We held off getting the Switch until the 2nd year. Ours is in great shape. But it doesn't go out of the house much. Only if we know we are going somewhere we are going to have to wait a while or if my daughter goes over to a friend's. (And for those instances, I put a protective shell on it, and it goes into a case.) For me, if I want to take a handheld with me, it is either our 2DS, or an old DS stuck in my pocket, just in case. LOL. So our Switch has had a very comfortable life so far.
My daughter has picked up playing Animal Crossing on the Switch again. So no Switch for me this weekend. LOL. Instead I'll fire up the 2DS and play Links Awakening that I just downloaded.
We had a Wii U. So I probably wouldn't buy any of the games because we have already played a lot of the games we wanted. But it is a shame to have games like Yoshi's Wooly World trapped on a console that no one is going to be able to buy new or even used (at a reasonable price). My big want is Nintendo Land. That is the biggest reason we still have the Wii U. If they could make games like Mario Chase, Luigi's Ghost Mansion or Sweet Day so that the asymmetric player could play on their cell phone, I would totally be into picking up Nintendo Land for the Switch.
I'd like to see a VR mode. Or bringing back 2 players in 1 kart like in Double Dash. Or a rally mode where the course can change and so you have to read the direction signs and adapt.
RE: "So it’s teaching me that devices like this, while cute and have novelty, are not for a person like me who desires a low-maintenance and long lasting device."
Yes. And that the games get updated via the Internet, so the game that comes on the cartridge isn't the game you end up playing. So, down the road, you won't be able to get the updates anymore.
So, yes, a temporary situation.
But, my take-away has been, it is about the experience. The now.
I got a Switch to play games with my family. The fun we have, and the memories we build are more important than how long the Switch will be around.
So, I have been getting more into getting the games I think we want now, and playing them now. Not saving them for the perfect time, or a rainy day.
Don't get me wrong. This is why I won't get rid of our GameCube or Wii. These systems and games will (for the most part) be playable in the future. My youngest dragged out all our Skylanders last week and fired up the game. And both my daughters decided to dust off Just Dance 2014 for a few rounds.
Even after we got Smash Bros for the Wii U the kids in the gang would still want to fire up the Game Cube for Melee. LOL. Except when they wanted to play 9 player local.
We mostly use on-line for 2 games. Mario Kart and Animal Crossing. That's pretty much it.
The original NSO is priced low enough that even if you are only using it for 1 or 2 games it is a no-brainer to pick up.
The N64 games look good, but I just picked up the N64 games I wanted to play in either DS and 3DS carts a few months before rumors of the NSO expansion came out.
Well. I hope the Switch lasts a long time. As my kids are getting older, I was thinking the Switch would be our last family console. (We had GC, Wii, Wii U, DS and 2DS.)
But if you are asking what I'd like to see, or what ideas I've got . . . here are a few. Some crazy. I'm not saying any of them make any sense. LOL.
1. Smaller (pocketable Switch.) — One of the things I like about our DS is that I can stick it in my pocket. If I am picking up one of my kids (waiting in the car somewhere), I can just make sure to have the DS with me. I could see a smaller Switch that has the flat joystick of the 3DS/2DS so that you can slip it into a pocket.
2. A more powerful Switch that can do VR really well. But . . . most games released can still work on the OG Switch. So if a game, let's say Mario Kart X (with VR option) comes out, you can play it on the OG Switch. If you decide to get the Switch Pro, then you can play it at a higher resolution or faster FPS. Or, you can play it VR. So you still got a choice. And the game has a bigger audience to sell to . . . the OG Switch and the Switch Pro. BOTW2 could be VR as well! LOL!
EDIT: Oh, yeah. With a Switch Pro . . . there would be a few games that would only play on Switch Pro. But, pls, not the Nintendo IP that doesn't really need it. That way there is a bigger audience that can play the Nintendo IP. But for first-person-shooters or action games that haven't made it to Switch yet because of "performance", then those games would be a natural for Exclusive to Switch Pro.
