The Nintendo Download Update is here, once again, and it's a busy line-up in Europe. We have four titles on the Switch eShop (though one actually arrived on 9th May), along with a whole lot of DLC. There are also varied options across 3DS and Wii U including a lot of discounts. Let's get to it.
Nintendo Switch eShop
Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition (Mojang, €29.99 / £19.99) - Arriving as a download (at a lower cost, too) before the equivalent cartridge in stores, this offers the full experience as enjoyed in Minecraft: Wii U Edition but on your shiny new hybrid system. There's obvious appeal in having this one on the go, and the Super Mario-themed content is all present and correct. We loved this version in our review. Available from 2am UK / 3am CET on 12th May.
NBA Playgrounds (Saber Interactive, €19.99 / £17.99) - Released earlier this week. With its 2 vs 2 gameplay, outrageous dunks and even elbow throwing, plenty will naturally think about NBA Jam with this one. Rosters are built through earning card packs (though this is achievement-based, not microtransactions) and you try to beat the best to rule the courts. We're waiting for the promised online update before issuing a final score, but you can see what we think of it so far in our NBA Playgrounds review.
Dark Witch Music Episode: Rudymical (Flyhigh Works, €8.00 / £6.99) - A spin-off to the 3DS games, this is a rhythm action game where you press the buttons in time to cut down Boing boings (bullets). You'll also need to jump at opportune times in order to avoid fiendish fire beams. We'll find our rhythm and let you know what we think in a review.
Garou: Mark of the Wolves (HAMSTER, €6.99 / £6.29) - Thought of by some as Fatal Fury 4, Mark of the Wolves debuts a roster of almost entirely new characters. If you are on the lookout for a great brawler to tide you over until Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers later this month, this could be the one for you - that said, we also have games like the brilliant The King of Fighters '98 battling for our attention on the Switch eShop. As a Neo Geo ACA release it'll also have more customisation options than you can shake a stick at.
Nintendo Switch DLC
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Builder's Pack (Mojang, €16.99 / £12.79)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Biome Settlers Skin Pack 1 (Mojang, €1.99 / £1.59)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Campfire Tales Skin Pack (Mojang, €1.99 / £1.59)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Candy Texture Pack (Mojang, €2.99 / £2.39)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Cartoon Texture Pack (Mojang, €2.99 / £2.39)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Chinese Mythology Mash-up Pack (Mojang, €5.99 / £4.79)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Festive Skin Pack (Mojang, €1.99 / £1.59)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Greek Mythology Mash-up Pack (Mojang, €5.99 / £4.79)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Halloween Mash-up Pack (Mojang, €5.99 / £4.79)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Pattern Texture Pack (Mojang, €2.99 / £2.39)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Plastic Texture Pack (Mojang, €2.99 / £2.39)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Redstone Specialists Skin Pack (Mojang, €1.99 / £1.59)
Minecraft: Switch Edition: Steampunk Texture Pack (Mojang, €2.99 / £2.39)
New Nintendo 3DS eShop
Pixel Hunter (Lemondo Games, €2.99 / £2.69) - This is a sidescrolling platformer that incorporates 3D Voxel-based visuals; your task is to run through five worlds (with some runner sections and boss fights included) and win back your character's weapons which have, apparently, been stolen by animals. Unfortunately we weren't fans of this in our Pixel Hunter review.
Triple Breakout (nuGAME, €4.99 / £4.99) - This aims to blend Breakout and Pong mechanics, with the chance to chase high scores or compete against the AI.
3DS eShop
Elliot Quest (PlayEveryWare, €10.99 / £9.99 until 31st May for those with the Wii U version on the same Nintendo Account, otherwise €14.99 / £13.49) - This was a quality title on the Wii U eShop and has been reworked for Nintendo's portable. This iteration adds some extra collectibles and Miiverse stamps along with autostereoscopic visuals; it could be well worth a look.

Wii U eShop
WinKings (Lemondo Games, €9.99 / £8.99) - This appears to be a game focused on fast-paced and chaotic arena battles, but beyond versus local battles there's also a campaign that can be played solo or in co-op. There's a Viking theme and apparently "120+ co-op and versus levels", so in principle this seems like one to watch closely.

I just bought Mutant Mudds Super Challenge yesterday from My Nintendo at full price with a measly 20% off... God sake, Nintendo!
