But at college I didn't have a TV, so no way to use a set-top console.
So I got a Nintendo Game Boy and it came with Tetris!
Saved me a lot of quarters versus playing Tetris on the arcade machine at the college bar.
As for the 1st Nintendo game, it was probably that baseball game for the NGB. LOL.
Years later, when I had kids we got the Nintendo GameCube. And we had Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart Double Dash, Super Smash Melee. Still have the NGC and our favourite games.
Ok. Originally thinking not much Switch time this weekend.
Had family over yesterday and we decided to go for a drive. My youngest decided to bring the Switch for the drive, so they were playing Switch in the back as we drove around!
That's one more way to get Switch time in on the weekend!
So I did some searching and found an article that suggests that Steam is looking at Windows 11 and they have a team. "the red team is there to ensure that, at the fundamental level, the new tech is ready for Windows 11."
RE: Linux . . . it has been my intention to learn it. Someone gave us back an old laptop that we had given them because they weren't using it. I tried to install Linux on it, but 1 version wouldn't install. Another, I installed but it crashed as soon as I tried to run 1 program. So I tried to install Win10 on it and it worked perfect the 1st time. Only has 4GB on it. Old Intel Core 2 Duo or something like that. I think the laptop is from 2007? It does everything I need. I have all the programs I regularly use loaded up on it.
As long as the SteamDeck is more powerful than that, then I would be good to go (depending on how much resources Win11 take.) LOL.
But I've got an old computer that I am thinking would be a good candidate for Linux.
Yes. But I haven't gotten familiar with Linux yet. LOL.
I was planning to convert one of my old computers over to Linux to start learning it, but haven't gotten around to that yet.
But in the video (above), they say it can boot other OSs.
If it can do Win11 (even with the TPM 2.0 requirement), then when that gets phased in 4 years down the road, as my old computers become obsolete because they can't run Win11, then maybe a device like this can serve 2 purposes?
@Would_you_kindly . . . Yes. I heard about that. But . . . Win10 does everything I need for now. I don't want to spend the time installing Win11 until I'm forced to. LOL. I'm just thinking down the road, if Win11 does enforce TPM 2.0, then my computers can't move to Win11.
1) Can this thing run Windows 11? Does it meet the Win11 requirement for TPM 2.0?
2) Can you boot Win11 from a USB stick plugged into a USB-C dock?
Win11 is coming. Win10 is said to only have 4 more years of support. And most of my computers don't meet the TPM 2.0 requirement of Win11. So in 4 years time, I may have a lot less computers around the house.
If this thing can run Win11 from a USB Stick plugged into a USB-C dock, maybe I'll get one of these as one of my "computers" instead of buying a new computer. I can run our Steam games undocked, and use it like a computer while docked?
I don't need a lot of power for the stuff I do on Win10 on a daily basis.
I've got a Win10 computer with only 4GB and it does me fine for most things.
I voted "The Switch counts as a handheld enough for me."
I kinda think it makes sense for Nintendo to concentrate on the Switch, instead of dividing their resources and target audience.
We have a case for our Switch. My daughter has taken it to her friends a few times.
But . . . on vacation, I am more likely to take one of our DS or our 2DS so that we don't lose or damage our Switch. LOL.
Now, Nintendo has brought out small portable games recently. The Game & Watch Super Mario Bros and Zelda games. So they are doing something portable, that isn't dividing the audience away from the Switch.
If anything more, maybe a Game & Watch that has multiple games in it? Or maybe a Nintendo GBA "Classic" that has ~20 built-in games in it. Maybe a combination of GB(C) and GBA games. But a nice back-lit screen.
GBC Super Mario Land or Super Mario Bros Deluxe?
GBA Mario Kart Super Circuit
GBC Zelda Links Awakening DX or Ages / Seasons?
GB Tetris . . . although I wouldn't hold my breath for that one. LOL.
GBC R-Type DX
GBC Metroid II DX
GBC Donkey Kong Country / 2 / 3
GBA Dr Mario
GBA Mario vs Donkey Kong
GBA Super Mario World
GBA Metroid Zero Mission
etc.
A great handheld when you want small, or you don't want to risk your Switch.
Or for those that haven't decided to get a Switch yet, but want to get a portable Nintendo fix.
IMHO I think it totally makes sense to have Wii Sports / Sports Resort ported to the Switch!
