Re: Developer Session: Nifflas and Ripstone Talk Over Design Principles, Age Ratings and What's Next

JebbyDeringer

Sometimes games aren't made for children, he made the decision to target this to 16+ It's too bad for young kids but it's his game. Sadly my bathtub moonshine is too potent for children too.

I'm not a huge fan of swearing or violence just for the sake of it. Sometimes it works and get's the point across but in a lot of other cases it's done to impress 14 year old boys. I haven't played this so I have no idea how it comes off.

Re: Aonuma Keeps Returning To Zelda In The Hope Of Making A Perfect Game

JebbyDeringer

Zelda will NEVER be perfect without proper controls. OOT was great but I knew it was flawed as soon as I found that jumping was an action confined to an "action" button. It's by no means even close to a game breaker but it does knock points off which pulls it further away from perfect territory. Also this plays into the targeting system. Targeting is good and somewhat necessary but it exposes a move set only possible within the targeting system (including jumping on demand). These sorts of things pull you out and scream "GAME" rather than immersive experience. I don't have a better suggestion but what they are doing now isn't "ideal". The waggle controls were also poor even in Skyward Sword, I'd much prefer regular stick/buttons. It's not that much fun when buttons are 100% reliable and waggle is only 85%.

These are just technical issues, there are other game play issues but they are more opinionated. The games aren't bad by any means and in some ways they are better than almost everything out there. I think that's the problem I have with them. They are perfect in some ways which makes me wonder why they can't be perfect in all.

The problem with the rest of the game relates specifically with Japan and their "old people" run everything mentality. Bring in some new blood and you will get your perfect Zelda.

Re: Nintendo "Would Like to Enrich" Its Virtual Console Lineup

JebbyDeringer

Ok if they are going to do this they NEEEEEEEEEED a unified store. These games are emulated so really the only thing difference is the embedded emulator that is system dependant, the ROM data is exactly the same. They should have a unified account system and the games should be purchased and useable on multiple devices. I'm done with buying games multiple times and tying games to a system rather than an account is 1990s technology. Making it available for iOS would be very smart especially with the now available off screen controls in iOS7.

Re: First Impressions: Stardust Amazoness

JebbyDeringer

Fan Service? Sorry this is in no way empowering to women. Most of the women that think this is completely harmless are the type that don't have the body to pull these outfits off. The ones that do know what it's like to be ogled on a daily basis.

Re: Review: Pinball (Wii U eShop / NES)

JebbyDeringer

I use to play this game, It was a fairly decent time waster at the time but I'm not sure it would be worth anyone's time today except maybe for Nostalgia. It's solid but very simple and weak as far as pinball goes.

Re: Aonuma Demonstrates the Challenges of Creating a 3D Environment Based on A Link to the Past's Overworld

JebbyDeringer

@Kirk Exactly! Nintendo needs some better artists and 3D modellers that's for sure. They are so worried about camera angles when their art just plain sucks. It's SO generic it could have easily been automatically created by a computer conversion process. There's no personality or style at all.

The 3D look they have been applying to games like this and New Super Mario Bros. looks cheap and much like early pre-rendered art assets. It looks like a budget game. I mean at least systems like the N64 were low-resolution and played on blurry TV's in 240p.

Re: "Uninformed" Store Staff Are Hurting Wii U Sales, Claims Senior Games Analyst

JebbyDeringer

Go into almost any place that sells games and most of the people working there will have a hate on for Nintendo. They'll virtually never point you at a Nintendo console if you are unsure which to buy.

The Wii U was a terrible naming choice on Nintendo's part, they really should have done a better job distinguishing it, even the console design should have been given more thought. It makes sense what they were trying to do, continue on a legacy much like Apple products but it hasn't worked in this case especially since they are now the underdog.

Re: Eiji Aonuma Wants the Wii U Zelda's Hyrule to be "A Setting No One Has Ever Imagined Before"

JebbyDeringer

The problem is despite flaws games like Skyrim, or the Witcher 2, or even Final Fasntasy have a much grander scale. They leave a lot more up to the players imagination rather than the developers. I don't think Zelda should become an open world do whatever you want with no guidance type game BUT I think they have become too strict and linear path story driven. I prefer games where the game doesn't play EXACTLY the same for every person, and I like taking my time yet actually having things to do with that extra time I take. I also dislike how specialized the dungeon items/weapons have become and control swinging just isn't fast and accurate enough for entertaining enemy battles.

Re: Inafune: If You Haven't Played Mario, You're Probably Not Good At Designing Games

JebbyDeringer

You would be surprised how many young kids are still exposed to Super Mario Bros. And many of them like it (though find it very hard). I talked with some 13-14 year old kids who all had played the game before.

I agree that it is a benchmark (all of them) in game design. The controls are always tight, if any mistakes are made and you end up dying it is always the gamers fault, the games have so few flaws you can never blame the game for your bad playing. There are things I don't like about some of them (Galaxy 2 has way too much talking, it's too generous on 1-ups and such) but game play is still extremely tight and varied.

