Re: John Leguizamo: We Were Pioneers With The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Kage_88

I'm one of the 11 people on Earth that liked this film.

I guess that could be attributed to the fact I was only 5 or 6 when I first saw it; but I sometimes I watch it when the mood takes me, and I still enjoy it quite a bit.

Some of the dialogue is surprisingly sharp ("Sir, the Goombas are dancing again..."), the SFX and set design were amazing for the time, and I found Hoskins and Leguizamo to be really likeable with great chemistry.

Oh, and Dennis Hopper was the best Bowser (Er...King Koopa) ever.

EDIT: And another thing. I've never understood why the film got so much hate. I always thought it was a delightfully twisted take on the Mario universe.

EDIT 2: I also have that Luigi figure. I think I've had it as long as the movie itself's been out...

Re: Consumers Go Crazy For Wii U Following Xbox One Reveal

Kage_88

Well what a surprise - the Wii U is making a comeback!

I'm guessing Pachter is stuffing his face full of pizza out of sheer sadness - brought to you by the Pizza Hut Xbox App!

@Peach64 - I don't think it's so much as 'sales' that this story is emphasising; but rather the surge of interest in the Wii U right after the awful Xbox One reveal. It could be an indication that those who waited for Microsoft's reveal have made-up their minds, and are now flocking to the Wii U and/or PS4 - which can only be good for Nintendo and Sony. But you're right about the sales; only time will tell if the Wii U can sustain such momentum. Post-E3 will be a particularly pivotal time for Nintendo.

Re: Former Rockstar Producer Considers the Challenges Facing Home Consoles

Kage_88

At the risk of sounding like a broken record here...

... but this is why I'm glad Nintendo are always innovating, and never standing still. If you do the same thing over and over, then the industry is going to stagnate and implode. This may piss-off the so-called 'hardcore' gamers, but experimentation is needed to keep the marketplace fresh; whilst pushing gaming into exciting new territory. This is what I loved about DS and Wii, and Nintendo are continuing this trend with 3DS and Wii U. This is also why I'm sick of Sony and Microsoft doing the same thing over and over, whilst Western developers never seem to stop banging-on about polygons, shaders, RAM, tesselation, CPU, GPU, etc. etc... it's so painful. Publishers and developers have been shutting-down left and right, because of this 'moar powr' obsession (IMO). Returns are diminishing, yet it seems they still haven't learned their lesson; what with talk of PS4 & Xbox One being the 'true' next-generation, whilst the Wii U is literally (thanks Mark Rein) being laughed at.

But hey, who cares about wonderful games like Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 when the PS4 can accurately render the pores on Nathan Drake's nose?

Re: Poll: Do You Follow and Watch Rival Console Reveals?

Kage_88

Yes, I follow news about Sony and Microsoft. Even though I'm a huge Nintendo fan, I still love ALL gaming consoles.

With that said, I was very unimpressed with the Xbox One. It looked to be another PS4 - essentially - which is what I was worried about. Once again, Sony and Microsoft are copying each other, whilst Nintendo are differentiating themselves with unique hardware.

Sigh.

Re: Senior EA Employee Caught Out Criticising Wii U On Twitter

Kage_88

EA really is an awful company, isn't it? After all the crap it has put people through and the insanely-bad decisions it has made, this Bob Summerwill dude has the gall to trash Nintendo?

I cannot believe the stupidity of some of these industry "professionals". With loudmouths like Phil Fish and Adam Orth, I'm getting more and more tempted to stop buying western games all-together (obviously I won't...but goddamn, I don't see Japanese devs being this ignorant and annoying).

After seeing the latest Nintendo Direct, I really could not care less about EA's generic and buggy titles (not that I did before). As more of these anti-Nintendo stories are published, the more I'm convinced that EA are simply bitter about Nintendo's refusal to bend-over backwards for them.

