Re: Review: Diddy Kong Racing (Nintendo 64)

JebbyDeringer

This was no Mario Kart clone. It wasn't just a Kart game it was an adventure game + a Kart game. I preferred it just because there was so much more to it. It was a serious challenge. Even after you beat the game 100% there was then a reversed mode and another silver coin challenge. Mario Kart was good for pure racing/multiplayer but Diddy Kong was a fleshed out experience taking as long as some RPG's to beat.

DKR was to Mario Kart what Banjo Kazooie was to Mario 64.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (Game Boy Color)

JebbyDeringer

Yeah this is definitely one of the best Zelda games. The colour palette is severely limited but it's still good

@billy-beauts: Zelda for the Wii U is just a demo, Nintendo did the same thing when the Gamecube was announced then they went on to make Wind Waker which was nothing like the demo and had many people disappointed.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS)

JebbyDeringer

"Is it absolutely perfect from a technical perspective? Not quite, but it is close to gaming perfection"

This line says it all. A 10/10 is impossible given your conclusion. Still I liked the review. The graphics look great though it's a shame about the sound, I wasn't impressed with the sound all that much when the game came out.

Re: Features: A View from Hyrule Field

JebbyDeringer

I feel Zelda games in general are very solid and what they do is done well (for the most part). In some ways though it's like pop music. The game appeals to a large audience. I grew up playing Zelda games from the beginning and the world's have been very small and almost claustrophobic. There is also a great deal of linearity to the games. There are some sidequests, heart containers and such, you can play out of order but it requires getting items from temples first.

On the one hand I'd love to see the Zelda mold broken. Introduce more towns, more swords, armor and boots, hidden places and items not required to the completion of the game, maybe some sort of leveling up system, I'd also love to be able to jump on command rather than as a context sensitive button.

On the other hand Twilight Princess had a lot of almost useless items. The slingshot was replaced by the bow early on in the game despite staying in your inventory, other items I rarely used.

While OOT was a great game I was always a bigger fan of Link to the Past. Despite some of the great features 3D brought to the game the world in LTTP was a lot more interesting.

Re: First Impressions: Cave Story (3DS)

JebbyDeringer

It looks much better in 2D (though granted I haven't seen it in "3D 3D"). I'm not a big fan of 3D over 2D unless the gameplay benefits from it significantly, or the graphics are clean and detailed.

Here the graphics are blocky, there is plenty of aliasing and the texture detail is really low.

Re: Wii U Hopes to Rectify Problems that Wii is Experiencing

JebbyDeringer

If Super Mario Galaxy 2 isn't hardcore I'm not sure what is. That game gets hard especially if you want to complete it. It's accessible to kids, sure, but it demands serious skill/brain power to complete. I'd recommend it to kids because they'll have fun and it will also increase their dexterity ten fold.

It seems that the definition of hardcore gaming are games that appeal to an immature audience that can't see the weak game through all the blood, boobs, and bullets.

Re: Wii U Uses 25GB Discs and Lacks GameCube Compatibility

JebbyDeringer

I've never understood these people who feel they need to throw out all their old games if backwards compatibility isn't there. Keep your old console, buy a new one. Or...Gamecube prices have been in the toilet for quite a while now. Last I checked EB Games was clearing them out with a controller for $9.99, they are probably all gone now. I have 4 Gamecube consoles, 4 Wavebirds, 4 other controllers, and all the other cables.

Re: Wii U Touch Screen is Resistive, Not Capacitive

JebbyDeringer

I'm not sure using a stylus while holding that massive thing would be practical at all. I like the accuracy of a stylus but capacitive is much more useful for speed. Sure capacitive can be super sensitive but I find that a positive. Resistive makes it easy to miss a press and have to do it twice (I hate those debit machines that have touch screen interfaces). For what Nintendo plans to do I'm sure it will work fine but the swipes & gestures you can do with capacitive are leagues better than presses.

Re: Wii U Hopes to Rectify Problems that Wii is Experiencing

JebbyDeringer

While the Wii's thunder has really died over the past year the system was still a huge financial success. Talking about hardcore gamers is a bit silly because the Wii's market was so much bigger than the Xbox & PS3. Nintendo will never be able to compete for the same market, it's obvious they don't really want to be on the same playing field. That said they do need to appeal to hardcore gamers this time around because I doubt that non/retired gamers will be ready for another gaming console.

Re: Talking Point: What's in a Console Colour?

JebbyDeringer

The Spice Orange Gamecube was actually made for me, unfortunately they forgot to release it in North America.

