On 27th September, Dragon Quest fans located in Japan will be able to play the first three games in the long-running series on the Nintendo Switch.
Dragon Quest, Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line and Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation will all be made available on the same day as Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition via the eShop, and will be priced at 600 yen, 850 yen, and 1,500 yen (thanks, Gematsu).
This announcement was made during the Japanese Nintendo Direct, not long after the latest game had been shown.
While fans in the west did get some Dragon Quest news during the local presentation, it was limited to the free Champion's Pack DLC. This will include consumable items and equipment to change the appearance of party members in Dragon Quest XI S. Unfortunately, there's been no mention of the first three games receiving a local release on the Switch eShop.

I so want this but I also wonder how many comments we will see until someone says, “You can get them on your phone”?
Bring them to the west, Nintendo of America! These games are my jam! <3
And I want them on my /Switch/, not my phone. Big screen and buttons, baby!
If they support English I'll purchase them immediately.
PLEASE release these in North America!!! PLEASE!!! Dragon Warrior was my first RPG ever, and I absolutely love it as well as II and III. I really want to replay these on Switch!
I WOULD LOVE THIS. PLEASE RELEASE IN OTHER PLACES
Welp, if Collection of Mana taught us anything, its that anything's possible.
Come on Square, I'd be curious to check em out at those prices even though I never played a DQ game before.
Just beat the first one on my phone and bought the 2nd one, these look so much better on the switch. I would have double dipped. iPhone versions aren’t bad though.
@Thraxmo they are the phone ports
i bought the ps4 version and use my phone to translate the text using google translate and the phone camera.
i wouldn't recommend that outside the first game though lol
the phone versions have horrible controls.
I hope they come to the west! I love Dragon Quest 2, and even having the iphone version, which is based on the SNES version, would be great! I still have my original NES version, complete with a battery holder installed. Good times!
These look super cheesy. Would much rather have the classic NES/Famicom graphics.
They SAY they want DQ to be more popular in the West...then they release the games in a moronically selective way. Square Enix is trying its damnedest to overtake the most hated Japanese game company title lately.
I really wonder what could prevent them from bringing these to the West... The translation was all done for the mobile version... And they don't even need to worry the cost for the physical version since this is likely digital only...
Being a diehard Dragon Quest fan, I’d probably pick these up if they came west. That being said, I’d love it if they did an M2 style release and gave us gameplay tweaks... or even better- let us choose between a few graphical styles (NES, SNES, GBC, etc.) to really make it a good value for people who have played these (amazing) games many times. That’s why I’m double dipping on the DQ11 port, that retro mode blew me away.
I usually don't get excited about JRPG's but this looks pretty awesome, I sure hope it gets localized before long.
I would really like this. I played the first two on an NES emulator and really enjoyed them, especially 2. Currently working on 3, but I would like to be able to play these new versions somewhere other than on a phone.
I hope this a sign of things to come. I would love to have a proper re-release of these games on Switch. Especially Dragon Quest 3. Would love to have all the included GBC content that the Android/iOS version skipped out on.
I'll just echo the same thoughts of many above. This would sell very well on the eShop in other regions and I would certainly buy it day one. The mobile versions are overpriced and hard to play.
I haven't played any of the older ones and I'm very much into Dragon Quest right now. Strike while the iron is hot, Square!
Wow, I really hope these come out everywhere.
I would love to have a Dragon Quest Collection like the Collection of Mana with all 3 games on one physical cart.
I'd like to at least try the first two and have heard that III is a must-play for sure. I'm hoping these make it out of Japan into other languages.
I prefer the NES/Famicom graphics.
It would be silly not to bring these over, but that doesn't mean it will happen.
Kinda wish Square Enix did a whole clean sweep and released all FF and DQ games on the Switch.
I've always thought these games would eventually release on Switch, and they will in the West too. After all, there is the mobile version, and they can do a port from there, as they did with the Final Fantasy games recently. But as I finished the Erdrick trilogy on an Android phone months ago, I'm not in a rush for getting them. I'll do, though, because I want to own them.
I’m not a huge fan of the stylization of these, but at those prices, I’ll definitely be picking up all three on the JP eShop. It’s a good excuse & convenient way to play/replay the classics.
Those ports better not be the fugly mobile versions. Hated those, bad framerates and animations.
Are these definitely the phone versions, or the SNES ones (which were never released outside Japan)?
@Thraxmo,
You do realize you can get these games on a phone don't you.
Wow!! I would love these if they brought them to the states. Man Japan gets all the cool things 😔😔😔
Ive always enjoyed the fact that i have all the dq’s Up thru 6 and 8 on my iphone... but i hate the portrait mode screen orientation. These games start dropping on my switch in the USA, ill be all over them.
Bring these games also to us!
So they are actually HD remakes? I'd of rather had the original 8-bit versions, make this a physical and i'm in.
@Lizuka "DQ3's aged like milk."
Gone cheesey?