Summerwill says that Nintendo still thinks "it's 1990" and that is should have "done a SEGA". What kind of crap is this? This is something that I would expect from an uninformed internet nitwit, not a senior designer at one of the world's largest game companies. Has he even SEEN Sega lately? The company is a shadow of its former self, not to mention the rough shape that Sony and Microsoft are in:

http://playeressence.com/microsoft-and-sony-are-closer-to-going-third-party-than-nintendo-lets-get-the-facts-straight/

Yeah, Nintendo really are "walking dead", aren't they?

He then says Nintendo should stop faffing about, and just focus on making "great games". Um...hello? Nintendo has been doing this for 30 years. It has never stopped. Luigi's Mansion 2? Fire Emblem? Mario Bros. U? eShop? Hello? Anyone there?

The only somewhat accurate thing he says is in regards to 3rd party revenue...but EA aren't exactly making things easy for themselves. On Wii U, They release Mass Effect 3 - instead of the trilogy pack, and a half-assed port of FIFA '13...and the suits wonder why sales are poor?

Jesus.

Re: UK Mainstream Newspaper Declares 3DS The "Best Console Ever"

Kage_88

The Sun is pure garbage.

Remember the crap they printed about the 3DS when it first launched?

Typically terrible British media.

EDIT: Still, I love all the positivity surrounding a handheld that was declared 'dead' a couple of years ago. Nintendo haters really are stupid, aren't they?

Re: Precursor And Nintendo In "Constant" Contact Regarding Eternal Darkness Successor

Kage_88

Denis Dyack's involvment concerns me...but I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm ignoring his recent troubles with Silicon Knights, and focus on the fact that he helped design the awesome Eternal Darkness and Twin Snakes. I can't wait for this game, and it's great news that Nintendo is actively involved with its development.

@MiNiStRy & Melkaticox - There could be numerous reasons why Nintendo chooses not to take over the project. It could be Dyack's iffy history. It could be that they have no available resources (or don't want to lend any). It could simply be a financial issue. Nintendo makes "bad decisions" with their games? How do you figure?

Re: Profile: Kazumi Totaka - The Man Behind Animal Crossing's K.K. Slider

Kage_88

@bezerker99 - What an insightful and witty comment.

I always thought Wii Music was a misunderstood gem. People went into the game thinking it should've been like Guitar Hero or Rock Band; when in reality it was meant to be an interactive toy - Miyamoto did not want it to be a 'conventional' videogame.

I hope they release a sequel. Yeah, I said it.

Oh, and Totaka's a legend.

"Yabbo-Yabbo! Hoo-Hoo! Ohhohohohoho!"

Re: Feature: Ten Smartphone and Tablet Games We'd Like to See on Wii U

Kage_88

Meh. I don't really care for smartphone games, but it would be a definite boon for Nintendo if they can get these titles on the Wii U (or 3DS) - particularly if they can retain similar pricing. Indeed, even I would consider playing them if the developers decide to take advantage of the Game Pad's buttons for the action-based games (none of that shoehorned touch screen rubbish).

Re: CNN Money: Nintendo Is "Tone Deaf" To Industry Trends And Has "Lost Touch With Reality"

Kage_88

Holy crapola. There are so many stupid things this guy says, it's just not funny.

Let us begin...

1). "Covert cites the company’s less-than-expected sales of Wii U consoles as a symptom of its failure to keep up with gaming trends."

Remember when the 3DS underperformed when it first came out? Remember when it died and bought Nintendo down with it? No, me neither...

But wait! Sony are WAY ahead of the curve compared to Nintendo! That's why the Vita has been selling like hotcakes! Oh hang on...

Well, we DEFINITELY know that Microsoft are are WAY ahead of Nintendo's outdated ideals! What with the rip-roaring successes of Vista, Zune, Windows Phone, Windows 8 and Surface...

I can't wait to see what the excuses are when the PS4 and Next-Xbox sell less than expected too...

2). "According to Covert, Nintendo’s history of reluctance in embracing concepts such as online features and digital distribution as quickly as its rivals is hurting it today. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata’s openness toward microtransactions and subscription-based models is also criticized as something gamers don’t want to see in their modern consoles"

Yeah, Nintendo have NO IDEA in regards to online gaming. That was sarcasm, by the way. I mean, they've only been experimenting with internet gaming since the NES days...In fact, every Nintendo console has been online capable in some form or another.

