Re: Review: Black Tiger (Virtual Console / Virtual Console Arcade)

JebbyDeringer

This and Magic Sword are the sounds that define the arcade for me. When I played these games in later years (late 90s) the sound brought me straight back to my childhood despite not remembering much else about the games. Sure the older games also have the classic arcade sound but when I started going to arcades it was during the aural assault phase where they threw out as many sound FX as possible to attract you.

Re: Smash Bros. Game Boy Demake is Amazing in Action

JebbyDeringer

Good question, I'd like to know too. From the sounds of it the game won't be Gameboy compatible.

"Famous for his chiptune covers, musical artist Inverse Phase is the brain behind the audio of Super Smash Land. Not only has he created 8-bit remixes of the famous original SSB soundtrack, but he’s redone every single sound effect to fit the GameBoy’s original hardware."

Also from what I can find he uses samples not software like LSDJ so the music wouldn't be in a gameboy playable format which would mean the gameboy is out.

Re: Review: Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando (Virtual Console / Virtual Console Arcade)

JebbyDeringer

This was a popular game back in the day but it is normally overrated. Most of the joy that comes from Commando is the C64 soundtrack not present here. I had this game for the Atari 2600 I believe it was the first game I got for it. It was crap but I still played it. I believe it deserves slightly higher than a 4 but there are so many games that came after that did a better job. Jackal is one of them.

Re: Research Shows More Consumers are Choosing Their Phones for Gaming

JebbyDeringer

You're crazy if you wouldn't rather a device that will do both. The iphone/ipod/ipad don't have buttons so obviously some games just aren't as good (the simulated d-pad sucks in most games that use one). There are a ton of good games available though. Sure most of them are more shallow but they're also at 1/5th the price at minimum. Still there are some deep games.

I have an itouch & and ipad no DS but a GBA (brighter screen) I bought about 4 months ago. I missed out on portable gaming since the Game Gear and I forgot how convenient it was. Being tied to the TV with my Wii is such a pain when you have to share the TV. And it's amazing how long I can ride the bike at the gym when I'm playing a tower defense game. There are a lot of great things about the Apple Devices. The screens are brilliant, there are a ton of games, lot's of original games, a lot of retro inspired games, the control is excellent when the developer takes advantage of the positives. My Ipad has far better sound coming from the speaker than any of my laptops do there's definitely a smaller selection of games for the ipad (that aren't scaled up) but the quality ratio is higher. Nintendo still has the upper hand with deeper games but it's starting to change. Still Nintendo is the reason I bought a Wii, their games are unrivaled. Mario Kart for DS is a ton of fun multiplayer.

I don't have a cellphone, I hate the things, my last cellphone was 9 years ago. I might eventually feel the need for one but for now...

Re: Super Everdrive Flash Cart Miniaturises Your SNES Collection

JebbyDeringer

@JesusSaves: I guess you don't play VC games then? Playing roms on a cartridge, on a real system, is identical to playing the original cartridge. And emulation can be good if done right. The picture quality of a NES using composite video is pretty horrible but outputting to an old 15khz RGB monitor looks amazing.

Re: Review: Faxanadu (Virtual Console / NES)

JebbyDeringer

Love Faxanadu but it isn't a long game. I've beaten it it one sitting a couple of times. It's definitely short for an RPG but it's quality all the way through. If you are a first time player though it may last a bit longer. I've beat the game a handful of times since I was about 8 years old.

Re: Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary is 50Hz Only

JebbyDeringer

These games look far better on older displays especially using RGB (SCART). That is the way they are meant to be played though it's not hard to argue that 60hz is better than 50hz. The downside is that older TV's are becoming more and more rare and for most it's not practical to have a dedicated retro monitor. Not making these games playable to modern standards is a mistake on Nintendo's part.

Eventually we will see modern remakes of some of these games I'm sure of it. The games are good and still look fairly decent with the right hardware but as technology progresses the flaws become more and more apparent.

Re: Review: Sonic Colours (DS)

JebbyDeringer

The graphics look pretty poor from the shots shown. Then again I found the Sonic Advance games to look pretty poor as well in comparison to other games on the system.

Re: Reggie Wonders Where Metroid: Other M Sales Went Wrong

JebbyDeringer

I don't have any interest in it despite being a big Metroid fan. The flaws people have described are the types of flaws that I would notice and would cheapen the experience for me. I also hate Team Ninja with a passion, the most overrated development house in existence. DOA was ok at one point, Ninja Gaiden was way overrated and Beach Bimbo Volleyball was a joke.