3. Or . . . people are mentioning a non-portable console version. How about one that is a bit more powerful. You hook it up to your TV and play games. But no using it as a portable. But here are the additional ideas. a) You can some how attached your OG Switch to it, either with a cable or wirelessly, so that all your stats and game progress get sync'd. And . . . . b) We get asymmetric game play back. We can have NintendoLand games like Mario Chase, Luigi's Ghost Mansion or Animal Crossing again!
4. How about being able to play games on our Switch via our cellphone? Sorta like Steam Link. So, you just leave your Switch turned on at home. But if you want to play while you are out and about, you can access it through your phone?
Yeah. Goofy ideas . . . LOL.
But, hey, you asked.
The other thing that Nintendo has said in the past is that they were hoping that the Switch would end up being a multi-device per household item. So instead of one console in the house, it was more that each gamer in the house would have their own Switch.
But OQ2 is the only thing my kids seem to want for Xmas. Mostly for the "exercise" games, like Beat Saber.
I figure . . . it's one of those things. I can wait until everything is perfect before buying it, but by then, my kids will be all grown up.
I've never regretted getting any of our Nintendo consoles (GC, Wii, Wii U, Switch, DS, 2DS), my kids and us parents have had a lot of fun playing the games. If I had waited for the Switch Pro, we would have missed all that game time together!
But also wanted to point out that it's not just "table-top" mode, it is also "car-ride" mode, or "take-the-Switch-to-a-friend's-house" mode.
We went for a ride, and my daughter played Unravel 2 with her Uncle while we drove.
And when she takes the Switch to a friend's house, no need to figure out how to hook it up to their TV. Just set up the Switch on the table, remove the controllers and you're good to go!
It is such a streamline and simple implementation, but it opens up and simplifies multi-player gaming so well.
My wife, kids and I have been playing the same tracks since we got Mario Kart on our Wii U. LOL.
Don't get me wrong. I'm glad they hit the ground running with a Mario Kart on Switch. Not like the Wii U where we had to wait for both Mario Kart and Super Smash. But I personally think the Switch deserves its own Mario Kart. LOL.
I'm surprised, but I actually got all the Wii U titles except the Zelda game.
Only a few of the Wii titles. Not really into the Pokemon games.
For Game Cube, I sold off all the games that I picked up for cheap that we just never got into playing, just keeping the classics RE: Mario Kart, Smash, Pikmin 2, Sunshine and Racing Revolution. (But picked up 50th Namco and Midway Arcade Anthology just to round out the games.)
And . . . I actually went and got a Nintendo 2DS after we got our Switch just to get Zelda OOT and MM to play on the go. LOL. That and Super Mario 64 DS. This was before N64 NSO came out. But even now, I leave the Switch for my kids to play, so its nice to have the 2DS as an alternative. For the 2DS, I actually found a copy of the Super Mario 3D Land and played through that, and picked up Ultimate NES Remix as well. LOL.
Wait until the Nintendo Game Cube Classic / Mini comes out complete with actual Game Cube Controller connectors! Then everyone will remember. LOL. RE: Dreaming.
My daughter and I played through this one on our Wii U. I was chuckling at the jokes they were making of the characters. My daughter was pretty good at figuring out what the heck we were supposed to be doing. LOL.
We also played and enjoyed Lego The Lego Movie, Lego Jurassic World, Lego The Avengers as well. We got Lego Marvel Super Heros 2 as well as Lego The Incredibles for the Switch.
As a couple have pointed out Pikmin Adventure from Nintendo Land is not on the list.
That is my favourite because you could play up to 5 players at the same time. Not so much puzzle solving, but quick levels to beat. Me and my 2 daughters played that together all the time.
Ok. That looks totally awesome. I actually thought someone made a functional Thick Switch . . . like the Long Game Boy or the Wide Game Boy Advance. LOL. +1,000,000 points to the mom for making this!
My fond memory is playing Donkey Kong Jr on an arcade machine at our local pizza joint while I was still in grade school. That and Jungle Hunt. I totally sucked at both those games. But it was a lot of fun.
I said we were still waiting for Wii coming to Switch, but Super Mario Galaxy is a Wii game, so there is actually a game from all Nintendo set-top consoles.
