Super Mario Odyssey is a hit, no one can deny that. Universal critical acclaim, a huge amount of social media presence thanks to the photo feature, and yet it feels like Nintendo has only scratched the surface of what could be done with this game's mechanics.
In my view, a sequel or DLC is pretty much a given, and I explain why I'd put money on this fact in the video above for your viewing pleasure.

I'd be up for it.
I figured that was why they released it so early in the Switch lifecycle, to give time for a direct sequel.
Sequel or DLC, I'm in.
Forget Odyssey 2. Give us Sunshine 2, Nintendo!
I prefer a completely new game, even if it takes longer to release. Different mechanics, just like 64, Sunshine and Galaxy.
What I'd like is Galaxy HD near mid-2018, then an Odyssey sequel late 2018.
They have too much putty to just throw it away for some new colors. Its guaranteed and "GOTY 2" is always fun. New Mario (2d or 3d) would be fantastic but that's idealism.
Let’s slap more stickers on the Odyssey! I’m definitely up for it. I just got Odyssey on Sunday. 63 or so Power Moons in the Tank. I’ll be heading to World 4 once I find more in Bonnington. The outfits are where it’s at, and Mario looks great!
DLC has got to be a given for this, who doesn't want more Odyssey. Just give me Boo kingdom and Isle Delfino kingdom and I'll be happy or how about doing a Mario Kart 8 and giving us a Hyrule Kingdom 😉
I think it will be a sequel. The can do a "Galaxy 2" in a few years. This would sell more and be more acceptable to the general public.
I'd also like new customization stuff to unlock for the Odyssey. Such as flags, and paint jobs.
I'd also like a different playable character. Peach would be very interesting with a different moveset, and not to mention she already has a 'Cappy' friend.
Super Mario Odyssey 2 around 2019–2020 would be nice.
Luigi DLC with slightly different abilities or even a real multiplayer mode would be great. Whatever they do will buy it immediatley!
I'd prefer a full on sequel as apposed to DLC but if truth be told I wouldn't say no to either.
A week after Oddesy released I swapped my ps4 for an Xbox one s so I've been having to split my available time between the xbox and the switch.
I have been playing a lot of Oddesy this week and I've just beaten the dragon in the ruined kingdom, I've currently got less than 200 moons so barely scratched the surface of the game so far
You know I've always wanted a game where you can choose characters like Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and that they would all have different abilities. Mario has Fludd and Luigi has Poltergust and Peach and Toad can have new gear as well. You can play as one character and just change out gear or play with a friend local or online and you guys can choose different gear. I may be alone on this one though.
I might be the only one who was very disappointed with the length and scope of the game. I beat it in 12 hours with no difficulty at all, then spent another 18 hours getting to 600 moons. I really don’t ever plan to play it again.
The more I think about it, I don’t even think it would be in my top 5 Mario games of all time. I do hope they add to it, as the game itself was a little light on content, IMHO.
Odyssey 2 - A Fantastic Voyage. Mario gets miniaturised and injected into Bowser's body. He must reach his brain for...erm...reasons.
Odyssey 2 - An Incredible Journey. Mario teams up with Luigi and Yoshi and treks across a huge open world trying to find their way home.
I would love to see another adventure with Cappy!
I don’t know how given DLC is, Nintendo’s recent DLC trend is season passes which are available at launch. We’re what, a month and a half into release and they didn’t say anything? I feel like they’re just gonna focus on advertisement for this game and worry about a sequel later on. That or they’ll put the energy right into New Super Mario Bros Switch
Odyssey has really made me want a 3D Yoshi game. Anyone else agree?
I hope there could be new playable characters, like peach, Yoshi (by himself), Luigi, Rosalina. It would be fun to see if they bring old kingdoms or maps from past Mario games and add onto it. Bring Boo kingdom, some snow kingdoms from Mario 64, different space kingdoms from Galaxy.... The possibilities are endless, or even make a sequal. Would be fun haha
I’d be up for either DLC or sequel for sure.
I don’t think it needs any. Maybe more costumes, as i felt there weren’t enough amiibo ones. Its just a satisfying experience. I kinda wanted more from Breath of The Wild as far as enemies and dungeons, but Mario hasn’t left me wanting.