3). "For decades now, it has been this type of thinking that has plagued Nintendo: The company is cognizant of the latest trends and shifts in gaming, but it chooses to disregard them in the name of simplicity, or family-friendly gaming. Instead, Nintendo frequently opts to develop its own warped, counterintuitive take on the latest trends."

Exactly, And this is why they've been so successful for so many decades. They are leaders, not followers. They set their OWN trends. The amount of innovative hardware and software that has come from Nintendo has simply been unmatched, because they dare to be different.

4). "The Wii is admitted by Covert to be a time when one of Nintendo’s “warped” ideas really took off. But where Microsoft and Sony are seen as turning their consoles into “full-blown living room computers,” the Wii U is seen as a floundering sign of Nintendo still refusing to follow trends as closely as it should"

Consoles trying to emulate PC gaming is NOT the right direction for the industry. Consoles are meant to be an alternative to computer gaming rigs; to provide simpler, less-intimidating experiences that pushes gaming into new avenues. Nintendo realised this with the Wii, and they've continued this philosophy with the Wii U. What is the point of consoles becoming PC-wannabes, when one can simply use an actual PC instead? Indeed, right now I see no appeal in getting a PS4 or Next-Xbox, when I already have a powerful gaming laptop. However, I still want to use Nintendo's devices, because I know they provide experiences that I can't get anywhere else.

5). "Some new Wii U features, like the touchscreen-equipped controller feel convoluted, and less innovative compared to technologies like Microsoft's Kinect camera."

Kinect is more innovative? The camera system that is often derided for being inaccurate or even flat-out broken? Right...

6). "Nintendo games that actually take proper advantage of the motion gaming tech aren't coming from third-party developers"

I actually had to do a double-take when I read this. Is Mr. Covert even AWARE that Square-Enix is currently in the crapper, financially? Surely he had to have seen the news about massive losses and booted presidents...right? How do these 'journalists' GET these jobs? Christ.

In closing, Nintendo rulez - Covert Droolz.

Re: Epic Games Rules Out Unreal Engine 4 For Wii U

Kage_88

Once again, my theory of developers/game journalists creating and perpetuating a gaming culture that discourages creativity and innovation in favour of 'moar powr' and the same tired, old concepts is further supported by this atrocious example of 'industry professionals'.

I've always hated Mark Rein and his 'grafix'-obsessed cronies at Epic. Much like id, they are peddlers of mediocre middleware. They are not game designers. All they care about is cramming more and more components into games machines; because power = quality (evidently). Their snickering at Nintendo is utterly embarrassing on their behalf, and reeks of cocksure morons who sit upon their ivory tower, seemingly oblivious to th fact that their attitudes and philosophies regarding power have led to the spiralling costs of game development - as evidenced by the closure of over 120 studios this generation, not to mention the massive losses suffered by Sony and Microsoft.

Rein seems sure of himself about the success of Unreal 4. However, their are now many more engines vying for the attention of developers; we have the CryEngine 3, Luminous Engine, Anvil Next, Frostbite 2, Avalanche Engine 2, Source 2, the Fox Engine (which looks WAY more impressive than UE4 - AND it's on current gen consoles), and of course, the Unity Engine - which is being supported by Nintendo themselves.

http://mynintendonews.com/2012/04/26/warren-spector-scared-of-next-gen-costs-praises-nintendo/

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2012-11-13-epic-expects-next-gen-game-costs-to-double

Seems like even Epic can't get their own priorities in order...

Re: Talking Point: An Open Letter To Nintendo

Kage_88

Hmmm, while I do see this dude's (dudette's?) point, I think this letter is more of a good old whinge than anything.