Even those so called "adult" games, you know the ones labelled 18+ but targeting 14 year olds with their use of women as sex objects, gore for no reason, and swearing every third word can learn a lot from a Mario game. Even in that type of game controls and game play should be tight.

Re: Review: Pokémon X & Y (3DS)

JebbyDeringer

Never got into the Pokemon craze but they are great games, not just fluff like some people think. I just started playing Crystal for GBC last week and it's pretty interesting and deeper strategy than I expected. That's the great thing about Nintendo, they make stuff for kids that is often great for adults too.

Re: Review: Milon's Secret Castle (3DS eShop / NES)

JebbyDeringer

I rented this game as a kid, it had no instruction manual, me and my friend were SO lost on what to do. We decided to return it and see if we could exchange it for a different game. The shop took pity on us and let us exchange it. I can't seem to remember what we got instead which is sad because I'll never forget this game.

Re: Eiji Aonuma States Desire to Avoid the Limitations of Tradition in The Legend of Zelda Franchise

JebbyDeringer

@nfzeta007 If anything Nintendo has been milking Zelda for far longer than any other developer has been milking a franchise. Your question about Why don't other developers think like this should be "Why didn't Nintendo think of this sooner".

It's honestly about time they change things up. I'd love to see more variety and more ways to play the game. The earlier games could be played out of order provided you did a few key things. Zelda II though could be broken if you used a key from a different dungeon and then completed it with an unclaimed key still in it. I'd love to see more items. RPG's have many different armours and weapons, give us some choices, let us customize Link so not everyone has the same experience when playing. Make the Bow & the Sword interchangeable so you could play with either as your primary weapon, give us more variety in swords, give us more than one human town, I'd love experience points though some might not agree. Focus more on enemies and combat, puzzles are fine but don't make them the primary focus.

Nintendo has sort of lost track on why people love Zelda, they don't love Zelda because it's another Zelda game, they love exploring, finding secrets, defeating enemies, boss fights, and a solid story doesn't hurt. Making it too restrictive is not a good thing and leaving some room for player imagination rather than developer imagination is really important.

Re: Capcom Europe To Axe More Than Half Its Workforce Due To Major Restructuring

JebbyDeringer

While I can't really speak for those games much I really enjoyed the original Lost Planet. The graphics were great at the time and it was western targeted sure but the gameplay and art design was very Japanese. It was actually really unique and reminded me a bit of Metroid and a bit of Mech games. DMC has always been crap, I've never enjoyed that series. It's a cheap arcade thrill with pumped up graphics. Resident Evil took a nose dive after 4. I'm still curious about Lost Planet 2 & 3 but have yet to purchase 2 on steam because it never goes on sale and it's too expensive especially given it's age.

ok actually checked and Lost Planet 2 is only $19 now, not really bad at all.

Re: Microsoft Wants You To Know That Its Surface Tablet Can Play SNES Games

JebbyDeringer

I love emulation and unlike many people on here have no problem with it. I do however think it's completely wrong to use it as a "feature" in advertising and should be left in the dark for those "in the know". While this isn't advertising it shouldn't be endorsed by the Microsoft team or whoever runs their twitter account.

Nintendo are missing the boat though, they could have been offering up their retro games on multiple systems for years and reaped loads of money. Instead people will be playing them for free and mostly grow tired of them before Nintendo is broken up and sold for scrap.

Re: Soapbox: Why Grand Theft Auto V Isn't For Me

JebbyDeringer

I've played all the GTA's and I can understand where you are coming from. Vice City was the peak for me, it was a great game and it was the least serious of the bunch. The other games (especially post Vice City) are a bit too dark and gritty. GTA IV was initially fun but was a let down after a short time, I didn't even make it half-way through. I don't mind violence but I don't like it when it's completely senseless and targeted at 14 year old boys who have yet to have any life experiences. I also despise sexism in games. I don't think the developers take their game really seriously but the presentation doesn't show that. I'd like to try it but am in no rush.

Re: Talking Point: With Calls for Nintendo to Follow the Crowd, It Faces a Dilemma

JebbyDeringer

Why do we even need multiple consoles. I mean the Xboxone/ps4 are so similarly specced and all the money is made on the games anyway. Why not partner and not segment the market (won't happen I know). I honestly have no loyalty to any of them. It's like Microsoft Windows. I don't care about the OS and all it's bloat features, I just want to run my applications. Similarly I don't care about the console, it's about the games. They seem to all have forgotten that.

Re: Weirdness: Say Hello to the Cross Plane, a GamePad For Other Systems

JebbyDeringer

First of all it's a prototype so yeah the plastic isn't perfect, second they can't make it cheaper unless they ramp up production. I think it's a great idea, I'd love to play my PC in another room. Price is too high now but I'd consider it for half that or less.

Yes they are copying the concept of the WiiU controller but they are thinking much broader.

Re: Video: There's A Fan-Made Final Fantasy VI Movie In The Works

JebbyDeringer

Don't people realize they can't really do this...in most instances they will be contacted by lawyers. It's also sad they need to play off an existing franchise to make a movie, why not create your own characters? I guess because being Final Fantasy people will definitely watch it no matter how bad it looks.
