As has become tradition, another batch of NES games has now arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online app. Three 'new' games and one extra bonus await.
As promised by Nintendo last week, the three main new additions are Donkey Kong Jr., Clu Clu Land and VS. Excitebike. Simply update your app to see them pop up in your game library.
You'll also find that an SP version of Star Soldier has been added. This special version of the game has you starting from Stage 8 with the ability to shoot in five directions and with a defensive shield at your disposal.
Will you be giving any of these a whirl today? Which game are you most excited to try out? Let us know in the usual spot.

And they lie again to stop doing NES.
It's a crime we haven't gotten Bubble Bobble yet!!!
@redd214 Didn't expect to see that game mentioned. lol
It's honestly hard to play DK Jr knowing Nintendo rereleased it as a gameboy game and watch collection. I feel like the physics are better in that version.
@redd214 @Enigminator Sorry to ask but what is Bubble Bobble??
@redd214 the best couch co-op game everrrrrr! I would love this classic to hit the Switch, even though it will prob be the 10th version I own ha!
@Enigminator lol, I got lots of nostalgia with BB. I think it was the 3rd or 4th game we got for the NES back when a game would have to last you 6 months haha. My brother and I played the crap out of it!
@ShinyUmbreon look it up on YouTube
Ohhh Thanks @redd214
@ShinyUmbreon one of the greatest games of all time - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bubble_Bobble
I love the NES app, and I’ve put many hours into it so far....but man, this is a disappointing update. I’ve never played VS. Excitebike, so maybe I’ll find some fun in that one.
So Much people know you @redd214 And I didn't know you or even why people like you.
@ShinyUmbreon When did anyone from Nintendo say that they were going to "stop doing NES"? Did I miss something?
@Galarian_Lassie Couple months before..
Well, this answers my question. I was wondering if they added new NES games, and couldn't remember. May give Vs. Excitebike a go if my friend is up to it.
@ShinyUmbreon ummmm okay lol, not quite sure what you're saying there but I appreciate your reply
Your welcome I guess?
@ShinyUmbreon from what I remember they said they were going to stop adding games EVENTUALLY. Since the number of games is limited. I do t remember ninty saying they were going to stop soon
@redd214
Please please please... 😆
@ShinyUmbreon Source? All I could find was Reggie saying things like "We haven’t even made the full library of NES games available yet." (Implying that Nintendo won't stop releasing NES games until they've rereleased the entire library of the NES or at the very least the entire easy to rerelease/license library)

@YessMasster @Galarian_Lassie One at a time please I hate when I get double chat on.
It'll never happen, but every month I hope for Little Nemo: The Dream Master.
2 years on and this is still the best they can do for the online subscription? I won't be renewing mine
@ShinyUmbreon Its an arcade type game. Co-op. You play as dragons who blow bubbles to catch enemies that turn into food for points and items. Its pretty fun.
@Tempestryke Thanks for telling me but I Already look it up..
Another week, another boring selection of NES games
I won’t be revisiting Clu Clu Land. The NES Remix levels were enough.
@redd214 Talk to Square Enix, they own Taito's back catalog now.
Nobody cares.
Wait, did we even get the original Excitebike? Odd.
Where are the Natsume games? They’ve got to be the easiest third party Nintendo can contact for their games. It’s all a cryin shame
"They just keep coming"
Truer words have never been said... for a weekly schedule, that is.
Which the current NESflix schedule is very much not.
I have the Arcade Archives DK game, but how about adding the DK NES ROM that added in the Cement Factory level.
I’m so bad at Star Soldier that I can easily turn “certain victory on Stage 8” into floating space debris in mere seconds.
@ShinyUmbreon You just misunderstood their statement.... "Eventually" is the key word
@PlayedNSlayed in Oct 2019 makes 1 year for nes online lol.have no idea where u got 2 years from
Clu Clu Land is an NES game I never played on my own NES, but enjoyed a bit as my first NES game unlocked in Animal Crossing. Will be fun to play for a bit.
I remember vs. excitebike in the arcades, so I'm curious what the home console version is like.
I play so little of these NES games, they don't even register on my profile stats. Bit like those B/W movies nobody watches on the BBC.
Please add more multiplayer games, especially simultaneous multiplayer, even up to 4 players, like Gauntlet 2 or Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road
"They just keep coming" - rofl
Way to spin a mediocre and paltry offering.
They should split online and retro into 2 separate things and do both of them right. Instead of doing both poorly.
Online players don't necessarily care about retro games and visa versa. We shouldn't be paying for both if we don't want both.
2 completely different demographic of players being forced to supplement each other's paid services.
By this time in the Wii U's life we had not only SNES games, but also GBA games. We can talk all day about how it's different when they're doing a subscription service, but maybe if that's holding them back, they should offer the old Virtual Console on the side. This is getting ridiculous. The Switch is the perfect system for Virtual Console, this is really holding it back.
The wii had N64 games out the gate!
When will the exclusive Nintendo Switch Online members only deals come.
I wonder what Nintendo will do when September rolls around to entice the early adopters of NSO to stick around
@Slim1999 it may have only gone live in October last year, but they've had long before then to put it together. and this is the best they can do is the point
@ShinyUmbreon as far as games from that era of NES go, Bubblebobble is great.
@imgrowinglegs feels a lot better and more challenging than normal excitebike.
@peanutbuttercup drop excitebike 99 an infinite version that eliminates the slowest every 10 seconds? Or dr.mario 99 or Yoshi 99
Good God... at least lets make it to GameCube.