However, recent events have not painted the future of the Wii U in a positive light - at least in terms of 3rd party support. I was gutted when I found out that MGSV was not confirmed for Nintendo's console - as I'm sure many other were with titles such as Battlefield 4, Crysis 3, Dead Island: Riptide, MGR: Revengeance & Metro 2044. Also, let's not forget the EA & GDC debacles, where it seems like devs are only all too willing to dismiss the Wii U. Oh, and the lacklustre sales.

Despite all this, I think it is simply too early to stick a fork in it. The release of Monster Hunter Tri HD alone boosted the console's sales by 125% (if I remember right). I said this before, and I'll say it again; when Nintendo shows its big guns at E3, all this doom and gloom will seem like ancient history.

Re: UK Gamers Rate Wii As "Best Ever" Console

Kage_88

Genuinly surprised and delighted at this result.

Of course, I can imagine the knee-jerk reaction by the internet. Wii is for teh cazuals and all that.

Instead, I'm going to focus on WHY is was voted no.1. The Wii helped change the gaming landscape by embracing the expanded audience, and became a social phenomenon. Despite being vastly underpowered compared to the PS3 & Xbox 360, Nintendo's bold innovation paid-off in a big way, as more people were introduced to videogames thanks to the humble Wiimote.

It always warmed the cockles of my heart whenever I read a story about someone suffering from a disability or injury being able to play games again thanks to Nintendo's magic motion controlled wand.

Also, let's not forget the tons of great games released for the console (contrary to popular belief); such as Wii Sports, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, NSMBW, Xenoblade, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Other M, The Last Story, Monster Hunter Tri, Pandora's Tower & Wii Fit.

Oh, and Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. The highest rated games of the last 13 years. Those too.

Like the GCN, I'm more than willing to bet that the Wii will begin to develop a cult following in a few years' time. 'Hardcore' gamers are hypocrites like that.

Re: Platinum's Kamiya: "No Other Way" That Bayonetta 2 Could Be Made Without Nintendo

Kage_88

@Tsuchiya - I'm sorry, but that's rubbish. Xbox Live is a terrible service; a service that requires you to pay for basic features that are free on Sony and Nintendo consoles. Playstation Plus is a paid subscription service done right.

Oh, and you said this; "They've grown yes, but they are always behind the competition. Take off those stupid Luigi hats and focus!"

Call me meladromatic, but it's this kind of mentality that is leading to the homogenisation of gaming creativity. You say Nintendo are always behind the compeition - yet this is the same company that redefined the industry with the Wii and DS, and are always having their ideas stolen by the competition. The fact that their bosses can have fun and be goofy in web videos is exactly why I love the company; that they can act like gleeful children in a stuffy industry filled with souless suits and moneymen. Nintendo should not be emulating the business practices of the competition (as if their superior profits weren't evident enough), nor cater to the whims of a group of elitists that demand some sort of unification of online services; where everything on every platform should be the same, and NOTHING should be different. Nintendo should do what Nintendo have always done - be creative, innovate and not constrain themselves by popular trends.

Oh, and on-topic: I may have to check the Gamefaqs boards. Should be a laugh.

Re: Android-based Ouya Console Will Have NES and SNES Emulation At Launch

Kage_88

Wow, that’s pretty damn pathetic.

Ouya is supposed to be one of many new devices that are supposed to make traditional consoles ‘extinct’… yet one of the main selling points is playing dodgy Nintendo ports?

Reminds me of the smartphone developers who crow about Nintendo’s doom… before completely ripping-off the Japanese firm’s software.

Re: Reaction: Doom and Gloom Merchants on Wii U Being Nintendo's Last Home Console

Kage_88

Did you guys hear? The power of the Wii is the same as the Gamecube's!

THIS is on top of the ridiculous, idiotic name of the machine.

What the hell is wrong with Nintendo? The GCN was a flop...and now THIS?

Do they WANT to become 3d party? Sure, the DS bounced back from a rough start... but lightning can't strike twice. Mark my words, the Wii will mark the death of Nintendo.

Re: The Conduit Getting HD Remake For Mobile Tegra Devices

Kage_88

Eh...the controls will most likely be horrible; like almost every other phone game I've played.

