One of the biggest surprises to come out of yesterday's Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase (which was much bigger than Mini in our eyes!) was Pac-Man World Re-PAC, a remake of the Pac-Man platformer Pac-Man World on PlayStation.
This spin-off launched a whole new sub-franchise for the yellow puck on his 20th anniversary back in 1999, and fans have been desperate to see the game make a return. And now it will be this August!
To celebrate the new trailer, the folks at GameXplain have done a side-by-side comparison of the Switch trailer alongside the original PlayStation game, and there are quite a few fun differences and improvements. For one, Pac-Man's home looks very different now, and you can see that Bandai Namco's issues with Ms. Pac-Man are still present with Pac-Mom and Pac-Sis making appearances instead.

The posters for Ghost Island are now much more detailed, and the levels themselves have so many extra touches with the new lick of paint. But otherwise, it's a surprisingly faithful remake and the comparison really just goes to show that the game looks pretty brilliant.
You can check out GameXplain's video below for a trip down memory lane as well as just to see how much things have changed in over 20 years.
If you missed yesterday's Partner Showcase, make sure you check out our round-up of everything that was announced during the presentation.

This gives me so much hope for a World 2 remake! One of my favorite 3D platformers of all time. I have so, so much nostalgia for it and would love to replay it again
Well consider me intrigued & piqued… This looks like it could be good! And good 3D platformers are hard to come by these days.
… Wun can only hope.
@StarPoint Dude if they Don't remake pac man world 2 I'll be so scuffed and dissapointed at namco after they just threw is this epic W
In some cases, I slightly prefer the original designs, and there's something nostalgic and cool about the super low poly models of well made PS1 games.
However in general, I really like the look of this new remake and its obvious they've put a lot of effort into it - I'm glad it still looks simple and stylised and they didn't weirdly make everything hyper realistic like some remakes or updates of modern franchises do.
I'm very much looking forward to replaying this. My only query is what the price point will be, given that both the Spyro and Crash remakes put 3 games on each cart for full price. I think $20 digital $30 physical would be fair. But I'll buy it regardless as I want them to make the second one too!
@samuelvictor : It seems to be launching at a lower than usual price point in Australia (AU$70), so, with that in mind, my guess is that it will be US$40 physical in the States.
Also, comparing the price point with Spyro isn't fair as Activision cheaped out on the cartridge, imposing a mandatory download for the "physical" release (but the Crash trilogy was complete on cartridge with no downloads/patches whatsoever).
What have they done to Ms. Pac-Man?
the in-game graphics look very good, but those CGIs (or FMVs) are definitely better in the original game...way better
@MidySeaCloud @StarPoint I forgot part 2 had the unlock-able Arcade (including Ms Pac-Man).
At least in the original Pac-Man's house actually look like a house. Anyways I didn't like the original ones anyways so I probably won't like this remake one either, them Pac-Man 3D games were never that enjoyable to me compare to the old 2D ones.
@Silly_G Ok, I can live with $40 physical. If its $60 I think that's asking too much. I didn't know that about Spyro - I played them on PC as my partner was streaming them. Its on my list of games to pick up on Switch at some point as I'd like to have it physically and Switch is my favourite system to collect for. I really hate it when physical releases don't have all the games on the cart, no excuse for it really... but I'll pick it up when I see it cheap second hand.
@RushDawg Licensing issues prevent Ms. Pac-Man from being put into games. You're seeing in this game a new character, Pac-Mom!
@RushDawg I believe thats "Pac-Mom". (or it could be "Pac-Marie" or "Pac-Man Girl"... all 3 have been used recently in games and media since the legal issues with At-Games over "Ms Pac-Man".)
It annoyed me when they went back and hacked the old arcade roms for teh recent collection of old games, but for this remakes, I've got to say, I don't mind the new designs (the baby is a new design/character too).
But in my head canon I have to pretend its still Ms Pac-Man with a new look, and she's decided to call herself a new name to go with her new image! I'm not keen on the idea of a Pac-Divorce or Pac-Bigamy!
@samuelvictor @JoeyTS : Pac-Mom also featured in Pac-Man Museum+, I believe. Could that have been Pac-Mom's "debut"?
It's disappointing though, given Ms. Pac-Man's historical significance. It makes no sense to me that another company is able to claim rights to it when it's evidently based on an existing property.
@Silly_G Yeah Pac-Mom made her debut in Museum+, particularly in Pac-Land and as one of those figurines you can obtain for your arcade! It's honestly just a really weird situation for Ms. Pac-Man
It’s cool they’re remaking the 1st game, I always wanted to play it. The 2nd was the 1st gamecube game I played when I got my gamecube last year, I hope they fix the lava world if they do remake world 2, I’ve yet to beat it cause of that awful level.
