Re: Review: Let's Sing Queen - Makes The Rockin' World Go 'Round

Kochambra

Checking the tracklist, I see that most of the usual suspects are present. But I would have loved a few more epic rockers (Hammer to fall, Ogre battle, ...), fun oddities (Flash theme) or some of my favorite deep cuts (Bring back that Leroy Brown, Was it all worth it, Nevermore, Dreamer's ball, ...)

Re: Rumour: A Tomb Raider Collection Might Be On The Way To Nintendo Switch

Kochambra

I wasn't much of a fan of the classic Tomb Raider games back in the day. The first one was a nice surprise, but every other game in the series felt kind of rushed to bank on the Lara Croft craze that the first game had sparked. I distinctly remember playing TR 2 and 3 and wondering why they felt like they had been developed with less care than the original game.

Re: Community: Check Out 12 Switch Games We Missed, Recommended By You

Kochambra

'The last door' is quite excellent. The game really nails that air of gloom and ominous menace that you find in the classic horror tales of writers like Poe, Bierce and Lovecraft. The graphics are very simplistic, but they use that very simplicity (and some really creepy sounds) to spark the player's imagination.
One of the best horror games I've played.

Re: Stories Untold

Kochambra

I just played through this. The first chapter is pretty great (being a fan of old text stories certainly helps to enjoy it) and the third one is pretty terrible (sorry but learning to use obtuse equipment by reading a manual in an even more obtuse reader, couldn't be further away from my idea of fun).

Re: Dark Knight And Inception Director Shows Off Trailer For His Next Film In Fortnite

Kochambra

@johnvboy "My whole point was not to state you are wrong in your dislike for certain Nolan movies"
I get that and you've been very respectful to my opinion. My objection to the review you quote is how it creates a fake dichotomy (you're either among the masses who revere Nolan or you're one of the few contrarians).
Maybe my problem is that I'm seeing way too much of this artificial polarization lately: People draw a line in the sand and expect you to choose one of two sides. And when you choose a side, everyone in that side has to agree that we chose the right side, and that the people who chose the other side didn't choose it for genuine reasons; they just chose it to be contrarians/to be popular/to get more clicks/because they expect to make money out of it/because they have been deceived/because they don't know any better/because they're idiots. It seems like we're turning everything into a battlefield where there only exists right (our side) and wrong (their side), without any middle ground.
Anyway, that's where I was coming from. Excuse my rambling.
Thank you for the conversation and for sharing your opinions on Nolan's movies. When I posted my first message in this thread, I was hoping more people would share their points of view about them, because I love talking about movies (even in a gaming website).

Re: Dark Knight And Inception Director Shows Off Trailer For His Next Film In Fortnite

@johnvboy "Kenneth said there was a small amount of people who felt that way, did you not read the quote?"
Of course I read the quote; he presents it as an either-or situation: Either you're one of those "disgruntled few" who "despise everything Christopher Nolan has ever committed to film" or you're one of the "countless critics and the movie-going masses at large" that "declare him to be one of modern cinema's greatest visionaries". And like a I said, that's a fallacy. I don't think he's one of cinema's greatest directors but I don't despise any of his movies either.
But going to your point: "there will always a small minority of people that will be determined not to like something that's popular". Well, that could be true in some cases, but I think that making a general statement like "the reason why some people don't like X is because it's popular" is unfair and in most cases downright false. That's like denying the possibility that people with different opinions may have their own reasons, as equally valid as ours.
Let's take 'The prestige', for example. Like I said , I think it's a great movie where Nolan's style works really well for the story. But I can see how some viewers might find it too convoluted, or too cold, or too unbelievable. Or some might even find faults that I just can't see. That doesn't mean that those faults aren't there for them, or that they dislike the movie just to be contrarians or to gain clicks or whatever.
Even if a movie has a 94% approval rating on rotten tomatoes, such as The Dark Knight, most of that 6% of critics who don't quite like the movie probably have their own legitimate reasons for having that opinion.

Re: Dark Knight And Inception Director Shows Off Trailer For His Next Film In Fortnite

@johnvboy "There is a small, militant camp of malcontents who despise everything Christopher Nolan has ever committed to film, and their numbers only seem to grow as countless critics and the movie-going masses at large declare him to be one of modern cinema's greatest visionaries."
So, according to this Kenneth Brown guy, you either agree that he's a master filmaker or you hate everything he directs? Wow, what a sheer fallacy!
You see, that's one the worst part of fandom: For some fans, you either share their adoration for their beloved actor/director/writer/musician or you're an outright hater who uses this person's picture as a dart board. They apparently can't conceive any middle ground between those two extremes.
Personally, I could use adjectives like "self-important" and "superficial" when speaking about Inception. I could also say that I find its depiction of dreams surprisingly unimaginative. That doesn't mean that I hate it; I think it's a good movie, but far from a great one.
The Prestige, on the other hand, is a movie where i think that the combination of Nolan's particular talents and the story he is telling, blend together to produce a genuine great movie. Sure, you could call it "convoluted", but that's part of its point.
So no, I don't hate Nolan. I just hope he does more movies like The Prestige and less movies like Inception.
And I agree with you: We need more ambitious directors like Nolan, Fincher, Wright or Haynes.