A cave kingdom would be cool. They could also make a Sarasaland kingdom or have a kingdom that works similar to galaxy physics. So many things they could do, so I'm definitely hoping for a sequel (DLC is fine as well). They could even make new playable characters in an Odyssey DLC.
Both.
Even money says we’ll get DLC within 6-12 months (there’s 1 really obvious omission, aside from a post-Bowser costume), then a full-blown sequel in 2 years (with either Mario Maker DX/2 or a full New SMB Switch in the interim).
I'd love a platforming-heavy "challenges pack", organized sort of linearly. Bunch of warp pipes in a small kingdom kind of thing.
I pick the option that gets new content to us faster. I assume DLC (though I'm sure how involved it is will determine how quickly that would be available as well)
My bet is on dlc. Challenge pack with be awesome. I finish the whole content in a couple of weeks and I'm I am missing it already
I bought this game on launch. One day I'll get around to playing more than 20 mins of it.
I’d be down for a sequel. Give us a “New” 2D entry or HD remake next year, then a sequel to Odyssey in 2019. That would be amazing to me. Oh, and don’t forget about Mario Kart 9. The Switch will hopefully be the first console to get 2 Mario Kart titles!
@kevinlo9 Sheesh you said verbatim what I would say about the game - even the stopping at ~30 hours at 600 moons.
Weird coincidence o.o
I totally agree but why choose we should get both a good doae of dlc and then a sequel
Mario Odyssey will have DLC for sure.
I would say DLC. Maybe 3-5 new Kingdoms, with the option of playing as Yoshi and Princess Peach. Maybe this time the Broodals have kidnapped the Mayor of New Donk City or something like that.
Oh god no!... I fully finished Odyssey 2 weeks ago with all levels fully complete and 999 stars... And I have to say, let down lots buy the game ... I've been a huge Mario fan for over 20 years and this is no where near as good as past installments... No dlc crap and no sequel... Just do a new game with proper power ups and lives!!!!
Wish Ninty would have done Galaxy 3
A trippy, nonsensical world. Just getting all sorts of wormholes and time warps and bizarre colorations. LSD World is what I’m saying.
Got to 790 moons. Great game. Will play a new game again in a few months. Love to see a sequel.
It sounds like some of you want to go back to 2012/13 Mario overload. One of the reasons Odyssey had so much more hype around it was that they showed a bit of restraint and waited a few years. It seems a bit soon to be talking about sequels already.
Imagine flying mechanic - like the SMW cape but in a 3D world!
Sure, there must be a ton of ideas left on the cutting room floor. There are certainly more environments they could explore and capture possibilities. It's a no-brainer.
I thought the fact there wasn't a single boo in the whole game highly disturbing! seems "capping" a boo and going through walls and avoiding lights could make for a fun puzzle or two.
A sequel. Dlc anything.
I'll have it all.
Yes please
Edit just how galaxy 1 - 2 had a gap, I guess oddysse will come like that. Hope not tho
I'd totally be down for this, regardless of whether it'd be DLC or a full-on sequel. Just kind of hope the kingdoms will be bigger though. Honestly, much as I loved Odyssey, I was secretly hoping the worlds would be connected much like how Zelda: Breath of the Wild is one huge open world, and was sliiiightly disappointed when I found out that wasn't the case, and as a result, the Kingdoms actually felt kind of small too, even the larger ones. It didn't take away from my enjoyment as I think it's one of the best games ever made, but it would have been nice, especially since I've always imagined how the Mario world's areas connect to each other when areas aren't connected to one another via just a menu/world map.
At the very least I'm hoping Sarasaland will show up, right along with Daisy. I still don't see why Nintendo is not letting her return properly, although it's still very nice to see them bringing back Pauline! Wonder if she'll appear in spin-offs as playable now too.. would be sweet having her in Mario Kart.