Re: New Donkey Kong Country Returns Trailer Shows Mine Cart Madness

JebbyDeringer

Everything looks awesome just the music is subpar though I realize that's just the cheesy title music. I'm sure the mine cart level has more suitable music. The game looks like it's going to be really good. The craziness looks enjoyable.

Part of the whole water level thing in DKC though was to slow the pace. I really appreciate games that have sections where you just chill out, it breaks up the pace. This is why I prefer shooters like Half-life to ones where every screen you are killing hordes of endless enemies. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt though, I'm sure they know what they're doing. Metroid Prime was a perfectly balanced game so if they say water levels aren't needed they are probably right.

Re: Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary Edition Coming to U.S.

JebbyDeringer

Ok I can eat my shoe now since I said we probably wouldn't ever see All Stars Again. I might consider buying it just as a nice collectible. I wish they had included more though like the NES version, maybe some behind the scenes info, perhaps some unique Wii features or graphics. Still $30 isn't bad but I don't doubt it will be hard to find once it starts to sell.

Re: Review: BIT.TRIP FATE (WiiWare)

JebbyDeringer

I find the Bit Trip series slightly overrated. They are solid, they are original, I like the retro feel, the sound is quite good, I'm just not blown away. I have yet to play Runner & this one but they both look quite good and they look more interesting to me. I'll probably pick up both.

Re: Features: NES Homebrew Is Where The Heart Is

JebbyDeringer

Both the NES and SNES have aged decently though it depends on your TV. I've got a 14" screen that I can run with S-Video or even RGB and it really makes NES & SNES games shine. These games weren't designed for their pixels to be so prominent, they relied on the softness of the old CRT screens to soften the pixels.

3D does age badly though I still like a lot of N64 games and people do feel nostalgic for newer systems if they grew up with them.

Re: Walmart Leaks Red DSi XL Package for America

JebbyDeringer

Mario All Stars is too much of a bargain. It made sense to Nintendo back in the SNES days when NES games were considered nearly worthless but they learned their lesson and from the GBA up until now they have been selling the games individually for more money. I doubt we will ever see All Stars Again. In fact they have probably already removed it from the history books.

As for the DSI XL it's tempting. I don't have a DS and I like the idea of a collector system but I'd want to keep it in excellent condition. $200 might be a bit steep when I can get the regular DSI XL for $170, a DSI for $150 or a used DSI for $109 or less.

Re: How Nintendo Manufactured the Famicom on the Cheap

JebbyDeringer

I just picked up a 1980's Akai Ghetto Blaster made in Japan. It's silver & red it looks like the same exact red plastic as the famicom though I can't be 100% sure since I don't have one lying around. Most of the plastic is painted silver but there is one button on the front and the bottom/front slides off to expose the batteries. Both of these are famicom red.

Re: Review: Resident Evil (GameCube)

JebbyDeringer

The Gamecube is THE system for Resident Evil. 0,1,2,3, Code Veronica, and 4 were all released for it. I still haven't played the remake though I own Zero & 4. Zero is nice but the inventory system was just frustrating. I'll pick up RE:Remake as soon as I come across it.

Re: Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 (WiiWare)

JebbyDeringer

Interesting that it fits withing 40mb yet for the iPhone it's just over 80mb. Although now that I think about it, it's probably because it has duplicate art for the iPad and iPhone 4 which both are also higher res than the Wii.

edit: Looking at the game for the iphone the music actually takes up 63mb.

Re: n-Space CEO Describes the Games Industry as a Mess

JebbyDeringer

I've been expecting a crash for the last couple of years and it's in a much worse state now then it was two years ago. The price isn't the only problem, it's also the amount of games. There are so many games out there it's really hard to find the good ones without resorting to reviews. If you thought the Wii was bad have a look at the app-store. Limitless games with most of them $5 or even much less. A lot of them go on sale regularly and there are a number of quality games you can get for $0.99. The prices are starting to rise due to the need to now develop for essentially 3 different devices but they are still cheap. With such low prices it's easy to take a risk but it's also easy to get burned. Thankfully most of the bad games aren't anywhere near as bad as some of the Atari 2600 games that came out.

The problem is compounded by the fact there are so many AAA titles on past generation consoles that can be picked up for cheap as well. The older games are cheap and other than technologically they are as good or better than a lot of newer games. I think a lot of gamers have found themselves more collectors than gamers since they don't always have the time to play everything they buy,