Switch already plays NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii and Wii U games.
Why not make it the ultimate destination for all gamers. Gamers that want new titles, and those that want to play the old titles again . . . or . . . for the 1st time!
I remember going to Electronics Boutique in high school. Back then I used to call it EB, because I was just too lazy to say Electronics Boutique! LOL. "I'm going to EB!"
Then years later the signs actually changed to EB Games! LOL.
Now-a-days, a lot of the EB Games around me have closed down. 2 near my work. And 1 in my home town. But we still have 1. My daughters and I drop in every now-and-then to browse around. I look at the used (recharged) games. And that is where we buy our Roblox and Steam cards, and Harry Potter stuff.
Idea: Now that Disney Stores are closing, maybe GameStop can bring in more Disney merchandise?
As a long time Netflix customer, I find this intriguing.
If it doesn't cost anything extra, of course I'll try it out.
But RE: Nintendo, it is the IP that me and my kids like. Mario. Yoshi. Zelda. Donkey Kong. But glad that games like Minecraft and Among Us is available on the Switch as well.
What I really want is Netflix to introduce Audio Books, and old time Radio Shows!
I lot of the time, I have Netflix on in the background as I do other stuff. Like clean the garage, or work on the computer.
If Netflix had audio books, I'd listen to them in the car while I drive to work!
We have a bunch of games like that. We don't have a lot of games, so space is not an issue.
But, just the other day, my youngest picked up the Switch and started playing Kirby Star Allies. We hadn't played it in a year or so. We stopped at a particularly hard boss battle. But I guess we (her) got way better. (Her because my job in the boss battles is just not to die. LOL.) And we beat the boss. And then we looked at each other and said, "That seemed way harder than all the other boss battles. You don't think we finished the game, do you?" And just as we were saying that, the end credits started scrolling up. LOL.
So now, we'll just leave it on the system. Probably not play it much. But every now-and-then we'll go back in and find all the stuff we missed. We did that for Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii), Yoshi's Wooly World (Wii U), and Super Mario 3D World (Wii U). It may take us years to finish a game, but we seem to get there. LOL.
I guess the next up is going to be finishing Yoshi's Crafted World!
1,000,000 I bought M+R for my daughter. But I was the one that ended up finishing it. I just couldn't stop playing it. It was so addictive! LOL. I was so sad when I finished it. I was totally hoping for a sequel!!! LOL.
There is also stopping a game, but with the possibility of getting back to it.
My youngest and I finished off the 1st two Skylanders games. But never finished the 3rd.
We kinda got into other games, like Lego games, a lot of the Kirby and Yoshi games.
But . . . down the road, if we are feeling nostalgic . . . I still have those old games and our save points. We could also go back to them down the road.
1) Wii U ports, IMHO make sense. Only 20 million Wii U's sold. So any good games on the Wii U, only a fraction of that user base got to play it, which deprives many, many gamers. LOL. So if Nintendo wants to let more gamers play those games on Switch, I think that is good for gamers and Nintendo ($$$).
2) As for other ports . . . bringing older games (like N64, Gamecube or Wii) games to the Switch I think also makes sense. There are probably a lot of new Switch owners that never had a N64, Gamecube or Wii. They get to play these great games for the 1st time! And for anyone that sold off their old console, it brings a way to play an old favourite.
3) No one mentioned Mario vs. Rabbids. I don't remember that game being out for GC, Wii or Wii U. And it ended up being one of my favourite games on Switch. I would totally buy a version of that game with new levels. (I already bought all the DLC for the original.)
4) I could totally go for a new Mario Kart for Switch. Bring in new courses and a new mechanics of some sort. My family and I have been playing the same game for 7 years now. LOL. Although I appreciate the 2 weapons vs. 1 weapon vs the Wii U version.
5) As for ports, I would vote for Gamecube Mario Kart Double Dash and Gamecube Super Smash Bros Melee. When the gang came over (before COVID) those two games got fired up a lot, even though we had the Wii and Wii U versions of those games. I miss the two players in one car from Mario Kart Double Dash. When you are done racing each other, it is funny just trying to attack each other. Also . . . funny having the 2nd person in your car not on your team and trying to make you crash while you drive.