Nintendo still had a lot of Mario to give us:
Super Mario Bros. 5 (a true successor to Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3)
New Super Mario Bros. 3 (a true successor to the DS & 3DS prequels)
Super Mario Land 4 (a true successor to Super Mario Land 2 as Super Mario Land 3 is part of Wario Land)
Super Mario 3D Universe (a true successor to Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World)
Super Mario 128 (a true successor to Super Mario 64)
Super Mario Sunshine 2 (a true successor to Super Mario Sunshine)
Super Mario World 3 (a true successor to Super Mario World 2, this time focusing on Kamek's origin instead of Yoshi and Mario)
Super Mario Galaxy 3 (a true successor to the first two Super Mario Galaxy games)
Super Mario Odyssey 2 (a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey)
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars 2 (a true to sequel to the first game, Smithy joins forces with Mario, Geno, Cloud Strife, and Bowser to fight a new threat from the Final Fantasy universe)
Mario & Luigi 6 (a true sequel to their latest game)
Paper Mario 6 (a true sequel to The Thousand-Year Door as if Super Paper Mario, Sticker Star, and Color Splash never happen)
Super Mario Maker 2 (another SMM with more themes would be awesome)
Hotel Mario 2 (would be great as a mobile game)
Mario Paint 2 (make it the 3DS swansong)
Mario has had plenty of time in the sun, although some DLC wouldn't hurt. But now it's a good time for a Luigi's Mansion 3.
I anticipated DLC from the moment I saw what the game was about. They could honestly keep adding worlds throughout the life of the Switch. I'd like to see Subcon (from SMB2, special appearance from Wart), Sarasaland (from SML, special appearance from Daisy and Tatanga), Dinosaur Land (from SMW). I'd even like if we returned to each of the current kingdoms and went to another locale, such as somewhere in the Metro Kingdom that wasn't New Donk City (Donkey Kong Country perhaps?), for example. Other ideas I'd like are more of the 8 bit sections (maybe even as its own standalone minigame) or all of the minigames playable all in one place. Nintendo literally can make this odyssey WHATEVER they want it to be and I'm sure we'd all be thrilled.
@SanderEvers I meant the Galaxy HD port that is already done and was announced coming to NVidia Shield in China. As for an Odyssey 2 in a year....a man can dream I just wish for something like Galaxy 2 which reused most assets from Galaxy 1, perhaps not in a year but sometime hopefully soon-ish. Both Odyssey and BotW have such amazing engines, it'd be a waste not to reuse them in sequels.
Since it's an odyssey and they've already used real life inspiration — New Donk City is basically NY and the Sand Kingdom is basically...Mexico? — then they could continue that.
**They could use international game developers.** This would have twofold purpose. One, it could give a sense of authenticity to each realm. Two, it would expand the footprint of Nintendo and the Switch, and it could give a toolkit right in the hands of developers.
They are already working to get into China, so imagine if they help Tencent move toward these types of AAA games, as opposed to only MOBA-style mobile games.
Imagine if game developers from Brazil, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Australia, China, India, etc. which all have sizable English-speaking communities got involved directly with Nintendo. It would help them understand Switch and would give exposure to various game developers.
For the consumer? We could scale the Pyramids, go on a safari or swim in the Great Barrier Reef. Imagine Australia's coast with Cheap Cheaps or Mario leading an expedition in the Serengeti.
@nab1 Three AAA Mario games in a year? That’s hilarious. You realize these games take time to make, right? Even Galaxy 1 and 2 were released three years apart, and they used the same assets.
I hate when a series becomes annualized. It kills the excitement and value when there’s a new one every year.
DLC, please!
I don't think we will get dlc. They will go Galaxy route and we will get odyssey 2 in 2019 or 2020. But it would be great to play as different characters like Mario Bros 2.
So far, Nintendo always announced DLC prior to launch. So I'm skeptical of that. Unless its a standalone DLC
@SimplyCinnamon53 there is a 3d yoshi game due out next year
I'm expecting both.
I was shocked last year when Horizon: Zero Dawn released w/o any season pass, and then a couple of months later they announced Frozen Wilds.
I'm surprised Mario has lasted this long without any meaningful patch or update. I assumed something along the lines of "find Captain Toad" like the amiibo added to "Captain Toad Treasure Tracker". Of course find Captain Toad is already part of the game so maybe "Find Luigi" instead. Is Luigi in there anywhere? I don't recall seeing him now that I think about it, not even in the Mushroom Kingdom. So they must be saving him for DLC, maybe like "Luigi Levels' in NSMBU for $20.
