With Miitomo's Japanese debut it's been all go here at Nintendo Life Towers, so if you're someone who thinks they've missed out on some seriously spicy news, we've got you covered once again with our regular video feature Nintendo Life Weekly.
This week we look at the supposedly leaked image of what some are claiming to be a prototype controller for the Nintendo NX, Miitomo's tremendous iOS success, the sad passing of Pokémon creative director Eric Medalle, as well as the usual roundup of releases and reviews.

Well hopefully it remains as a prototype.
If this is for real, removing physical buttons is a grave mistake. Touch screens absolutely suck for traditional console games.
I have absolutely no interest in that controller.. I'd rather see a more traditional controller.. hate the Wii U gamepad as well.
Hmm, hope not.
The only thing i'd find it useful for would be as a rear view mirror in racing games. Although to be honest I can't remember the last time I've ever looked in the rear view mirror in any racing games. I'm excited about all these supposed leaks and news though about the NX.
edited out (sorry about that!)
@RobNYC1977 You might wanna re-formulate that comment: I find it to be "slightly" tasteless...
@Dakt Last time I checked this isn't Tinder or Grindr, so maybe we should stick to the topic instead of posting the same comment for the umpteenth time?
I really think Nintendo could release their own Nintendo phone in Japan.
If that controller turns out to be real, I'll probably use my money on PSVR instead this holiday, and say goodbye to my Nintendo fandom. That controller/handheld, real or not, looks like a total laughingstock. Here's hoping it's fake!
I've got faith in Nintendo, this can't be real.
Yeah...im not sold at all on the controller 'leak'. But if it were real, that would be just terrible. I actually think the gamepad is the greatest controller of all time. Its super comfortable (and i kinda like its bulkiness), and most of all it has the best of both input worlds with the buttons and sticks as well as a touchscreen. Now if only they tapped more into its potential.
@Dakt
All these comments...sounds like you need to ask him out!
It looks better than the wii u gamepad. I want one and hope its real.
@TheRealThanos edited.. sorry
To be technical, salt would make you more thirsty.
@invictus4000 hear me out here but maybe... just maybe! ....There's no potential to be tapped. gasp!
Come closer, I have a Pro Tip for ya: Nobody wants to look down from their 50" HDTV whilst playing a game to focus on a second screen. It. Breaks. Immersion.
Broswer? Sure. Quick Start Menu? Why not. Off TV Play? Great concept (although poor range)! But dual screen gaming? The market has spoken.
OT: If this is indeed the NX controller, which I do not believe it is, I will be sticking with my Xbox One.
Haha point taken. But honestly I love the added sense of control when it comes to a lot of things like maps, inventory management, and the like. It just adds this new dimension that clicks with me somehow. But yeah...at times it does detract from the glory of my TV setup.
I really hope that controller isn't what we end up getting. Just wouldn't feel right, imo.
there is some space for an ashtray and a cupholder in the middle, that would be nice for the casual gamer ^^
but without kidding, imo nintendo should not switch the controller every console release, it does not show a lot of confidence.
It's already been revealed that this was a joke post on 4chan that then was picked up by Reddit. Don't worry people, it's a fake! Though with all the leaks from Nintendo lately, I had my doubts too.
@gatorboi352 "Nobody wants to... " "the market has spoken"
Well no, actually. The market has said that dual screen gaming is still hugely popular, even though sales have somewhat declined. And the 3DS has regained some momentum, so yeah...
(and I know handheld gaming is not the same as home console gaming, but in this case there's some overlap because of the similarities)
You also can't just presume to know what everybody wants, because you simply don't.
If you can drive a car, you can play a game on two screens, it's as simple as that...
Another strange phenomenon is that the very same people that are whining about having trouble dividing their attention between the GamePad and the TV are somehow perfectly able to watch their favorite TV show and/or movie while simultaneously using their smart phone for apping or chatting...
@RobNYC1977 Thanks for understanding.
