Re: Soapbox: I Hated Metroid: Zero Mission At First, Until I Loved It

@sdelfin

'glad to hear I'm not alone. It sucks not wanting to play a game because it makes you feel sick.

Now that you mention it . . . yeah . . . the 3D games I have no problem with are the third-person games. I'm glad I'm ok with those games.

'and glad there are 2D Metroid games too.

(Although the Mickey game is third-person. But there seems to be an odd rendering of the perspective. It's like a fisheye view more than a normal view. I'm wondering if that was what made me have headaches.)

@k8sMum
@HeftLaces

Yes.

And hardware doesn't last forever. And tracking down replacement used consoles is getting really expensive now-a-days.

So . . . once the console goes, we end up losing access to the games we played.

This is happening to Nintendo Land for us. One of my kids favourite game, as our GamePad is having a harder and harder time communicating with the console.

So . . . if the Switch 2 is backwards compatible . . . when our Switch breaks . . . instead of buying used, I could toss my money at Nintendo on a Switch 2 (or Switch 3 for that matter).

Re: Nintendo Will Offer "Unique Propositions" To Overcome Challenges Of Platform Transitions

NintendoDad

How about . . .

Nintendo release 2 new consoles.

1) Switch 2 — Just a more powerful Switch.

2) Screenless Switch 2 — More powerful Switch with no screen. Meant to be played attached to a TV. (Slightly less expensive than the standard Switch 2)

This could be used as . . .

A) A more power Switch for those that simply want a more power Switch.

B) The Screenless Switch can be used for those that don't want a portable Switch. Or to keep costs down for those that want a more powerful Switch, but would be fine using their current Switch while on-the-go.

C) You can plug your Switch 2 (or screenless Switch 2) into the TV, and use your existing OG Switch as a gamepad to play Wii U, DS or 3DS games.

D) Or for those that don't have an OG Switch, but want to have a gamepad, they could get both the Switch 2 and Screenless Switch 2.

But both would be backwards compatible.

Re: Nintendo Will Offer "Unique Propositions" To Overcome Challenges Of Platform Transitions

A Nintendo Gamer Jacket

The Nintendo Gamer Jacket would have 5 built-in speakers. So you could have surround sound while playing handheld mode. And a subwoofer at your chest to really feel the bass! LOL.

And there would be actuators at various points around the jacket that tap, poke or jab you.

If you are playing Five Nights at Freddy's, you might all of a sudden get a frightening tap on the shoulder.

Or if you're playing Arms, you might get a poke or jab in your side or gut.

And there would be a little fan on the back, right at the top to simulate an alien breathing down your neck.

Re: Soapbox: I Hated Metroid: Zero Mission At First, Until I Loved It

NintendoDad

Metroid Prime actually gives me a bit of a headache when I play it.

Certain 3D games do that to me.

Like Disney Epic Mickey 2 The Power of Two, which I got for our Wii to play with my daughter. I had to eventually tell her I couldn't play the game because it was giving me headaches.

But other 3D games I am totally fine with, like the 3D Zelda, Mario, Yoshi or Kirby games.

So . . . I am glad there are 2D Metroid games.

I finished off Metroid Samus Returns last year and it has become one of my favourite games.

I am currently working on Metroid Fusion right now.

As for Metroid Zero Mission . . . I like the addition of the map and progress tracking (vs the original). It really helps me as a casual gamer . . . since I might go 2-3 weeks (or more) between playing the game . . . so I won't remember where I am in the game, or what the map looks like. LOL.

RE: Hollow Knight / Axiom Verge . . .

+1. The more I see, the more I like.

I've just been holding off, because I want to force myself to finish off a couple of Switch games before I buy more. LOL.

But I think . . . if I just finish off one of the Switch games I've been working away at, I'll pull the trigger on one of these!

I'm pretty close to finishing off Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Only 1 world left.

Re: Poll: How Often Do You Trade-In Your Switch Games?

NintendoDad

I've got 2 reasons to keep our old games.

1) If we haven't finished it; and . . .
2) If we've finished it.

LOL.

If we haven't finished it, then I got to keep the game so that if we decide to try to finish the game, we've got it there to play.

If we finish the game . . . we put it back on the shelf up-side-down to show that we've finished the game. It's like our "trophy" for finishing the game. We've been doing this since our Wii. So we have a bunch of Wii, Wii U and Switch games "up-side-down" on the shelf!