RE: Double Dash is the worst . . . to each their own, but I would rank Double Dash better than the SNES or N64 versions. Double Dash had pretty good mechanics. And be biggest thing for me would be having a 2nd player as the gunner in the back of the kart. This let my kids when they were younger play with us (when they were too little to drive the kart). It was a lot of fun. And even when they were old enough to finally drive the karts, we would still put a 2nd player in the back . . . but they wouldn't be on your team. They would be on the other team, trying to make you crash by bumping you at the least opportune time. Or trying to throw bombs in front of you to crash into. LOL.
This 2nd player in the same kart was only on Double Dash.
If Nintendo brought Double Dash to Switch, I would say it would be a great game to introduce your kids (when they are really young) to Mario Kart. LOL.
And if they bring more GameCube games to the Switch . . . then the Switch becomes a great platform to keep more of the Nintendo Library accessible.
We have NES, SNES, (and now N64 and Sega Genesis), starting to see GameCube and a few Wii U games on the Switch.
Just missing Wii now.
If Nintendo brought out Mario Kart Double Dash for the Switch, I'd probably be in to picking it up. It is one of the GC games I still dust off and play every now and then.
And if they added NSO connectivity to it, . . . that would be a whole-new-level.
As soon as I saw the Nintendo Switch I thought "Man this thing is going to be popular!"
Of course, I thought the same thing about the Wii U! LOL.
But seriously though . . . I thought to myself.
"If they bring out Mario Kart and Super Smash in a reasonable time frame, this thing might have a chance."
That was the thing for the Wii U for me. I waited for Nintendo to bring out Mario Kart and Super Smash before I even considered buying the Wii U. So it was quite a while before I even wanted a Wii U.
But because Mario Kart was available for Switch so soon, we ended up jumping on the band wagon so much sooner this time around.
"The Switch will have the longest life span of any Nintendo console, mark my words."
+1
Hoping so.
But I am typing this knowing that we still play our Game Cube games (although on our Wii even though our Game Cube console still works.), and our Wii still gets used as well.
Not being locked up by an OS going out of date — I'm looking at you Android and iOS! LOL.
I am so fed up of products that come out, and are obsolete in 4 years.
I don't want to have to buy a new phone every 4 years. I don't want to have to buy a new computer every 5 years. I don't want to have to buy a new car every 7.5 years.
It is expensive.
It is filling up our garbage dumps so quickly.
It is using up more of our Earth's resources.
And it is increasing our carbon footprint.
What I am hoping is that the Switch Pro keeps using the same controllers as the Switch and takes the same games. So at least we don't have to burn through more carbon to get new controllers.
And, I'd also think it would be great if they don't completely stop 3rd party from developing for the original Switch specs. There will be some games you need the Switch Pro for, but there would still be some momentum on bring out games that play on both Switch and Switch Pro.
EDIT: Also . . . the bigger they make the user base for the original Switch . . . the more games that will be targeted for it.
I used to use the cheap Ikea shelving to house our game systems. (But someone along the way gave us an old entertainment center cabinet to house our game gear so the Ikea shelving has been giving storage duty now. LOL.).
But my daughter's gaming PC is set on an Ikea desk (with hidden cable channels to reduce clutter). And she has an Ikea office chair.
Cheap. But . . . fairly well thought out and well built.
Most of the Ikea stuff we've bought have lasted a long, long time.
Yes. Growing up, our B&W Tube TV had a handle on top of it. But I would most definitely not have called it portable. LOL.
That and any full-size sewing machine. Those have handles too. "Not" portable in my eyes.
Or the original Compaq portable! LOL. I actually used to struggle to take one of those computers back and forth to work. LOL.
EDIT: Actually . . . now that I think about it. I used to bring the Compaq Portable home from work back in the 80's to play games on it. Things like Zork or Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Text adventure games. A 25 lb "portable" computer. LOL. So, carrying around a small little Game Cube doesn't seem so crazy compared to stuff I used to do when I was younger. LOL.
Our minivan came with an overhead monitor for watching DVD movies. But it also had HDMI and RCA inputs. I totally hooked up our GameCube (and Wii) and we played it in the minivan! LOL.
But ... the last time one of my daughters played a game in the van, it was on the Nintendo Switch. She played Unravel TWO with her uncle.