Personally, I enjoyed the Conduit games. They were a nice novelty for the Wii; FPS games that pumped-out some technically (though not artistically) impressive visuals.

Also, the pointer controls are still the best FPS control method. I can't believe a super machine like PS4 is still relying on thumbsticks...

Re: Talking Point: Sony's PlayStation 4 Poses a Fresh Challenge for Wii U in the 2013 Holidays

Kage_88

I was very impressed with Sony's event. I'm definitely excited for the PS4 - though I won't be getting one at launch.

The features of the console sound great - and are loaded with potential (though it remains to be seen if Sony follow-through with that potential). The Vita streaming in particular sounds really neat; it could really take away some of the appeal of the Wii U.

Games wise, Killzone looked great...but the gameplay looked depressingly familiar. I think Bungie's Destiny is much more creative and ambitious.

Knack looked really neat (though I hope it doesn't devolve into a generic beat 'em up), as did Media Molecule's sculpting demo.

Watch_Dogs looked really fun (though I'm wary of how the game will turn out - I've been burned by Ubisoft many times before), and inFamous 3 will hopefully turn out to be great (loved the previous games). The Witness looks wonderful too (though not exactly pushing the PS4's limits).

Like Killzone, Diablo III looked woefully archaic (THIS is the best of PC?), and David Cage spoke his usual drivel.

Despite my reservations, the PS4 looks to be an absolute beast. I actually believe it could have games that look BETTER than PC. Sceptical? Take a look at Uncharted and God of War - games running on PS3's near decade-old tech. Much like the Wii U - people are foolish in directly comparing the PS4's guts to PC. Consoles are different; they are gifted with a fixed hardware that allows maximum optimisation by developers. It'll be very interesting to see future Wii U graphics compared to future PS4/Durango graphics, not to mention the large, AI-intensive worlds and computing power.

Also, I'm really digging the PS4 controller. Sony made the right move in evolving the traditional (outdated?) DualShock/joypad design.

It's Microsoft's move now...

Re: Watch Dogs Confirmed For Release On Wii U

Kage_88

Awesome! Glad that Ubisoft is still treating the Wii U with its big games (my disappointment with AC3 aside...). I heard that Miyamoto was impressed with Watch_Dogs (erk) at E3 lat year, and with all the talk of Nintendo courting 3rd parties, maybe their 'persuation' is actually paying-off? WIth this, and Platinum exclusives Bayonetta 2 and Wonderful 101...maybe Nintendo are a lot more dangerous than ever before?

DUH DUH DUUUUNNNN.

Whatever the case, the GamePad was MADE for Watch_Dogs. It'll be interesting to see the graphical differences between this and PS4...

Re: Sony Trolls Nintendo Ahead of PlayStation 4 Announcement

Kage_88

As far as I'm concerned, Sony lost the right to make fun of anybody a Long time ago. Let's see...

Have constantly stolen Nintendo's ideas; many of them nowhere near as succsseful as their counterpart's (Move, PS All-Stars, etc).

The PS3 hoovering all of their PSOne/PS2 profits.

The farce that was the PSN hack (and the simpering apology at E3 2010).

The flop of 3D TVs.

The PS Vita.

Being downgraded to 'junk' status after losing billions.

...have I missed anything else?

Oh, and "another Mario game"? You mean the Mario games that have revolutionised videogaming and belong in the top three highest rated games of all time (Galaxy 1 & 2)?

...As opposed to what...God of War? Uncharted?

Yeah, yeah...I may be taking this too seriously...but goddamn it, it's the principle that I'm fuming about!

Re: Criterion Lavishes Nintendo and Wii U With Praise

Kage_88

This was a great read!

We need more positive stories like this.

Enough with this 'doom and gloom' garbage! Trust me, the Wii U will have a prosperous half-decade; it will have a ton of awesome games, and it will NOT flop - as much as some morons wish it to happen.

Re: Feature: The Big Valentines Nintendo Direct Summary

Kage_88

The year of Luigi?

Best year ever in the history of humanity.

