessarily. Could simply be that this game was given the greenlight before the acquisition of Bethesda took place. Lets see what happens.
@DashKappei An ironic response given your angry rants and your claim of an attitude in my 1st message despite zero words or phrases used to justify such an interpretation. To sum it up youre just arrogant and got defensive when some dared to question you. Do better
@DashKappei There was zero attitude in my 1st reply. You made an assertion without referencing any evidence and I simply asked how was your point proven and by whom? A straight question. Dont get arsey or act like me asking for some reference (which you really shouldve provided yourself) is some kind of affront. Share knowledge and make this a respectful community. Throw that arrogance in the garbage
The Steam Deck doesnt interest me at all personally. Itll have zero exclusive titles built to really make use of its substantially greater specs(in comparison to Switch) relegating it to just an alternative way to consume my pc games in comparatively low fidelity.
I don't see this making a dent in the Switch's success. They attract different consumers. The ergonomics of this device are questionable and its not as convenient for spontaneous on the go multiplayer either. This is great for those who enjoy gaming on the go but dont like Nintendo titles, or those who already have a Switch but want access to titles that Switch will never get or has a port of but runs it poorly.
Its a great concept and the positive response indicates there's a market for it. But theres enough differentiation for this and the Switch to co-exist peacefully
There never was a Switch Pro. Leakers mistakenly merged details of Switch 2 with this OLED Switch. In 2023 we'll get the Switch 2 which gives Switch enough room to become 3rd best selling console hardware ever behind PS2 and DS and possibly even challenge them if there's a price cut and the games keep coming.
@SwitchForce Yure missing the point of this. There never was a Switch Pro. This Switch OLED was clearly in development in parallel to the Switch 2 and as leakers started to discover hardware news from inside sources they mistakenly merged the details thinking they referred to one piece of hardware. This OLED model isnt for you. Dont discredit it because of that point. You bought into rumours and ended up disappointed with this reveal. Thats a lesson to be learned from.
@Pascalkw The progression is good relative to the mobile gpu space but beyond that bubble it doesnt match the progression of desktop gpu performance.
Theres not one mobile game that is graphically more advaced than just the PS4s best titles and thats despite the latest mobile gpus possessing feature sets on par or even greater than the ps4 in some aspects. Theyre held back by the power envelope they have to operate in.
So great increases relative to other mobile gpus but not in comparison to gpus across the board.
So if they had released the fantasy Switch Pro now, the inevitable Switch 2 in 2023 would seem like a miniscule and worthless jump
There was never a Switch Pro. There was this and the Switch 2 in development same time. Leakers got details of both and merged them thinking the leaked info related to a single bit of kit.
GPU progress in the handheld world moves at a slower pace than in the desktop/console world. So a mid gen refresh as powerful as the rumours claimed would never have made sense. As when the Switch 2 did launch it could NEVER be much more powerful which would lead to disappointment and a underwhelmed reaction.
@Blue_Dread There never was a Switch Pro. This standard hardware revision was obviously in development at the same time as the Switch 2 and leakers mistakenly merged the two and thought it was one piece of hardware naming it the Switch Pro.
A 4K handheld as a mid gen refresh never made sense as handheld tech progression is limited by battery tech which moves at a snails pace. So releasing such a powerful mid gen refresh would make the Switch 2 jump completely miniscule.
The Switch 2 will have 4k output and DLSS and be out in like 2023. THAT makes sense.
@sixrings Mobile hardware on release is 5 to 10 years behind the performance levels of modern consoles. The Switch is based on 2015 mobile hardware placing its capabilities in between a 360 and an xbox one. When put into context 720p is understandable given the hardware. Especially when we're dealing with a poorly optimized port.
@SuperCharr Youre missing the bigger picture. Youve been a Nintendo fan for 25 years so youre prob in your 30s. Youre not gonna be around forever and Nintendos continued success cant solely rely on existing customers. Through animated movies and theme parks future generations buy in to Mario and co and thos can translate into more people buying Nintendo products giving them the resources to keep making the games we like and their success will see a conti ued contribution from 3rd parties who cant ignore successful install base.