It's kinda a nice reminder that we enjoyed those games.

Re: Soapbox: Donkey Konga Introduced Me To One Of My Favourite Songs Ever

NintendoDad

We still got Donkey Konga and drums. But we only have one drum, so when I'd play against someone else I'd have to use the standard GC controller which I wasn't very good at. LOL.

There are other rythym games that use just the controller, but playing the drums makes for a more engaging game IMHO.

IMHO a good alternative is the VR game Beat Saber where you wave your hands around with virtual light sabers while shifting side to side. But it's quite the workout.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 9th)

NintendoDad

I didn't have much time over the past few weeks to play.

But yesterday my family decided to play a couple levels of Overcooked 2.

And we started Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. That is a hilarious party game.

For me I'm taking a break from OOT and I started up Super Metroid up on NSO. And Metroid Fusion (GBA) on our DS. I finished Metroid Samus Returns (3DS) in the summer and really enjoyed it, so I've been planning to take a run at the older games (but newer versions) before starting Metroid Dread.

Good gaming everyone.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Like To See More Streaming Media Apps On 'Switch 2'?

NintendoDad

I'm kinda torn on the subject. LOL.

I liked having Netflix on the Wii. It was a super easy way for our kids to watch Netflix. I mean . . . we already had a Wii. It was already hooked up to the game room TV. And our kids knew how to use the Wii. Super simple.

But if Netflix, Disney+, . . ., etc came to Switch 2 . . . then our kids might end up using the Switch 2 all that much more. And then I'd never get my hands on it to play games! LOL.

The way I got our game room TV set-up . . . I have the Switch hooked up to one HDMI port and a Roku streaming box hooked up to the other HDMI port.

If the kids want to watch shows . . . they can watch it with the Roku on the TV while I disconnect the Switch and play in another room. LOL.

Re: Anniversary: Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Is 10 Years Old Today

NintendoDad

I just got this game for our 2DS.

I'm still finishing off OOT 3D. (Just the Big Boss). And I've started MM 3D.

So I got LBW for after that.

From what I've seen, it looks good.

I've never played ALTTP. What is everyone's thoughts on playing ALTTP first? Or should I just dive into LBW even though I haven't played ALTTP?

Re: Talking Point: Going Home - Ocarina Of Time's Best Locales

NintendoDad

For me . . . it's hard to say just one place.

It's all so good.

What stands out to me is how this world now exists in my head! If I think of a place, I can see Link running / riding through the world to get there.

That's why I've said . . . if this existed in VR, it would be so cool!

But if I had to pick one place, I would cheat and say The Lost Forest . . . because it is a short cut to a bunch of places! LOL.

Re: Talking Point: Does Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Need A Full Remake?

NintendoDad

Hey . . . how about . . .

A new version that you can toggle the graphics to be either N64, 3DS, or (potentially) newer graphics. Like how you can swap graphics on-the-fly with R-Type Dimensions EX?

Or includes the different variations of the game . . . N64, 3DS and Master Quest? You get to choose which version you play?

And how about adding in some history and videos like they did with Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition for the Wii?

Re: Talking Point: Does Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Need A Full Remake?

NintendoDad

I played OOT 3D for the 1st time this year. (Not quite done. But done all the temples. Just last boss to beat.) It is a phenomenal game. IMHO it would be a shame for this story not to reach a bigger audience. IE an audience that may prefer contemporary graphics.

Don't get me wrong . . . I am not arguing that the N64 version is not playable, and not a gem.

Just saying that the story is so good that, IMHO, it really deserves the chance to be retold to a new audience.

It's like how I've tried to pick-up and play Metroid II Return of Samus (For GB) many times. But I just don't have a lot of time to sit down and play. And my memory sucks. So everytime I'd pick up Metroid II, I kept forgetting what I had done, and what I was planning to do next.

But the remake . . . Metroid Samus Returns, with its built-in map, made it so easy for me to simply sneak in 15 minutes here, an hour there and remember what I had done, what I was going to do next. And the update in graphics was a treat. The remake made this game totally accessible to me, a casual gamer. It made it a game I couldn't put down . . . and I ended up finishing it in a few months.

