As you may have noticed, today marks 20 years since the Nintendo GameCube launched in Japan and we (along with the rest of the internet) have been getting all nostalgic for Nintendo's purple box.
As is customary on these significant anniversaries (or any anniversary when it comes to social media — gotta mark those 17th and 36th birthdays, too), the Twitterverse and Facebookverse and other variously dystopian ‘verses have been quite rightly celebrating, with Gamecube trending in gamers' thoughts in a way Nintendo wishes it might have two decades back.
With everyone sharing their favourite GameCube games and memories, one Phil Spencer, head of Xbox over at Microsoft, revealed his favourite GameCube game ever on Twitter. No, it's not Mario, it's not Pikmin, it's not F-Zero — it's not even Billy Hatcher. It's...
Yep, it's Silicon Knights' psychological horror Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, a game that remains GameCube-exclusive to this day and one that sits at number 12 on our reader-ranked Top 50 GameCube game list at the time of writing. It's a classic horror title filled with Lovecraftian-style lore and Old God gore, and perhaps most fondly remembered for its superbly effective 'sanity effects', where the game would break the fourth wall to mess with the player's mind.
Is this a sign? Does this mean Phil is working with Nintendo to bring the series back in some form? Is Microsoft buying Nintendo?!?!...
Er, no, no, and no. Check your sanity meter, please.
Anyhow, nice one, Phil — that is a quality video game released for the Nintendo GameCube, and we approve of your fine taste, sir.
Feel free to let us know below which GameCube game you think Jim Ryan would call his favourite. We're going to say it's probably... oh, a FIFA or something.

Because of course it is.
Now port it, Nintendo.
This is a gamer.
Now if Nintendo just cared a bit more about this IP...
I'd love to see a remake from the ground, not a simple remaster. Anyone remeber the simulation of save corruption? What if they simulated a Joy-con drift? You won't know if you have drift or bot! That's a game messung with your reality
@RCGamer it'll be a 50% chance it's actually drift lol
Yes! He has gone up in my estimation
Loved this game too, and it’s in my top 5 GameCube games of all time alongside Phantasy Star Online Ep1&2, Zelda, Metal Gear, and Resident Evil 4. I REALLY wish they’d at least port it to Switch, if not remake/remaster. God I miss this game. Also miss PSO1&2 dearly too, another title I wish was brought forward….
Jim Ryan’s favourite GameCube game is Pokemon Box.
I bought Eternal Darkness back in the day, and was super hyped for it. However, I found it not all that great. It had some cool, original ideas for sure, but I never had a desire to replay it once I finished.
I guess if presentation and creativity is what you care about it, it's cool, but the gameplay itself was meh.
I've never played this. My top games would be Prime 1 and 2, Mario Sunshine, Thousand Year Door, Melee, Double Dash, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess
Yeah a game to remember. Gameplay / controls was a bit shid tho. The story and atmopshere was spot on!
Right on, never played but sound design in that game from what I read was amazing. Mine are listed below.
Prime 1 and 2. Windwaker. Thousand year door. Killer 7. RE4.
Still waiting on a remaster or remake.
I love Phil Spencer, and I've never owned an Xbox. His strategy has singlehandedly changed the medium. Xbox is now and forever will be backwards and forwards compatible. With game pass over the cloud, you can even play X|S exclusive titles on an Xbox One. It's an egalitarian approach. No matter what you own or where you are, you can play Xbox. The others are falling behind rapidly. Only Sony's fandom and exclusives will keep it alive, but not forever, unless they adapt quickly. PS Now has to catch up in streaming quality. Though they're finally offering 1080p, it doesn't even run well enough to support 720p. And it doesn't have mobile support yet. And they probably need to include their exclusives like Xbox is. Sony has a totally different business model, but I think they're being very quickly outpaced and out-innovated by Microsoft.
@RCGamer lol this is genius
@Gryffin Phil is great for gaming.
@sketchturner Same, I bought it a few years ago as it’s a cult classic but found it a bit clunky. Maybe I should give it another try
They were going to port Eternal Darkness to the Switch and make the Joy-cons drift as part of the sanity effect but....