@Mr-Fuggles777 Without being a developer we cant really make those kind of assumptions. The fact that its on rails has already been taken advantage of in other areas of the graphical make up through far better image quality and geometry than any other Pokemon game before it. But things such as fur shaders sap bandwith and as i mentioned previously theres precedence for such effects to be left out of Switch titles as we are dealing with whats effectively mobile hardware.
@Mr-Fuggles777 The Switch GPU is very bandwidth limited so something like fur effects could effect the framerate given the good level of detail in other aspects of the games graphical makeup. Its one of the reasons the Donkey Kong character model in Smash Bros Ultimate lost the fur shader the Wii U one had.
@Snatcher Ok course they will, just not for the current Switch which is good as id prefer a MK9 on the Switchs successor wth improved visuals, physics, A.I and track complexity all things that require more capable hardware. Any release on the current Switch wouldnt be distinct enough from MK8D making it pointless.
Id rather the Mario Kart team focus resources on making MK9 as good as it can be instead of splitting time and manpower on DLC for a launch window game.
Forget a Switch Pro. I just want them to release a Switch 2 in 2023.
Undocked in between a PS4 and a PS4 Pro graphics wise. Docked on par with a PS4 Pro but with added DLSS for image quality more in line with current gen consoles.
CPU would need to be 8 core minimum and be on par with Xbox series S in terms of capability to ensure a steady stream of ports throughout its lifetime.
720p OLED. This would be fine for handheld. Just the Switch to OLED would bring a marked improvement in clarity and contrast. Plus sticking to 720 would mean improved battery life plus all of the extra GPU grunt would have less of an issue keeping titles at native resolution in handheld mode.
Improved Joycons and haptic feedback, as well as a proper D-pad!
@Strictlystyles Support him by withholding your money thereby encouraging him to make great games, not by buying his duds. What's the incentive for him to do better if you incentivize his mediocrity?
@foobarbaz I disagree. The artstyles are agreed and created to accommodate the technical makeup of the system theyre on. Was HD a waste when Nintendos hardware was the standard def Wii? Of course not. Nintendo work with what they have. When Nintendo moved to the Wii U they adapted their artstle and assets accordingly.
When Nintendo eventually move on to hardware that has 4K and raytracing capability then again their art style will adapt,
We shouldnt rubbish or demean the value of great technological developments just because theyre beyond the capabilities of our chosen systems. Lets be objective.
@nab1 Agreed. BOTWs art style was made to accommodate the technical capacity of the Wii U hardware. By simply increasing the resolution without doing any tinkering with the lighting model, special effects or textures it doesnt look as good as it could and if anything makes the game look nice but slightly off as the assets were never designed to be displayed at such a high resolution.
@Dm9982 Thats a premature assessment. Its way too early in this gen to say the gaps small as we're in a transitional period of cross gen titles and developers still learning to use the new hardware and adjust their engines accordingly.
At the start of last gen people were saying the same thing you are now, that there isnt a big gap between PS3 and PS4 but shortly afterwards it became quite apparent that just wasnt true when developers got to grips with the new hardware.
Similarly, the gap between current gen and last gen will begin to widen as the gen progresses. Its like at the start of each gen everyone consistently forgets the lessons learned and the precedence set in previous generations.
Im thinking people are getting confused between rumours regarding the Switch revision and rumours about the Switch follow up. Im expecting a Switch revision this year with a 720p OLED and a version of Tegra X1 on a more advanced process node so maybe 7nm (down from 16nm.) This would allow them to use higher clock speeds on the CPU and GPU allowing for higher framerates and resolutions. Nothing dramatic though.
The talk of 4K and DLSS im thinking is for the Switch 2. That is the major upgrade where theres leaks that in handheld mode it'll be slightly above a base PS4 in raw power, just with a better CPU and more advanced graphics chip.