I am just pointing out that no matter which way Nintendo takes . . . there is going to be part of the user base that says it was the wrong direction. So it is a no-win situation for Nintendo as far as keeping everyone happy. But it happens to be a win-win situation for users that want a more powerful system. And for anyone that gets the new system, they get to play the old games.
I was just pointing out that if Nintendo was bringing out an entirely new system everyone would be happy because Switch owners could be happy staying with their Switches. And the new system owners could be happy with their new system.
But if this rumour is right, then the new system just happens to be called the Switch Pro and . . . it happens to allow you to play the old Switch games on it.
The Switch platform may have made it a lot easier for Nintendo to provide backward compatibility. Something that was lost between Wii U to Switch. (Potentially providing game developers with a longer run for their games?)
If so, IMHO that may be better than having to buy the same game again for the new console.
So . . . some games I don't bother buying again, and just use on the old console.
Of course . . . there are certain games I would buy new versions of. We have 3 versions of Super Smash Bros (GC, Wii, WiiU), a bunch of versions of Mario Party or Wii Party and 4 versions of Mario Kart (GC, Wii, WiiU and Switch).
If, down the road, they brought out a more powerful Switch console, and my kids are still playing it, and there was a new version of Mario Kart out for it, I'd be very tempted to get the new Mario Kart for Switch Pro.
There is a portion of Switch users that want a more powerful Switch that can then allow more games to be ported over. And there is a bunch of Switch users that don't want a variation that can then mean their Switch can't play all the games.
No matter what Nintendo does, there is going to be happy Switch users and unhappy Switch users. A no-win situation.
Also . . . two ways to look at a more powerful Switch.
Either . . . .
1. It is a more powerful variation that means our current Switch can't play all the games. (Like our 2DS can't play all the exclusive New 3DS titles.)
or
2. The new Switch is a new system that happens to be able to play all the old games from the original Switch. Sorta like how our Wii can play Gamecube games.
IMHO It really is (potentially) a glass half-filled or a grass-is-always-greener sorta situation here. LOL.
If this happens to be the case . . . I don't have the cash to run out and grab a new console. But it would be my next logical step as then maybe I'd get access to our current Switch, which my daughter grabs most days after school. LOL.
It can also bring in more users (that have been holding off for a more powerful console), which then means a bigger user base and more potential for Software Developers to want to port more games to the Switch.
Maybe a bit too soon, seeing as there are many 3DS / 2DS consoles still out there.
But I was thinking . . . down the road, it could be possible on the Switch.
Just take the controllers off the side. Rotate the console sideways so that the display is taller than wide. So now you have room for both the upper and lower screens (of the 3DS title) to be displayed on the Switch's (sideways) screen.
Then all you need is a gizmo to hold the controllers on either side.
@TheFox. Yes. Also, if the Gamepad fails, not only can you not play certain games (like some of Nintendo Land, and Lego City), you also cannot change your WiFi settings. This reminds me that this summer I am going to set up a separate WiFi hub for our Nintendo gear. That way . . . if down the road I can't change the WiFi settings on the Wii U, I can just keep having a separate WiFi hub and keep naming it the same thing. Without the Gamepad, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros is still playable as are all our Wii games.
As for gear that lasts. I can't believe how long our Gamecube controllers have lasted. We got them in 2004 or maybe 2005. And they still work! LOL. And we've used them on our Gamecube, Wii, Wii U and now the Switch (with both the Wii U adapter and the 8BitDo Gbros wireless adapters.).
RE: Shoulder button. I hear you. I have one Nintendo DS with a bad shoulder button. But I bought that one used and it came that way. So not sure how much it was abused. LOL.
@TheFox
Yes. I guess it could be either. I tested our Gamepad by taking it over to our friends and our Gamepad did not work very well with their Wii U console, so I made the "assumption" that it's the Gamepad. And its a lot easier to open the Gamepad than the console, so that is where I decided to start. But reading up on it, somewhere along the way I read that the drop-in charger was potentially the culprit. And a lot of the times it is the Gamepad that is bad. So . . . I am going to swap in this module and see if it works. In the meantime I threw away the drop-in charger, and we only charge the Gamepad with a plug-in charger from here on in. Also . . . if we get it working, no more watching Netflix on the Gamepad!!! LOL. We all have cellphones now to watch shows. But as for reliability . . . the Gamepad failing is one of the few things that have gone wrong with our Nintendo products. Our Gamecube, Wii, DS Lites, 2DS, and Switch all still work. Only the Wii U Gamepad and a bit of Joycon drift. But that is about it for faulty gear. We are pretty happy campers here.
