I couldn’t get into Celeste, but this is a fine example of why indie devs are 100 times better than AAA studios. 100 levels for free must be a treat for people that love this game.
Not sold on it, yet. If there is a physical release, fully patched, I'll try it at some point. Feeling burned from Bloodstained's Switch release so I'm pretty done being part of the "paid beta tester" crowd.
This is why I removed the clips on my SNES that normally prevents Japanese games being inserted. Not only do I save tons of money on games: Mega Man X3: $200-300! Rock Man X3: 20 bucks. But the cover art is almost always better.
@Wavey84 Honestly, I couldn't get into Dragon Quest 8, as it felt way too cartoony. It's a beautiful game, but it's tone is just like a bad 80's Saturday morning cartoon. Some people like that, I guess!
I LOVE the tone of the first three games on the NES. I think they started ruining things with all the weird transliterated accents and such. They make for bad reads.
I can agree about turn based combat, though. These days I can only do it very sparingly, and Dragon Quest games have notoriously been about, "Grind, the Game 1-8," as they don't have much else to offer. I hope you find a good match. I'm hyped for DQ #2, in particular.
@RainbowGazelle I can see what you mean. If you buy a new system, new games should be expected, so I can see why the Nintendo directs are disappointing. For me it’s been the opposite, as I have been hoping for a few more ports, such as Dark Souls 2+3. I hope they release some new games that appeal to you.
No Mega Man X titles at launch of their SNES service is silly. That being said, this direct made me think about their business decision to release the Switch before the next console generations. Such a smart idea. While everyone else is fighting about processing power, Nintendo can keep focusing on doing their own thing and keep riding their momentum. Anyway, good stuff from the direct! I was hoping for news on Bushiden and Cybershadow, but I’ll take Doom 64!
I hope they come to the west! I love Dragon Quest 2, and even having the iphone version, which is based on the SNES version, would be great! I still have my original NES version, complete with a battery holder installed. Good times!
Pretty amazing outfit, great attention to detail! I sure as heck wouldn't want to wear it though; I already run hot enough as it is. That thing would suffocate me!
@KryptoniteKrunch At least for the PS5, it's been confirmed that it will be backwards compatible with at least PS4 games. Now, if they can get it to be backwards compatible with PS3 games or even PS1 games, I'll buy it without question. As it stand, though, I'm happy with my PS4/Switch combo!
@m8e3point1415 It's when Nintendo hooks you up to an IV and directly infuses you with game code so you can just lay back and experience games. Or something.
@Preposterous I was seeking clarification to your poorly-worded comment. The reason I’m bringing up older consoles is because you are talking about longevity lol.
@Preposterous Considering that people still buy original NES and Atari systems, I’m not sure I understand why you are saying that one should buy a Switch because a PS4 isn’t going to be around much longer? What are you actually trying to say, here?
@OorWullie While I’m sure you and many others like Astral Chain and Nier Automata, keep in mind that tastes vary greatly from person to person. To me, a great game is something like Dark Souls or Mega Man or Final Fantasy 3, but even those games that are popular, have people that don’t enjoy them. My best friend in high school couldn’t wrap his head around why I gushed about Mega Man X so much; he hated it. He would rather play an NFL game instead, which I thought was boring. It’s just taste and preference. Sales figures don’t matter, popularity doesn’t matter. All that matters is if you, the individual, enjoys the game.
@Gelantious Not sure where you’re buying used consoles, but I bought all my legacy consoles over the last ten years and none of them are malfunctioning. PCs and their components have the possibility of breaking too, yet there are people still buying parts from ten or twenty years ago and building legacy computers and they work. I’m not sure what you’re arguing here. Yes, stuff breaks, but I don’t think it’s as fragile as you say.
@SegaBlueSky Ah, you mean when people judge each other for being a part of a group, instead of judging the individual on their own merits and actions. It happens. I’ve been training martial arts for 18 years, and I met a lady once that told me I must like violence when I told her I enjoyed training. Of course, that’s silly, as I prefer conflict resolution over just hurting someone, but she was unable to wrap her mind around that. That being said, these sorts of things say more about the people judging you than it does about you. As long as you’re nice, you don’t have to worry about it.
@JayJ I highly doubt the developers at Ion Fury went out of their way to be homophobic. There are people that laugh at jokes of that nature, which is why stand up comedians to this day still use that subject matter. Sure, it’s a cheap laugh, but I’m still happy that game developers have enough of a mild sense of humor to include Easter eggs like that. It’s good for the spirit to laugh at dumb things, is my point. If I hear jokes about white guys, I don’t immediately say that the comedian is cis-phobic or whatever it would be. I just laugh it off if it’s funny, shrug it off if it’s not.
@gumble Console exclusivity COULD be bad for the consumer. It’s also great for competition, which can also be good for the consumer. Maybe the next PS4 exclusive will be a similar game to Astral Chain, and just as good if not better? Plus, sometimes these turn out to be “time exclusives,” so maybe in a few months PC or other consoles will get Astral Chain.
@KingMike The difference between a professional review and an amateur one is that the pro is trying to help curate the chaotic deluge of games that are out. They write about games the way a professional wine taster would describe an aged wine; talking about points that the general user may not even consider, such as level design, tone, graphical assets and performance benchmarks, music, how the story may play into current pop culture, etc. They also have much more practice than the general public, who sometimes write reviews because they are gushing about the new game they like, or bashing it because it wasn’t their jam. Pretty big world of difference, but I can see why it’s not immediately obvious. Have a great day!
@k8sMum You’re good! And you’re right, that’s a valid point I had forgotten to consider. We do have to deal with the so-called “cancel culture” that is so prevalent from all the crybabies on the net. Still, I figured this game would sell really well so it’s just funny that so many people are digging their heels in about it. I don’t like what I see about the game so I just skipped it and moved on. Weird to me that people misuse their voice!
lol at the people who are saying, “I would never stoop so low,” like this is some kind of tragic event. The reviews aren’t affecting the sales or people’s enjoyment of the game. This kind of information shouldn’t elicit more than a faint chuckle at the people who are bombing, cause they are wasting their time. This stuff is funny, people!
@Silly_G I think that might be the nature of games journalism, where rumors like this one sometimes turn out to be leaks or duds, depending on where it lands in the end. As for you, I’m not sure who forced you to click the article but it is listed as a rumor before you even click the article. Just saying!

