Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Changing the Media Game at E3

JebbyDeringer

They realize they failed in kidnapping 360/PS3 owners. They needed to make a reason to buy the Wii U. Xbox/Playstation owners are fairly loyal but despite that Nintendo has given them zero reason to switch brands, none whatsoever. The other consoles have been very consistent in their offerings and people know exactly what to expect from them. Nintendo is the same old Nintendo which is bad if they want to expand their market. You can't just say things and expect them to come true, which is what they have been doing with the Wii U. Third parties own the industry now and have for some time you either have them on board or you buy some development houses to churn out some serious exclusives.

Re: These Screens Show What NES Games Would Be Like Today

JebbyDeringer

It's incredibly true. I've seen examples of all of those in modern games so no you can't "ignore" them. I give up on a lot of games near the beginning if they hand-hold me too much. I hate the mandatory tutorials that require you do do certain actions but at specific times. In other words you can't do it any faster than their incredibly slow pre-programmed pace. So many games now are nothing more than interactive advertisements. Zelda hand holds you so bad that you aren't playing a game any more you are just following a storyline. Some people don't mind which is fine but I don't like to play by the rules, I like to play creatively. I like games that focus on skill and can be played differently more than once. Zelda use to be like that, Mario use to be like that and thankfully still is in some ways though I could do without the silly stories and childish characters.

Re: Video Gaming's Unexpected Critic Passes Away After Battle With Cancer

JebbyDeringer

There was a huge uproar when he claimed video games are not art, I was one who completely agreed with him. Blockbuster video games especially take their plot lines (as shallow as many of them are) directly from movies. The original Call of Duty ripped it's plot directly from the WWII movies that were big at the time, it was complete Deja-Vu. Granted you can say that most blockbuster movies aren't art either, they are just explosions. There are games worthy of calling art though being interactive it's hard to classify them as such. I think Ebert would have enjoyed some of the more subtle games like Machinarium, Limbo, and others I can't think of at the moment. If any game is art it's a stylish game that doesn't require you to be a "gamer" to enjoy.

Re: Inafune: Japanese Developers Are "Too Proud" And "Don't Know What To Do"

JebbyDeringer

There are certain elements of Japanese culture that translate really well for western gamers and others that don't. I love really good Japanese games but there are really few of them these days. Their attention to detail is amazing. Many western developers completely lack any attention to detail and most blockbuster video games are devoid of anything interesting.

Re: Ubisoft Not Disappointed With Wii U Install Base

JebbyDeringer

I swear gaming news has turned into "Company X said this". And then they come back completely contradicting an employee's previous statement. Stories are being made out of offhand remarks that should never be stories in the first place. But I guess anything is news.

Re: You Can Now Control Your PC With Your Wii U GamePad

JebbyDeringer

Eventually we will get the full controller. The thing that has always bugged me about the wiimote on PC is that no one bothered to write proper drivers. You can use glovepie which is great if you need come custom setup but for just using my Tatsunoku stick or classic controller it's an extra few steps. It's much better on Mac or under Dolphin (which just detects it and works). The Pro controlelr is interesting because it is standalone and doesn't attach to a wiimote.

Re: Castlevania Producer Would Love To Work With Nintendo On Zelda

JebbyDeringer

I don't know about this Cox guy but I think this is a great idea. The RPG elements added into the Castlevania series were great and something I've wanted to see in Zelda since they last actually did it in #2. Zelda is mostly linear adventure game, I'd really like it if you could actually play the game differently every time. There are a lot of classic RPG's I play over and over because the experience is always different. Zelda adds almost nothing "extra" to the game other than the odd collectable & hidden heart pieces. Everything in Zelda is pretty much mandatory and handed to you.

Re: Hardware Classics: Nintendo Game Boy

JebbyDeringer

I was a Game Gear owner back in the day but now I have 3 of these babies should have bought a 4th & 5th. One of them is modded to add midi in. The hardware is pretty bulletproof for the most part. The plastic is a bit brittle these days so some of the screw down places inside break the first time you take it apart.

Re: Amazon Lists The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker HD For $59.99

JebbyDeringer

FAIL. Sorry I think I paid $10 3 years ago for the Gamecube version. This is either a pirate or wait until it is sold used and Nintendo gets none of my money purchase. I happily buy games but I NEVER pay full price. With services like STEAM on PC I can get amazing games a year or two old for $5 - $10.

Re: Feature: Reimagining The Wind Waker on Wii U

JebbyDeringer

The sailing was awesome for about 20 minutes but I agree it got boring. They should have made it more exciting like Wave Race but without the jetski. I thought the graphics were great. Most people complained that they were "kiddy" but they still look good even today. It looks like you are watching an animated cartoon.