So . . . the TLDR (IMHO) is . . .

The original is there for those that want authenticity. But I would totally want a remake with contemporary graphics, and QOL improvement like a streamlined inventory management system (like the 3DS version).

If N came out with a good remake . . . I would get it and play through the game again. I usually don't play through games again . . . but OOT has been so immersive . . . I would totally want to visit this world again.

Re: Soapbox: Zelda: Ocarina Of Time's Kokiri Forest Rivals World 1-1 As A Perfect Intro

NintendoDad

After 5 years of owning the game (on 3DS), I finally decided to sit down this year and really give it a go. 'all the temples done . . . just trying to find two heart pieces I missed along the way before trying to finish it off . . .

This game is so immersive, it's simply amazing.

So far, the best game I've played. (Although I also think that about Metroid Samus Returns, which I just finished off this summer. LOL.)

And as for Kokiri Forest . . . it didn't feel like a "tutorial" area to me. It just felt like the 1st little mini quest. That's how good they made the "tutorial" IMHO.

RE: Absence of Classic Midway Aracde

Yes. I would agree.

I was thinking about how the Switch is a great retro gamer's platform. You've got a bunch of NES, SNES, N64, Game Cube, Wii, Wii U, GB(C), GBA, Sega, etc on it. It's really a great way to access these classics.

It's a shame you can't play Defender, Gauntlet or Joust on it . . . especially while playing the movie Ready Player One in the background. LOL.

NOTE: Galaga is one of my favourite games. So much that I've actually bought the Namco Museum 6 times now. LOL. 2 copies on GC (One in a case that sits on the shelf, and one disc-only that lives in our GC), Wii version, DS version, and the cartridge for Switch as well as DL. If Midway Arcade Treasures came to Switch, I'd totally get it.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 18th)

NintendoDad

@somnambulance

Agreed! LOL. Switch needs Root Beer Tapper!

For anyone who still has their Game Cube or Wii . . . Root Beer Tapper is on the Game Cube Midway Arcade Treasures disc. A 20-game compilation . . . with games like Defender (I+II), Gauntlet, Joust (I+II) . . . and the last game on the list . . . Root Beer Tapper.

One of the few Game Cube games I got on the shelf!

@Rainz

RE: Hollow Knight . . . Good luck on your game! Yeah. Besides Zelda and Metroid games . . . I'm thinking the games I'd like to get next would be Hollow Knight and Axiom Verge (1 & 2).

RE: Overcooked! 2 . . . LOL. You got to be ready to say . . . "Sorry. I didn't mean it like that." a lot. LOL. I'm thinking this game might actually be good to practice team building / management. LOL.

Take care,

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 18th)

NintendoDad

Welp . . .

I'm starting up Majora's Mask on our 2DS! LOL.

I haven't finished OOT 3D yet. But I'm just running around trying to figure out the 2 heart pieces I missed, and the 15 skull coins before I go after the big boss.

The announcement of the Zelda movie has got me wanting to try to play the Zelda games I got so I have a bit more backstory to the movie when I see it. LOL.

But also . . . my wife and daughter have picked up playing Overcooked! 2 again! So we are trying to finish off stages on it.

Happy Gaming Everyone!

@WiltonRoots

RE: Link's Awakening / another top down Zelda after this . . . .

Have you played TLoZ Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages on NSO?

I haven't finished Awakening myself yet. I started . . . and then decided to do OOT instead. Then next I'm going to try to do MM. But after that I'm planning to restart Awakening.

Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda Game Should Be Adapted For The Movie?

NintendoDad

For me personally . . . I don't want one of the games to be the complete story. I don't want to know where the story is going, and get to enjoy it new as I watch it.

Of course . . . I want to see the elements of TLOZ strongly embedded!

And if story lines from the different games are encorporated . . . maybe do a time-travel / multiverse sorta thing so all story lines are valid, but a new combined story happens that blows us away. LOL.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (November 11th)

@LikelySatan

RE: Metroid Samus Returns

Yes. It was the 1st time I played it. I've only had the 2DS for about 5 years. And MSR is an expensive cartridge so I've not actively looked at getting it. But I managed to find myself with a cartridge one day at an awesome price. In the past I've tried to start M2RoS, but since I can only play 2-3 hours a week . . . and sometimes every other week, I kept forgetting what the heck I was trying to do. LOL. The map in MSR and the updated play made all the difference for me. It made it a game I could not stay away from.