And yes then SMO2 in 2 or 3 years like SMG2.
I'd rather have a sequel then DLC, but it's 2017, going on 2018, DLC is a given. Better than loot boxes anyway.
I certainly hope so. I'm typically not one to buy DLC, but I happily bought it for BOTW and will do so for Odyssey. I just love those games THAT much and can't get enough. An Odyssey DLC pack with a new kingdom or two and some new platforming challenges in existing kingdoms would easily be worth $20 for me.
@rjejr At least Nintendo sells us actual short games for money as DLC instead of obviously ripped out missions.
Other companies DLC is inexcusable. Although it's a whole other level at the EA. I keep waiting for a double token night, or free martinis, or a complimentary masseuse something. I mean if I'm going to spend cash for a night under the lights, might as well get perks, right?
Someone mentioned this above, but I was thinking an Isle Defino World where they would include all of Sunshine's old content in glorious HD aaand maybe add in a few new things or too. Too much to ask for? Definitely, but man that would be cool.
@Toads-Friend I thought that was more of a 2D game that had a few small 3D elements? I could be wrong though, I don’t remember the trailer super well.

If they don't plan on making a standalone SM64 remake, they could release DLC that transforms Peach's Castle into the same castle from SM64--with all the paintings and worlds within it.
Think both will happen. I mean year one pf the switch ,and already Nintendo used most of it popular ips.
another Mario game...way to go out on a limb
For DLC I'd like to see Mario dressed up as Indiana Jones or like he did in the Super Mario live action movie, mostly as a nod. I know it's a copyright headache, but I can dream, right?
For sequels, I don't mind one but I'd like to see a remake from Luigi's point of view, with Daisy and Tatanga from Super Mario Land (in his old comic book adaptation) to replace Peach and Bowser respectively.
Keeping with current trends, I'm sure an expansion pass is in the pipeline.
At bout 600 moons and starting to get fatigued. May just do dark and darker side of the Moon and call it a day. Fantastic game but I would rather see a full body sequal in a year or 2. I have a huge back log to get thru but I plan on getting back into it and finishing my quest for 999 moons maybe after I finish a game or 2.
Seems like this is the one of the few games these days that stands well without DLC. I'd rather have a sequel down the line.
@Yosher Speaking of Pauline, I came up with this idea for a cool spinoff with Pauline. Its more a GTA open world type game set in New Donk City. It doesn't star Mario (though he'll be mentioned if course). And its not necessarily going to be as Rated M like GTA as far as the nature of content. But you play a detective trying to solve cases and missions for Mayor Pauline.
they need to release Super Mario 64 on the switch. both the original version and the DS version. as well as an updated HD version with multiplayer options.
@UmbreonsPapa
your game idea seems good.
It's an amazing game, but careful examination shows it could be even better.
I'd love to see them expand upon this new style without having to ditch the engine for something completely new, not unlike how Mario Galaxy's concept was expanded with Mario Galaxy 2.
I really wanted a star kingdom with Rosalina in charge of it but I doubt they will do it because it would be too similar to the moon kingdom. Or maybe not. Nintendo has surprised us in the past.
A sequel would be great. Hopefully not dlc. The only good dlc I've paid for was with Mario Kart 8.
I'd honestly rather have DLC if the next Odyssey game is going to just feature more kingdoms and more outfits. Knowing Nintendo, they do DLC rather well (for the most part).
If they have any intention in making Odyssey 2 as a full-fledged sequel, then they should improve the combat mechanics (Mario can do more than just throw a hat and jump on enemies. I mean, look at 64) and other areas, not just increase the volume of Kingdoms and Outfits.
A sequel? Excellent mechanics that could be used in a sequel game? Super Mario Sunshine says hello.
DLC Pack 1 - 64 Pack
DLC Pack 2 - Sunshine Pack
DLC Pack 3 - Galaxy Pack
DLC Pack 4 - Galaxy 2 Pack
Heart this post if you agree!
I really hope there is another game this gen
Luigi Dark Mansion 2!
i'm betting on it.
@AlexOlney "or if they are, why are they watching this video?"
Alex, I'm sure by now you must know how the internet works, right???
no DLCs, give us Super Mario Odyssey 2 but now with higher difficulty!