I've just been playing Skyward Sword and I really like what they did with the music. I expected Orchestrated more of the same but the songs are actually unique and remind me much more of Square Enix music. Nintendo does what they want though, they really don't cater to the fans at all, luckily they usually make good games they just aren't always exactly what the fans hope for. The motion controls though are just silly. The wiimote swordplay just isn't accurate enough, they could do the same with a button press and and directional stick. The wiimote is also far too slow to react. When it works it's kinda fun but there is enough times that my attacks fail due to the technology not my own doing.

Re: Wii U Software Sales Are "Struggling"

JebbyDeringer

The average gamer believes Nintendo mainly caters to children. This is true. They "mainly" do. The average gamer wants to play big name titles from EA, Ubisoft etc. FPS games, 3rd Person action/adventure games, possibly RPG's. Sony/Microsoft fanboy's would need a LOT of convincing to go with the Wii U, I thought Nintendo was supposed to be targeting these gamers. If Nintendo is on equal ground and offers the exact same blockbuster titles (no less) there is a "small" chance it could attract some of these "average" gamers.

For the past 3 generations Nintendo has paved their own path, purposefully? avoiding big third party support. This would be fine for some of us that love Nintendo's games but they don't make enough games on their own to fill out a system's library, they've never ever been able to do this.

Nintendo needs to focus on developers as much as possible. Close ties with companies such as RARE in the past, Factor 5, Retro Studios, and others has helped them in the past but they need more. Modern games take a long time to develop.

Re: Retro City Rampage Still On Course For Release This Month

JebbyDeringer

I bought it for PC a couple weeks ago on sale (it's on sale on Steam right now too 50% off). It is a bit shallower than I expected but I really like all the 80s references, it's so over the top and they push multiple references at you in one scene which I actually find good in a wild sorta way.

While the main game design is based on GTA it plays a lot more like an old arcade game. Don't expect deep gameplay, but it's certainly deeper than many arcade games. Almost feels like it would be the perfect 3DS game, it's perfect in shorter bursts.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U's High-Definition Credentials Tested

JebbyDeringer

@LittleIrves I agree, Nintendo is still Nintendo and it is obvious they play test their games to death to make sure the game play is flawless. They obviously factor in tweaking a game's balance as a big part of their development time and it shows I just wish they put a little more love into the art assets, it really wouldn't take much.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U's High-Definition Credentials Tested

JebbyDeringer

The problem isn't the resolution, it's the care and attention put into the art. Compare this to something like Rayman Origins, or Trine 2, or many other modern platformers and you'll see NSMB has a really safe, almost lazy art style. It looks like a 2D game converted into 3D. Almost like a fan tribute. The biggest jump I've seen lately is games managing to drop the obvious "3D" look and make a convincing game that happens to be 3D but just looks good and even as good or better than hand-drawn.

There's almost no atmosphere in NSMB, it does NOT feel like a real world (fantasy or otherwise), it feels like a game world with strategically places blocks.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U Games of 2013

JebbyDeringer

A very poor showing if Nintendo wants to attract "other" gamers. Monster Hunter 3 has potential but it probably still suffers from the tiny tiny areas with loading in between. Great game on the Wii but very hardware limited in that regard. Pikmin 3 is really the only stand out game.

Re: Ex-Rare Staffer Explains How He Created A Profanity-Packed N64 Cult Classic

JebbyDeringer

Conker was a strange game. The gameplay was very random and broken up almost like a bunch of minigames slapped together but it was done so well and in a tight package with a story that somehow actually worked. It made the game have a more epic feel but I can see how it may have also been a turn off to some. It didn't have the fluidity of Banjo Kazooie or Mario 64 but it had so much variety, really interesting characters, and locations. To top it off it had fully recorded dialog which was quite uncommon outside of old school adventure games.

Re: WayForward Would Like To Make A Metroid Game

JebbyDeringer

If anything Team Ninja was incapable of handling Metroid, Team Ninja is incapable of anything except for fully animated breasts. They have never actually made a good game just highly overrated ones. Nothing worse can happen to a game than multi viewpoint fixed camera, it feels so confined and like you should be able to freely move around but you can't.

Re: Feature: Shigeru Miyamoto - The Father of Modern Video Games

JebbyDeringer

What do you mean by father of modern video games? His career spans pretty much all of video gaming with only a handful of games being released before he started.

While his early titles were amazingly solid it was Super Mario Bros that really offered the depth that made my Atari look like a 50 year old piece of trash.

Re: Developer Interview: Gaijin Games Gets Drunk with Wii U Power

JebbyDeringer

Gaijin is the biggest scam in gaming since EA started doing $60 yearly roster updates for their sports games. They put zero effort into them and they are on par with thousands of equally bad iOS games that get no credit whatsoever. On the Wii their games seem original but they aren't, they were done 30 years ago on the Atari 2600 and on iOS there are countless similar but infinitely better produced games. I'm all for retro games but Gaijin games offer no compelling gameplay and nothing new to gaming in general other than the feeling of a bad acid trip.