Just updated our Wii U! Now just have to fix the Gamepad (waiting for new BlueTooth module) and we'll be up and running! I still have the Wii U out (along side our Gamecube, Wii and Switch) because we still like to play Nintendo Land and . . . I still haven't bought Smash Bros for the Switch so we still fire up the Wii U for Smash Bros for 8 players. But if 4 or less players, our friends' kids like Smash Bros for the Gamecube. None of them like the Wii version of Smash Bros.
Well. We've been a Nintendo family for a long time. (TBH I was a Sega guy before. LOL. I had a Sega Nomad.) But my sister got us a Nintendo Gamecube when our oldest was very young. We played a lot of Mario Kart on that system. We went on to get the Wii, Wii U and Switch as well. Between Mario Party, Kirby, Yoshi, Super Mario . . . lots and lots of memories. But I think for the Switch, it is a very recent memory that has come to the top. When COVID hit, my youngest couldn't see her friends so much. But recently, a lot of her friends got Switches, so they are getting to play together on-line a lot now! It's so funny hearing her chatting away with her friends playing games as if they are in the same room.
I played Kirby's Epic Yarn on the Wii with my younger daughter. It was the second game that we completed together. (The 1st was Skylander.) What made it great was that it was fun, cute, but also challenging to figure out what you were supposed to do each level. Also the 2 player mode the 2nd player actually played! LOL. You could really work together to finish levels. Much more engaging than simply shooting stars like in Super Mario Galaxy. We also finished Yoshi's Woolly World. And now working on Yoshi's Crafted World. Great games!
QubicGames made Gnomz! One of my favourite games on the Wii. A game that drove my family mad!!! LOL. I thought it was funny until my kids started consistently beating me!!! LOL. I really wish Gnomz was available for the Switch!
Sometimes I hold my Gamecube controller backwards or upside down. When I play Mario Kart with my family I always win. So my family makes me hold the controller upside down just so they have a chance to beat me. It really bugs them when I win anyway. LOL.

Both play amazing!
I've probably played the equivalent to a few hundred dollars in quarters between the 2 of them. LOL.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Pro "Will Have Exclusives", Says Insider
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Pro "Will Have Exclusives", Says Insider
Nintendo is kinda in a no-win situation here.

@JasonHenderson
RE: 3DS games on Switch.
Re: Wii U Receives Its First System Firmware Update Since 2018
@TheFox.
LOL.
Re: Wii U Receives Its First System Firmware Update Since 2018
@TheFox
Re: Feature: Potential Switch Port Round-Up - The Wii U Games That Haven't Come To Switch
My vote is for Nintendo Land!!!
But, rather than a port . . . how about a new "Nintendo Land 2".
Nintendo Land is one of my family's favourite games, and the biggest reason we still fire up our Wii U.
IMHO just port the games that work with one screen. Add some new games. And call it "Nintendo Land 2".
As for the asymmetric games that require 2 screens . . . maybe port the games to work, but require two Switches and an on-line subscription!
Re: Wii U Receives Its First System Firmware Update Since 2018
Just updated our Wii U!
Re: Wii U Receives Its First System Firmware Update Since 2018
@TheFox
I believe it may be the wireless BlueTooth module. My Wii U Gamepad is experiencing the same issue. I've ordered the part and just waiting for it to come in. Hoping this will fix it.

Re: Nintendo First Revealed The Switch Four Years Ago Today
Re: Soapbox: 10 Years On, Kirby's Epic Yarn Is Still The Pink Puffball's Finest Outing
Re: Celebrate 15 Years Of QubicGames, Lots Of Codes Up For Grabs
QubicGames made Gnomz! One of my favourite games on the Wii. A game that drove my family mad!!! LOL. I thought it was funny until my kids started consistently beating me!!! LOL. I really wish Gnomz was available for the Switch!
Re: Random: Child Holding Famicom Controller The Wrong Way Causes Outrage Online In Japan
Sometimes I hold my Gamecube controller backwards or upside down. When I play Mario Kart with my family I always win. So my family makes me hold the controller upside down just so they have a chance to beat me. It really bugs them when I win anyway. LOL.