@Nono18 dont expect the sequel in two or three years
@NEStalgia "Other companies DLC is inexcusable."
From everything I've read, some of the best, if not the best, DLC was in The Witcher 3 two add-on stories. So don't apply that "other company" brush too wide. Nintendo is selling Mii clothes in SSB4 for 50c each, probably the most egregious use of DLC I've ever scene out side of random pay to win loot boxes. SSB4 has about $100 worth of DLC for a $60 game that wasn't even supposed to have any DLC to begin with.
Nintendo may have some decent DLC, but they aren't above misusing and abusing it, and there are other companies that do it right.
Edit: 6 pages of Mii fighter costumes. Six.

After they said there wouldn't be any. Hypocrit much?

The Witcher 3 GOTY dlc alongside plenty of free dlc.

@rjejr I don't think I'd include cosmetic DLC in with the real comparison. Not even Nintendo expects everyone to buy $100 worth of Smash DLC. "DLC" is probably the wrong word for cosmetics. Technically "DLC" is the wrong word for expansions too. Why don't we just call expansion packs expansion packs anymore? The fighters are DLC. Pay money to get additional core game features (though lacking unique moves, they're almost cosmetic more than core) and the maps add to the game's core content. But the costume packs are just keychains and swag....shiny things to spend a few dollars on if a few of them catch your fancy. They're not abusive, they don't actually add or modify gameplay, they just give you a different texture on your model.
The fighter DLC may be a little abusive but there's only a few. Kart DLC I have a bigger exception to, honestly. There were too many maps that were paid there. Their presence in Deluxe makes that visible.
I have to give a ton of Credit to the way Sony at least previously was handling some of their DLC. Namely inFamous 3's DLC which they ended up selling as a stand-alone game at DLC price (EU even got a physical release.) Then Uncharted 4's 'expansion' is a genuine physical retail release. That's a really cool way to do it, IMO.
@NEStalgia "Then Uncharted 4's 'expansion' is a genuine physical retail release. That's a really cool way to do it, IMO."
Well it was cool, until I bought it for $25, down from $40, and then a week later it was $15 everywhere. Note to self, never shop a week before BF Week. By the time I play it it will probably be $5 on PSN. Backlog if growing way faster than I'm playing. 6 game KH package not helping. But I don't think any of those 6 games had DLC to worry about, so at least that's not a concern.
I would definitely like the idea of a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey. They could come up with many more level designs and the capture mechanic could expanded upon massively given its flexible nature
@rjejr Well that's the non-Nintendo party of the industry's problem with race to the bottom pricing. Why is a game they decided is worth $40 now suddenly worth $25, then $15? Was it never worth $40 and always worth 25? Or are they all in the habit of biting off their own noses? Mario Odyssey is worth $60. Mario Odyssey will be worth $60 next year. It will be worth $50-60 in 4 years. Every other AAA is worth $60 for like 4 weeks and then is worth 45, and then in 6 months is worth $9.99. And Sony wants to sucker everyone into EA style micro-transactions and subscriptions!
I think Mario Odyssey is great, but it felt uneven at parts(some worlds are not as fleshed out as others.) I would love to see DLC with updated versions of Delfino Isles or other classic areas. Luigi character DLC would be amazing.
Omg that would be awful.
Please make Super Mario Galaxy 3 instead (yeah I know, the chances of that are really slim...)!
@NEStalgia "And Sony wants to sucker everyone into EA style micro-transactions and subscriptions!"
Yeah that. It's not a 100% correlation, but I've certainly noticed some relationship to game that have season passes and DLC dropping in price faster and having sales more often than games that don't. Lego Marvel Superheors 2 I swear was on sale days or weeks after it released, it didn't even last a month. Which is what happens when you release near BF, some store is going to put it on sale. But a game w/ a season pass goes on sale to sell the game cheap, then make more on the season pass. Look at the DBZ Xenoverse games. Mario will stay $60 forever if it never gets DLC.