I am a Wii U owner as well. And, yes, there have been some games that have come out that are mostly the same game I already bought on the Wii U. Super Mario 3D World comes to mind.
My daughter and I have already completed that game, so no interest in us to go through something we already went through for the little additional content.
But . . . the other side of the coin, at least for me, is that there were so few Wii U's out there. So only so many of us got to enjoy Super Mario 3D World. So IMHO it would be a total shame for that great game to be trapped on the Wii U console. I think it totally made sense for Nintendo to let that game be enjoyed by a bigger audience.
On the other hand (and I'm not sure if this is a thing right now), is that if someone bought the game on Wii U as a digital download, could Nintendo offer a discount to buy the same game for the Switch.
If I remember correctly, that happened with some games when you went from Wii to Wii U.
I think I bought Super Mario Bros on the Wii. And then when I got the Wii U, the store offered a discount on Super Mario Bros for Wii U because I already had that game for the Wii?
I had had the Game Boy before our oldest was born.
But the Game Cube was our 1st gaming system as a family.
It was a gift from my older sister. She had heard me say I was looking to get a Nintendo 64 so that I could eventually play games with my young daughter. That Christmas she gave us the Game Cube. (She had already gotten one for her family, with their kids being much older than ours.)
Until our oldest was able to drive the karts in Mario Kart, she had a blast being the weapons expert in the back seat! (What a great feature of Mario Kart Double Dash!)
As she got older, she got better at driving.
And over the years, as our friends (and their kids) came over, Super Smash Melee became a pretty consistent game played in our game room.
Since then, we've gotten the Wii, Wii U and now the Switch.
But I still have our Game Cube. It is hidden away in my workshop (plugged in to hopefully preserve the battery.) TBH . . . if the kids want to play a GC game, they play it on the Wii that I still have hooked up to our game TV. But every now and then I plug in the GC to one of the Tube TVs I still have and play a few rounds of Mario Kart Double Dash. LOL.
We still have our Game Cube. Plugged in to keep the battery from going. But if we want to play Game Cube games, we play them on our Wii (which is hooked up to the TV.)
The kids in our gang liked GC Super Smash and Mario Kart better than the Wii versions. So when they'd come over, it would be the GC games that got played.
That changed with the Wii U. But GC Super Smash still got loaded up quite a bit.
I liked the 2 players in 1 kart on GC Mario Kart. It was great for when our kids were too young to drive the karts, but still wanted to play with us adults.
As our kids got older, we still played 2 players in 1 kart, but the person in the kart with you wasn't on your team. They were trying to make you crash by throwing bombs in front of you, or trying to bump you into objects or over the edge. LOL.
I've been picking up games for our old systems (Game Cube, Wii, DS and 2DS). (Not the Wii U. It is not feeling well. )
Games I'd like to eventually play when I got the time.
I figure, get them now while I can.
And, what good is a console without games? LOL.
For the Switch, I've bought a lot of digital games, but every now and then I will buy a cartridge. Partly so when we finally get another Switch, if my daughter has the main Switch, I can still play a game on the other Switch.
How about a Nintendo Game Boy Advance Mini / Classic?
A separate stand-along unit.
Same size as the original Game Boy Advance, but with a back-lit screen and some built-in games.
Then you have a pocket sized game console for when you don't want to (or can't) take your Nintendo Switch.
Or . . . the perfect gift for a younger daughter / son, or even a nephew / niece.
But gotta' have a Mario, Princess Peach, Zelda, Kirby, Yoshi, and Metroid game. A mix of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games. Tetris would be nice, but I guess I wouldn't hold my breath for that one. LOL.
I tried it out with my daughter and she immediately took to it.
Reminds me of the Pikmin game and The Legend of Zelda game from NintendoLand (Wii U). Two games that we played a lot.
And then friends of ours came over, and our friend's son had already played Minecraft Dungeons, so he and my daughter ended up playing it for a couple of hours.
We are totally getting Minecraft Dungeons, but after we get back from camping. LOL.

