Re: Talking Point: Why Skyward Sword Sales Failed to Soar

JebbyDeringer

The reason people compare Zelda to Skyrim is because Skyrim is epic while Zelda is a shallow turd in comparison. YES they are different games but there is no reason why Zelda can't strive to be more epic, and deep, while still staying "light hearted." The problem with Zelda is you REALLY feel you are just playing a game. The world is so closed in and confined, the controls are confined (action button for jumping and everything else!?!), the formula is old. While it would be silly for Zelda to copy a game from Skyrim it doesn't mean they should completely close their eyes to what other games are doing. People love Zelda because it's Zelda not because they want to play the same game over and over again with slightly tweaked mechanics and graphics. Most game series follow some sort of formula but with Zelda it's glaringly obvious within the first 30 minutes. Maybe if you are young enough you can't see the pattern but I get bored with Zelda games because I know exactly how they are going to play out and lose interest.

Re: MDK2 Dev Will Never Develop for Nintendo Again

JebbyDeringer

American Developers being arrogant? You have that backwards! Nintendo are one of the most arrogant game houses on the block. Miyamoto only cares about making games that are fun for him (or the developers to make) or are "creative". He sounds like a broken record. The most recent was with Angry Birds saying "This must have been fun for the developers to make". Are you serious? It's great if they had fun and perhaps it led to a better game but honestly every interview you just talk about yourself.

This is like taking knowing where your food comes from to a whole new level. I only buy fair-trade coffee now I'm only going to buy "fair made" games. All the developers must have had the time of their life creating a game, and all their creative juices must have been used or I will have to pass on purchasing it.

Re: Nintendo Reconfirms Wii U Will Not Make Wii Games Sharper

JebbyDeringer

Some of you people are silly. Upscale is a halfway house? wtf? Running the Wii at 720p is not upscaling, the game would be rendered at 720p reducing aliasing and such unlike a DVD that can't really have any extra detail pulled from the 480p picture. The most likely reason we won't see this is because they will probably do what they did with the Wii backwards compatability They will run Wii games in Wii mode which will lock out any of the more advanced hardware. Disappointing? Yes very much so.

HD is nothing special? Hmm well Wii games look fine on your SDTV from 1994 they certainly don't look great on a TV made in the last couple of years. Even on my small 32" HDTV they aren't very nice to look at. If you keep your distance it's not so bad but bump them up to 720p and I have no complaints.

Re: Millions of Wii Games Pirated in 2011

JebbyDeringer

Just because something was downloaded 1,000,000 times doesn't mean there are 1,000,000 copies of it floating around. I often download things multiple times and it either gets lost, deleted, or who knows. Also some people just download for the fun of it, it's like being addicted to shopping. That doesn't make it right but it's probably not a lost sale.

I'm a budget gamer and I find there aren't that many games worth $50 or more. I can afford them yes, but the value just isn't there. The last 6 or 7 games I bought on steam for $7.49 or less despite being able to easily pirate them.

Re: Miyamoto: "Retro Could Work with Nintendo on Zelda"

JebbyDeringer

They would likely save the series. What was considered ground breaking in 1998 is not so ground breaking now. And while I say ground breaking I enjoyed Ocarina of Time very much but was not blown away by it, other people were though. Zelda is only an amazing game if you wear blinders and forget about all the other games that exist. When I play Zelda I feel a disconnect, it feels like a game, it feels too strict and confined, it doesn't take me away and feel like an escape from reality. It feels like Nintendo is catering to a new generation of gamer's every single time they make a game. "You've never played this game before so we'll introduce you to the same formula we've been milking for years."

Re: Feature: The Revolution of the Wii

JebbyDeringer

@Skotski: Why would I want to use a stylus while holding a controller though? This is what I never understood about the DS. Two screens is also a gimmicky feature, focus on the games not strange peripherals. This is the problem with iOS games. The touch interface works for a number of genres just fine but the majority of games are shallow, the Wii was a step up from that but still had a lot of shallow games, the PS3 & Xbox360 sure had a bunch of bogus overrated games but they also had/have epic games of mass exploration.