@6ch6ris6 Oh, I think he has plenty of competition for that title. But to each his own.

Re: The Original Voice Cast Returns To Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

@King-X "We don't know what their future plans for this are yet but there's nothing worse than playing a game then waiting months for the rest of it."
I think it is highly unlikely that this game will ever get any DLC. It was already a complete game back when it was originally released for the Wii. They've had to come up with an extra chapter for this release, which by the sounds of it, is nothing essential; just a nice little coda for people who already played one of the previous releases of the game. I don't think they have anything left to add to the game, after that.

Re: Hamster's Latest Retro Offering For Switch Is The Horizontal Shooter Magmax

Kochambra

@Beaucine That's an interesting game! Shame it doesn't seem to be available on consoles or PC.
It reminds me of other classic shooters that played with that mechanic: Moon Cresta and Terra Cresta. And I just realized that both were also developed by Nichibutsu, same as Magmax. They used a similar mechanic in all of them: By collecting additional parts for your ship/robot, you get more firepower and a safeguard (if you're hit, you lose one of those parts instead of dying instantly), but you're easier to hit because you're bigger.

Re: Hamster's Latest Retro Offering For Switch Is The Horizontal Shooter Magmax

Kochambra

Wow! I remember playing the ZX Spectrum port of this back in the day.
It was fun, and collecting the parts to build your robot was a cool touch. The problem was that, since the game wasn't really in 3D, when you built the complete robot you presented a much bigger target to your enemies, so it was hard to keep the robot for long. Still, a fine shooter for its time.

Re: That Rumoured HD Remaster Of The Mass Effect Trilogy Might Be Coming To Switch

Kochambra

Yeah, that "HD remaster" thing sounds pretty silly, when speaking about games that where already in HD in their original release.

@Impaler-D In my opinion, the Mass Effect Trilogy is the perfect example of why making such a trilogy was a bad idea in the first place:
The first game is overflowing with ambition and that makes it easier for me to overlook the rather generic space opera setting.
The second game feels much smaller and narrow, which may be the result of Bioware trying to reduce the scope and focus on the core experience. That makes it probably the most accomplished game in the trilogy, but at the price of losing part of that richness that made the first game so compelling. Also, the story feels more like a side story than a proper follow up to what was set up in the first game.
And yeah, the third game didn't grab me at all. It's not a matter of the ending, or whether or not it reflected the choices from previous chapters... it just felt flat and too much like it was a chore, both for the developers and for me as a player.

Re: EA Set To Launch "Multiple" Titles On Nintendo Switch In 2020

Kochambra

Legacy editions galore!
Frankly, it has been maybe three or four years since I last played any EA product, and that was just a failed attempt to make it to the end of Mass Effect 3. With Bioware now developing frigging online shooters, I can't see myself getting interested in anything EA would produce nowadays.

Re: Random: Star Wars Rogue One Writer Wants Reggie On His Animal Crossing In-Game Talk Show

Kochambra

@Rhaoulos If by "fix the innumerable mistakes from ep VIII" you mean "closing all the possibilities ep VIII opened to actually tell an interesting story in the SW universe, and reverting the narrative to the kind of rote fanservice that is Disney's stock in trade", then I'll have to agree with you
Oh, and in ep IX, poor JJ had the impossible work of concluding the Palpatine saga... that he started in the preposterous opening crawl of that very same movie, right?
Speaking of which, @johnvboy you want to know how ep. IX would could have been way better? Don't bring Palpatine back! Just removing such a blatant ass pull would make the movie much more coherent with the rest of the saga, it would make it feel less like a retread, and it would let the writers explore a new status quo: the rebels are decimated, but the empire has lost its head. Maybe we could have witnessed a struggle between two factions led by Kylo Ren and Hux, with Rei and the remnants of the rebel forces caught in the middle?

Re: Nintendo Download: 30th April (Europe)

Kochambra

@wazlon After reading Woodyshoe's comment, I got into the eShop and I figured that the quickest way to access the Neo Geo deals was to list all Hamster games. And in that list, I saw that some Arcade Archives games were also discounted

Re: The Retail Release Of The Wonderful 101: Remastered Has Been Delayed

Kochambra

I personally have no use for a Steam code, but Platinum was under no obligation to give us physical backers any additional codes at all. And I understand that giving each physical backer a code for the specific platform they pledged for would be much more of a hassle, and probably more expensive because of Sony/Nintendo fees.
Just yesterday, I was told that Japan Mail won't ship anything to my country until further notice. So yeah, I understand how difficult the situation is right now, I understand the delay and I'm thankful for the free Steam code, even if I'll probably end up giving it away to a friend.
Keep safe, folks!
