This isn't a charity event. They are selling overpriced consumer electronics that are missing a plethora of features considered standard 10 years ago already.
2 years into the life cycle, It's stable enough. It's time to start rolling out features.
Of course it looks better. The battletoads reveal was awful. I felt like i went back in time. Not the modern reboot I would have chosen.
Same with that ridiculous isometric contra game that looks like it got yanked directly from the Google play store.
Meanwhile in professional game development world, you have Sony transitioning God of War into a new era. That's the type of work that's worth the price tag. That's the pedigree and talent fans expect from a modernization of prestigious franchises.
Not these weak indie retro bait cash ins that can be flipped onto Google store at a moment's notice.
If only this level of honesty was applied to all games reviewed on this site.
Everything from the game industry is overpriced. Everything from Nintendo is grossly overpriced. It doesn't matter how cute the main character is or how deeply entrenched it is in our consciousness. If a game is 3gb and sells for 80 bucks it's over priced.
This franchise deserves better than an isometric clicker. After 30 years this is how they "reimagine" a classic IP? Jesus Japan, learn to develop modern 3D games that are actually worth the asking price.
All I'm seeing out of Japan at E3 is a bunch of remasters, asset flips and desperately clinging to a time when they were innovators in the industry.
The industry takes 2 steps forward and nintendo and their partners take 3 steps back.
How come Japanese devs associated with Sony don't suck this bad?
Just enough effort to sell a game as a microtransaction platform designed to fleece unsuspecting kids and casuals on the Nintendo platform.
That's the EA we all know and love. How exactly does this company remain relevant? Who are the people consciously giving them money? Casuals. Star wars casuals, sports casuals, scrubs that fell for their twitch fueled Apex marketing stunt, soccer mom's and toddlers playing their mobile vomit.
The funny thing is, it's not even real gamers buying their games. It's the unwashed ignorant masses.
Absolutely. It's 2019. How many of these no name indie pixel bait titles do you need?
Pixel art is amateurish because it's not being done out of irony or humor or homage. It's being used because these devs lack talent eith modern techniques and game design.
Another 2d sidescroller with pixel art. Wow such retro. much talent.
When do we draw a line between retro homage and just plain amateurish junk?
Nintendo eshop is like the garage sale of video games. It's like going to a flea market and having some pretentious hippie try and sell me a jar of organic artisinal jam....and then try and justify the exorbitant cost by telling you all the passionate hours that were put into it.
I don't care how hard you worked, how passionate you are or how much love went into it. If it's a no name retro bait, it has no business selling for what it does.
Maybe if it was harder to get this stuff published/greenlit, they'd be encouraged to work together to deliver a better game. Instead of 20 small crappy games.
Should be way stricter criteria if your software is going to rub elbows with triple A in the eshop.
Who is still buying GTA V? It's a game from last gen....that barely worked online, had very little content and was designed to fleece people into buying micros.
That's before we even discuss the dated engine and it's janky combat, physics and controls. Or the skill-less built in aimbot that degrades all gunfights into a hit box snapping affair that a 3 year old could play.
No wonder games suck. If people are willing to buy this outdated trash.
Lol not sure what this comment is supposed to mean. All games should be running at a minimum of 60 fps by now. It's 2019.....
These are old PC rpgs. 60 fps isn't new or some magical feat. 60 fps minimum has been a standard on pc since the advent of 60hz displays. 60 fps isn't a magical feat. It's been done long before modern consoles were invented.
The only people that ever made a game run at 30fps and decided that was the standard, was the console people. The console side of the industry imposed those limitations on themselves.
If pc hardware was running these games 15 years ago at a good clip, there's no reason the switch can't. Unless they're bad ports.
I don't. Look at the positions he's held and projects he's worked on.
Every single toys to life endeavor has failed. Hence why he's going to Nintendo where he can design over priced toys to peddle through toddlers. Everyone else is abandoning it. Nintendos the only place left for product placement crossover revenue.
Toys to life is scummy. Reminds me of 1 season runs of cartoons in the 80s designed to prey on adults' income through their children. Just a 30 minute tv ad for toys.