Its on 80 million now so itll outsell the Wii after this Xmas and then the PS4 by Xmas 2022 making it the 3rd best selling dedicated videogame hardware of all time. 2023 would be a good time for its follow up. With 3 more years of strong 1st party support, a meaningful price cut and no follow up till 2024 however, it stands a chance of reaching DS levels.
@Joker13z Its their opinion and they broke down why they weren't fully taken by the artistic direction in the review. So your reaction just seems weird. If you disagree and find the art style to your taste then thats cool. Live and let live.
Definite purchases for me: Skyward Sword, Legend of Mana, Monster Hunter Rise, Splatoon 3, Miitopia and No More Heroes 3
Games i'll get around to buying eventually: Saga Frontier, Ninja Gaiden Master Collection, Ghosts n Goblins, Bravely Default 2 and Project Triangle Strategy (because its strategy and not just a turn based RPG)
Bayonetta 3, No More Heroes 3, Zelda remasters and Metroid Prime Trilogy remaster with HD textures and updated lighting and special effects. More Monster Hunter info and new Smash Bros characters. That would be epic. Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4 will be 2022s heavy hitters id bet.
With the Switch being on 80 million sold and the Wii being on like 101, outselling Wii is not a hard milestone, (itll do so by January 2022) and the PS4 by Jan 2023 latest
Combining Wii and DS MK sales isnt the same thing as the two titles were different games, unlike the Switch and Wii U iterations. So its a nonsensical suggestion.
@NathanTheAsian Im well aware 2023 is 6 years. I was making the point that "even" the enormously successful DS topped out at 7years thus highlighting how your proposed 2025 for a successor verges on ludicrous. Nintendo does attempt to chart its own path, however its naive to believe that it operates within its own bubble. It is still subject to market forces. So whilst Nintendo doesn't market itself as a direct competitor to Sony and MS, there is major crossover in audience and said audience does not have unlimited financial resources for recreation. Some people have to make choices between one of the 3 major consoles. Wii U ports arent going to carry the Switch to an unprecedented 8 year lifespan. Thats ridiculous. My prediction is that in 2022 the rumour mill will begin, specs will leak and then in 2023 we'll get a true successor. By then Switch will have outsold the Wii, PS1 and PS4 and had a commendable 6 year run. Lets see what happens
@NathanTheAsian What Nintendo would prefer and what the market dictates are two separate things. Bear that in mind. Even the enormously successful DS topped out at 7 yrs. Same for PS4. Nintendo cant keep a console afloat on their games alone. GC and Wii U showed that. Plus Switch is getting minute amounts of major 3rd party exclusives but instead just ports. With the new gen having just arrived bringing even more powerful competing hardware said major ports will reduce in number as theyll become harder to do justice. We'll get a new Nintendo hybrid in 2023.
Given those figures are 2 weeks old, the Switch is probably on around 78 million right now. It'll outsell the Gameboy Advance and PSP by the end of this March latest, by June/July it'll have outsold the 360 (84 mill) and by Xmas 2021 latest it'll have outsold the PS3 and be within 5 mill of the Wii which it'll surpass by March 2022 latest. Xmas 2022 will see it pass the PS4 and the by March 2023 it'll have surpassed the original Gameboy and that'll leave it as the 3rd best selling dedicated gaming machine of all time.

Re: In Just Two Days New Pokรฉmon Snap Became April's Best-Seller In UK Retail
@Mr-Fuggles777 Without being a developer we cant really make those kind of assumptions. The fact that its on rails has already been taken advantage of in other areas of the graphical make up through far better image quality and geometry than any other Pokemon game before it. But things such as fur shaders sap bandwith and as i mentioned previously theres precedence for such effects to be left out of Switch titles as we are dealing with whats effectively mobile hardware.
Re: In Just Two Days New Pokรฉmon Snap Became April's Best-Seller In UK Retail
@Mr-Fuggles777 The Switch GPU is very bandwidth limited so something like fur effects could effect the framerate given the good level of detail in other aspects of the games graphical makeup. Its one of the reasons the Donkey Kong character model in Smash Bros Ultimate lost the fur shader the Wii U one had.