Just used some Platinum Points to get an Animal Crossing Keychain. All for visiting My Nintendo every so often.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (February 26th)
Mario vs. Donkey Kong Minis March Again! on our Nintendo 2DS.
Because the 3DS store is shutting down, I figured I'd hurry up and download Minis March Again! and give it a go before I couldn't.
LOL.

For me, none of these, as we still have our Wii and if we want to play an old Wii game, we just turn our Wii on.

But, the game we have for Wii, that I would buy again for the Switch would be Gnomz.

It can be a quick, funny way to combat the other gamers in the room. LOL.

We have a PC. We are considering Oculus Quest 2.
But neither would replace our Nintendo Switch.
We got the Switch for the games it has.
Great Nintendo IP.
And great single-screen multi-player fun!

Re: Random: This Nintendo Switch Birthday Cake Makes Us Want A Thick Switch
Ok. That looks totally awesome. I actually thought someone made a functional Thick Switch . . . like the Long Game Boy or the Wide Game Boy Advance. LOL. +1,000,000 points to the mom for making this!
Re: Bandai Namco Is Changing Its Logo In 2022
IMHO looking at a logo as an isolated design element is one thing.
It is a completely different thing to take it into consideration based on what the company has made it mean.
Sure we can judge a logo based on what it looks like, but I think it means a lot more to judge a logo based on what the company has done.
Re: The Donkey Kong Series Has Surpassed 65 Million Sales Worldwide
My fond memory is playing Donkey Kong Jr on an arcade machine at our local pizza joint while I was still in grade school. That and Jungle Hunt. I totally sucked at both those games. But it was a lot of fun.

RE: "They're very excited to play 64 on the app . . . "
Well. At least that is possible. If you can play against other Switch users on-line, then this will make it all that much more fun!
Re: Talking Point: The Switch Is Following Nintendo's Successful Portable Playbook
@Edu23XWiiU

Re: Poll: Do You Call Handhelds Like Game Boy And Nintendo DS 'Consoles'?
Ok.
I totally had to think about that! LOL.
Yeah. When I had my GameBoy, I never called it a console.
But with the introduction of the Hyperkin Retron SQ, it totally makes it obvious that it is a console. LOL.
Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

Hoping so.
But I am typing this knowing that we still play our Game Cube games (although on our Wii even though our Game Cube console still works.), and our Wii still gets used as well.
Not being locked up by an OS going out of date — I'm looking at you Android and iOS! LOL.
Re: Talking Point: The Switch Is Following Nintendo's Successful Portable Playbook
I guess I'm just being old. LOL.
But I am liking the "longer" product cycle life.
Re: Random: IKEA's Gaming Range Has The Essentials, Like A Mug Holder And Neck Pillow
I love walking through Ikea.
Lots of great ideas.

LOL.
Re: Talking Point: Was The GameCube Really A Portable Console In Disguise?
Our minivan came with an overhead monitor for watching DVD movies. But it also had HDMI and RCA inputs. I totally hooked up our GameCube (and Wii) and we played it in the minivan! LOL.
But ... the last time one of my daughters played a game in the van, it was on the Nintendo Switch. She played Unravel TWO with her uncle.
Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 13.0.0 Is Live, Adds Bluetooth Audio
@avictorao