It better have buttons I can't stand touch screen
So... we're not gonna talk about how a guy responsible for the Pokemon logos died? Ok. Controller's more important, I guess...
@TheRealThanos There's a massive difference between a dual screen hand head device and a two screen console. You can see both screens at once with the hand held device... you're looking at the entire package... with the console, you are constantly forced from looking away from one to see the other... especially for people who have their televisions mounted on a wall higher up... it's apples and oranges. And if you truly don't believe the market has spoken, just look at the number of Wii U's sold to date.
@CompanionCube Had a feeling someone would go there, but you're wrong. FYI: sales & marketing is my job, so I probably know more about that than anyone on this site, even though my core business is IT-related, certain things apply to every market or industry.
There are numerous reasons why the Wii U has failed, but people not wanting it certainly isn't the one that is at the top of that list.
That's more a result of all the other things that actually were the reason for it not selling; cause and effect and all that...
As for why I made the comparison with handheld (and I was also already WAY ahead of you by admitting that handheld and console aren't quite the same) is because in this case it DOES apply. Hence also the car driving (and smart phone) example.
It proves that screens or viewpoints don't have to be on the same level or be the same size and distance for the human eye to be able to keep track of them. If there truly are people that are having so much difficulty in doing so, then I'd sooner come to the conclusion that it is their inability to do so and NOT due to an ill-designed device.
I always like to watch these videos, even though I know all the news beforehand. Watching Alex read it in the zany way he does is always good for a quick chuckle. I feel that's worth 3 minutes of my time. Gotta get laughs where you can, right?
On another note, not a whole lot of news this week... :/ At least there was the stuff about Zero Escape 3. Could not be more excited for that game!
The music in this video was so nostalgic. Aside from that though, I'm excited for Miitomo; it looks really good!
how can this have anything to do with the NX ? Oh, I just by accident made a picture with horrible quality and only some parts showing and then might as well leak this particular picture out to the public...
@gatorboi352
Gross, Xbox One. The console that almost became a literally worthless pile of plastic when the next generation version is released. I simply can't trust Microsoft after that initial "always online DRM" derp-fest that was the Xbox One announcement.
@giwayume wut.
@TheRealThanos it's not about inability, it's about "want". Your counter arguments are borderline laughable. If you can drive a car you can look at two screens? Lol what? The majority of the market have decided that the Wii U is not for them. Simple and plain. Based in my experiences? The GamePad. Anyone I've ever shown off my Wii U to has not even wanted to try the GamePad. It quite literally has had the exact opposite effect on the market that the original Wii and the Wiimote had.
@gatorboi352
Microsoft announced the Xbox One with always online DRM.
This means you need to connect to Microsoft's servers over the internet every 20 minutes or you get booted out of whatever game you're playing, including single-player games that don't need internet.
That also means that your Xbox One would become a useless piece of plastic whenever Microsoft's servers go down (and eventually, permanently, in the future because their servers won't support the console forever.).
They redacted this policy (obviously) because of the ginormous amount of backlash.
@gatorboi352 No offense but you really puzzle me. Sometimes your comments seem really well thought out, and other times either really opinionated/short-sighted and some reactions don't seem to belong to an adult person.
My examples are anything but laughable, you just need to understand the context I wanted to give with them. It was not just the car driving example, but also the smart phone one.
All I wanted to show with that is that we are perfectly capable of looking at different screens at various distances/heights/angles simultaneously. No need to read anything other than that between the lines.
You use a lot of your own opinion and experiences to form what you think is the majorities' vote. Just because you and your friends/relatives/acquaintances didn't want to use the GamePad then everybody must surely think the same. Well, they don't because lots of people, also here on NLife have the exact opposite experience when they showed the Wii U to other people, having a lot of fun with it, so yeah let's skip that one, shall we?