Just bought this last night. Gonna necro this review because it's falsely being scored as an 8/10 game and I want to warn fellow gamers about this abysmal port. It seems like every other outlet has also lazily glossed over the switch version, giving it 8s.
Instantly met with brutal stuttering, slowdowns or just straight freezing up mid animation. This occurs during any and all areas of the game. Whether it's the overworld map, exploreable areas, combat or even navigating menus.
This game launched in 2018 and HAS NOT (as of this post) been patched.
From this sites review;
"That said, these framerate drops don’t impede the main gameplay as they would in other genres, and the loads have a negligible effect on the game’s pace. Obviously, improvements through patches would be welcome, but we didn’t encounter anything catastrophic and the ability to play on-the-go is ultimately worth the occasional performance dip. "
Wrong. 100% unequivocally false. This games performance issues are apparent from the moment you start the game and they do not relent. Game runs like trash in handheld or docked. The load times are totally unacceptable for what's in offer here.
I'm appalled at the shilling in this review. The game is hands down the worst performing game I've played on the switch so far and doesn't deserve an 8/10.
Really wishing Nintendo had a return policy similar to steam. I knew within 10 minutes the game was junk.
Opening the smartphone storefronts on your device is s good way to cheapen the entire experience.
You can count on one hand (and that's being generous) the amount of smart phone "apps" that deserve to exist.
I don't think anyone using Google play to bolster their library is going to shuffle many units. Even if they do get real game developers on board, the existence of the low quality bar set by google play/apple store will guarantee half effort cash grabs.
I mean were already seeing it on the switch. Some pretty sketchy no name games selling for way more than they're worth and have the production values of a phone game.
As much as I enjoyed octopath traveller, I'm still not satisfied with the money I spent. 80 bucks for 3GB seems almost....criminal.
I tend to agree with the guy thinking this seems late in the games cycle.
Minute % based tweaks should have been dialed in shortly after release. This sort of game doesn't have big meta shifts like a moba or hero game that require it.
If a gun wasnt balanced 3 days ago, that means it hasn't been for 2 years.
They can tweak guns all they want. I won't reinstall or buy another splatoon game until they fix the unskippable intro and get rid of the 2 map rotations. The map rotation system makes the game feel like a demo. ALL maps should be in rotation.
This has nothing to do with mob mentality and everything to do with the complete and utter lack of respect for the source material in an attempt to cash in on a Jim Carrey "comeback".
Judging by the overwhelming response, not a lot of people were going to see the movie. Hence the existence of the early trailer and it's deployment to the very social media you criticize.
Wonder how long it will take for the realm royale community to chastise switch players for being mute with terrible pings.
It took about 2 days of paladins crossplay for the rhetoric to spread around their forums. Switch players are the weakest link and no one wants them on their team.
It's one thing to offer an inferior online service, but to have your customer base be treated like dirt because of Nintendos shortcomings isn't fair.
They really need to outsource their online efforts or restructure internally.
It's pretty obvious that someone incredibly arrogant and ignorant at Nintendo is getting in the way.
It isn't this difficult, the rest of the industry seems to have figured it out decades ago.
Who would want to play online with random strangers in a map building game?
Let alone without proper voice chat?
Friends are the Only people I can imagine wanting to play this with. Who cares about leaderboards in a game that will never be balanced?
Just plain stupid. What is the major obstruction here? Do they not have internet in Japan? .....
Just the fact that they are bothering with leaderboards still in 2019 shows how out of touch they are. Leaderboards were a failed experiment 2-3 generations ago already. They get manipulated and hacked and lose any credibility the first week of going live.
Companies with more money, knowledge, talent, resources, et all have already made all these mistakes for 3 decades so Nintendo doesn't have to.
You don't have to be a fortune teller to know what's going to happen. The internet and the way people behave isn't new. People are going to gravitate towards maps designed to rack up points. Cheesy low effort maps that net lots of points will send boosters to the top and ruin it. There's no way to accurately dole out points in a custom map scenario. Leaderboards are a waste of time and are being used as an excuse for their ineptitude and lack of effort.
The primary draw of a builder game is to share your creations with and challenge your friends NOT play solo to climb a compromised leaderboard.
Quick. Make something cutesy and free to play with lots of skins to sell!