Anyone know when physical minecraft comes out?
Well, I don't know about all of you, but surely the 'Jurassic Cubs walking together' 3DS HOME Theme is worth a look?
"WinKings (Lemondo Games, $9.99)".
Which European country uses dollars?
Already bought NBA Playgrounds, will get Minecraft when it's up and strongly considering Dark Witch but might wait to hear opinions. I have way too much to play on the Switch, can't find time for it all. Picking up Puyo Puyo Tetris tomorrow too as it's finally out physically in Australia.
I was waiting for a sale on Mutant Mudds, so nice! For that price I will gladly buy another 3DS game, although it may well be the last one
Holy moly, that's a lot of Minecraft DLC. Very pricey if you plan on getting that.
Too bad AA vs Layton is never discounted with all the other AA games.
I got Xeodrifter. sucks I had already got Mutant Mudds Super Challenge with the worse My Nintendo offer.
I'll definitely get Eliot Quest in time!
also Minecraft Switch! YES
Quick Question:
Is the eShop Minecraft the same version as the cart? Because the eShop version is just called "Minecraft Switch Edition" and the cart version is called "Minecraft Story Mode - Complete Adventure"?
@RainbowGazelle I've fixed it, and fear not, I'll get a damn good thrashing for this most heinous of errors. Not an error, a crime!
Is the "Minecraft: Switch Edition: Builder's Pack" the pack of ALL the dlcs?
@alasdair91 You're talking about two different games. Minecraft Switch Edition will get a retail release at some point, and that's the sandbox Minecraft everyone knows that's out tomorrow on the eShop.
Minecraft Story Mode (coming to Switch retail at some point this year as The Complete Adventure) is an episodic set of games developed by Telltale Games
Perhaps a few 3DS sale items at most.
Any idea when Last Resort is due on the Switch?
@ThomasBW84 Will you be reviewing WinKing, or is the Wii U dead to you guys now?
Some of those discounts have been improved since previous rounds. I bought the Megaman collection not long ago when it was reduced, but now it's a couple of quid cheaper.
Mutant Mudds and some of those Phoenix Wright games might finally be making their way on to my 3DS.
With so much Minecraft DLC available, I'd rather pay full price for the game and have it all on the cartridge instead. :/
@ThomasBW84 Sorry for the ignorance, but what is the difference between the normal version and a Story based version? The normal version has a story mode too, doesn't it?
I take it they are different enough to warrant different releases then?
@alasdair91 TOTALLY different games. Minecraft Story Mode is made by Telltale, the guys who made The Walking Dead game and Wolf Among Us. It's basically a choose your own adventure kind of game. You are shuttled along a very specific story with no exploration.
Minecraft: Switch Edition is Minecraft.
You can also have looked it up yourself.
@alasdair91 They are completely different games set in the same universe. The original game (mentioned here) is the sandbox construction game, the other is a point and click adventure game set it the same universe.
@alasdair91 story mode was just a stupid naming convention. Story Mode the telltale game is a full fledged story driven adventure that has no real connection to Minecraft proper. If you want a game where you build things buy Minecraft Switch Edition. If you want a story focused adventure, then you buy Story Mode.
Super hyped to be getting Minecraft tomorrow. I'd have gotten those Renegade Kid games had they been on offer a year or two ago. Bit late now.
I don't think I can say no to Xeodrifter at £1.99...
Garou MOTW is FINALLY here!
I'm sick of only legally owning the crappy DotEmu Steam release.
The tablet stand mode + pro controller setup works surprisingly well for fighting games. The joy-con D-pad is awful, unfortunately.
So no proper handheld Neo Geo goodness for me.
Ooh, lots of hefty Capcom discounts on 3DS. Could we maybe see Phoenix Wright and Resident Evil announced for Switch at E3?
Unless VC suddenly gets started there's nothing new for me till Disgaea 5 comes out.
@gcunit I'm not sure, but will try and find out (I don't assign reviews myself)
My sister got a 3DS recently and just finished PL vs. AA. Just in time for her to get the AA Trilogy! Score!
As for me, I might get that Dark Witch rhythm game if reviews are good.
@BustedUpBiker I read that as 'Phoenix Wright vs. Resident Evil' for a second and was very intrigued/confused. :')
I saw Jools Watsham's tweet about upcoming Atooi sale a couple of days ago. I think it's finally time for me to buy Mutant Mudds. I tried the demo few years ago. It didn't stand out to me but I've enjoyed a lot of simple platformers lately so I guess it's worth giving it a shot.
