The rumour about The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt coming to the Nintendo Switch has seemingly re-emerged. Yes, that's right - it seems like Geralt of Rivia might actually be on his way to the hybrid system after all.
Following on from a previous retailer listing earlier this year, a user over on ResetEra by the name of "Jim_Cacher" has allegedly found photographic evidence of The Witcher 3: Game Of The Year Edition for Nintendo Switch. According to the user's source, the game will be released on Nintendo's platform this September. Here's the translated text from the below image :
"[Breaking! Witcher 3 GOTY edition is coming to Switch in September.] According to a reliable source from distributor, Witcher 3 GOTY edition is coming to Switch in September. Chinese localization exclusive to Asia version."
In addition to this, multiple sellers on the Chinese online shopping website Taobao.com are supposedly already listing the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Noticeably the box art is on display as well:
There are also theories this could be a potential cloud version or a title designed for a more powerful Switch model.
Grab some salt and tell us what you think in the comments below.
Please let this be real and let it be a good port 🙏
This must be through streaming and if not. If they are able to port this with good framerate and okay graphics. Then any company after this who have a bad port cough Ubisoft cough Should go and be ashamed of themselves.
It’d really suck if it’s just a streaming service version.
Hopefully this does not cloud support as it is quite an old game now, but if it does come to the Switch I am all for it as I have only had a small sample of the original game back on the PC.
I would absolutely buy this game again if it released on Switch and ran reasonably well. It was one of the few Xbox One games I genuinely enjoyed when I played it. I would be thrilled to have it in my collection.
In before people say "Witcher 3 can't run on Switch" when GPD Win 2 can run it.
Streaming service with a case? Doesn’t sound right. But then again..a game with these graphics AND open world on the Switch doesn’t sound right either.
That being said, IF this is true, this will set a whole new standard for the Switch.
This game is so demanding on PS4 and X1 I’m sure any version of this on Switch will be a trainwreck
To be clear, this listing doesnt mention streaming whatsoever. In fact, it is a retail listing of a physical copy of the game.
With that being said, I don't believe this rumor. I think it is either a mistake or some clever trolling.
I really hope this is true. If I could choose just one port for Switch, it would be The Witcher 3.
Might as well bring Soul Calibur too while they are at it
Maybe it will be for Switch pro.
The only way I see this being done is giving the game a new art style or something, and remaking all those assets would be a nightmare, I'd imagine. I dunno', man, sounds crazy. If they pull it off, I'll support it.
I highly doubt this would be exclusive for a more powerful Switch. The current Switch will run this fine enough, and this seems like an E3 announcement if I ever saw one.
If this is real, I will absolutely flip my lid, but I do not believe for a second that it is real.
Highly doubt it if it's not could based.
Dang this is an exciting rumor. I wonder how this will turn out.
Ha... the GPD Win 2. If it wasn't so expensive, I would have one. I had the first one, and for what it was, it was pretty incredible. I remember people were impressed when Skyrim made its way to Switch... "Skyrim on the go!!!" while I was already playing it on the go on my GPD Win...
Thing is, the Tegra chipset in the Switch has a much more powerful GPU than the GPD Win 2, which can run the Witcher 3 (with some tweaks) at around 30fps. So, if they do a good job with the engine, I'm pretty sure they can come up with a decent port. Surely not rivaling the PS4 or XB1, but I'm pretty sure still decent enough to warrant playing.
Having seen what the GPD Win 2 can do, which, as I said, have an inferior GPU, I don't think games like these are an impossibility on the Switch.
I really doubt that. The Switch will explode if they attempt to run Witcher 3 on it.
I welcome a Witcher port any time.
Could this mean we might get Geralt in Smash? Kidding aside if this happens I almost grantee an SD card will be required for the DLC expansions. The Witcher 3 is a meaty game with just as meaty expansions so this game will last an average gamer a long time and worthy addition to the Switch's ever impressive catalog of 3rd party games.
