You have twice now accused me of being argumentative, while continue to argue with me in your replies. If you want to argue, that's fine, but stop projecting being argumentative onto me.
With that said, as per my previous post, I'm not interested in arguing. This is a comment thread on a news article that's two days old now; it's time for me to move on.
I am however genuinely interested in your reasoning as to why Splatoon 3 looks to be way better than Splatoon 2. Please feel free to share if you'd like.
I actually don’t want to argue. For someone who’s “not down for” arguing, you sure said a lot to argue against my position.
I’ve stated my point clearly and concisely across multiple posts. You obviously disagree and that’s ok. If you truly don’t want to argue, I’d suggest we leave it at that.
I’m also disappointed you didn’t answer my Splatoon 3 question.
Nintendo lacks a GOTY contender so they’re not blowing away the competition to the point where it’s not even close. That’s it, that’s my point.
If you misunderstood my earlier posts, maybe I worded it poorly or maybe you just didn’t get it. Either way, respectfully, I have no interest in going back and reviewing my old posts; I’m looking to move forward.
Yes, precious GOTY winners have had their reputations diminish over the years. I don’t think Elden Ring will be one of them. I think Elden Ring will be looked upon as an all-time great years from now. I could be wrong, we’ll just have to wait and see.
You can list as many Nintendo exclusive games as you like. It doesn’t change my point that Nintendo’s not blowing their competition away to the point where it isn’t even close when they’re not in the GOTY conversation. And no, I don’t consider Splatoon 3 or Xenoblade 3 to be likely GOTY contenders.
As an aside, what makes you think Splatoon 3 looks way better than Splatoon 2? I’ve put hundreds of hours into Splatoon 1 & 2 and Splatoon 3 just looks like “more Splatoon” to me. I’m definitely going to get it and play it for 300+ hours, but I haven’t seen anything yet that screams massive upgrade over Splatoon 2. Curious to hear your rationale.
Thanks for the offer, but I’m not interested in having a discussion on Elden Ring’s flaws. I think you’ve misunderstood me as this giant Elden Ring booster who thinks it’s the best thing ever. I’ve never said anything of the sort.
All I did was respond to someone who said that Nintendo was destroying the competition and it wasn’t even close. I strongly disagreed with that statement, as Nintendo doesn’t have Elden Ring, which is the likely game of the year.
I am not saying Elden Ring is the best thing ever or even my favourite game this year. I am just saying it is likely the game of the year and it alone means Nintendo isn’t blowing the competition away without it being close. Note that I never said Nintendo didn’t have the best lineup for 2022 even.
Some of my comments were misunderstood and certain things were ascribed to me (like “console warring”, after I denounced console wars previously in this thread, lol). Things got a bit out of hand and some insults were thrown my way too. At the end of the day that’s all I was trying to say.
I appreciate your comment though!
Regarding Elden Ring being a generation defining game like Skyrim and Breath of the Wild (and Dark Souls too) I disagree with you there. I do think Elden Ring will have that sort of impact. Again, not saying it’s my favourite, just calling it like I see it.
For what it’s worth, I don’t like Skyrim all that much, but I totally acknowledge and respect its impact on the industry. I try to be as objective as possible when it comes to this sort of thing.
Time will tell which one of us is correct I suppose.
I'm surprised to see your reply. You kept telling me you were "done".
I only said I liked Elden Ring more than Kirby. Not sure why this is so upsetting to you. I never said Elden Ring is my personal favourite game this year. My personal feelings about Elden Ring are irrelevant to the point I'm making. I said it's the consensus Game of the Year at the moment, a point which you agreed with. Not sure why you couldn't just leave it at that.
I've also consistently respected the opinions of others in this comment thread. Not once have I told anyone who dislikes Elden Ring that they're wrong.
I'm replying to the comments made in this comment thread, so there's so need for me to seek out some other "Elden Ring" thread. Didn't realize only comments that said "I agree Nintendo is killing it" are allowed by you here.
At the end of the day, someone said Nintendo is blowing the competition away and that it's not close. I responded that this isn't the case, as Nintendo lacks a GotY contender (you can't be "blown away" if you've got the best game of the year). Not sure why you have such a huge problem with this.
You first said you were "done" after insulting me which was rude and uncalled for. I had every right to reply to that.
And if you were indeed "done", why did do you feel the need to try and get the last word in?
And your closing argument is that Nintendo is killing it because lots of people agree and my opinion is irrelevant? After you argued the exact opposite position with Elden Ring? At least I remained consistent with my message, as opposed to doing a complete 180 as you seem to have done.
