Re: Don't Expect Any 3DS Titles From Epic Games Anytime Soon

JebbyDeringer

A couple of things. The 3DS is obviously going to be cheaper (but very close to the new itouch). The idevices aren't on a console cycle so they will outpace the 3DS in a short time (though game development is slow due to many retaining compatability). Buttons are nice but the games for the iphone can control very well if time is spent on that. Some games are still just far better with real buttons. The 3DS is a dedicated gaming device which some people like while others that already have an iphone might not want to bother with.

I just bought an original Gameboy and a Gameboy Advance SP (brighter screen) two days ago. I definitely appreciate Nintendo's portable line but for pure convenience I enjoy my 2nd Gen iPod touch. Size is also a factor and if the 3DS didn't have to maintain DS compatability perhaps it would have gone the single screen route.

Anyway that tech demo is impressive but lacks any enemy models or AI which will only bring the framerate down.

Re: UK Retailer HMV Tickled Pink About Upcoming 3DS Launch

JebbyDeringer

HMV started out as a music store but moved into movies & games and they sell a few accessories like headphones and such. They were never the cheapest place but they have gotten better in recent years. I guess it only exists in the Commonwealth countries judging by the comments here.

I hate Best Buy with a passion so I'd probably go to HMV before them.

Chester Cheetah was an ok game back in the day. Cool Spot was also fun. You forgot about Fido-Dido the Pepsi (i believe) mascot for a short time. I don't think I played the game though.

Re: Review: Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GameCube)

JebbyDeringer

I didn't make it past the first level because I didn't like the controls. I'd be fighting the monsters/demons/ghosts or whatever they were and it was hard to avoid getting hit. I could attack them and they would take off my life at the same time. I got to one point where I saved with not enough life to make it anywhere.

Re: A Thumping December Euro Release for Donkey Kong Country Returns

JebbyDeringer

I have high hopes for this game despite whining about the 2.5D graphics in the past. The art direction looks really promising even though I much prefer 2D for sidescrolling platformers. Funny that my belief is this is how Other M should have been and Retro were the creators of the last few Metroid games yet they were fully 3D and captured the atmosphere of the previous games quite well.

The one area where I'd love to be impressed is with the sound. One of RARE's many forte's was sound production and the Donkey Kong Country series was no exception. While I think they were stronger in the N64 days the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack is stellar. Most of the music I would never listen to on it's own (except the awesome pirate inspired tracks) but it complimented the game perfectly. There were also a lot of more atmospheric tracks especially in the second two games. Some of the songs would feature mostly background ambience and then a few instruments would kick in.

Re: Rumour: 3DS Tech Specs Revealed

JebbyDeringer

The specs aren't that impressive at all though really specs are just numbers. Heck the SNES had a 3.5mhz processor and the graphics still look great today (provided you use a proper low res 15khz screen). I got a free ipod touch 8gb (basically a second generation) and I'm at a point in my life where I'd rather have this than a dedicated handheld console. Actually truthfully the last handheld I owned was a Game Gear and have had little interest in gaming on the go. But as for the ipod touch even the old 2nd generation is very impressive. It does far more than gaming and the gaming it does do is top notch. I try and stay away from some of the more traditional D-Pad controlled games because it really is a lot better having physical buttons but there are some amazing games that utilize the touch controls. Oh and most games are dirt cheap yet still high quality. For me this is the future but I like that there are options for everyone. I don't have a cellphone (hate them) so for me it's nice to have something for a calendar, music, music production, email, and gaming. I'm just so amazed how far portable technology has come in the past 10-15 years.

Re: Sakamoto Wants to Know Your Metroid: Other M Thoughts

JebbyDeringer

I haven't played it I'm pretty sure I won't like it. Other than gameplay the most engrossing aspect of Metroid is the loneliness of it. Metroid has been successful because of a solid game not because of the characters. Samus is a girl, whoopy de doo, it's neat but why does that need to be the focus of the game. The best part of Samus being a girl in the previous games is that gamers just accepted it, there was no attention brought to that fact, she wasn't held on a pedestal (or a stripper pole).

I'd rather use my own imagination than rely on some cracked out badly acted story to explain it to me. That's the problem with a lot of games these days, they spoon feed us some story worse than the worst of Hollywood movies. I like having a bit of background information and perhaps learning more as I progress but I don't need cutscenes and bad dialog.

Re: Review: Metroid: Other M (Wii)

JebbyDeringer

I loved Metroid Prime & Super Metroid, and the original Metroid when I played in back in around 1990 but this game has me on the fence. There are a lot of points people have brought up that feel like deal breakers but then the game might be engrossing enough for me to not worry about them.

Re: Updated Cave Story Remixed Soundtrack Released

JebbyDeringer

In game it's a tough call. The original soundtrack suffers from low quality yet the updated soundtrack ruins the songs. The PC version feels better because the original soundtrack still sounds good. It's almost like they are running a highpass filter on the Wii version because it's muffled in comparison.

Re: Review: Another World (Super Nintendo)

JebbyDeringer

I always appreciated the game but never really got into it. I didn't really like the controls since they were timed to the animations so there was always a bit of lag with any of your actions. I'll maybe try again and see if I can get into it.

Re: Harvest Moon 64 Will Not Sprout on Virtual Console

JebbyDeringer

Isn't the PSOne version and the N64 nearly identical? I can't remember. I had the PSOne version but I played the N64 version as well.

nevermind. The PSOne version is a newer iteration. All the games are fairly similar though. I remember the GBA version to be pretty good.

Re: Review: Mortal Kombat (Game Boy)

JebbyDeringer

Initially I didn't like Mortal Kombat and I was a Street Fighter guy. I really didn't like how all characters had the same movements other than the special moves. It also wasn't nearly as fast or fluid as Street Fighter. It was an overhyped game by kids who loved seeing blood and loved that their parents wouldn't like it. Later I did start to like it for what it was. I'm a fan of all fighting games to a point so I can see the merit in Mortal Kombat. It's a solid game it's just not Street Fighter.