Enjoy!
My Tube TV is still working. (Knock on wood.) But for when it finally stops working, I was wondering what my options would be.
Oh, yeah. If you have the 1st version of the Game Cube with the digital out port, there is a more expensive (better) adapter available.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/01/hardware_review_eon_gchd_mk-ii_gamecube_hdmi_adapter_-_the_best_just_got_better
My GC is the 2nd version, so no digital out port. So I'm restricted to the (cheap) RCA to HDMI adapter.
Re: Anniversary: Goodness Me, Is The GameCube Really 20 Years Old?
LOL.
Re: Anniversary: Goodness Me, Is The GameCube Really 20 Years Old?
@elhozzo
RE: still got mine, perfect working order ... challenge is to find an old TV to use it with ....
I saw this RCA to HDMI converter that could allow you to hook up your GC to an HDMI TV / Monitor.
https://www.amazon.com/Converter-ABLEWE-Composite-Supporting-Blue-Ray/dp/B07RX69KR8/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=RCA+to+HDMI+converter&qid=1631630323&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=A3NP7PQ5ZA4FEW&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzU0o1RUZMSVhaMVFTJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzI5NzIwMlFJMkdMWk00QkE2MCZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMjA4OTQyVzA5RTBNMjdXUTFZJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
I haven't gotten this yet because I still have 3 Tube TVs in my house.
That and I play our GC games through our Wii that is hooked up to our HDMI TV with this cheap Wii to HDMI adapter.
https://www.amazon.com/Converter-Adapter-hdmi1080p-Connector-Output/dp/B078MGZ56R/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=wii+to+hdmi+adapter&qid=1631630462&sr=8-3
Re: Nintendo Celebrates 20 Years Of GameCube In New Smash Bros. Event
LOL.
Re: Feature: Game Boy Games We'd Love To See On Nintendo Switch Online
For me, the one I hope for is Tetris.
It is a big reason I got the original Game Boy. (That and the fact I didn't have a TV at college, so nothing to hook up a console to.)
Our college had a Tetris arcade machine in the bar. Me and my friends had a lot of fun playing it.
When I got the Game Boy, it came with Tetris.
I'd bring it on trips we'd take . . . and everyone was fighting for their turn to play it on the long car rides. LOL.
But . . . I'm not holding my breath for Tetris on NSO. Probably not going to happen.
Re: Poll: Why Do You Collect Video Games?
I've been picking up games for our old systems (Game Cube, Wii, DS and 2DS). (Not the Wii U. It is not feeling well. )
Games I'd like to eventually play when I got the time.
I figure, get them now while I can.
And, what good is a console without games? LOL.
For the Switch, I've bought a lot of digital games, but every now and then I will buy a cartridge. Partly so when we finally get another Switch, if my daughter has the main Switch, I can still play a game on the other Switch.
Re: Talking Point: If Nintendo Switch Online Adds Game Boy, Why Not Throw In GBA, Too?
@Moistnado
It is an interesting situation.
I got NSO so that I can play Mario Kart on-line. And my daughters can play a couple of their games.
But for me, it's only once every couple of months that I use it.
NES and SNES games included in NSO, for me, means that when I'm not on-line, I'm still getting some use out of NSO.
But, yeah. If you're not into NSO, then it would be nice to access these games another way. Maybe if not individually, some sort of sets or packs.
Re: Talking Point: If Nintendo Switch Online Adds Game Boy, Why Not Throw In GBA, Too?
@Friendly
Yes. N64 games IMHO make sense to sell individually on Switch.
A great way for gamers to be able to access more of the library of a particular character.
As for a N64 Mini / Classic . . . yes. +++ That is something I would be interested in.
I was playing arcade games in the arcade when the NES and SNES came out. So didn't get an NES or SNES. Instead got the Game Boy.
And the 1st console I got was the Game Cube when my oldest was old enough to play.
So I totally messed out on the N64 (except for the N64 games on the Wii.)
Re: Talking Point: If Nintendo Switch Online Adds Game Boy, Why Not Throw In GBA, Too?
@Amrulez,
We know it's possible for Switch to play N64 and GC games. (RE: Super Mario 3D All-Stars.)
So . . . just a matter of time before more N64 & GC games start to appear.
Although probably bought individually. Not NSO.
Re: Talking Point: If Nintendo Switch Online Adds Game Boy, Why Not Throw In GBA, Too?
LOL.
Re: Minecraft Dungeons Is Your Next Nintendo Switch Online Trial
@nintendolife
Thanks for the heads-up.
I've been wanting to try this game.
LOL.
