The Nintendo Switch OLED model is just weeks away from its official launch – the big day's 8th October, if you were wondering – and the very first unboxing video for the system is now live.
The super-popular Japanese YouTuber HikakinTV has been given the honours, not only unboxing the system for our viewing pleasure but also showing off some 'over-the-shoulder' gameplay. We get to see the likes of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 2 running on the system, although it's worth noting that seeing the new OLED screen in the flesh will be a very different experience to viewing it on video.

Take a look here:
The Switch OLED has been spotted in the wild a couple of times now as we get ever closer to its launch next month. If you're wanting to get your hands on one, plenty of pre-order options are available.
Are you planning on buying a Switch OLED? Do you like the look of it in this new unboxing video? Let us know in the comments.

I see no reason to upgrade from my V2.
Give me the Switch successor in 2024, Nintendo.
I can’t wait to get mine!
Looks really good and I want one but I’m a 90% docked player and love playing on the big screen
Looking forward to getting it. I have a 4 year old v1, done me well and still in great condition. Be nice having the larger screen, but also I believe i should get much better battery life as it uses the newer Tegra which is a great plus for me too
Regardless of me not being able to understand what he is saying his channel seems pretty entertaining. I'll just have to wait until mine arrives to check it out for myself.
@Magician I see no reason to upgrade from my V2.
Screen bigger good and more memory good but GPU performance No. They could've done a GPU upgrade if they really wanted to. I think considering Nvidia needs their business they would've been able to work something out.
Hopefully I can get one this Holiday.
I have v2 i have lite but i want oled
Dunno why i just know i will be super happy playing oled switch
i still have an original v1 model and have had it since 2017. needless to say, i look forward to getting this! i am a mainly handheld player, after all.
I have my v1 model from December 2017. It is still in perfect working condition. No reason to buy this. The money for this could be spent on a PS5 or more games.
Got the original V1 on launch day, it’s still in perfect condition so I see absolutely no need to upgrade. All these people who say my ‘Switch is on its last legs’ what the hell are you doing with them?!
@ozwally This is the only reasoning I have too, but every time I see it available, I decide not to 🙃
Wow. I'm looking forward to getting mine in my hands now.
this is the most japanese thing I've seen in a minute
@Magician I see the upgrade as completely optional on whether you would find it worth paying extra for a little more 'premium' handheld experience. If I was more of a docked player I would see no reason get one of these.
Personally, even as a handheld player I think the OLED makes more sense than the Switch Lite.
It looks like what was on the outside of the box was inside of the box. Well done, Internet
Looking forward to mine, already preordered. Sure would have liked a performance boost but the better battery life and better screen are enough for me. I mainly play at home but even then I use it portably a fair amount.
You’d be surprised how much bonus points I get for playing portably in bed next to the wife than scurrying away into the Den to play on the tv. This will mean I don’t have to keep my eye on the battery % so much.
I love the minimalist, decorative shelving behind him!
Japanese YouTubers are great!
Old Switch on my OLED TV looks better and bigger.
@1UP_MARIO Same, though with the nicer screen I would be tempted to play handheld mode more often.
That does pop, color wise and I love the kickstand redesign.
@SwitchForce This is just conjecture, but i think we were gonna get a switch pro, and chip shortages limited that, but nintendo could still get better screens, so instead of a pro, we got the OLED, due to supply chains. Switch 2 will be the switch pro like device we wanted
Every reason to upgrade is in this video. I mean I can’t understand anything he says but my eyes work… wow is that screen an improvement.
So annoying YouTubers can be found in different languages then? The thumbnail immediately put me off; won't be long before passports insist on "reaction shot" portraits.
@Pikman yeah its alot to spend. A thought at the back of my mind too is my switch is 4 years old, how much longer is that battery going to last? I figured take the plunge when OLED was announced
It looks great! But I just can't justify 'upgrading' to this when it'd make zero difference to me about 90% of the time.
I'm still rocking the V1 Switch and as I also have Joy con drift on most of my joycon's I have pre ordered the OLED model. the slightly bigger screen will be great as I play 90% portable and also from owning a PSVIta that had a OLED display the difference in the blacks and colour is also something I am looking forward to experiencing with all my Switch games.
Worth watching the unboxing just for this guy doing the review
It really should just be the standard switch model. This is such a pathetically small upgrade, it really doesn't make sense to have both.
Those white Joy-Con look so nice; I really hope they sell them separately.
Thank you Japanese Austin Powers. This was quite whacky and informative.
Colours are a lot more vivid, impressive screen
Getting this...because I promised my brother-in-law I would sell my current switch to him and now I can't back out
Anyone who review the OLED model and not do a comparison between that and the base model is eventually a useless review. We all know the OLED is just like the base with everything the same except for the screen size and quality so focus only on that.
i have two cute pokemon on my switch dock who cares about the screen. its like OLED screen wooooooooooooooooooo. yeah my ps vita had that. since then got married had two kids emigrated learned another language my kids both in swiss schools. and speak 3 languages. well done nintendo
@Magician I thought the idea was to support Nintendo with the oled to get Nintendo to 2024 to make that predicted console upgrade for you. When global raw materials become available again, won't oled fundraising help the harvest for it? Such a worthy niche Nintendo has paved outside the pull of playstation and xbox - get the oled anyway to keep it that way!