@ThomasBW84 Clicking on Mutant Mudds seems to direct you to its Switch eShop page instead of 3DS eShop page.
@Fandabidozi Excluding the non existent VC (including neo geo stuff for the sake of it too), I have street fighter, seiken collection, then nothing till mario. 5ish month drought
@BenAV i got same just waiting for the nba playgrounds online to start
Minecraft most certainly. Too busy with other stuff to justify another eShop purchase.
My 3DS doesn't have enough space for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice, so I can't buy it...
Why aren't there any discounts on the Switch?
@G-Boy New system with new games. Let those games age a bit before they begin discounting them.
I assume if you have Minecraft Wii U, you dont get a Switch version free?
You know, Reggie saying purchases are account bound and all that...?
Curses! Still nothing this week too!
@eltomo yeah but Switch edition is not the same as Wii U edition aaaaand Switch games are account bound... Wii U games are not...
Revelations for a fiver on WiiU is a great deal.
Will pop my Minecraft cherry tomorrow and the Phoenix Wright trilogy for a tenner looks tempting too.
I was expecting more for Minecraft, uhm.
Never bought it, and will never buy it eventually, though I'm interested just a bit for my child.
Shovel Knight treasure trove Update for Wii U is also available!
Please update accordingly NintendoLife!
I'll grab Xeodrifter for that price. I'm always tempted to get Resident Evil Revelations when it goes on sale, but I know I won't play it :/
Wow, Capcom is really spoiling 3DS owners. Show us Switchers some love, Capcom!
I'm so glad Europe still gets the discount news.
I'll actually buy some 3ds games because of it.
@G-Boy My 3DS doesn't have enough space for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice, so I can't buy it...
I'm sure there are games or demos you can remove to make room.
No Shovel Knight - Specter of Torment and Shovel Knight - Treasure Trove in the poll. They're out today on Wii U, for free if you already own the original Shovel Knight.
I'd buy Mega Man Legacy (and a few others) on Switch in less than a heartbeat!
For the first time since the Switch launched this is a "Nothing for me this week" week.
@alasdair91 I'm buying the vita cartridge tomorrow from limited run games. It will be over 30 quid with postage if that makes you feel any better 🤓
@sevnlabs actually Wii u games are tied to your account it's just that Nintendo don't believe in offering its customers the same perks PSN does
Minecraft + DLC is a lot of money
I'm sorry wallet

English Gameplay of
Dark Witch Music Episode Rudymical
I'm gonna get Minecraft.
I was hoping it would be out now, but I'll download it tomorrow instead.
@Menchi187
I really hope VC is made available during E3. Fingers crossed.
At the minimum I need GB/C/A, S/NES, N64.
Ideally Mega Drive, Dreamcast and GameCube. 😎
I just noticed the Minecraft Doctor Who packs aren't on this list. That's a shame, I would have liked to have got them.
I am tempted by Minecraft but will hold back for a physical release. Garou Mark of the Wolves I am still debating whether to get or wait for something like Pocket Rumble which is a less serious fighting game.
Got Disgaea 5 complete to think of this month and I will definitely be picking up Thumper & probably Shovel Knight Treasure Trove.
I downloaded Xeodrifter and Mutant mudds super challenge (the Wii u version). Good discounts. I also downloaded the discounted Back to bed, I had not done that before. And of course the Shovel knight update. Yes my dearies, it has finally hit Europe. Luckily.
@Bass_X0 I deleted the Ace Attorney Trilogy, but I still don't have enough space. I don't use the Nintendo Anime Channel very often, so I should probably delete it too.
I'll be getting Dark Witch Music Episode: Rudymical & a couple of 3DS home themes but that's about it.
@G-Boy Time to get a bigger SD card?
@G-Boy If you enjoy the Ace Attorney games, you have to get Spirit of Justice while its still on sale. Just keep deleting games and apps until you have enough space.
@Bass_X0 I'm playing it right now, and I fortunately just had to delete three games and the extra data for Nintendo Anime Channel and StreetPass Mii Plaza.
@G-Boy You'll enjoy Spirit of Justice more so than those apps anyway, but maybe you should invest in a larger SD Card.