Hmmm. How about rollerblading mixed with rocket league and fortnite?
And these idiot companies wonder why legislation is looming to combat their business models that prey on people.
Games like this exist to fleece kids and latch onto fortnite market share. No one talented or with any creative passion came up with this. It's the result of analytics and focus groups.
That art style isn't a coincidence and neither are the elements they stole from popular games in the same vain.
A.I. could be generating "games" like this in the near future simply by parsing trends from social media of teenagers. Scary.
I like being sidelined as a switch user in these crossplay games.
The switch can't compete with other platforms. Even if the game does run at parity, the switch's network performance and lack of integrated voice chat guarantee a switch player is the weakest link.
Ones skill isn't even a factor.
I was mildly interested in this but will probably pass if I have to be matched against seasoned vets on better platforms with dedicated voice.
If it's anything like paladins, then I'll pass. Getting rekt by teams of people that have been playing since alpha with better fps, ping and social features isn't remotely fun.
I'm ok with half effort ports. Everyone else seems to be.
But at least charge accordingly. If the game runs at a lower resolution, has inferior frame rate and has less content, it isn't worth the same price or more than the other versions.
Nintendo needs to start enforcing this. Release sloppy second ports and flips all you want but be honest about it and be reasonable with pricing.
Oh no! An obscure Japanese company that makes niche games no ones heard of is in financial trouble?
Maybe if more of these "mobile" companies masquerading as game developers go out of business, the quality on the eshop will increase.
No one wants full priced software with the production values of a phone/3ds game anyways. Maybe if they spent more time on their actual games instead of the anime girls on their eshop thumbnails.....
If your game is a good product and can maintain a healthy population on its own merits, then by all mean, release a real expansion. Leave the piece-meal pixel peddling to scummy mobile games.
Most games don't have a long enough shelf life to justify DLC investment. Why give EA, Activision et all, money for something that will be replaced by next years inevitable sequel?
Once again, id like to thank my peers for helping make the game industry worse than it already is. Instead of new exciting games, we get nickel and dimed on professional asset flips. <3
Can hardly wait until next gen when they try to sell this to you again.
Please guys. Help finance this irrelevant company so they can make more pachinko machines and squander the metal gear franchise. Thanks.
Hey look! More table scraps completely unrelated to quality, lag free online gaming.
Getting tired of saying this nintendo.....
If you want to sell me a subscription to access features in a game i already paid for, make THAT feature BETTER.
I don't want a buggy NES emulator that suffers from epileptic seizure inducing flickering and artifacting that features a drip feed of content at a glacial pace.
I don't want "game vouchers" or "coupons" with discounts that are laughable.
I want to be able to play smash online with a quality and stable connection.
Get it Yet?
Fix the actual service you're asking us to pay for and then worry about supplementing it with other features.
I dont get the concern about file size with games like these. Anyone whos played the originals know it has the replay value of a fart and you will likely wrap it in 1 or 2 sittings.
It's a rental at best or just delete it when you're done. Problem solved. Jesus.
They should split online and retro into 2 separate things and do both of them right. Instead of doing both poorly.
Online players don't necessarily care about retro games and visa versa. We shouldn't be paying for both if we don't want both.
2 completely different demographic of players being forced to supplement each other's paid services.
It's like Nintendo fans live under a rock and have never heard of this franchise. It's always been extremely barebones and it most certainly isn't comparable to Diablo.
Diablo has ever increasing difficulty to loot settings and seasonal content drops. Games like Diablo and path of exile are designed to be played infinitely.
Games like Alliance are just button mashers set in a comic theme. Once you beat the story or unlock stuff it's over. Its a very templatey style of game that could literally be reskinned with any fan service. Similar to the musou games for Zelda and fire emblem. Drop a new skin rinse repeat.
You hit the nail on the head. The expectations are not only too high but totally misplaced.
Using walled off console ecosystems to force us to repurchase the same software over and over isn't sustainable. Id like to think that most intelligent people are getting tired of the nickel and diming.
The price point alone tells us they're doing it for profit rather than game preservation. Which is arrogant and greedy.
At some point Nintendo and their grimy partners are going to have to figure out a way for us to own our digital purchases going forward. These old pixel games should just run on future hardware without question. We shouldn't have to keep buying them every gen.