I'm still on my ver. 1 Switch from February 2018 and it is going strong. I haven't noticed a reduction in battery life and I'm mostly a docked player anyways. As much as I like shiny new tech, the OLED will probably be a pass. Waiting for better docked performance.
I do really want one of these, still using my day one switch. The stand falls off now constantly.
But I haven't yet pulled the trigger on a PS5 or Xbox X yet so I will probably get one of those first before I upgrade my switch.
Cannot wait for mine!!! My highly used day 1 model is very tired and I recently ran out of space on my SD. The extra 32GB will actually be super useful. And I'm a huge handheld player that wished from day 1 that the kickstand was better. Never seen an OLED display in person so I'm pumped for Dread to melt my face off on it.
His reaction to the screen quality is what I imagine mine is going to be like once I get mine. I love me an OLED screen, and I imagine it's going to be much improved over the current one, which isn't bad to me, also considering the price of the device.
What a nutter. I love it! I didn’t understand a word, but his enthusiasm and energy is awesome. I think he kinda likes the new OLED model.
BOOOOOM BOOOOOM!
I play mostly docked on my switch (v1) but im STILL upgrading to OLED. It's preordered. So excited. I can just sell my current switch, so the new OLED will only cost me $150 or so. OR I'll just sell my OLED when it comes in for whatever scalpers are selling em for, and repurchase it when they become available.
@SwitchForce Maybe Nvidia didn't deliver?
@SwitchForce A GPU upgrade wouldve taken the shine away from the Switchs successor. Youve gotta remember mobile gpu performance is limited by battery tech, so the leaps in that area are smaller compared to the desktop gpu space. For example Switch on release lay in between Wii U and Xbox One in performance. A whole 4 and a half years later and Steam Decks releasing next month with only PS4 level performance just with a more modern architecture.
So if the Switch OLED had a GPU bump then the Switch 2 would def seem a lot less exciting.
Plus the Switchs momentum is solid enough to carry on selling decently for 2 years so there was no point.
Switch 2 in 2023 hopefully
You gotta remember valve and Dell Portable had GPU upgrade as well. So not sure why someone would make light of not being able to have a GPU upgrade would remove the shine away from the Switch. A GPU upgrade with New OLED would improve the sales on the Switch. They can still have a v2 Switch with OLED/GPU upgraded Switch or OLED v2 hardware with another model OLED upgraded GPU so there would be two models to choose from. The longer Switch waits the more Portable units come to market waiting doesn't improve your market shares. Gaming console waiting isn't your best friend here. People are already clamoring for Switch to improve GPU or 4K/DLSS options and to miss out on this is folly in itself. If you want 4k/DLSS options they need to bring big guns out sooner then later. Then can have two model
1. Switch OLED
2. Switch GPU upgraded OLED
Nothing wrong with having two models to choose from. Computer do that every 6 months now with the amount of Chipset improvements and upgrade.
It is insane how much that extra screen coverage makes. Like going from a 40in to a 50in television.
I play mostly handheld, unless I'm playing MHRise. And even then, once I get my hands on an OLED Switch + Split Pad Pro, I will be playing Rise mostly handheld regardless. I enjoy kicking back in TV Mode once in a while, but I am a handheld player through and through. Essentially the Switch XL model is a no-brainer for me. That is, if I can get my hands on one this year.
I'm so glad we have the internet to make us realize what we have in common instead of our differences. For example, Youtubers are insufferably obnoxious no matter what country and culture they call home. In this video, I can't even tell if this is Japanese, or American. The only culture here is Youtuber.
@NEStalgia,
You sound just as cynical about Youtuber's as I do.
As nice as the OLED Switch looks, I'm passing on this, at least for now anyways, maybe I'll pick one up next year. I have two boys and Christmas is around the corner, so whatever extra money I have (outside of three games, I'm for sure still buying this year), is going towards them.
Gone from not wanting one to wanting one. Still rocking a day 1 switch and as of late ive been playing alot more in handheld. The battery life sucks and my left joy con drift is really starting to p**s me off despite following all the "fixes" on youtube. May look in to one after christmas if they become readily available by then. I play on an oled TV so i already know the step up in screen quality.
@johnvboy Lol, I knew I'd get you to the cynical side eventually!
I’m a handheld player all the way but my hacked V1 will remain my daily driver thanks. The Steamdeck really took the wind out of the OLED’s sails I must say. Especially the price point for the few enhancements which aren’t really justified in my opinion.
The screen is gorgeous, but yeah. A friendlier price would make the upgraded screen far more appetising.
Nothing but improvements. Nice.
@Magician Think the same but I still want to try it to see if I feel any real difference, I play hand held most of the time…. But would also like a pro edition instead (and who wouldn’t ofc)
Looks really nice but I am ok with the original switch. I'll save the money for software and the eventual 2023/24 successor!
I hope the brightness there is set to medium, cause I'm expecting much more vibrant colours and contrast when I get it.
The other thing I'm thinking is refresh rate, I wonder if it is better on an OLED.