Will these games ever be release in Europe on a proper games console?
I think I have worked out, I'm too old to play JRPGs anymore, I dont have the attention span, unless its a game I've played before. It just gets repetitive and I get bored (think this is why I couldnt get in to Octopath)
Me wants!! SE give now!!
Hopefully they fix the cursed belt / ring from Dragon Quest 1 on iOS. I was never able to find it. Its been a few years but I was going for a completionist file. I always found those a little too easily on NES. Lol
Thanks @johnvboy
Fine now bring them here please
Will be buying! At least I can retire my wii versions now. Here is hoping squeenix tosses 1-6 on the system!
@Thraxmo,
To be honest I think a few people beat me to it,but awesome news these titles are getting released on the Nintendo Switch,with all the stuff coming for the console my wallet has run off and hidden somewhere.
Localize it in English and its a buy from me
Dragon Warrior (Quest) was one of my favorite games, and was responsible for my (and many others) subscriptions to Nintendo Power. I still have the player’s guide that was included.
This probably means there is little to no chance of a NES Online release now.
I love Dragon Quest games. But years later going back to the older games.. it's kinda hard to play with the huge random encounters
Does it come with a Nintendo Power subscription?
@Thraxmo well my response was going to be this looks like it’s based on the phone port which was in English so should be fairly simple to bring across. It is obviously much better than the phone ports since the Switch has real controls, it isn’t stuck in portrait and the whole portable/TV aspect. I own all the DQ games on my phone and would happily rebuy them all on Switch. Ideally we get 1-9 but I think it’s more realistic to expect 1-8 (let me dream of the Switch being the perfect RPG machine with all my favourites please 😀)
@Jeaz don’t forget Chrono Trigger!
@Angelic_Lapras_King I would be gratefull for a collection of DQ 1-9 on my Switch but I would love a remake /remaster of the first 6.
I would be happy with a straight port of DQ 7-9 as is, because come on they are fantastic the way they are. If only DQ9 would be released with online capability....
Nintendo and Square Enix want Dragon Quest to be more popular in the west yet don't release these 3 Dragon Quest games with the SNES online games i think is dumb
I'd like to see these release in NA and I'd get them, but truth be told I prefer the old NES graphics
I really hope they release these in the west. That would be great and I can rest the NES for a while.
@Glassneedles I am right there with you on having them all brought over to the switch. I still have my guide that came with the first one and how I felt the first time I saved the Princess from the Green Dragon or when I thought I beat the final boss but then bam.... now he’s a dragon.
@Thraxmo I came to them a bit later with 8 but absolutely fell in love with that and then played the older ones as they came out on DS. I just want a console I can play them all on and expand the already fantastic library of RPGs on Switch.
Would be nice if they released them for us western gamers too. But if they have english text then who’s stopping us.
@Thraxmo Well they are good ports and the ultimate versions of the games.
1) Synthesized Orchestral Music
2) Updated Graphics
3) Quality of life improvements
4) Updated scripts to make the story more fluid
Obviously I would prefer to play this games on a console. Having said that, the first two games are really OLD NES games. The iOS ports are leaps and bounds better than those. I could not care were those games were released. However, DQ III, that is another ball game. I was kind of bummed that it MAY be released on the Switch as I am currently playing it on iOS. However, I noticed it also does not have monster animations. So now I do not care.
By the way, is better to play these games BEFORE playing DQ XI. they connect.
Just like how I don't want to play Chrono Trigger on my phone & hope that it gets released as part of the SNES games coming to Nintendo Switch Online, so too do I hope that these 3 games will come to the West in English on the Switch eShop. Touchscreen gaming is fine for stuff like Pokemon GO, but NOT for epic RPGs or serious gaming. Since these already exist in English, porting over to the West would be easy for Square Enix & Nintendo to do. Heck, they could even release a limited edition physical game card with all 3 games on one card, or go simple and just release them digitally. Point is, gamers over here want the love too!
Let's hope that Roto's trilogy will be released in the West, because I'm also a Dragon Quest fan.
For every game that we seem to prove that there is raised awareness and interest in DQ we continue to get spotty DQ titles getting brought over. After playing DQ11 on my PS4 i'm very much interested in checking out more of the series, and they are not doing a very good job to quench that thirst lol.
Honestly, they look terrible. Wish they would’ve just released the SNES version. Maybe we can get those officially translated via the SNES Switch online service? Funny thing I just replayed all three about a month ago via fan translated ROM hacks.
Please bring this to America. We already have a translation on mobile.
I would love to be able to replay (or play for the first time) these originals. I've loved Dragon Quest for as long as I've been playing games. These would be a fantastic addition to my switch collection.
@Magician They do
@FLEEBS We live in the times of region free gaming, abuse that ability.
@YANDMAN I posted this before the announcement that there is an English language option for these releases. However, it would still be nice to not have to go through the hassle of buying these on the Japanese eShop.
@FLEEBS Yep that's a really big hassle.
