Team17 has revealed that it has added The Game Kitchen's upcoming hack and slash game, Blasphemous, to its game label. The partnership will see the game launch on Nintendo Switch later this year.
In the game, players take on the role of The Penitent One in the dark gothic land of Cvstodia, where a foul curse known as 'The Miracle' has fallen. You'll need to explore a "nightmarish world of twisted religion", discovering its many secrets hidden deep inside and using combos and executions to destroy the hordes of grotesque monsters and bosses held within.
Here's a quick blurb:
Prepare for a descent into a dark and punishing Metroidvania world where fast-paced, skilled combat combines with a deep and evocative narrative core. You will play as The Penitent One, a sole survivor of the massacre of the ‘Silent Sorrow’. Exploring the nightmarish world of Cvstodia and unlocking the hellish secrets within, only you can free it from a twisted fate and reach the origin of your torment.
An exact release date hasn't been set just yet so we'll make sure to keep an eye out for more news going forward.
Until then, though, why not let us know what you think in the comments below? Do you have high hopes for this one?

Nice, been looking forward to this. I still don't know how to pronounce the name of the world though. Cvstodia... Wat.
@Blizzia Been waiting for this one too!
Yup, I've had my eye on this one for quite a while now too! Looks great!
It looks great. I just want it to be a longer game and have many bosses.
“This year” is as vague as “from today to six months ahead if not delayed to 2020”.
That said, I can’t wait to play it.
Was afraid this game became vapor ware. Glad it’s still coming. I’ll be there, day one. Love the look of it.
Loved this from the first time I saw it! Can't wait!
@Blizzia in Latin, v was used instead of u. That said, I believe that Cvstodia should be pronounced as Custodia.
Awesome, it's been on my radar for a while. I love it, I have high hopes with this one.
@doomista yep, definitely.
The dark souls of 2d platformers
@Abeedo See also: Hollow Knight
(Which, if you're interested in this game and havent played Hollow Knight yet... get thee to the eShop!)
@Tandoori That was the bloodborne of 2d platformers
Hmmm, if there is a physical (yes back to this again) I might be interested
@Bunkerneath I checked their twitter and they said that they will work on physical after the release and there will be a physical upgrade for backers.
I'm looking forward to this one since the first time I watched a trailer long ago. Hope there's a physical edition as well, looks outstanding!
This looks great! I'll be picking this up as long as it's digital only.
Another 2d sidescroller with pixel art. Wow such retro. much talent.
When do we draw a line between retro homage and just plain amateurish junk?
Nintendo eshop is like the garage sale of video games. It's like going to a flea market and having some pretentious hippie try and sell me a jar of organic artisinal jam....and then try and justify the exorbitant cost by telling you all the passionate hours that were put into it.
I don't care how hard you worked, how passionate you are or how much love went into it. If it's a no name retro bait, it has no business selling for what it does.
Maybe if it was harder to get this stuff published/greenlit, they'd be encouraged to work together to deliver a better game. Instead of 20 small crappy games.
Should be way stricter criteria if your software is going to rub elbows with triple A in the eshop.
@Itzdmo WTF are you talking about? This game is really good. Are you implying it's amateurish? Don't be so ignorant.
@MisterMan
Absolutely. It's 2019. How many of these no name indie pixel bait titles do you need?
Pixel art is amateurish because it's not being done out of irony or humor or homage. It's being used because these devs lack talent eith modern techniques and game design.
It's the very definition of amateur.
Looking forward to this
@Blizzia I honestly have no idea, but I think the "v" is probably pronounced like it's a "y".
In the game, dark souls bloodborne, evil cult and ritual sacrifice, darkness, darkness in the land of rubbish name. Honestly, used to read into cult and occult all the time so Dark Souls law was bearable, but this sounds hastily written. Game itself looks alright, though.
@Itzdmo Or maybe it's just a style you don't care for. Which is a fine and valid opinion to have but there's no need to wrap it up in some declaration as if you're some kind of revered authority on the subject. You clearly don't understand the context of this game, why people are excited about it, or the appeal of the style for many people.
I will grant you that there are a lot of mediocre games on the eShop that seem to have simply jumped on the pixel art bandwagon that don't use the art style well or in any meaningful way. This isn't one of them. Maybe you're still sick of seeing pixel art altogether - which, again, is fine for you - but maybe get over yourself and let other people enjoy things, or at least provide a take with something of substance.
@Itzdmo Glad to know you have bad taste. I mean, it must be sooo easy for indie creators to create, design, and render a 3D model for a game and make it up to scale while also making an open-ended sandbox world with beautiful textures and details. Even YOU can do it, right? There's amateur hour(Those mega man clones that cost $10) And then there's this game that's been made by a team of professionals in the business and has been in development for at least 5+ years. Next you're gonna tell me dead cells was amateur and Celest was pixel art trash.
I get if you're tired of the influx of 2D platforming games with this style, but give credit where credit is due. This is Super Castlevania 4 tier excellence in the art category. Gameplay will be another story once released.
@Itzdmo Honestly I could understand your posture (understand, not agree) but then you added that last bit about "rubbing elbows with AAA" give me a break.
Literally the only difference between an indie game and a "AAA" game is the size of the wallet involved, and AAA games are just as likely, who am I kidding? Are far more likely to fall into the traps of lazy design because they mostly rely on the sheer brute force of their economic power, how do you justify AAA gems such as Fallout 76, Anthem, or any yearly release snore fest like Far cry? Games more concerned with shoving themselves down the collective public throat than actually being any sort of fun, or having any kind of interesting design.
And as the recent remake galore tells us (Crash, Spyro, Medevil etc.) They are definitely not above nostalgia pandering.
That is the Crux of AAA games, they rely on either the size of their wallets or the perpetually turning wheels of popularity ala CoD, FIFA or even Pokemon.
Actual creative design is a proverbial miracle and only exists to be exploited until any joy it could bring is destroyed cough dead space cough Resident evil 4 cough
Indies for better or worse actually need to get noticed, since they can't afford to brute Force their way to collective awareness nor can they get constant shilling from games media (at least, not until they do get noticed).
Pixel art is fine, graphics are literally the lowest rung in the game totem. Minecraft is the best selling game ever and it looks like somebody barfed on an Ikea warehouse. And as for pixel art, undertale looks like crap and it took a gigantic piss on The phantom pain.
Stop being a clueless and needlessly resentful and go back to playing FIFA or whatever it is that floats your boat.
Wow! This looks great.
@Tandoori @Abeedo What about Salt and Sanctuary? That was the Souls of platformers imho.
Game really looks great. Not a fan of the traffic cone helmet tho...
@Vepra Every game is just a copy of Dark souls
Also traffic cone looks sick
@Abeedo I actually didnt mean it that way. Salt & Sanctuary to me was different enough to be just a clone. By souls of platformers I ment that to me it had that high quality of souls games.
I just saw gameplay of this and it looks great! It looks right to compete with the best of the genre.
@Starcakes nicely put.