If this is true of course. (I'm leaning to truth than fiction)
I have this on PS4, would buy again if I can bring this on the go as long as it is none of that streaming business
Digital Download only but with a case doesn't sound right ether @Kinpatsu but yet they exist.
Man, E3 might be even better than my high hopes already have already set.... I hope this is true
Instant buy for me. I have been reading the books prior to the Netflix series, and I would love to play the game on my switch!
@MrJuancho Be wary of spoilers though. The games take place after the books so keep an eye out for those if you want to remain unspoiled while reading the books.
I always take rumours with a (large) pinch of salt but I want this to be real just to see how they actually manage to port this game to the Switch.
@Indominus_B Damn, the only cool thing about you is your profile picture
Tried it on PC and I really didn't like it. 60fps and all that doesn't mean anything when Geralt controlled like doo-doo and combat sucked. Story and presentation are not enough for me to overlook the stiff gameplay.
That is very unpolitically correct @Indominus_B why would you assume he's been drinking? Maybe he lives in a State/Country where smoke or kratom is legal. To assume someone only drinks is not cool and unPC.
Oh yes... China. A country that is 100% genuine. No knock-offs or fakes there.
Oh boy the Panic Button meme again, they ported games running on highly optimized engines that ran at 60 FPS on PS4/Xbone making it far easier to optimize down to Switch while Witcher 3 frequency struggles at 30 FPS on PS4 even after countless patches. This would have to be done with serious compromises or effectively remaking the game to suit the hardware.
@Indominus_B nothing wrong with having too much to drink
the Witcher series is already pretty poorly optimized for medium-to-low tier PCs, so i feel very suspicious about this being real or good.
Hope this is true. For anyone who hasnt played the blood and wine expansion do so this instant. It is that good n has so much content it could nearly have been called the witcher 4.
@__Ret55 I loved Hearts of Stone! Huge fan of the play Dr. Faustus so that one definitely sent shivers down my spine! Slightly shorter than Blood and Wine, but just as good! I really hope this game comes to Switch just to play those glorious expansions again on the go!
Well if it is true that is another win for the Switch. Things like this make me think ahead. If nvidia can crank out a decent chip for the Switch 2 (it will still be weaker than the twins or the newtwins) then devs really won’t have an excuse for attempting parity. We might actually get back to multiplatform gaming before I die.
Which would be amazing because Switch is killing my interest in the twins.
Though I found the game pretty boring, this is great news! I know a lot of people have wanted this and this is a huge get on the switch if true. Fingers crossed for you guys!
I hope it will have graphics as good as Witcher 1 with stable 20 fps .
I've just hit 100 hours on the PC version with just Blood and Wine left. Easily one of the best games this generation.
@Snakesglowcaps i agree it shows how lazy some devs really are if their resorting to using cloud streaming and not building a switch port from the ground up.
I saw an article or a video (maybe gamexplain?) when a previous rumour of this being ported was doing the rounds. On PC you can turn the graphics down LOTs. The option is there. Perhaps that has some bearing on how feasible a port to the switch could be? I think it's possible!
On the one hand this sounds impossible. Then again, DOOM and Mortal Kombat 11 sounded impossible, so I guess anything is possible with the Switch!
One thing I'm confident of, if this is a port to the switch, it will be awesome. There is no way CD Project Red would allow their baby to release under any platform as a trainwreck. Still not sure if this is true, but if we find out it is....get excited.
@ilikeike thats because panic button and the mortal kombat 11 switch version developer took their time with the switch ports while ubisoft, crapcom and ea with fifa being lazy.
I never liked the combat from the previous games in the series. Still, it would be great if they make this happen for the people who enjoyed the games.
This will be some miracle on Switch, it was an early gen game so that'll help but it's going to have to be comprised to get it working well. It still struggles on base PS4/XBOX in areas and no matter what they do performance isn't going to be pretty. It's an amazing game so hopefully more get to play it but I'll stick to my Pro for this game.