Re: Mario Kart 8 Becomes The "Best-Selling" Racing Game In US History
@Snatcher Ok course they will, just not for the current Switch which is good as id prefer a MK9 on the Switchs successor wth improved visuals, physics, A.I and track complexity all things that require more capable hardware. Any release on the current Switch wouldnt be distinct enough from MK8D making it pointless.
Id rather the Mario Kart team focus resources on making MK9 as good as it can be instead of splitting time and manpower on DLC for a launch window game.
Re: Soapbox: Hurry Up And Release The Switch Pro Already, My Switch Is Dying
Re: Review: Balan Wonderworld - A Charmless, Confusing Fossil From The Creators Of Sonic
@Strictlystyles Support him by withholding your money thereby encouraging him to make great games, not by buying his duds. What's the incentive for him to do better if you incentivize his mediocrity?
Re: A New Pokรฉmon Sword And Shield Item Distribution Has Begun - One Week Only
@TheLightSpirit Its free. Why the negativity? Id rather type in a code than spend an extended period farming for the same items lol
Re: Video: This Is What Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Looks Like Running At 8K With Ray Tracing Enabled
Re: Video: This Is What Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Looks Like Running At 8K With Ray Tracing Enabled
Re: Video: This Is What Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Looks Like Running At 8K With Ray Tracing Enabled
Patience
Re: Rumour: Nvidia Is Stopping Production Of Switch's Most Important Hardware This Year
Im thinking people are getting confused between rumours regarding the Switch revision and rumours about the Switch follow up.
Re: Rumour: Nvidia Is Stopping Production Of Switch's Most Important Hardware This Year
@Twilite9 Super Switch should be reserved for a Switch 2. This is just a Switch hardware revision
Re: Feature: The 10 Best SNES RPGs
@Sirloto FF6 is on the list. It was called FF3 in the UK
Re: Anniversary: Nintendo Switch Launched Four Years Ago Today
Its on 80 million now so itll outsell the Wii after this Xmas and then the PS4 by Xmas 2022 making it the 3rd best selling dedicated videogame hardware of all time. 2023 would be a good time for its follow up. With 3 more years of strong 1st party support, a meaningful price cut and no follow up till 2024 however, it stands a chance of reaching DS levels.
Re: Review: Bravely Default II - An Excellent Old-School JRPG That's Happy To Play It Safe
@Joker13z Its their opinion and they broke down why they weren't fully taken by the artistic direction in the review. So your reaction just seems weird. If you disagree and find the art style to your taste then thats cool. Live and let live.
Re: New Nintendo Infographic Shows Off The 30+ Games Announced During This Week's Direct
Re: Nintendo Direct To Air Tomorrow, Wednesday 17th February
Bayonetta 3, No More Heroes 3, Zelda remasters and Metroid Prime Trilogy remaster with HD textures and updated lighting and special effects. More Monster Hunter info and new Smash Bros characters. That would be epic. Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4 will be 2022s heavy hitters id bet.
Re: Nintendo Is "Rigorously Responding" To Demand For Multiple Switch Consoles Per Household
With the Switch being on 80 million sold and the Wii being on like 101, outselling Wii is not a hard milestone, (itll do so by January 2022) and the PS4 by Jan 2023 latest
Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Frame Rate And Resolution Detailed
@sixrings We dont. We just need more exclusive Switch games over the next couple years followed by a Switch successor (not a pro model) in 2023.
Re: Mario Kart 8 Overtakes Mario Kart Wii As Best-Selling Series Entry
Combining Wii and DS MK sales isnt the same thing as the two titles were different games, unlike the Switch and Wii U iterations. So its a nonsensical suggestion.
Re: A 'Pro' Switch With More Power Might Not Even Be Fully Utilised, Says Industry Veteran
Re: A 'Pro' Switch With More Power Might Not Even Be Fully Utilised, Says Industry Veteran
Re: A 'Pro' Switch With More Power Might Not Even Be Fully Utilised, Says Industry Veteran
Forget a Switch Pro. Nintendo just need to release a Switch 2 in 2023
Re: The Switch Has Now Sold More Units Than The 3DS
