If I'm being completely honest... obviously this was going to happen?
Nintendo's biggest targets are things that are similar to their products, and things that involve earning money in some way. This is a live action Zelda movie being funded through Kickstarter. Come on.
@EarthboundBenjy It's just a matter of not giving us more than they feel we're paying for. If this were a standalone service with almost every Nintendo OST already there it'd probably cost at least 6x as much as base NSO (while probably still taking a long time to add soundtracks from newly released games).
The point of Nintendo Music though is not to sell access to music, but to bolster NSO (which is already pretty cheap for an online service that also comes with access to hundreds of classic games). The drip feed is just kind of natural for the business model.
@Lofoten I guess I somewhat misremembered the quote, they didn't outright say "the next game won't use it" but they did make it pretty clear the numbering system wasn't meant to be a series standard and was only repeated in Mario Kart 8 because it coincidentally fit the anti-gravity gimmick. I've included the quote below, I won't link to the article since it's not by Nintendo Life and I dunno what the rules are.
On the note of series standards, the Mario Party comparison doesn't make sense to do because numbering was a series standard up until Super Mario Party, and there was a deliberate distinction between the home console and handheld entries. Mario Kart doesn't have such a distinction, and the only games Nintendo tends to seperate from the widely agreed on "mainline" games are ones mainly developed by Bandai Namco (Arcade GP) and Velan Studios (Home Circuit). Tour on the other hand is not only generally a lot closer to the other "mainline" games, but is only ever separated by fans such as on the Super Mario Wiki as you've shown. It's honestly kind of disappointing that this line of thinking didn't dissappear when the Booster Course Pass had a huge focus on Mario Kart Tour, going as far as having courses that are considered new in both Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Tour in which case it's a little ridiculous that only the former is considered "mainline". Some have used the fact that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now has content from Tour as proof that it can't be Mario Kart 9, but Final Fantasy 14 has content from Final Fantasy 15 and 16 so I really don't see the issue.
The quote from a Nintendo Everything article:
Mr. Konno: This is a little more abstract, but when we had “Mario Kart 7,” we had the idea of calling it just “7,” because it was something actually unique to the series – we hadn’t used numbers before in any of the previous games, although the N64 had numbers. Mr. Iwata also like the idea of “7” being in the title. Then we started working on this project, and had the idea for this to be “Mario Kart 8” and there were some people who were opposed. They were like “Mr. Konno, didn’t you promise that we would only used the number 7, and that would be it for the numbering thing?”
So then what we did was grab those people, the staff members that were opposed to another numbered game, showed them the idea for the course, the Möbius strip, and how we twisted it into the number eight, and everyone was completely satisfied. “Oh, now we get it.”
@Lofoten I don't expect it to be called Mario Kart 10, and they've said themselves in the past they don't think they'll do numbers again, that's part of the point. Most other games with tentative titles are called Game (Year). Kirby Star Allies and Yoshi's Crafted World were called Kirby (2018) and Yoshi (2018) by the media when they were first announced, so I don't see why Mario Kart (2025) should be any different just because the last two games that weren't on the spooky mobile phones used numbers over a decade ago.
A news site should stick to the facts, and frankly Mario Kart (2025) being the 9th Nintendo-developed Mario Kart game is flat-out incorrect.
@Lofoten "It will be the 9th mainline Mario kart game" and this is decided by who exactly? Nintendo themselves has only ever placed Tour alongside the other "mainline" titles, and it both features a large amount of "mainline" content and was featured prominently in a "mainline" game through the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Booster Course Pass.
Your and others' preconceived notion that a mobile game can't be "mainline" has no bearing on anything.
"we're going to simply refer to as Mario Kart 9 until Nintendo says otherwise" why? There's no reason to go with something so divisive over like Mario Kart (2025) or Mario Kart (Tentative) or Mario Kart (Nintendo Switch 2) or something. Just feels like argument bait.
I think the BotW slander is rather unfounded, there are quite a few really good tracks there. Battle with Dark Beast Ganon, Hyrule Castle, Rito Village, etc., I think you'll find quite a number of great tracks if you just be open-minded.
@Navi The point is that this is an NSO feature, not a standalone subscription. It doesn't make much business sense to add value at a faster pace than they are now, unfortunately.