If this runs well I'd probably get this.
Gwent would of been a no-brainer to release on Switch.
But if this is true I can see myself pouring another 200+ hours into this game. Farewell real world.
CDProjektRed struggled to get this game running at a solid 30fps on more powerful home consoles, so I don't really see a port of this ending well on a performance front. Who wants to play an open world game where every area performs like BotW's Korok Forest did at launch?
This is either true, or it's an elaborate troll.
I support this. Every gamer should get to experience The Witcher 3.
Next to Metroid 4, this might get introduced as a solid third party game for the Switch Pro.. Would sound good to me
Considering how the Switch is coming to China why won't they make a Witcher 3 for it. That's the biggest market for Nintendo coming. So I would say good for Nintendo making this venture it forced developers to get aboard or get off.
I played through this game on my Xbox One X (in 4K) on my LG OLED TV. Simply breathtaking. After checking out Digital Foundry's report on Assassin's Creed 3, I'm pessimistic about this news. Switch Pro, or not.
Great game. I have it on PC (the world is stunning)
This is worth the effort to port - but they really can not butcher the world.
Am I the only one who thinks Geralt for Smash would be possible? You can argue that he’s technically not a game character but I say that his video game adaption has diverged enough from his book version. So I think it should count
@Wexter You may be kidding but I think he should.
Nintendo has limited CPU- and GPU-clockspeed of the X1, right? What if Nintendo is removing this limit completely when the Switch is docked and make it higher when undocked.🤔
I never had time for big games like this until Switch came along. Somehow I've put in over 80 hours into Skyrim and more than 200 hours (yikes!) into Breath of the Wild. If the rumours are true (and if it's a competent port) I'll be on it like a car bonnet!
If you could only stream this game, then why would they have boxart and a special Switch design for it?
Witcher 3 on Switch will be so downgraded it'll look like Runescape.
@Entrr_username i rather them not stream it man that be lazy and they should just build the switch port from the ground up.
Without being a Debbie Downer this will look like ass on the switch at a playable frame rate.
Do you have play the first two to understand what's going on, though? I've never played a Witcher game and while I'm aware of its high reputation, I'll be steering clear if you need the first two for context.
While the switch could run this, with some heavy tweaks (theoretically), I just have a bad feeling this will end up like RE7.
@Entrr_username Nope it is true the games take place after the Witcher books. I know some people can be touchy about spoilers for things they are enjoying (in his case the books) so I thought it was a fair warning. Especially with Witcher 3 that explicitly drops in references from the books like Ciri and Yennefer that do directly reference adventures from the books he may not have read yet. (in fact all of Witcher 1 spoils the ending of the last book...)
But if he likes the books he will really enjoy the games! They are top quality content and tie in really well with the books. Even if Andrzej Sapkowski does not think so...
People you need to stop dreaming. Corridor-like DOOM is one thing but TW3 is on a whole new level. It’s cloud based or designed exclusively for an upgraded model (even then I find it hard to believe).
TW3 can’t run on the actual Switch.
@TheBigK Not really no. They do a good job of keeping each game self contained. You will run into characters who will reference previous adventures, but you get that in the first game because of the books.
I say you're fine just jumping in.
This is why I love the Switch so much. With CRPG/WRPGs announced for it like Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pillars of Eternity, and hopefully this, along with all the colorful Nintendo games and JRPGs, we get tons of variety in a library of games we can play anywhere. Love it.
Edit: Oh and if this is a real port, I'd like to see the real FFXV ported too, please, Square...
I really wonder how this will all turn out. Would be nice, but then again...
I'm taking this with a ton of salt like every other rumor, but I REALLY want this to be true.
Maybe it's the right time I finish it....
@Tyranexx , its the second time a Witcher 3 rumour appear... i think its a lot of smoke, too much for not including some meat.
