I don't have a PS4 and Xbox One (getting them next year).
With that said, I've been more than happy with my Wii U and 3DS. Bayonetta 2 was my personal GOTY, and I often think of the console as a 'GCN 2.0' (low sales, but consistently awesome games).
Next year is going to be even better: Zelda U, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mario Maker, Starfox, Splatoon, Kirby, Majora's Mask, Codename S.T.E.A.M, Xenoblade 3DS... And hopefully we'll see Project Zero, Devil's Third and Yoshi Wooly World too!
Losing the magazine sucked, sure. But the website was utterly crap, with misleading, clickbait headlines and shoddy 'journalism' that echoed the UK's 'finest'.
And considering Games Radar is even worse, I won't be holding my breath for this. Pass.
I suddenly got an image of a wise old man just finishing telling a Christmas story to a bunch of kids; "...And that, my children, is the power of IP branding. The end!"
Eh, nothing too sinister here. This was obviously just a mistake - though I wonder if Sony are simply allowed to slap all these characters onto its official site, without going through all the IP holders?
IMO, a Mario movie needs to be like a Pixar one; a film that has heart, and isn't a cheaply animated turd with pop-culture references that only serve to make people cringe.
With that said, I'm picturing a comedy/adventure film with a Studio Ghibli-esque vibe.
Happy birthday Miyamoto-san! A true legend. What more can I say that hasn't been said a million times before? Can't wait to see what other games emerge from Nintendo's Garage teams!
I've always thought that the Golden Joysticks were a joke (along with the Spike Awards). Like the majority of people here, I am simply stunned that ACIII: Liberation won best handheld game. How utterly ridiculous. I can't help but think there was some funny business going on. As a couple of posters have pointed out, GTAV wasn't even released when voting began! How in the hell can anyone think that this is legitimate? IMO, a valid question, especially considering the source; CVG - one of the most untrustworthy gaming publications out there (which is saying something, considering how awful British journalism is, gaming or otherwise).
Oh, and why the hell does everyone like Steam so much? Since when is DRM acceptable on PC, but not on consoles? GOG FTW!
Genuinely shocked and saddened upon hearing about the passing of Hiroshi Yamauchi.
This article succinctly sums-up the man's achievements - which simply cannot be overstated. I know this from hours upon hours of research for my Honours degree. And I know this because he was responsible for some of the happiest moments of my childhood.
Rest in Peace Hiroshi Yamauchi - you definitely earned it. Oh, and tell the gods of luck I said "thanks".
Wow, Atari huh? THAT company knows a thing or two about irrelevance, eh? EH?
Looks at the 260 people before him who made the same joke *
Oh.
Anywho, I've actually been saying for a few years now that the lines between 'handheld' and 'home console' are getting blurrier and blurrier - and Nintendo knows this. That's why it made the Wii U GamePad. That's why it merged the console and handheld R&D departments. I'm actually quite excited to see what future machines the Big N will unleash.
That actually sounds really neat. Nintendo really have built a great little machine in Wii U. Certainly a far-cry from the days of headache-inducing N64 development...
Minor niggles aside, I'm glad this game is getting generally positive reviews. The industry NEEDS more games like this. I'm so sick of grey, generic, over-budgeted, over-produced, celebrity-pandering, DLC-ridden, patch-reliant, 'AAA' interactive movies that most 3rd parties are pumping-out these days. Y'know, the ones that are obsessed with guns n' gore - and last for a weekend.
Wonderful 101 - yet another notch in the Wii U's hat!
Great news for Nintendo - though I prefer to buy retail copies.
@LzQuacker - I agree. I hate it when Steam is used as the barometer for what the eShop 'should' be (along with PSN & Xbox Live).
I have Steam. I use Steam. And Steam is not perfect. The fact that I need to connect online to start a game is virtually a deal-breaker for me. I only get a game from Steam whenever I can't find it on GOG.
How would something like THIS help Nintendo's brands? Poor Sony...
@Decker22 - I'm the same. At the moment, I'm happy with Nintendo & PC. Nintendo is smart in the way it designs its hardware & software; in that they are experiences that cannot be found anywhere else. The fact that PS4 & Xbox One are basically 'PC-lite' kind of makes them redundant, in my book.