There's very little value in digital purchases that don't have any permanence. If I buy a game on steam, I own it forever and can play it at any point in the future. Not the case with these purposefully closed off consoles.
These games are so old that selling them for money seems ... I dunno underhanded. They should be happy there's still interest and make an attempt to preserve it rather than constantly tearing it down and reselling it.
TMW no ones heard of your game so you resort to name dropping off of your voice actors resumes.
If the biggest takeaway from the reveal is the pedigree of its voice actors, you really have to question the products quality.
I mean...look at it. It's a 20 dollar throwaway title from the depths of steams underbelly being flipped for the switch. Another piece of crap for the eshop pile. Next.
Doesn't matter how terrible a company they are. They own too many easy to flip ips that every casual in the world will buy. Namely sports games.
Blame our peers for what's bad in games. It's their fault. Blame the dumb kid that wants a new call of duty every year. Blame the soccer mom who unwittingly bought Anthem for their kid. Blame the idiotic tv spots that prey on children and parents ignorance. Blame shill media for scoring bad games well. The list goes on. Gaming isn't crap because of EA etc. It's crap because there's too many uninformed consumers willingly giving them money.
I wonder why so popular in Japan. Do they have more or better games than we do?
I read these articles on a daily basis about switch sales and momentum but I'm not seeing why. I bought one and I'm struggling to find any games that are of quality and priced accordingly.
Portability isn't a selling feature of the software. So what games are people playing that they needed one so bad?
Ok so Zelda and Mario in 2017/8 Check.
A handful of wiiU asset flips. Check.
Square soft peddling final fantasy nostalgia at full price. Check
Enough no name shovelware to fill a landfill. Check
a bunch of afterthought games that have already been played on better hardware for less money up to 10+ years ago. Check
It's amazing how much spin they must pay for. The shill media army that helps perpetuate this rhetoric must not be cheap. Even though Nintendo has a million strikes against them that other companies would burn for.....their shills keep pumping out positive reviews and articles.
The funniest part of watching consoles evolve over 40 years is the ridiculous amount of brand loyalty from people. None of these companies are your friend. They'd steal candy from a baby if they could and have their army of shill partners spin it into a positive.
Still waiting for this amazing library I keep hearing about on a daily basis. What's Nintendo done since 2017? A smash bros game with non functional online and yoshi game with difficulty for toddlers at full msrp. Oh sorry and a bunch of cardboard.
Give it a rest with the praise already. Did it ever occur to anyone that the switch is the only modern handheld and that's why it's selling so well in Japan?
No we don't need more arcade party games and drip fed nes games to justify the subscription cost.
What we need is good quality servers to connect to. That's what justifies the cost. The performance and quality of your network. If nintendo is going to take shortcuts like they did with smash bros. Peer to peer solution, no amount of freeware will fix it.
While fortnite is the primary reason for epics recent clout, the aggressive nature of buyouts and exclusivity deals are more likely because they were bought by the world's largest game company, a Chinese conglomerate.
I have no problems with Nintendo getting aggressively taken over. So many other companies would do a better job with their ips.
I thought it was a shame that vivendi didn't get Ubisoft. A takeover could have only made them better without the greedy frenchmen at the helm.
Seriously? 5 dislikes for stating a legit criticism and fact.
You're paying the same amount of money today as you did when FF12 first released on the ps2 (10-20 more today depending on where you live). I would rather just have a modern sequel for those prices.
I don't have an issue with the likes of Square Enix wasting their resources on flipping old games. I do have an issue when they use the hardware's portability as their main selling feature and use it to justify the outrageous price points.
Portability isn't a feature of any game. It's a feature of the console that we've already purchased. It can't not be portable.
It's like an automotive place selling you repurposed (remastered) parts and the main selling feature is that they fit on your car.....wow!

Leaderboards are a waste of time and are being used as an excuse for their ineptitude and lack of effort.
The primary draw of a builder game is to share your creations with and challenge your friends NOT play solo to climb a compromised leaderboard.
Re: Rumour: Multiple Witcher 3 Listings For Nintendo Switch Appear Online
As much as I like the witcher series and CDPR, I can't get excited for all these ports of old games.