I don't expect a reply to this of course. After all, you're "done".
There's no childish console warring whatsoever on my part. The childish one here is you, who's resorting to ad hominem attacks. You're also ascribing intentions to my post and telling me I'm "console warring" when I'm explicitly telling you the opposite. Very sad that you feel the need to result to personal attacks.
It's also laughable that you're accusing me of being unreasonable and unable to participate in a civil discussion when you open your post by insulting me.
Yes, I did bring Elden Ring into this discussion, but not as some deranged anti-Nintendo campaign, anti-Bayonetta plot. If you'd bothered to read my post history, you'd see that I brought up Elden Ring in response to another poster who claimed that:
"Nintendo stomped the competition this year. It wasn't even close."
That's the original statement I replied to and yet I'm the one you think is a childish console war guy? Get real.
All I did was reasonably point out that Nintendo isn't blowing the competition away as they are unlikely to be in the game of the year discussion this year, as Elden Ring has it on lock. This is a fact that YOU AGREE WITH. And somehow that makes me some anti-Nintendo console war fanboy? Give me a break.
For someone who finds these discussions "utterly pointless" you sure do have a lot to say.
Sorry to say, that some games are objectively better than others. Someone might prefer, say, Shaq Fu to Street Fighter II but only a fool would argue against Street Fighter II being the better game objectively.
Having the humility to put your personal opinions aside and accept that popularity is usually a measure of quality is ultimately a good thing. For example, I have zero interest in Minecraft, but I can fully accept that it must be a fantastic game; otherwise it wouldn't have achieved the record-breaking success it did.
So yes, both your opinion and my opinion only matter a little when it comes to what's game of the year. Sounds like both you and I agree that Elden Ring is a lock for game of the year, so what's the point in arguing?
Thanks for sharing your personal opinions on games, but they honestly add nothing to the discussion at hand. I can put my personal opinions aside when having GotY discussions; sad that you cannot.
The fact is, Elden Ring is a game that will almost certainly be widely remembered and discussed for years to come, like most "game of the year" games. Nintendo just doesn't have any games like that on the Switch this year.
Lastly, you say that touting Elden Ring as the presumptive GotY is "silly console warring"? What an absurd statement! Elden Ring is a multiplatform game that is on literally everything but Switch. Xbox, Playstation and PC players can all play Elden Ring. When the Switch Pro or Switch 2 or whatever comes out, I fully expect Elden Ring to be on it. It wouldn't shock me to see an Elden Ring port to the original Switch in a year to two frankly.
Elden Ring is not an exclusive game and discussing its success and impact has nothing to do with console wars.
LOL. Only on Nintendo Life could there be such a debate!
Personally, I can totally understand why one person would prefer Kirby over Elden Ring or vice versa.
Putting our personal opinions aside though, I think any reasonable person would agree that Elden Ring is the front runner for Game of the Year 2022 and that Kirby (as great as it is) is not a serious contender.
I'm a PS5 owner. Why would Bayo 3 getting a release date make me feel sick?
Bayo 3 will be a great experience for me before I play GoW Ragnarok. Plus I'll be playing Resident Evil 4 Remake, Street Fighter 6, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 and Final Fantasy 16 on my PS5 next year. Lots to look forward to.
It's not 1994 anymore. Leave this silly console wars stuff in the past where it belongs and let people enjoy games for whatever platform or platforms they own.
Sorry Elden Ring wasn't your cup of tea. I personally loved Kirby as well, though it hasn't captured me the way Elden Ring has.
Putting our personal opinions aside though, surely you agree that Elden Ring is almost certainly going to sweep the Game of the Year awards this year. Nintendo just doesn't have a "big" game o the same level as Elden Ring this year.
They really haven't. Elden Ring captured the broader gaming community in a way that no other Nintendo game this year has come close to. Heck, you'd have to go back to 2017 with Breath of the Wild (and maaaaaybe Super Mario Odyssey) to see a Nintendo game that had the kind of impact Elden Ring had.
Elden Ring is pretty much a lock for Game of the Year 2022 and no Nintendo game this year will be a serious contender.
It's cool if Elden Ring isn't for you (no game is for everyone), but looking at things objectively, Nintendo doesn't have any games on the same level as Elden Ring this year.
I was referring to the characters from the Devil May Cry games. I’m embarrassed to admit, I never made the connection to Dante’s Inferno until you pointed it out. Looks like I need to read more and game less!
It’s possible that they’re going back to 2020 style announcements with partner directs and random announcements for first party titles (e.g. Paper Mario).