That said I'm not against the screen on a controller idea, I think that's a great feature if it can be used as an alternative to a TV. I also look forward to see what PC modders do when they get their hands on it.

Re: Feature: The Revolution of the Wii

JebbyDeringer

The Wii did cause a revolution. Everyone bought it, especially ageing ex gamers of the NES era. People that hadn't played many video games since the NES or early SNES days were back into gaming because it simplified it and made it a social experience. This is where other consoles and PC's fail miserably. COD is not a social game. There are some benefits to online gaming but the change from real-life multiplayer to virtual took a hit on a lot of the fun factor. Graphics aren't the most important aspect of a game though they can really affect your experience. I'm an avid Minecraft player and that game has very simple graphics but it is addictive, can be quite social, and really brings out your creativity. On the other hand I just started playing Skyrim and I'm just blown away by the attention to detail and immersive environments. Simple graphics weren't the Wii's biggest problem...

480p was one of the biggest issues for me though probably didn't affect some of the casual buyers. 480i is fine on an old CRT screen, in fact it looks great. On a modern TV it looks pretty bad though sitting further away helps. You do get use to it but still...I don't mind the low polygon counts, or lack of atmospheric effects it's the jagged polygons on a high def screen.

The other issue was lack of support especially over the past year +. There have been some great games even some of the best in that time but there were few and both VC and Wiiware also suffered. It seemed like Nintendo was focused elsewhere (on their new system). Perhaps Nintendo saw the fan base was waning anyway but abandoning your customers isn't the best move for future relations. It's unlikely I'll get a Wii U (or any other console) next generation but only time will tell. Usually I wait at least a year for better pricing and more games.

Re: Talking Point: The Future of No-Frills Emulation on the eShop

JebbyDeringer

There are many games that will never be re-released and would be lost forever if it weren't for "illegal" emulation. There are so many licensing issues with a large portion of Nintendo's back catalog. Nintendo will find a way to make sure most of the best or popular games are released but there are a lot of lesser known gems that might not be. The other problem is what grumblegrumble said, if we buy these games once that should be enough. A VC game for Wii should work on the Wii U and 3DS. This would be the prime reason to go no-frills. It would be easy for them to code a new front end and leave the games as a basic rom.

Re: Current Wii Model to be Discontinued

JebbyDeringer

Removing features reduces cost you dolt. I see little point in this though, why release a new version of a console with little software support? Also Gamecube gaming is irrelevant for anyone wanting to buy the system this late in the game.

Re: Feature: The Future of Nintendo Gaming - 2D or Not 2D?

JebbyDeringer

2D will go on because it's what a lot of people want. Nintendo doesn't seem to care about 2D gaming though and neither do most companies. Indie devs do though. Most of the big companies only release the odd 2D game to appease what they see as a niche market. Super Mario Brothers Mii is B.S. Mii's are crap. Skip that. Put some real production $ in a 2D Super Mario Brothers. NSMBW was a large step in the right direction but they were even too cheap to animate princess peach.

Re: Tennis As a 3D Classics Release Was Way Out

JebbyDeringer

I enjoyed Super Tennis for SNES. Not sure where my brother got it from or why but it was actually quite enjoyable. During the NES years games like Megaman, Zelda II, Duck Tales & others were so much more interesting to me than Tennis.

Re: The Thought of a Shooter-Only Future Makes Iwata Sad

JebbyDeringer

There is nothing wrong with any genre of game, it's the bad games that dirty the genre. The Call of Duty series would have been better had they only made COD2 & COD4: Modern Warfare. The problem with all of those games is they are completely unoriginal. The first COD game ripped the plot straight out of popular WW2 movies from a decade ago. Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates and I can't remember the other.

I like first person shooters a lot but they have to be good. Most of them are overrated and complete media wankfests.