The source is China? Pfffst. 🙄
@CorvoRevo i agree which is why we should wait for any type of info at e3 or something.
I can’t imagine this ever happening.
With that said I hope its true!! Witcher 3 on the go would be amazing! Day 1 purchases no questions asked!!!
In before people say "Witcher 3 can't run on Switch" when GPD Win 2 can run it.
1 I have a GPD Win 2, and it cannot run Witcher 3 on stock 7W profile (which even that is more power than Switch has in handheld mode). You have to overclock the system like crazy and use downgrade mods to even remotely obtain a playable framerate
2 Even if GPD Win 2 could run it on stock settings (which it can't) that doesnt mean Switch could, since even GPD Win 2 on stock outclasses the Switch
3 Witcher 3 can run on Switch regardless, because it would be a tailor made port for the system, not a PC port crammed onto a handheld it was never optimized for
This is the only game out right now that could topple Zelda off the top of my best games list. Played a few hours on xbox and loved it. Please be true. Even a cloud version would do.
@Kinpatsu They'll probably make a big announcement out of it, for us all then to realize it is a spiritual successor to Ark.
yes yes. dont worry, it will run.
must be a streamed game, i dont believe the switch is capable of running the witcher , there are so many beautifull details in that game, it would look plain ugly on the switch.
it also says, exclusive to asia.
@Entrr_username The original post stated he was reading the books. I was warning that user that the games spoil plot-points from the books either indirectly or directly (the entire plot of Witcher 1 spoils the ending to Lady of the Lake the last book in the series because it takes place just after Lady in the Lake). So, I was giving him fair warning to be aware of that fact about the games if he is still reading the books.
Yes you do not need to read the books to enjoy the games. But, if you are reading the books and enjoying them while playing the games and the games drop a massive spoiler like a known fact when you have not gotten there, some book readers might be a bit annoyed.
Just a small little tidbit to my fellow Witcher book readers out there who may have not tried the games yet.
@Wexter Ok I got super confused. Sorry about that.
Probably an E3 leak. And, why would they show off a box of a streaming only game?
yeah, probably something "relevant" like chinese GTA 8 and Call of Duty 15
you got a point:)
@Entrr_username That's okay it happens. No problem
@patbacknitro18 if that was the case, a new Nintendo Switch would have had a different name but these boxes clearly state "Nintendo Switch"
@PALversusNTSC I don't think streamed games get boxarts nor special Switch art. Plus it said that Chinese localization was exclusive to Asia. There was a French listing for Witcher 3 not too long ago
@PALversusNTSC Yeah, let's see if it turns out to be truth.
If it's cloud based I won't even consider it.
As much as I like the witcher series and CDPR, I can't get excited for all these ports of old games.
Very few of them are ever priced accordingly. They never account for important things like;
Now, without using portability as a selling feature, tell me why I would want this version.
Hmm. I've got this one ready to go on my ps4. I'm not nearly ready enough to start it though.
And therein lies the rub. Availability is no longer the issue with quality games; the priority for it to take precedence over other great games is.
I'm buying this, but for the 15 bucks I'd pay anywhere else. Then let's see how much the instant, portable play means for me.
But if this is a 30 dollar port, I'm still out here waiting for pikmin, playing some monster Hunter.
i would love to see them bring the first 2 for the switch which they should start with that before making any decision on bringing 3 over.
You are my hero. When I grow up. I will become a troll just like you😍
@Itzdmo Why wouldn't you use portability to justify the purchase of a Switch game? Portability is the main reason to buy most third party games on Switch if you own multiple platforms.
For some people, the "better" version of a game is going to be the one that's not tethered to a TV.
If you don't agree, then you're probably not the target audience for these ports.
I don't see why it would need more performance.
GTA V (to take a title of similar scope) ran on the Xbox 360, and we all know the Wii U was already slightly more powerful than that, and the Switch is even more.
It's just a matter of optimization and how scalable the games was originally designed.