Re: Japanese Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers Will Face Increased Renewal Prices
@Yorumi Even though the subtext, which is clearly visible before you click the headline, says "luckily, it's not too big a jump."
Re: Japanese Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers Will Face Increased Renewal Prices
@Silly_G lol Fear-mongering? I think that's a bit of an over-exaggeration. Yet here you are, clicking away and even posting a comment. Interesting!
Re: Japanese Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers Will Face Increased Renewal Prices
@thesilverbrick That's what I was trying to figure out, too.

@bro2dragons I say the same thing about Dark Souls 😛

@AstralSoul13 If I remember correctly, NL confirmed already that this is digital only, sadly.
Re: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition Comes To Switch In January 2020
I loved the tone of the game. It felt different and fresh. I hated how it played. Very boring and aimless.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #7 - Star Fox
@Leuke Holy crap that is freaking scary. Thanks though! Made my, uh, weekend?

My custom Gradius III "SA-1 enhanced" cartridge just came in, so I'll be playing that!
Re: Japanese Releases Of Dragon Quest I, II And III On Switch Will Be Playable In English
What would really get my jollies going, is if they ported the PSONE version of Dragon Warrior 7, not that garbage 3DS port.

@BionicDodo Right! So, why not include 3 games from the 8-game collection in the subscription service as a way to tease people into buying the rest?
