Miyamoto-san's thoughts seem to echo the recent comments of Warren Spector.
I don't think he's saying violent 1st/3rd person shooters can't be fun (Metroid & Goldeneye should attest to that), or that they don't have a place in gaming - but rather, this obsession over guns 'n gore has taken mainstream gaming hostage (which I agree).
So many games these days feature a generic hero with a buzzcut, who is likely named 'Jack Mason' (or something), and who is funneled down linear environments packed with shallow, Hollywood-aping set pieces. Oh, and there is always a chick who provides support over the radio. And the game is powered by Unreal 3.
It's understandable in a way - development costs are skyrocketing, and publishers need a sure-thing that will sell. And mindless violence sells, apparantly. However, non-violent IPs such as Mario, Wii Fit, Pokemon, Guitar Hero and Angry Birds prove that there is a market out there for those kinds of games. Additionally, even creative titles such as Minecraft, Fez and Heavy Rain can be respectable sellers.
Like many others here, I'm not surprised by Sakurai's latest remarks in the least.
Actually, I'm glad that he's making it known that people shouldn't get their hopes up for Smash Bros. U being released in the next couple of years. I want Nintendo to take their time with the game (just like their other 'big' franchises) and let Miyamoto (and others) introduce brand new games and franchises.
We all know there will be a new Mario, Zelda, Metroid, SSB, etc. for the Wii U (and 3DS). It's funny - people are always at the Big N's throat for milking their franchises - yet that's what most continue to clamour for. Yes, I too want to see their latest blockbusters, but I also want to see bold new experiments, such as Steel Diver, Pullblox, Freakyforms and Dillon's Rolling Western.
Additionally, I'm glad that both Sakurai and Iwata realise that the new Smash Bros. can't just be more of the same - it needs to evolve. I can't wait to see how the game works with the Wii U and 3DS.
The real-time inventory management is a great idea (even though it DOES remind me of the terrible Alone in the Dark), which should really up the tension.
@Dauntless - You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. First of all, most (if not all) of the Wii U games Nintendo has shown at E3 will be available at or near launch - games like NintendoLand and Game & Wario are designed as introductions to the Wii U GamePad. You are comparing these titles to Gears, Halo, Uncharted and Killzone - titles that weren't released until well into their respective console's lifespan? I like how you completely ignore other Wii U games like Pikmin 3, NSMBU, and SSB U.
I also like how you ignore the AAA games Nintendo released on the Wii, like Mario Galaxy 1 & 2, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Other M and SSB Brawl (to name a few).
I've finally gotten stuck into The Last Story and - roaring JRPG clichés aside - I'm finding it to be a great game. Heck, my first session was 5 1/2 hours, and I only turned it off because wrestling was on!
It will be awesome, and will once again prove the haters wrong.
The world will keep spinning.
Seriously; all this talk about being a 'stop gap' and having insufficent power is just so incredibly tiring. When it comes to sheer horsepower, it will NEVER be enough. There is always something in the horizin that packs just a little more oomph - whether it's PS4/Nextbox, or the latest PC rig...it just never ends. Yes, graphics are nice - yes, AI is wonderful - yes, bigger gameworlds are rad...but people just need to stop obsessing over raw numbers so much, and focus more on the heart and soul of videogames; fun.
Wii U will rock. I can't wait to try out the GamePad - interacting with games on the TV, playing them in their entirety on that 6.2 inch screen, and immersing myself in new worlds.
"We were also under the impression that this was a Wii U exclusive, prompting the team in Nintendo Life Towers to talk about it being a 'scoop' and major boost for the system."
I don't mean to sound like a duck...but that was some pretty shoddy journalism right there.
I was always sceptical about Rayman's Wii U exclusivity, simply because I never heard it directly from Ubisoft...still, it just means more people get to play it - and more sales for such a creative title can only be a good thing.
Meh. Personally, I'm not all that fussed. I'm not a big online gamer (prefer local multi-player).
Still, people are overreacting. Iwata had said time and time again that online is a central point of focus for Nintendo - they know what they're doing. I think people simply view PSN and Xbox Live as the barometer for a quality online service - and as such, will view Nintendo's (potentially) alternative (read: different) service as a failure - even though it'll most likely be a heck of a lot of fun (as shown by Miiverse).
Seriously, just chill and enjoy the Wii U for what it is - yet another awesome Nintendo toybox.
@27 - Yeah, but if Nintendo don't change the Zelda formula, people will complain about the series becoming stale. A little from column A, and a little from column B, IMO. Skyward Sword is a great example.
@31 - Thank god, someone gets it! Miyamoto is not saying Zelda should regress into Wii Fit/Sports/Music - but rather, he desires as large an audience as possible. Contrary to what many may think, he has ALWAYS thought like this with his games.
@37 - The DS games were horrible? Someone should've told that to everyone who gave them glowing reviews...
@49 - I didn't know you played NintendoLand! How was it?
@3 - To be fair, Molyneux isn't with Microsoft anymore...but I see your point. Nintendo are always damned when it comes to new ideas (not that two screens ARE a new idea, Mr. Molyneux), but when Sony, MS or Apple incorporates similar tech to their devices - well then, they are just the bee's knees, aren't they?
@11 - I'm not afraid to say I hate Apple. To paraphrase Kripke from Big Bang Theory, they suck the big hairy meatball
@41 - Oh dear. While MS might have more money in the bank than Nintendo, the Japanese company BY FAR make more profit with its gaming hardware and software. Not to mention MS is being trounced by Apple in other fields.