Not that it will look good on the Switch, but I guess the Switch's audience doesn't really care about that.
@erv complete game edition with all DLC is well worth $30
@Indominus_B you’re drinking way too much of that Nintendo kool-aid brotha. Be realistic.. it'll run on switch, but be a massive downgrade in every area visually. If it’s a stream game then ok I guess, but a non stream game will extremely downgraded. Take you’re goggles off for once 👍
Currently playing FFX on my Switch. It’s so fun and weird and inventive.
Then I read this article and remembered how much I hated the Witcher 3 and that awful cliche Gerald with the nine hundred immediately needed controls I had to learn. So much running and not really knowing where I was going next.
Happy for those who love these games, but most western gaming (aside from Arkham and indies) really leave me cold.
If CDProject Red is able to port this... I will have no chill when putting on blast companies that refuse to port their games to Switch. This thing is a ram hog and will be amazing if they can get it to run competently.
I will believe it if and when, and only if and when, it is actually confirmed by the developer.
It would have to be a virtual remake (maybe "demake") to make a game like this run on the Switch well.
Already have it on Xbox.
Haven't finished it. It was one of those top rated and critically acclaimed games I bought on sale like RDR 2 and didn't care for.
If it comes to the Switch good for the Switch I guess?
@Mycroft I mean NintendoLife can’t control what people are going to say
@Indominus_B You really believe that an open world at this size with lots of vegetation and the hairworks physics will work on a puny older cpu of tegra x1 with 1.2 ghz (stock clock) and 4 gb of ram?
It's probably the pocket edition.
Brought for 7$CAN on ps4 a while ago. I understand the portability and the cost of putting the game on Switch but please sell it for max 30$CAN not 60$CAN.
@Indominus_B just because they know the system doesn't mean it run well on the switch botw in korok forest runs like poo Nintendo still did not fixed it.
it's gonna be a cloud edition. no way the switch can handle the witcher 3. cdprojektred had trouble making the game run at 30fps on the xbox one and playstation 4. and they are more powerful.
this has to be some sort of troll.
@I_am_Done Keep in mind the PS4 and xbox versions are effectively medium pc settings. they had performance issues because they tried doing lots of extra stuff. like the biggest performance issues actually came out of trying to support the "4K" console patches.
I could see a switch version, which would far more resemble low PC settings.Like the game is gonna have low view distance and greatly reduce fogs and other effects. Probably far less wind too.
This same site also lists Sea of Thieves for PS4:
Yeah, this is fake.
People still really don't get it.
The Switch is a computer. It can run any game if you put effort into porting the game. Sure it's not as powerful as the XBOX ONE or PS4. But you can also say that the XBOX ONE isn't as powerful as the PS4, stile the XBOX ONE gets all the same multiplats. And they play just fine on it.
And after looking at the games ported by panic button. They all run great on the Switch.
Bring it on i play through it again.
I would love to get this on Switch if this turned out to be true. A lot people here seem to think the Switch couldn't handle it. As an owner of both a PS4 for 4 years and a Switch for 2 years: The Switch is absolutely the more powerful hardware.
@Atmosfear Really, this port probably would be like porting Witcher 2 to the Xbox 360 that was 6 year old hardware when it came out. Which they did btw. Anyways, with redone character models, less NPCs, and some reduced extraneous details and draw distance...sure it could run. Modders got it running on similarly specced hardware.
@Indominus_B No doubt it CAN run, but the question remains in what state it would be delivered. TW3 is built in a custome engine developed by CDProject Red. Other big current-gen titles running on the Switch are made using Unreal Engine, Unity or id Tech. The makers of UE and iT have had close relationships with Nintendo to develop the scalability needed to support the Switch. REDengine was not built with the Switch in mind at all, so having it power a monster of a game like TW3 on a system it's not designed to run on inspires some understandable scepticism.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for this, hard. I've spent more time with TW3 on PC than I care to admit, and I'd buy a decent-looking and smoothly-running Switch version in half a heartbeat. But pulling off a version like that would be mighty impressive indeed, given the amount of work it most certainly would be.