Rather spend the time downloading 3 old episodes of Seinfeld on my phone for the bus.
I'm predicting the first 3 SNES titles next month, which will be announced at E3. They've already dropped most, if not all, of the major 1st Party NES titles. Not sure what more they can really do here.
Boring, boring AND we already have arcade archives Dk Jr
Remember when the Wii got such games as Bomberman Hero, Kirby's Dream Land 3(twice)? ...Yeah.
Even so, NES games are not available to the competition so Nintendo still has the upper hand!
After playing NES Remix it kind of puts me off wanting to play the original games were getting this month.
It's funny how people love to complain about NES games. Back during the Virtual Console releases, there were a ton of complaints about NES games being overpriced. Here's the solution. We get a growing library with our online subscription for a reasonable yearly fee. I know people love to gripe, myself included, but this is getting tired. It's not like Nintendo is forcing anyone to buy their service.
Kool...I shall be giving these a spin soon. As someone who completely ignored the NES in favour of the Master System I can appreciate what treats were on there now. I would have never bought any of these on virtual console, I appreciate being able to dip in and out of them for peanuts.
Seems to be the worst week for the nes online games so far. None of these seem interesting.
Yawn! I already have DK JR and excitebike from Hamster thank you very little! The pace continues to be horrible!
I’m just waiting on the Castlevania Collection, and got Mario Maker 2 completely paid off. The NES service is getting a little cold, and probably gonna get colder and dustier for me. Not that these are bad games, I just have a full library of other things to play. I smashed my Marios and Zeldas, and revisited Startropics for a little while. Hope we get Startropics 2 and a few others... but the hype of the slow dripped NESflix might have reached its peak. I nolonger have energy to be negative about it. Think the biggest problem, still for me, even with a LAN cable, is all the horrible lag while trying to play stuff like Mario 3 with an online buddy.
I've wet myself from excitement.
@JohnnyC I didn't realize I needed this in my life until you mentioned it.
I really hope ‘Zombies Ate My Neighbors’ comes to Nintendo Switch!!!
one of these days theyre gonna announce something for NOS thats actually exciting. like, it's bound to happen right? theres no way NES will be their only offer forever
@Harmonie
I agree 100%! I have no reason to have a sub but would love to play nes/snes and hopefully others on my switch, but better self curation.
@HexagonSun
But at least with vc you could create your own collection and you wouldn't have to give them up after s certain period of time nor would you need to subscribe. You pay once for a game and your done. With switch online you pay for the same games over and over, even if new games are added you are still paying for the same older ones as well! Wouldn't just having the ones you want to play on your system be better?!
@GameOtaku I get what you're saying. Since the VC was digital only, and bound to a single console, you don't really get to keep them forever. You can only keep them as long as your console survives and you back up your games. For the price of four VC NES games I get a growing library of games for a year. I don't know about you, but I ended up spending hundreds on the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U VC. Often buying the same games again on different platforms. In the long run this service is way cheaper. I'm hopeful we'll eventually get SNES and Gameboy games on the service. I would gladly pay for a premium service that offered N64, GameCube and Wii games. Though I could see Nintendo preferring to remaster GameCube and Wii games. I really want N64 on Switch. I can be patient and wait. I'm sure they'll come in some way eventually. The service platform definitely isn't for everyone. You've got to have interest in several titles for it to be worth it.
Dk jr is gonna get played so hard and long I'm probably gonna get proposed to...
@HexagonSun
The best solution as I've been preaching for a while now is a unified vc for 3ds/wiiu/switch. For the sub you could play anything as long as you have the sub and if you don't your purchases rollover and you can buy and curate your own collection. Wouldn't that solve mostly all of the problems?
😂🤣 oh Nintendo, you kill me by pretending to release this shovelware 😂😂
C'mon seriously though, what's the new Nintendo games this month?
I love NES, but these special versions suck.
If kids can't handle NES because it's just too hard, then that's fine. No need to dumb the games down.
@Galarian_Lassie Looks like they came to their sense. NES is great. I can't wait for SNES.
@GameOtaku I agree and I would love to see something along those lines, but I'm doubtful it would happen. I think the whole reason Nintendo got rid of the VC is because it diminishes the allure of indie games. It's in Nintendo's best interest to keep indie developers happy. When there are well known and loved VC games that beat the quality of indie games, what do you think most people will choose? What I would like to see is collections of Nintendo's retro catalog sold on cartridge. Then I would really own it.
@HexagonSun
I'd counter that the amount of indies a week is ridiculous and most of them are subpar. You may have some gems but mostly coal. $5 for a game I have nostalgia for warts and all Vs a newer Indy title for the same price that's just a quick cash grab. Everything on the shop is competing with everything else. If it is a quality game tge sales will show for themselves (granted if a bad game goes on a deep sale it will hit the charts.).
@GameOtaku No doubt there's a lot of garbage on the eShop. There's also a lot of quality games. I still think the point stands. Indie developers don't want to compete with Nintendo's own back catalog. It could scare away developers from even risking an eShop release. VC games are at the top of the charts for Wii, 3DS, and Wii U digital stores. There are still other ways we could see these games released. Mini consoles and NSO are a couple. Compilation collections could be another. As much as I would love to see all my favorite Nintendo games from past consoles release on Switch, I just don't think it will be in the form of the Virtual Console.
@HexagonSun
I'd personally love to see a nes collection of all the licensed games on one cart, it would only be a few gb at most!