@echoplex The problem is we're trying to apply a normal streaming service mindset to something that is significantly cheaper (to most people using it, it may as well be free). When you step back and look at the actual business proposition here, the value is very evidently there since even with such a limited selection, you're getting access to things that are far more valuable than what you're paying.
What I'm trying to say is that while the app isn't very ideal considering what people want it to be, there's also no way what people want it to be would happen without it being significantly more expensive. There is the argument that since Nintendo owns the rights to most of these songs it shouldn't be a problem, but even a less problematic business such as Nintendo would never be so charitable.
To go and little further, what a lot of people are missing is that Nintendo hasn't really changed in that they're still pretty clearly not interested in the worldwide music business. The purpose of Nintendo Music is to bulk up Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Accounts, and generally to connect people further with Nintendo IP, not to directly make money off of their music.
@JohnnyMind The timing absolutely doesn't feel like a coincidence, but if his story is true I'm not sure it should. The song is very relevant now due to the movie and Shadow generally being marketed like crazy, so a fan telling him this now specifically makes sense I think.
@Fighting_Game_Loser I don't think it's that crazy tbh. If he doesn't really play the games and he obviously wasn't told by Sega it seems sort of natural, it's not like the song is often associated with any of the other games.
@Dev1024 No pattern necessary, it being an unannounced game is just sort of obvious if you consider which games shown in the reveal trailer are left. Super Mario 64 is extremely unlikely because we got a Nintendo 64 game just last week. Wind Waker is extremely unlikely because... read the above article. Donkey Kong Country 3 is pretty unlikely because DKC2 was added at the same time as icons on the NSO app, which I'd say is highly likely to be what happens with DKC3 as well (note that DKC1 also had icons a few months prior).
Pattern or no pattern, it's not likely whatsoever that next week will be a soundtrack that was in the trailer (intentional wording because we actually also know about Super Mario World as well from a promotional email from Nintendo of Europe, and that one is decently possible I suppose)
I have no sympathy for Palworld. Should Pokémon have a proper competitor? Of course it should, that would be great for everyone, but why are we championing a game that is very blatantly unoriginal and lazy? I feel like people just look at it as a Pokémon-like that runs better than modern Pokémon (despite not even having a Switch version for proper comparison) and put it on a pedestal for that alone.
If you want Pokémon to put out higher quality games, give it a higher quality rival I say.
For now I can still play these tracks normally, but adding tracks to one of my playlists that had them caused them to be removed from that specific playlist.
@JimNorman I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but the in-game message about the removal was updated.
It now says: Splatoon 2 Track Availability Update
Some tracks related to the recently added Splatoon 2 album were made available in error. These tracks could be accessed only by Search and were not part of the album track list.
These tracks are no longer available. Thank you for your understanding.
I've now tried adding these songs to another playlist while being offline and while it does work for the duration I am offline, the second I go online they get removed. This happens even if the playlist is put into a downloaded state.
Luckily my playlists that already had these songs prior to the removal are thus far unaffected.
@JohnnyMind It's really confusing because this just seems incredibly poor for PR? It's a net negative, there's no actual justification given, and the entire message reeks of being rushed out. With how popular Splatoon is in Japan, music very much included, I feel like this is guaranteed to see a lot of pushback, so who at Nintendo possibly thought this was a good idea?
I can confirm that if you added them to a playlist and have them downloaded you can still listen to them. My understanding however is that if you haven't downloaded them, then they cannot be listened to. Despite having them downloaded, I also can't add them to other playlists (at least when online, I haven't tried while being offline).
This is a real shame, and I recommend going to support website for Nintendo Music and sharing feedback asking that these tracks be re-added.
@NFrealinkling @Yosher The lack of Side Order music is because the official soundtrack release (titled Ordertune) hasn't released yet, that'll only happen on December 11th. It'll probably take at least a few months for it to be added to Nintendo Music in order to not hurt sales.

@Mariotag You can see which one your network uses in the Internet section of the Switch settings, under Frequency Band. You'll likely see either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, the latter is faster.
My home network supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connections, but lately the Switch is always showing 2.4 GHz. I've also at one point connected to my phone's hotspot, however my Switch couldn't even detect it while set to 5 GHz.