Whilst cynics and Nintendo-haters are no doubt accusing the Big N of once again milking their established franchises...I'll be too busy enjoying the awesome, green-tinted trifecta of Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario & Luigi 4 and New Super Luigi U!

Dream Team's setting alone makes it the BEST GAME EVER.

Re: Talking Point: Wii U's Graphical Grunt is Laid Bare - Shall We Play Games Now?

Kage_88

That Digital Foundry analysis was terrible.

"We now know everything! Except for the stuff we don't know about!"

Look, I've spoken from my soapbox enough times regarding Nintendo's core philosophies and ideas. I don't what else I can say that will convice these graphics whores of their anal stupidity.

Here's the thing with consoles - they will ALWAYS be outdated. There will ALWAYS be something bigger and better around the corner. PC is always at the forefront of this...always has been, always will. Yet despite this, 'underpowered' consoles have always thrived.

Guess why.

Yep. The games.

Think of all the great gaming consoles of the past; NES, SNES, Mega Drive, PSOne, Dreamcast, PS2, GCN, etc etc...their legacy isn't how 'powerful' they were, but all the great games they provided.

This is the GAMES industry...NOT the graphics industry.

Also, take a look at those Pikmin 3 screens. If Nintendo can achieve THAT this early in the Wii U's lifespan, then I don't think there should be any cause for concern for 'dem grafix'.

@AtomicToaster - My thoughts exactly. People seem to think Sony and Microsoft are somehow the acceptable barometers of what next-gen 'should' be. It's ridiculous. For all the criticism the Wii received, at least it wasn't flooded with microtransactions, day-1 patches, exhorborant DLC, disc-locked content, rip-off subscriptions (hello Xbox Live Gold), hacked systems (hello PSN), and online communities ruled by racist, sexist, homophobic and jingoistic 12 year olds.

Re: Nintendo Hints At An Additional Platform In The Future

Kage_88

@4 & 91 -Yeah, I was also going to mention the whole 'third pillar' thing Nintendo tried once. I would argue that it was somewhat of a failure, because Nintedo failed to maintain the Game Boy brand alongside the Wii and DS (their individual successes notwithstanding).

Still, the marketplace is a different beast now, so I wouldn't blame Iwata for trying something similar again. I seriously doubt it would be some sort of super-duper 'hardcore' gaming console; but rather an extended platform that would allow them to bring their games and services to a wider audience. We're already seeing Miiverse for smartphones...maybe it could be some sort of smartphone extension of the Nintendo Network?

Re: Nintendo Plans To Make It Easier For Developers To Share Their Assets Between Platforms

Kage_88

Cool, It's nice to see that Iwata and Nintendo are being so proactive in adapting to the changing industry. I read once that Nintendo needs to be 'paranoid' and innovate constantly in order to maintain their standing within the market. It sounds crude, but I agree with that sentiment. They always, ALWAYS need to look to the future - even if it means making choices that are percieved as detrimental in the present (such as weaker hardware for the Wii U).

Re: Iwata Implies That He Could Step Down Over Sluggish Sales Performance

Kage_88

That would be a real shame if Iwata ever did step down. I mean, look at what the company achieved under his hand

1.) Nintendo went from 3rd place (GCN) to 1st (Wii) in the home console race.
2). The DS and Wii served as catalysts to the expansion of the games industry (IMO, the greatest acomplishment).
3). The DS became the highest selling console of all time.
4). Wii Sports became the highest selling game of all time.

Yes, Nintendo did suffer their first loss in three decades - but I like to think that it was somewhat inevitable, rather than any major fault of Iwata's (though I guess technically he is held accountable). Despite this, he did one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. He gave himself a 50% pay-cut (as well as 30% for Miyamoto and 20% for various executives). How many other corporate heads would ever do so something like that? Hell, bank presidents REWARD themselves for failure!

FInally, Iwata also introduced 'Iwata Asks' - which is a fantastic site that showed how likable and friendly Nintendo's CEO really is.

To sum up - don't leave Iwata-san!