With that said, my money is on there being a September Direct, where Bayo 3 will get a release date.
We need more 20ish hour RPGs! Too many RPGs are major time commitments which a lot of people just don’t have time for. For example, Persona 5 Royal is incredible, but it’s also like 120 hours. A lot of people just aren’t up for games of that length. 20 hours feels much more manageable though.
My best guess is that thinkhector is referring to the Sonic Origins collection. Kind of weird to bring up a Sonic collection as an argument for why a Cosmic Fantasy/Valis collection might be better than a TMNT collection, but here we are.
PS - Sonic Origins collection has a ton of issues too.
They could actually do the same thing they did with Wii U to the Switch and have it work out ok, provided that the Switch is still getting strong third party support.
In 2016, the Wii U got Twilight Princess HD, Star Fox, Pokken, Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Paper Mario with heavy hitters like Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey being held back for the Switch. The Wii U had a pretty weak 2016 first party lineup, but it would have been “good enough” if it had the amount of third party support the Wii U was getting in a typical year.
@DarkTron She works in the industry, she’s a lot more in the know than you and I. She didn’t t hear it from Nintendo directly, true, but she heard it from someone who she was clearly confident would be telling the truth / would know for sure.
Could she be wrong? Sure. But she has contacts in the industry and doesn’t have a reputation for spreading fake rumours.
Overall, considering that NintendoLife made it clear in the article that this is a rumour and unconfirmed, I really see no issue with them publishing this.
Those mini consoles are also all emulating less powerful hardware and were manufactured before a global chip shortage. SEGA themselves have said a DC mini would be too expensive; it’s in the interview we’re commenting on. Really not sure why you don’t believe them and think they’re “just making excuses”. They have access to much more info than you do on the topic.
“Streets of Rage had to substitute” for Mega Drive /Genesis owners? The Streets of Rage series was overall better than the Final Fight series and SoR 2 is the best game in either series by a considerable margin.
If you follow SEGA closely, you’ll see that they have a pattern of teasing Saturn and Dreamcast games as a possibility without actually delivering.
It happened when they launched the SEGA Forever mobile phone service and said Saturn and Dreamcast games were totally possible.
It happened again when the SEGA AGES line of games launched on Switch and they told us that Saturn and Dreamcast games might release as part of that line.
Personally, I wouldn’t hold my breath for a Mini Saturn or Dreamcast.
Mid life doesn’t mean that a successor can’t launch before the end of its life.
The mid life claim was in 2021; 4 years after the Switch launched. Suppose a Switch 2 launches next year and the Switch 1 still gets support until 2025. That would mean the Switch would have an 8 year life and the mid life claim would be true, even with the Switch 2 launching before the end of the Switch’s life.
Look at the 3DS for a recent example. The Switch launched in 2017 and the 3DS still got first party games until 2019. I can totally see the same thing happening with the Switch and the Switch 2.
We’ll see. Those are some good points worth considering , but there are a lot of signs pointing to the Switch successor coming out soon too.
2023 would be 6 years after the Switch launched. How many Nintendo systems went more than 6 years before the launch of their successor? Not many of them.
As for the Switch being at the mid point of its life, that doesn’t mean a successor isn’t on the way. For example, the 3DS stayed alive for a couple years after the Switch launched. The Switch 2 could launch next year and the Switch 1 could be kept alive until 2025 making the “mid point” claim true.
Bottom line is this though: you and I don’t work at Nintendo and we’re not insiders. Therefore, neither of us is in a position to say with 100% certainty whether the Switch 2 will launch next year. My money is on yes, but I fully admit I could be wrong. You should show a little humility and be open to the possibility that you are incorrect too (especially because you don’t actually know).
They’ll be a free upgrade to people who own the PS4 version, but they’ll also be a new paid SKU for people who don’t own a previous version of the game. So yeah, they count.
Are you familiar with publicly trading companies? Investors and shareholders want ever increasing sales and profits. Shareholders aren't satisfied with "sales that are a little lower than before, but still good". Regular people might be satisfied with this, but publicly traded companies are not. That's just how it is.
If sales are down, it makes perfect logical sense to think that Nintendo will launch a new console to sell as much as possible.
They’re decent strategy games, but are a totally different genre from the other R-Type games. No guarantees you’ll like them just because you liked Dimensions.
It’s got the best core gameplay of any version of MGS3, for sure. Performance wise, it has a terrible frame rate. It’s also missing a lot of extras that pretty much every other version of the game has.