@Bart_T I'm all for the hype but this is really what's gonna stop this from happening, the Switch doesn't support the custom engine used by CDProjekt.
If true, than Switch will be my first time playing Skyrim, Dragon's Dogma (currently playing), and Witcher 3. On a Game Boy, basically. And once I can play the Link's Awakening remake, it's full circle. Gaming, for me, started with Link's Awakening on the fat Game Boy.
Massive if true but it won't make me run out and buy another copy, great if you e never owned a PS4/XB1 though
I don't think they can do worse than Rime or Ark. I would buy it if I didn't already own it on PS4
@TheBigK no you don’t- I recently played e before part 2 and whereas there are a few references you may be slightly confused at, it’s totally playable on its own. I will say this though- stick with it. When I first started the clunky controls made me almost stop playing. However, once the world opens up you become completely absorbed by these incredible characters. I put in over 100 hours without even touching the DLC, then went and bought Witcher 2- also great but way, way shorter- and have also read one of the books.
2 words that can make this truly work - PANIC BUTTON
If this is real I'd call any dev [removed] with "the Switch is too weak for their game" statements
@I_am_Done either that, or having Panic Button work on it. Those mad men are geniuses at porting things to switch. If it looks half as good as DOOM on switch does, I'm happy to play it on the go.
The normal trick of dropping a 1080/60 PS4 title to a 720/30 Switch port isn't an option. Moreover this is a game which struggles to maintain 30fps on a PS4. If this is really a thing, it will require some drastic, extreme graphical cutbacks.
Compare the world complexity of The Witcher 3 to Breath of the Wild. That's what they'd have to do to it, and more, as the underlying way the world is built in The Witcher requires a far higher poly count.
@Aya-chan You are 100% incorrect. The Switch's Tegra GPU varies in speed depending on whether it's docked or not. It maxes out at 0.75 TFlop. The XO is 1.3TFlop. The PS4 is 1.8TFlop. The PS4 Pro is 4.2TFlop. The Xbox One X is 6TFlop.
Add to that the slow CPU (4 core ARM A57 at 1ghz) and that it has only HALF of the system RAM of the XO and PS4, and you have a system which is more of a half way house between the PS3 and the PS4.
During E3 they are going to rename this game to Switcher 3, it's going to be huge.
@Mgene15 I don't care about the downgrade as long as it plays well either on TV and on the go. That is not a reason for avoiding the port as there is an audience for those games
I got this game on GOG when they had it on sale, but I just haven't gotten arount to playing it.
A Switch release would be much more my style.
Why would a physical box leak for a cloud only game. If this is real, its definitely for a full physical release, and if it is real. Well done CD project red, must be one hell of a game to port to switch
The myths busted:
1. Not enough Power
2. GPU too weak
3....wait.... not enough games....
4. 4k - 60fps (this most can't do constantly to start with on any consoles as opposed to a PC Gaming RIG/Laptop)
Both busted already just look at the games coming out and that tells you Developers are going to make it for it. Everyone likes to thinks it can't but that hasn't stopped Switch from outselling ps4 that by itself tells you developers want the Switch to run their games. Ports or Re-Mastered for Switch is coming and Trolling isn't going to stop it. I for one would welcome a Witcher 3 on Switch. Now only if they would put NeverWinter Nights 1 & 2 on Switch I would play it again. Online/Stream is pathetic as your streaming limited to ISP bandwidth and throttles so don't give me how fast your Streaming is until the ISP throttles then you will think differently.
If this would run well and look halfway decent then I’d double dip in a heartbeat. I won’t get my hopes up though.
Will only need witcher 1 & 2 for my switch, i have Witcher 3 on my ps4 pro. The game will never work well with switch.