@JoeyTS @Silly_G Yes Museum+ is the first time I saw/heard that name. I don't really like it. Assuming they are all the same character, I quite liked the name "Pac-Marie" as it gave her a real name, which gave scope to expand her character and give her more of an identity and role to play in new games. Reducing her to "Mom" feels a bit like limiting her to just one role... not very modern lol.
@JoeyTS @Silly_G Well, there was that version of Pac-Land by Arcade Archives with "Pac-Mom" edited in which released about a month before Pac-Man Museum+.
@John_Koshiro Oh yeah that's true, I forgot about that!
...Did this ever show up on the GCN? Or was that another Pac-Man adventure game? I remember playing a game on that. If not then I guess this'll be new for me. lol
I remember playing Pac Man Maze Madness on PS1 but not this.
@Joeynator3000 Pac-Man World 2(it was packed with that split screen Pac game, I forget the name) and I believe 3 were on Gamecube.
@Silly_G It's up for preorder at $30 on Bestbuy.
@korosanbo It's $30 at Bestbuy so should be the same at Amazon.
Also it's maximum 2 units for Namco store, not minimum/
I find it funny that even though Ms. Pac-Man is not in te game anymore, they're still using an arrangement of the Act 1 Intermission theme from Ms. Pac-Man.
Yay 30fps on Switch... Hardware is getting long in the tooth. I love my Switch but it's getting ridiculous.
This is the part I say "its great that someone is actually remaking by actually changing some parts, but did you really need to change the house?"
Unexpected, but it looks very pleasant. Never played the original, but it looks like it offers some good variety.
I can't deal with PacMan having a nose. My PacMan has no nose. He's supposed to look like a pizza with a slice missing. Not a Pinocchio ^_^
@Chocobo_Shepherd To be fair, he's pretty much always had a nose in official art going all the way back to 1980, and usually arms and legs too. There's always been this weird duality between the games where Pac-Man is just a ball with a mouth (and eyes if the resolution is high enough to allow it) and ones where he is more anthropomorphised.
Yes, I've always found it strange, and I don't think there's ever been an official explanation for it, but its been consistant since the start.
Wit so if her name is Pac-Mom, does Pac-Man call her that as well?
Oh no
@GetterImpact @korosanbo Excellent news! Perfect price point imo as I said above.
@Uska @Serpenterror Yeah, I definitely prefer the house design of the first game. The new one doesn't look bad (and tbh I didn't notice it when in the original trailer, didn't stick out as "wrong") but seeing them side by side I prefer the original as it looks more like a house. Far from a deal breaker, but its a weird choice to me to change something so drastically when there was no reason to (in the sense of Ms Pac-Man and Pac Jr had to be changed for legal reasons).
I prefer the remake's visuals moreso but only slightly so. Those visuals on the PS1 are fantastic if you consider that era
I played some of the classic Pac Man games ages ago and thought they were okay but I had no idea Pac Man had a Platformer game like this and I am looking forward to playing it for the first time when it comes out because I love Platformer games and this looks like it will be a lot of fun. .
@Debbiee Interestingly, Pac-Man actually had a platformer long before, in 1984 (Pac-Land) which was considered one of the major influences on both Super Mario Bros and Ghost 'n Goblins, both of which came out a year later! To my tastes, its pretty basic and not as fun as later games which perfected the genre, but it was very influential and was a big hit at the time. It was somewhat based on the Pac-Man animated series which was pretty popular too.
By comparisson of course, Pac-Man World is a lot more generic in that it was taking elements from existing games, but its a really fun game thats definitely still worth playing.
I wish they just went ahead and remade pacman world 2 and 3 as well. But hopefully those will come later.
@NeonPizza WOAH nice graphics!
@RushDawg Realtionships are tough to maintain. Ms. Pac-Man wanted a ring and Mr. Pac-Man didn't want to commit. At least he has still got his mom and she made it thru COVID.
So...Was the original game good? Or was it just another of those lower budget AA platformers?
This is definitely going on the wish list!
@BirdBoy16 : As much as I hate parroting memes...
Sigmund Freud has entered the chat
@John_Koshiro : Of course! That one slipped my mind. I skipped that as it's also included in the Museum compilation.
@Silly_G well I just looked up that meme, thanks……… I think
@samuelvictor you are correct. for me, aesthetically, arms and legs are cool, and maybe if the nose was smaller I could deal. but usually it's drawn as this super long rod LOL
@korosanbo Already on Sale at Videogamesplus.ca for $39.99CAD.
@Chocobo_Shepherd lol yeah sometimes the nose is so long it looks really strange, especially in early art.
It's interesting to note that they are including the classic Pac-Man too (which means it might use Museum +'s emulation, judging if it's unity or not again)