Very few of them are ever priced accordingly. They never account for important things like;
Now, without using portability as a selling feature, tell me why I would want this version.
Re: Rumour: New Ubisoft IP Supposedly Leaked Ahead Of E3 2019
Ubilost
Scary.
Re: Video: Let's Play Realm Royale On The Nintendo Switch
@In_Ex_Fan
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 25th)
I'm on my 70th hour of octopath traveller and no signs of stopping. One of the few switch games that was worth the price.
Re: Once Again, EA Angers Switch Fans By Falsely Advertising FIFA 19 Content
I'm ok with half effort ports. Everyone else seems to be.
But at least charge accordingly. If the game runs at a lower resolution, has inferior frame rate and has less content, it isn't worth the same price or more than the other versions.
Nintendo needs to start enforcing this. Release sloppy second ports and flips all you want but be honest about it and be reasonable with pricing.
Re: Disgaea Developer Nippon Ichi Software Facing Serious Financial Troubles
Re: There's No Need To Worry About Paid DLC Or Microtransactions In Team Sonic Racing
Good. DLC is a cancer.
Re: Reminder: Castlevania Anniversary Collection Is Available Now, And Here's The Full List Of Games
Thanks.
Re: Project Nimbus: Complete Edition Takes The Mecha Action Fight To Daemon X Machina
I'm glad they waste half the runtime of these trailers reminding me that my expensive console can be played without the dock.
That's like saying;
"Our game has audio"
"Our game uses the switch hardware"
"Our game supports the A button"
Don't use the hardware as a checkbox, the hardware goes without saying. What is your game about and why should I buy the switch version?
Re: Talking Point: Does The Nintendo Switch Game Voucher Programme Offer Value For Money?
Hey look! More table scraps completely unrelated to quality, lag free online gaming.
Getting tired of saying this nintendo.....
If you want to sell me a subscription to access features in a game i already paid for, make THAT feature BETTER.
Get it Yet?
Fix the actual service you're asking us to pay for and then worry about supplementing it with other features.
Re: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order File Size Revealed
I dont get the concern about file size with games like these. Anyone whos played the originals know it has the replay value of a fart and you will likely wrap it in 1 or 2 sittings.
It's a rental at best or just delete it when you're done. Problem solved. Jesus.
Re: Reminder: Three New NES Games Hit Switch Today, Plus A Special Version Of Star Soldier
"They just keep coming" - rofl
Way to spin a mediocre and paltry offering.
They should split online and retro into 2 separate things and do both of them right. Instead of doing both poorly.
Online players don't necessarily care about retro games and visa versa. We shouldn't be paying for both if we don't want both.
2 completely different demographic of players being forced to supplement each other's paid services.
Re: Video: 7 Minutes Of New Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order Gameplay
Some of these comments though....
Re: Discord App For Switch Would 'Need Nintendo's Blessing'
Why bother adding a voice app to a system that doesn't have proper inputs for modern headsets? Optical? Usb? Dolby digital?
Add all the apps you want, it won't
magically make the switch support a modern headset.
It's not the lack of software that's the problem. Its the I/O,
Re: Sega Ages Line Struggling To Appeal In Japan, Interest Overseas Better Than Expected
@MetalGear_Yoshi
Re: Horizon Zero Dawn And Mass Effect Actors Star In New Switch RPG Masquerada: Songs And Shadows
Next.
Re: EA Brings Its Cheaper 'Best Hits' Range To Switch In Japan, Starting With FIFA 19
Re: Japanese Charts: Nintendo Switch Is Already On The Verge Of Surpassing PS4's Lifetime Sales
Re: Nintendo Hints At Further Switch Online Exclusives Following Tetris 99
No we don't need more arcade party games and drip fed nes games to justify the subscription cost.
What we need is good quality servers to connect to. That's what justifies the cost. The performance and quality of your network. If nintendo is going to take shortcuts like they did with smash bros. Peer to peer solution, no amount of freeware will fix it.
Re: Nintendo President Comments On The Risks Of A Potential Hostile Takeover
@Doktor-Mandrake
Re: Review: Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age - This Is How You Handle A Remaster
@Dang69