Oh, and I'm surprised you didn't mention Sony...but I can't blame you
@JimLad - "They've completely forsaken their core franchises and core fans. I'm not waiting for another Mario Kart or Animal Crossing or minigame collection. They just don't seem to put the same effort into their games anymore. It's all cheap and cheerful looking bull****, re-used graphics and re-used game engines."
Congratulations! This is the dumbest thing I've read all day. In case you've been living under a rock, Nintendo have ALWAYS been "cheap and cheerful"; that's kinda their MO...sorry you don't like it.
Completely forsaken their core franchises and fans? Why, because they didn't show Starfox or F-Zero? Newsflash bub, Miyamoto has already been talking about a new F-Zero game for Wii U. Besides, games like Wii Fit and Just Dance have every right to exist; Nintendo games are for everyone, not just the 'core'.
Also, since when has Nintendo ever faltered in their output? Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 ae some of the most critically acclaimed games of all time - so is Skyward. Sword. Oh, and more recently, there's been Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 and Kid Icarus; as well as ORIGINAL creations such as Pullblox, Rolling Western and Freakyforms. Yeah, the company's REALLY on a downward slide...
@BudrSbastig - "The sad sad truth is, that Wii u will be nintendo's last home gaming machine"
No, wait, THIS is the dumbest thing I've read all day. The Wii U will be Nintendo's last console.
Like the GameCube was. And the DS. Ad the Wii. And the 3DS.
Sorry to burst your bubble kid, but Nintendo is comfortable financially - they're not going anywhere.
@Mickeymac - "However, the best games for the Wii supported the Classic controller".
Mario Galaxy?
Zelda?
No More Heroes?
Metroid?
RE4?
Zack & Wiki?
EDIT: @WaveBoy - I was actually annoyed at Randy Pitchford when he said that the Wii U Pad was the best controller ever made by Nintendo for 1st person shooters.
Let's see, which input method most accurately captures the sensation of firing a weapon?
A) A PC Mouse; where one clicks a dinky little button rapidly and slides the peripheral around a mat...
B) A Joypad; where one twiddles a thumbstick and pulls a trigger/shoulder button...
or
C) A Wii Remote; where one PHYSICALLY POINTS AT THEIR TARGET AND FIRES!
I'm not big on the whole 'social media' thing, but it's awesome to see Nintendo still presenting innovative ideas in regards to online - and not just simply copying PSN/Xbox Live.
@player310 - I was actually thinking of this before... I can't wait to see (eventually) how amazing the Wii U 3D Mario platformer will look like...considering it'll likely be totally different from Galaxy, it would be insane! What kind of fantastical gameplay and/or worlds are Miyamoto and Koizumi cooking up? I wanna know!!!
As for Zelda, imagine if Nintendo introduces a totally new art style for the series' HD debut? Not 'realistic' nor 'toon'...but something else entirely? What would people say if Link made his Wii U debut as, say...a Japanese water colour painting? A claymation-inspired adventure? Or even a chanbara-style play (as a homage to the inspiration behind Z-targeting)?
Oh, and a Metroid that looks like Alien: Colonial Marines...
Zelda games are designed as one big epic adventure. Being 'episodic' is the last thing it should be. Sorry to sound harsh, but this was an utterly pointless article.

I also agree what Molyneux regarding the Wii U (and this is coming from a massive Nintendo fan). Though I cannot wait for the console, I do think Nintendo could have done a better job at keeping the games media informed about various aspects of the machine (power, games, online, etc.).
On the other side of the coin though, I can see Nintendo's predicament; they were basically forced to unveil an unfinished project at last year's E3 thanks to the unrelenting rumour-mongering of websites.
@Hyperstar96 - Ummm, Megaman and Zero were in the trailer - at about the 1:00 mark.
@zenarium - Obviously your "experience in the world of videogames" consists of watching trailers and 'imagining' the actual gameplay parts. Hey, I just watched the Black Ops 2 trailer the other day, and I have come to the conclusion that it's a platformer for 6 to 10 year olds!
Interesting...Wii had 'evergreen' titles such as Wii Fit, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Mario Kart Wii.
Iwata seems confident that Nitendo's own software on Wii U will have the same amount of longevity, sale-wise...I just hope that Nintedo will still satisfactorily cater to those of us who like to buy their games on day one, and not just let us twiddle our thumbs whilst we wait for the next big release...
I doubt it though. Besides, even if that was the case, hopefully the 3rd party software will be as good as Nintendo promised!
@verymetal - If Zelda ever became like Skyrim, that would be a dark day.
Skyrim is a buggy and poorly-made mess of a game, with ugly textures and NPCs that looked as if they came out of a microwave (and are all voiced by what seems like 3 voice actors). That fact that title won multiple Game of the Year Awards is a damning indictment of the gaming media in general, IMO.
If people don't like the Skyward Sword, of course that's fine. But at least Nintendo actually inject their games with heart, creative whimsy, and are unafraid of doing something different (damed if they don't, damned if they do). I'm also glad people are enjoying Skyrim...but I personally cannot, knowing how lazy Bethesda have been in QA testing. Ask a PS3 owner.
@Sony_70 - Zelda games are made by Software Development Group 3; EAD Tokyo 1 makes the main Mario games.
Interesting...if the goal of 10 million is 'conservative', could that somehow hint at the cost/profit of the Wii U? Maybe those recent rumours about the expense of the system's components aren't so easy to debunk...

However, I will say that NintendoLand could be a lot better than it seems. I found myself oddly drawn to it.
