After being listed on multiple classification boards around the world over the past few months, Bethesda has now confirmed DOOM 64 for will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on 22nd November.
If the title itself wasn't already enough of an indication, this classic first-person shooter started out life way back in 1997 on the Nintendo 64. Here's a tweet from the official DOOM Twitter account:
DOOM 64 joins the recent release of DOOM, DOOM II and DOOM 3 on the platform. We're sure it'll look fantastic alongside these other three games on your Switch HOME Menu.

Surprise surprise to almost no one? Wasn't this leaked weeks ago?
I have one thing to say: Hell yeah!
Looking forward to playing this, so is it just for the switch or are the other platforms getting it as well
What a missed opportinunity not to release it in 14 years time to get that 11/22/33 date.
For real though, this has been rated by classifications boards already. Was surprised it wasn't a shadow drop for "after this presentation"
Would've been cool as a shadow drop but great news nonetheless
This didn’t surprise me, but hey more Doom is always good news. It’s crazy that you’ll be able to play almost the whole Doom series portably now.
I can't wait to see how it runs, see if it has multiplayer, and just simply play it and enjoy it!
@Heavyarms55 Whoosh
Yes this is the Doom that haunt my childhood, now it'll haunt my adulthood.
Exclusive or multi-platform?
first doom, I've ever beated. can't wait to have it again.
Don't bother unless a 4 player split-screen mode is added.
I wish we knew the price...I hope it's cheaper or the same price as doom 3!
Awesome! It’s like getting an N64 virtual console game!!
Please add an option to make the game brighter - this game went way past "dark and atmospheric" to so dark it was unplayable. It wasn't until the total conversion PC wads that I was able to realize "hey this game is actually pretty good and worthy of being called DOOM when you can see what's going on."
Hell, it’s about time!
Hm, is Doom64 actually not just a port of the first Doom game in the series? I never played it because I just figured it wasnt anything new.
I will be picking this up, and Doom Eternal deluxe edition day one!
@ouroborous No, it's actually a sequel to Doom II/Final Doom with it's own levels.
@Heavyarms55 Yeah but the release date was not known until now.
Please have updated controls!
Hopefully Bethesda.net won’t get in the way again!
Soon we will have 6 Doom games all on one console and that's a very good thing. Hopefully the Quake and Hexen series are next. Duke Nukem 3D as well.
@ouroborous It's a different game, set after the events of Doom 2. It has all the weapons from 2 but with a new look and a new gun that can be powered up. The Doom Engine was also improved for this game so it looks better than ever.
Surprised this wasn’t released cross platform like the Crash and Spyro Trilogies where.
@Coach_A LOL
@GamerDad66 I was doing some digging and all I found are rumors of a PC release, probably through Steam.
@Big_Gamer Cool! I'll have to finally play it then.
The age rating for the Australian classification boards states its multi-platform.
😱best doom game ❤️
I remember wondering why they didn't use 3D mobs instead of 2D sprites back when it was released... It didn't look that good then and sure hasn't aged well.
@wizzgamer It's probably because this was originally an N64 exclusive. What would they call it on the other platform? The reason why it's called Doom 64 was because it's on the N64 just like how Sonic Advance was call that cause it's on the Game Boy Advance. Those title indicate the system they are exclusive to and if they get re-release it would make more sense to release it on the system related to its origin platform. When Sonic Advance got ported to the N-Gage, it change its title to Sonic N, if Doom 64 was to be ported to other platforms that is not Nintendo then it would had to change its title too. Also Doom 64 here is a remastered, not a remake like the Crash and Spyro games.
@ap0001 I just turned the brightness up in my tv aswell. It's a good trick.
Same day as Doom Eternal and the day before my birthday. Pretty sweet.
@ouroborous google and youtube are great resources.
Never had a N64. Finally I can finish this. Thank you Bethesda.
Glad to see this confirmed. This and Doom Eternal on the same day
How is it different to normal doom?
@Scollurio It is a different game. DOOM 64 was an original game, not a port.
@JoakimZ Ah, so it uses Doom assets but has a new campagin, weapons etc... ? Nice one!
Finally! I've been waiting for Doom 64 for forever. I still have my original cart, and i love the game, but there were times when it was ridiculously dark. So dark you actually couldn't see what was happening.
Pretty sure this game was released about 20 years ago on N64, Nintendo life running a bit late with the update
@echoplex 3D mobs probably would have looked way, way worse back then, due to the N64 having to use a low poly count and Gouraud shading. However I heard the PC version’s community has released 3D mods for it.
@Scollurio The assets are all reworked or new. It’s just the ‘IdTech1’ engine (though highly upgraded) that was used.
@joey302 you'll have to wait until September of next year for N64 virtual console. I imagine that's the plan...
@Antraxx777 I hear you, but Duke Nukem was released later that year also using 2D sprites and looked better (in my opinion). Goldeneye007 was released in between and was in full 3D, but animating human mobs in 3D with interchangeable faces was probably easier than aliens.
I do want to give this a try. Never played it.
@BarefootBowser only time will tell... I personally think N64 still makes sense for Switch online, despite the limitations you mentioned.
I can't see a N64 mini though but I hope to be wrong.
@ouroborous it is a new game, it is a true successor to Doom 1 and 2, it has many upgrades and great lighting, all new levels, and still in my book one of the best soundtracks by Aubrey Hodges. It's an ambient soundtrack. One of my favorite tracks has babies crying in the background it is an extremely horrifying track.
@rom_sawtooth You gotta make the sacrifice. Me and my roommate lived on noodles and bread for a couple weeks so we could buy an N64 and Mario 64.
@BarefootBowser I agree the N64 controllers are an issue for a mini console. It could work if they maybe reshaped them and made them smaller but then it wouldn't be the same feel as the original and that's kind of the whole point of those mini consoles.
My bet for the next mini console will be the Gameboy mini but at the same time I can see Nintendo being hesitant with releasing this while the Switch is their main console.
(Sorry to other readers for going completely off topic.)
I never played it so I will get it now!
@Antraxx777 Thx for clarification. Got it on my watchlist now!
Why rerelease a worse version?
Can someone clarify is this actually a good game? I checked metacritic and other reviews for the time and they were not good at all?! Is this just fans wanting the nostalgia or is it a good doom game?