Jim Ryan is really into Okami and stuff like that. So probably Viewtiful Joe for him
Top tier.
It easily sits next to Melee, Wind Waker, Sunshine, Pikmin, Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX, The Thousand Year Door, Resident Evil 4, and Rogue Leader in my top ten GCN games.
Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness and Resident Evil Remake 😁
@nessisonett I thought Jim Ryan's favorite game GCN game was Wario World? He cosplays it and everything!
Argh, long ago I finished it like 3 times to see all different endings, but gave up on my last playthrough toward what seemed to be the ultimate secret ending! Now when I boot it I don't even remember how to play the game at all! But gosh what a great game it was.. Maybe I'll get back to it someday!
My favorite GC game is Interactive Multi-Game Demo Disc Version 18. That's the one that comes with a full ROM of Mario Pinball Land for GBA.
It's not a bad choice at all! I really liked Eternal Darkness. If I remember correctly, you could play it three times in different ways.
My favourite GameCube games must be Wave Race Blue Storm, Resident Evil and Twilight Princess (Twilight Princess HD is much better, though). Super Mario Sunshine is my favourite Mario 3D game. The Thousand-year Door is my favourite Paper Mario game (I think that everybody agrees about it). My favourite Mario Kart is Double Dash because of the physics and gameplay. Pikmin and Metroid Prime are also awesome. SNES, N64 and GameCube have the best Nintendo games.
@Gryffin You are right.
Must admit, Phil has taste, Eternal Darkness was the best early Gamecube game after Rogue Squadron 2.Still one of my favourites, it had so many memorable "insanity" moments, shouted at my T.V when it said it was deleting my memory card lmao.
@NEStalgia Maybe his favorite game is the BIOS screen. Who'd want to put in games so old at all?
@FargusPelagius LOL Those moments were epic.
@RCGamer "What if they simulated a Joy-con drift? You won't know if you have drift or bot! That's a game messung with your reality"
Then Nintendo would get back double the ammount of warranties with half not even having an issue in the first place..... Now that really would mess with your mind 😂😂😂
@KiraMoonvalley Star Fox Adventures is amazing, too. I forgot that.
Yes. Same here.
Game was and remains amazing. I still play it on dolphin because Nintendo hates 90% of their own history
I pick the exact same game.
Boy would I love to see a remake of that game in modern times. And 1000% would I love to see it in virtual reality.
You have no idea how cool that would be!
Even just playing it again recently running on the Dolphin emulator that allowed me to play it in stereoscopic 3D projected onto a large virtual cinema screen was honestly amazing still.
Eternal Darkness + VR could be something very special.
I never have been the least bit interested in playing it. The only GameCube games I find are must-play games are: Super Smash Bros. Melee, PN03, Geist, & Time Splitters: Future Perfect.
They had a kickstarter for a sequel twice and nobody cared. "Shadow of the Eternals, the proposed spiritual successor to 2002's Eternal Darkness, fell well short of its Kickstarter funding goal for a second time. Despite a more modest target of $750,000, the project attracted less than half that amount, or $323,950."
and one of the main devs is in jail for kiddie fiddling I believe
They even made a mini demo of the sequel

The NGC had such great unique games. I loved Eternal Darkness and can't wait to replay it.
Another really underrated title is Baiten Katos.
Eternal Darkness is so enthralling when you play it the first time, knowing little about it. I would love for Nintendo to make a deal so some games could be released at 120fps on XSX.
For me Eternal Darkness will forever live in my heart having played it back in the day but then had to regrettably sell it because I was skint. I recently replayed it during lockdown with my Carby and mClassic which by the way make it look sweet and I’ve got to say the game is still great. Controls are old school of course but the story, music, atmosphere and characters are all great. Only complaint is the lead up to the end is a bit weak and feels rushed. But anyway still a 9/10 from me. Love it. Now remaster it Nintendo!!
Ok. This guy gets massive brownie points from me based on this answer.
I never got to the point of a third playthrough to see what would happen to Mantorok once the balance of the ancients was completely broken. Always got the feeling that a surprise was in store for those who would.
Darkness or "Shadow" does make sense in the "X BOX"
One of my favorite games too! Wish we could get a remastered version