@rjejr Yeah it's a cheap ploy to sidestep the money losses of resale ("piracy" has always been a watchword to circumvent the fact that what the publishers really want to prevent is resale. If you own nothing and just access a license, you have nothing to sell so they control pricing and availability fully.) If the disc being just an unlock key is rejected outside PC, and console players value their discs, but insist that the game is on the disc, fine put the first hour of the game on the disc for $60, then discount it to $20 in a few weeks and sell the rest of the game in six $20 chunks.
I'd rather have a Galaxy sequel. There's too much collect-a-thon in Mario Odyssey.
@NEStalgia Which is why a Mario game on Switch is on sale this week for $40 at Gamestop. Sure Mario+Rabbits is a Ubi game, but that $20 season pass helps to make up the $20 discount. I'm still not buying it though until the DLC is done. I don't think I'm buying anything anymore until it's all done, I'm sick of all of it. Every game these days is an ongoing beta with patch after update after patch. Mario is the exception. But really, it is an exception. Nothing day 1 from now on, it's backlog and $5 game sales from here on out.
@rjejr Yeah I'm kind of with you there..... I've been mostly 3DS and WiiU the past 4+ years. I rarely picked up the PS4 aside from the first party. On the rare occasion I pick up 3rd party Im' horrified at how it's degenerated in just the past few years.
It's like cable TV. When it started you were paying for having no commercials. that seemed kind of cool. Now they just want you to pay for the same garbage of network TV. Why would anyone pay for that?
I think they've boxed themselves in a corner though. Their fast turnovers, value extraction, and constant push of barrages of games has created an environment where consumers, I think, are going to start relying on the back catalogue of cheap games (be it used or Steam/PSN sales/discounts.) And with years of flooded content to occupy people and create gamer cultures valuing older games, they may find new game sales sharply dropping soon.
@NEStalgia oh man, don't even get me started on cable tv. They raised my bill $10 last month, no rate hike, just fees and other nonsense, so I dropped a few hundred channels just to get my $10 back -cutting of my nose to spite my face yet again - and bought an Amazon Fire TV stick that Amazon promotes as a way to cut the cord. And here's how that went for the 4 shows I watch.
AMC doesn't have Preacher off-season
BBC America has mostbshiws, except Dr. Who the 1 I watch
USA requires a cable subscription, which I still have, but not there channel, so no Mr. Robot
ABC which is free over the air with any Ole cheap antenna requires a cable subscription. WTF? I mean what the the... so no Agents of Shield that way
So not only is the cable company screwing me, the channels are screwing me, and Amazon sold me a cut-the-cord device which requires I have the cord for the channels I watch.
The entire thing is a racket. There is no competition, they're all in it together.
Destiny 2 and SWBF2 are still worse though. And games on cart that require you to pay full price AND buy an SD card to download the game. Seriously, WTF?!?
@rjejr Sheesh, I'm so glad I don't watch TV. Ever. At all. Except for once or twice a year for OTA antenna based events.
Sadly gaming is becoming an extension of the same. But it's still not as dismal. I've missed the last 30 years of "cable TV". Last I looked there were no commercials.....one day I found out they had them and never bothered looking again. The entire PURPOSE was the no commercials, to me.
It's just distressing that gaming is following that format now. At least I'm glad I like Japanese games.....Japan, unlike Westerners, isn't comprised of absolute morons.
Back in my day you got what you bought and didn't have to pay more rocks on rocking chair
I rather have a sequel (with higher difficulty), but they should wait a couple of years. Nintendo should first give other franchises some love. By the way: Nice ideas Alex!
@kevinlo9 I'm right there with you. Both BOTW & Mario Odyssey two highly praised games felt meh to me. Not bad games, but I didn't enjoy either enough to go through multiples time. Aside from the Let's Play I'm doing of Mario Odyssey I probably won't touch it again.
A Sequel Should Be Called Super Mario Odyssey 2: Dice City &
DLC Characters Will Be Named As:
1. Luigi
2. Peach
3. Daisy
4. Wario
5. Waluigi
& DLC COSTUMES For Last Games & Levels Too.
@pullmyfinger Hopefully those DLC Packs will include new playable characters other than Mario. What I would give to play as Luigi, Toad, and Peach again...oh, and Rosalina.
Stand by. Be patient. It will come. And, hey, this is free great stuff to an already amazing game.
Try this code for Luigi. Pure madness. Not for the weak