It’s overall an interesting version of MGS3, with a lot going for it. However, it’s missing way too much and has too many technical issues to be called the best version.
It’s both an awful port and a great port. Adding the crouch walk and simplified CQC from later MGS titles makes the gameplay a lot smoother. So in some ways, it’s the best playing version of MGS3.
On the other hand, the frame rate is terrible and it’s missing the majority of the extras and bonuses found in pretty much every other release of MGS3, with the exception of the original, non-subsistence PS2 version.
Overall, I’d say it’s a fascinating port more than anything.

There is no normal with Nintendo!
In 2020, we got announcements like this with Paper Mario and Hyrule Warriors AoC. Plus we got a bunch of Nintendo Partner Showcase Mini Directs.
On the other hand, 2021 was a much more "normal" year with a full Nintendo Direct in February, June and September.
2022 has been a weird mix of 2020 and 2021 so far, with a February Direct and no full June Direct.
Going forward, who knows what we'll see? For what it's worth, I expect there will be an E3 Direct in 2023 with E3 returning next year.

Persona 5 Royal is already on PS4 at least, but yeah, looks like SEGA/Atlus and/or Sony want P3P and P4G to be PS5-only.
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Direct To Take Place Later This Month
@andyg1412 There’s a good chance Nintendo would charge full price for each of those games individually.
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Direct To Take Place Later This Month
@DarkTron She works in the industry, she’s a lot more in the know than you and I. She didn’t t hear it from Nintendo directly, true, but she heard it from someone who she was clearly confident would be telling the truth / would know for sure.
Could she be wrong? Sure. But she has contacts in the industry and doesn’t have a reputation for spreading fake rumours.
Overall, considering that NintendoLife made it clear in the article that this is a rumour and unconfirmed, I really see no issue with them publishing this.
Re: Feature: Sonic The Hedgehog Compilations - Every Sonic Collection Before Sonic Origins
No Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection?
Re: Sega Has Considered Dreamcast & Saturn Mini But Is Worried About Extreme Costs
@Serpenterror
Re: 30 Years On, The Fan-Made 'Final Fight Ultimate' Is Set To Reignite The 16-bit Console War
“Streets of Rage had to substitute” for Mega Drive
/Genesis owners? The Streets of Rage series was overall better than the Final Fight series and SoR 2 is the best game in either series by a considerable margin.
Re: Sega Has Considered Dreamcast & Saturn Mini But Is Worried About Extreme Costs
@Ryu_Niiyama
Re: Sega Has Considered Dreamcast & Saturn Mini But Is Worried About Extreme Costs
@Serpenterror
A low power PC costs more than $75 and that’s without controllers, licensing costs for third party games, etc.
DC emulation is totally doable but the whole point of a mini console is to be cheap. A lot of people wouldn’t buy a $250 mini for example.
Re: Sega Has Considered Dreamcast & Saturn Mini But Is Worried About Extreme Costs
@shonenjump86
NintendoLife buried the lead on this one. It sounds like this isn’t coming overseas since they’re “focusing on Japan”.

I was thinking the same thing! Does the whole soundtrack have obnoxious singing like this trailer does?

Huge snub to leave Capcom Fighting Collection off this list
Re: Talking Point: As Switch Hardware Sales Slow, How Long Can Nintendo Delay 'Switch 2'?
@SwitchForce
Re: Talking Point: As Switch Hardware Sales Slow, How Long Can Nintendo Delay 'Switch 2'?
@iLikeUrAttitude
Re: Capcom Releasing "Multiple Major New Titles" By March 31, 2023
@Angelic_Lapras_King
They’ll be a free upgrade to people who own the PS4 version, but they’ll also be a new paid SKU for people who don’t own a previous version of the game. So yeah, they count.
Re: Capcom Releasing "Multiple Major New Titles" By March 31, 2023
@Anti-Matter
Your wish has been granted; it’s part of next month’s Capcom Fighting Collection.
Re: Talking Point: As Switch Hardware Sales Slow, How Long Can Nintendo Delay 'Switch 2'?
@iLikeUrAttitude
Re: Granzella Announces Remakes Of R-Type Tactics I & II
@andyg1412
They’re decent strategy games, but are a totally different genre from the other R-Type games. No guarantees you’ll like them just because you liked Dimensions.
Re: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D Physical Prices Jump As eShop Closure Looms
@Edu23XWiiU
Re: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D Physical Prices Jump As eShop Closure Looms
@Whalehome That’s correct
Re: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D Physical Prices Jump As eShop Closure Looms
@AndyC_MK111