And so we've reached the end. I'm quite satisfied with the games chosen for these (especially because I went in assuming it would be 1 game per event), really future-proofs Ultimate even moreso than it already was.
@Zaruboggan It's both yeah. As far as I know both the Spirit Board and the Shop prioritize Spirits you don't have and/or haven't fought yet so you really shouldn't have much trouble getting them
@DwaynesGames The backer-only retrospective says he has a new campaign (while being ambiguous about the original campaign other than just saying that everything initially promised will still be present) so while technically he may have replaced them as the main focus it does still seem that they will still be present.
I too am one of the few backers of this game. The criticism and skepticism is quite deserved but personally I just find the whole situation pretty humorous. Since I already payed for the game way back when and thus don't have to grapple with the moral dilemma of whether to support them or not (lol), and have yet to play the 3DS original, I will be looking forward to playing Hatch Tales when it finally releases.
A little strange that both Piranha Plant Cove and Piranha Plant Pipeline will be in Wave 6 of the Booster Course Pass, eh? Though it makes more sense when you find out that Pipeline is named "Pipe Canyon" in Japan, meaning it doesn't have the same overlap there (Cove is "Piranha Plant Temple" fyi).
By the way, this music is incredible, and I'm sure it'll only go even harder once we hear it in 8 Deluxe.
@PikaPhantom With the way track IDs work, it can't be Yoshi Valley 2. With Kalimari Desert, Kalimari Desert 2 is in-between the regular Kalimari Desert IDs since KalimariDesert2 is alphabetically sorted between KalimariDesert and KalimariDesertR. Additionally, the latest Tour's update to the IDs heavily implies an upcoming Tour will heavily feature Bowser tracks, with this course being one of them (along with probably GBA Bowser's Castle 4). Edit: Didn't realize you mentioned the GBA BC4 part lol my bad
Might just be me but some of this stuff doesn't sit well. Would they really call it "Magolor Epilogue"? Why in the epilogue section is Magolor not outlined while in the adjacent Merry Magoland section both him and Kirby are? Some of the wording also feels kinda strange but I dunno.
What do you mean by "It's not clear at this stage exactly when the next tour is due to commence"? They start at the same time every two weeks, next Tour will begin on January 11th at 06:00 UTC time.
Meanwhile nobody is talking about the absolute dumbest change to Survival Bowling where you can seemingly no longer skip spectating and go straight to the results screen anymore. Seriously, how does this change benefit anyone??
"The time of year where we all want a Nintendo Direct, and then we don't get one, and we're really sad." is the only correct option and nothing can change my mind.
You really have to wonder how long it'll be until Nintendo realizes just how much money they're missing out on by not officially releasing their music (outside of Japan anyway) and by not putting them on streaming services anywhere...
I'm always holding out hope that they'll learn someday, and while I'd love to believe that this and the Pokémon stuff is a sign it's really hard to do so considering their past actions.
@Orokosaki Have you seen Xenoblade gameplay? The graphics themselves are great but the resolution is horrid. And when did I say they'd have to release it right now? I'm not expecting it to come before 2024. Not sure where that PS5 argument is coming from either since Nintendo would definitely not make games of that scale and I'm not expecting them to.
@Orokosaki One of the Wii U's biggest problems was the lack of third party support. Third parties are already starting to put less games on Switch due to moving to much stronger hardware so not upgrading just so they can focus on first party games is a terrible idea.
And that's not to mention that first party developers aren't doing so hot either with the Switch's limited power. It's largely agreed that Xenoblade for example would benefit greatly from better hardware.

Meanwhile nobody is talking about the absolute dumbest change to Survival Bowling where you can seemingly no longer skip spectating and go straight to the results screen anymore. Seriously, how does this change benefit anyone??
Re: Back Page: So, What Are We Calling This Not-E3 Conference, Anyway?
"The time of year where we all want a Nintendo Direct, and then we don't get one, and we're really sad." is the only correct option and nothing can change my mind.
Re: Another Popular YouTube Channel Pulls Nintendo Music After 500+ Copyright Claims
Re: Reggie Shares Thoughts On How Nintendo Can Prepare For The Switch's Successor
Put shortly, what are you even talking about?
Re: Reggie Shares Thoughts On How Nintendo Can Prepare For The Switch's Successor