RE: Metroid Prime

Yeah. That looks really good. I never played that in Game Cube or Wii days. I am kinda torn which I should attempt next. Metroid Prime or Metroid Dread.

But I've put that decision on the backburner as I try to finally finish OOT (and start MM) on my 2DS.

Happy Gaming!

Re: Reaction: What's Your Gut Feeling On The Zelda Movie News?

NintendoDad

Unfortunately, I think this movie is going to disappoint some, no matter which way it goes.

For those that wanted an animated movie, it is already disappointing them.

If this movie plays like Link's Awakening . . . those that wanted a darker Hyrule will be disappointed.

If this movie plays with a darker theme . . . those that wanted a lighter more comic movie will be disappointed.

IMHO I think the best that can happen is that those making the movie just pick an audience and make the best dang movie they can to please that audience. 'make the movie they want to make! 'don't try to please everyone.

If its good, even if its not someone's personal cup-o-tea . . . they'll still have to respect it as a good movie. LOL.

The Legend of Zelda has such an expansive and rich world / universe and a large breadth of characters and stories.

Me, personally . . . I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

Re: Nintendo Switch Has Now Sold Over 132 Million Units

NintendoDad

Well done Nintendo!

It's been fun watching the numbers as the number of Switch consoles out in the wild kept rising.

But the real benefit has been all the support for the Switch and all the games that we now have available to us.

IMHO doesn't matter if the Switch does go to number 1 . . . I'm just enjoying all the games!

Re: Super Mario Party + Red & Blue Joy-Con Bundle Announced

NintendoDad

What a great deal! If we hadn't just gotten new JoyCons last month . . . I would have totally gone for this . . . even though we already have the game. With a digital download . . . we could leave the cartridge @ home and still have the game with us wherever we take the Switch.

@Goofonzo . . . I agree. It's a good game as far as Mario Party games go. It's nice they have one for this platform. For anyone that is hating on the game . . . it means they are not the target market for the game.

Re: Talking Point: Which Old Track Do You Wish Had Made It Into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?

NintendoDad

I have to agree on Wario Colosseum.

As much as I think the selection of the booster packs is fantastic . . . Wario Colosseum seems like the one that was missed. LOL.

Just seeing the name Wario Colosseum . . . now I've got that track song stuck in my head! LOL.

(Of course, everyone is going to have that one or two that they would have personally added.)

On the Game Cube, my 3 favourite courses were Yoshi's Island, Wario Colosseum and Baby Park. The amount of drifting was a lot of fun.

The thing I miss the most, though, is having 2 players in 1 kart. That made it a family game for us, since there is a big gap in ages between our kids. Our youngest was able to play along throwing bombs and such at the other racers way before she was able to pilot one of the karts. Now, though, I can't keep up with her in Mario Kart 8.

As for Wario Colosseum . . . when I get the bug to play it, I just power up our Game Cube (or one of our Wii-s).

Re: Newly Discovered Nintendo Filing Shows Off "Dual-Screen, Detachable Device"

NintendoDad

For me personally . . . if this thing could fit in my pocket . . . I'd be in. LOL.

The Nintendo Switch is a hit. 3rd best selling console of all time.

But I still take one of our Nintendo DS out and about when I want a console that I can slip into my pocket.

Also . . . if it does have asymmetric game play and then N brings back Nintendo Land (or release Nintendo Land 2) I think I'd be in. Nintendo Land is one of our favourite games as a family and its the reason we still fire up our Wii U.

Then again . . . I don't need the 2nd screen. (As nice as it is for Nintendo Land, and for Ocarina of Time on 3DS (which I'm currently playing.)) I'm fine with 1 screen.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 21st)

NintendoDad

Today I'll be playing a game where I try to fit the backyard furniture back into the shed. It's a game I like to call getting ready for winter. LOL.

But earlier today I continued my quest to hack away at Ocarina of Time (3DS). I've finished the 3rd dungeon and getting ready for the 4th dungeon. This game has so much depth.

Later I'm going to try to get my daughter to play another level (or 2) of Kirby and the Forgotten Land. We are pretty close to finishing that one off. But I think she'll want to try to hack away at Cuphead.