I said this a couple of years ago, but I'll say it again;
According to Nintendo Gamer magazine, Nintendo has ¥812.8 billion in its pocket - enough to take a ¥20 billion loss every year until 2052. The company also owns ¥469 billion worth of "premises, equipment and investments" - which wouldn't run out until 2075. Even after all that, it would still have all of its valuable IP to sell before going out of business.
Iwata doesn't believe Nintendo is in trouble...because it is NOT IN TROUBLE.
Nintendo games on phones? Not going to happen, Mr. Expert.
Nintendo has a lot of money. Fact. It is doing much better financially than Sony & Microsoft... yet Iwata and his band of merry devs are ALWAYS in the firing-line. This Nintendoom & gloom reeks of tall-poppy syndrome; because Nintendo is one the oldest and most respected companies on Earth, there seems to be a peverse desire by the haters to see the 'king' get toppled from his throne. It's a petty trait of the human race - and the sad thing is that most Ninty-foes on the internet are unaware of how foolish they really are.
Of course, I'm not saying that Nintendo should be immune to criticism - or that any news of lacklustre profits should be swept under the carpet... but I'm just sick of this double-standard that seems to seep from every news-outlet; even Nintendo's software and hardware seems to receive a constant barrage of mockery - despite the decades-old trend of high sales and critical acclaim.
...Then I step outside, into the 'real' world - and I realise how trivial all this crap really is. Fact is, Nintendo are fine, and it's games are awesome. All this doom-mongering really is a load of hot-air; a fad that will vanish over time.
If anyone here feels depressed because of all the unending negativity, then do what I do; get-off the net for a while.
@yuwarite - Fear of change is very characteristic of so-called 'hardcore gamers', and the games industry (inluding the media) in general. Anything different (Wii, DS, Kinect, Wii U) is usually met with derision, before 'gamers' slink back to their ever-reliable twin-stick joypads and clicky-clicky mouses - playing the same old games with slightly shinier graphics. And people wonder why the industry is imploding...
Honestly, I think 3D World is going to be a lot better than people are expecting it to be.
Not to toot my own horn, but I'm basing this on my 'gamer's intuition' that has served me well for 25 years. I can just tell that this Mario game is going to be a cracker. It may not seem as epic or bombastic as Galaxy... but don't be fooled by 3D World's seemingly understated approach - Nintendo knows what it's doing.
@46 - Don't judge the breadth a game's content based on its file size.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 used only 1.5g of a 9g Wii disc, whilst its predecessor used over 3g. Yet, a game like LEGO City used 22g - and no-one would accuse it of providing an insane amount of content; especially compared to GTAV, which will fit on a tiny little Xbox 360 DVD.
In comparison, MGS4 used a full 50g of a dual-layer Blu-ray disc. While that game had a lot of content, the main reason it was so large was because uncompressed video and 7.1 audio.
Just because a game's file size is relatively small - it doesn't mean the game's actual content follows suit. It's all about smart programming. After all, how else could Nintendo have fit so many huge games on those little 1.4g GCN discs?
Every time Sakurai talks about his design philosophies regarding Smash Bros, I'm once again reassured that the series is in capable hands. He definitely knows what he's doing.
I think DLC is great for games like Mario, where plot comes second to gameplay, and where the games can be played in bursts. They are 'gamer' games, if that makes any sense. Like toys that you can have fun with.
However, I see Zelda as more of a 'purer' experience; a refined piece of software that should not be compromised in any way. I liken it to a 'walled garden'; where the finished product should not be tampered with or altered. Like a classic book, every Zelda story should stay the same for everybody, and not be tarnished by a desire to make a quick buck through some arbitrary add-on.
EDIT: Honestly, I'm sick and tired of the DLC obsession that is plaguing the games industry at the moment. It seems like Nintendo are the only ones who know how to do it properly.
I have no doubt this game will be awesome fun. It's a real looker too.
Still, I can't help but be disappointed at how conservative it looks so far. Every 3D Mario game has been wildly different from the last (aside from Galaxy 2, obviously), so Mario 3D World comes across as a bit of a bitter pill to swallow ATM. I think I'll be happier once Nintendo (hopefully) confirms the return of an orchestral score, as well as crazier levels that really burst with imagination. Also, I really hope the game has a lot more content than 3D Land - especially considering the 25g capacity of the Wii U discs.