And the Wii U failed because of a lot of things, lousy marketing being the main reason, because that created so much confusion with the consumer (and even with retailers to a certain point) that what they did afterwards to try and repair the damage had little to no effect. Them trying to reach both the casual and the hardcore market also wasn't very helpful; they should have just focused on one or the other, at least to begin with.
The different architecture and lower market share because of the lousy sales and subsequently ever worsening third party support did the rest, but it had virtually NOTHING to do with their being a GamePad with the Wii U. Besides, a lot of games could/can also be played with a range of other Wii/Wii U controllers, so for many games you don't have to use it if you don't want to.
@TheRealThanos it doesn't matter if the controller was the reason, there is a huge issue with appearances. Anyone in sales and marketting can tell you that (btw, spent 7 years in sales and marketting before a recent career change). The appearance among gamers is the Wii U flopped... the other appearance among gamers is that the last two Nintendo systems have relief on gimmic controllers (I'm not arguing that they were or weren't gimmics, I'm just stating they weren't the norm). And while the Wii sold gangbusters, it pushed away the core gamers from Nintendo in favor of the larger casual audience. The Wii U didn't win back the core, but the casuals lost interest as well, because they'd moved on to mobile. Hence, only 10 million sold.
Now you've lost your core, you've lost your casuals, all you have left are die hard nintendo fans that will support anything the company does... and what it appeared the company was doing, again, was another gimmicky controller.
Anyway, we know it's fake now, but to say that part of the Wii U's failure had nothing to do with people not wanting to use a cheap, huge, fat tablet as a controller is facetious. It means you may not have a grasp or understanding of what the vast majority of consile gamers want from a console.
@CompanionCube First off, I'll see your 7 years of sales & marketing experience and I'll raise that by another 8 years AND I'm still in the business today having my own sales company, so I have more experience and my knowledge on the topic is obviously more recent.
Obviously the Wii U has flopped; Nintendo themselves even said as much, so there is no argument there, but I gave valid examples and reasons as to why the Wii U wasn't successful and it having a "tablet controller" (another one of those misnomers) is absolutely not one of the main reasons, which is also what I said before: I never said that it wasn't part of the reasons, just not the most important one. It added to problems already existing, making the overall situation worse.
It is VERY well documented that this is the case. Paramount was Nintendo's seeming inability to market the system the way it should have been so that it would have been clear that it wasn't a Wii add-on.
I do however agree with the outcome of it all being them having lost not only their previously won casuals but also the core gamers, save for the most avid Nintendo fan.
I'm also always genuinely amused by the usage of the word gimmick. If one is introduced and accepted, then it stands a good chance to become the norm (analog control, shoulder buttons, triggers, rumble, motion control) and if not, it forever remains branded a gimmick. But you weren't arguing the word gimmick so I digress.
To me, the fact that so many people were up in arms about the supposed NX controller is simply a testament of the stupidity and/or incapability/unwillingness of people to see the actual facts. No, let's all go shout and rage at a console manufacturer for something that they're not even doing. All so much easier... pfff...
So, if the "vast majority" of current console gamers is a bunch of sissy boy whiners that are never satisfied with whatever, then I'm proud to say that I'm definitely not a part of that loser culture.
Games are supposed to be a hobby, a thing that you can have some fun with during your spare time, NOT a thing to be angry, enraged or bitter about because a company doesn't do exactly what you want them to do.
Talk about not having a grasp... Apparently, gamers of today consider themselves to be so important that a company must cater to their every whim.
Back in the day, we just enjoyed our consoles and our games, and if we didn't have any new console or game for a while, we'd just find another way to entertain ourselves, without feeling the need to take our torches and pitchforks and walk up to the headquarters of the company that provided us with those consoles and games to "talk" some sense into them...
Sadly, the vast majority of gamers have turned into a largely despicable type of human being, deluded into thinking that there aren't any more important matters to worry themselves about than gaming...
P.S.
Not saying that you're part of all that, but as an older gamer I've seen this shift happening and as you can probably tell, it irritates the hell out of me.