I dont like transparent but i think colour options would be great. White is still popular but definitely far passed its prime. I don't like silver because that usually involves painted plastic, i prefer plastic to be dyed. I also prefer matte over glossy.

Oh and sorry 3DS, I'm not a big fan of two-tone either.

Re: Are We Nearing the End of Consoles? Nintendo Thinks Not

JebbyDeringer

I don't know, it's hard to say. Consoles still have some benefits over other devices. The ipad pretty much is a big screen TV when you are playing it at less than half an arms length. Sound could be pushed over wireless to a stereo. The ipad screen has better colour, contrast, and viewing angles than the average persons HDTV (just lacks the resolution though still much better than the Wii). The touch controls work but are a big drawback for a lot of game genres. I can't see gaming losing tactile controls, it just wouldn't be a step forward. Motion, and touch controls are really nice in a small niche of games but the games I truly enjoy the most require a proper input. I think the technology is pretty much there though more will always be possible with a larger footprint.

The new thunderbolt ports on Mac's & eventually PC's will make external video cards much more possible making the Desktop PC obsolete for a minority of the die hard gamers.

Re: Review: The Ignition Factor (Virtual Console / Super Nintendo)

JebbyDeringer

I played this game once or twice back in the mid to late 90s and was surprised how good it was. It's hard to say if it's worth the VC purchase but if you need a solid game with a strategic element this is good. It reminds me a bit of the Rainbow Six games where you have to rescue hostages only here you are shooting fires instead of terrorists.

Re: Rumour: Could This Be the Next Nintendo Console?

JebbyDeringer

No Nintendo wouldn't release this info but someone else with access would. It looks either fake or a concept, the design is a bit too weak to be anything close to final hardware. I kind of like the idea for multiplayer but I think it would be strange to abandon the Wii pointer. There were a lot of gimmick games but there were a few excellent uses of the waggle and such.

This makes me miss playing my Wii. I played it once in the past six months because I haven't had a house or my own TV. I bought a new TV yesterday but I may return it because it has a TN panel instead of S-IPS.

Re: Nintendo Wants More Developers Like Retro Studios, Please

JebbyDeringer

Oh now Nintendo wants more development studios...I think another option would be to headhunt developers for a new studio. There are some good small studios but there are also a lot of good developers with good ideas starting out working at bigger studios Companies like EA are pretty corporate and while not a lot of creative new ideas can come out there many young developers start there.

Re: Super Mario Galaxy 2 Wins BAFTA for Best Gameplay

JebbyDeringer

I agree with the best gameplay award, the gameplay is top notch in SMG2. I'm not really into Mario's music, All the Mario games have catchy music but it's really not my style, I'm more into darker music whether that's electronic or neoclassical. As for best game I highly doubt it should have been Black Ops but I just started Mass Effect 2 last weekend and it's one of the best games I've ever played. The whole package is done so well. And as much as I like Mario his games will never be immersive like that.

Mario winning the best game award is like giving the best picture award at the Academy Awards to a Pixar film. It's possible but unlikely.

Re: Mario Kart Without Items Isn't Mario Kart, That Includes the Blue Shell

JebbyDeringer

I think the blue shell should be really rare. 1 possible per race AT THE MOST but make it random. It would be a better weapon if it wasn't expected. Do the same with lightning. Green shells should be common and red much less common. In Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 you had to be quite skilled with the banana. The blue shell was rare in Mario Kart 64 because I even forgot it was in that game.

Re: This Zelda GameCube Controller is Awesome in an Ugly Way

JebbyDeringer

I like the ideal but I'm not crazy about game branded accessories. It's not like Link uses boomerangs, swords, and shields that say "ZELDA" on them. I'd prefer it if they kept the branding off and just made it look like something that would fit in with the game. I find it worse when it's consoles and they are branded after specific games rather than a series. A Halo branded Xbox 360 would be better than one branded as Halo 3 specifically.

I kinda want to make one of these though but use a 1st party controller as the basis.

Re: Sakaguchi: To Succeed Internationally, JRPGs Need to Change

JebbyDeringer

I like JRPG's and western RPGS. JRPG's tend to be much more linear though especially in more recent years. There's nothing I hate more than an RPG where leveling up happens at predetermined intervals or there are only a certain number of enemies so no matter how many times you play the game you level at the same time.

With western RPGs I like the open worlds and sidequests but I dislike it when the leveling system is tied in with the enemies meaning all the enemies are weak when you are weak and strong when you have leveled up (Elder Scrolls Oblivion). It becomes almost pointless to level up. Racing Games often do this with car upgrades too.
