Re: Hardware Review: The Hyperkin SupaBoy SFC Is A Portable SNES For Under £100

GauBan

Bit of advice to anyone looking to buy a SupaBoy SFC. The first batch of SupaBoy SFC unit seemed to have a issues with QC. I had two units from Amazon.com both of which had different faults. Amazon then stopped selling their stock because of it.

I then orderd with ShopTo as soon as they opened up pre-orders. Received that one a couple of weeks back and it works fine. Infact I had my unit in use at the weekend at a local Nintendo Players event running my Sufami Turbo.

Re: Hyperkin's New SupaBoy Has Superior Coloured Buttons And A 4:3 Screen Option

GauBan

I imported one of these from Amazon US at the SFC models launch.

That had a bent pin in the middle of of the cartridge slot. So "Pin perfect technology" my arse. So they sent me a placements. This one didn't work providing only blue screen even with a fully charged battery.

Amazon then refused to send me another unit sighting that the back they had was bad and removed their selling from the site for a week but still allowed other sellers to have their ones on there.

With the UK release date set for the 9th of March I have now ordered one from a UK supplier that I trust.

Re: Hyperkin's New SupaBoy Has Superior Coloured Buttons And A 4:3 Screen Option

@Anti-Matter @thesilverbrick the console is region free for all NTSC and PAL games. There is a switch on top to change the clock speed to match the games you are playing.

It does work with Super GameBoy 1&2 and the Sufami Turbo, SNES cheat devices and flash carts (For playing SNES games).

You can not use the GBA or MegaDrive/Genesis adapters in portable mode as they need to have a screen to connect to bypassing the Super Nintendo's own video out port. There is no way to get these video outputs into the SupaBoy.

Re: Hackers Turn The Nintendo Switch Into A Functioning Linux Tablet

GauBan

I think Nintendo need to run with this. Allow people to have a separate SD card that can be a Linux system. You just need to swap the SD card when switching between Linux and Switch OS.

They could then market the Switch as a Dock-able tablet to replace a low end PC. The same way that Sony originally allowed Linux on the PS3.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Weighs In On Bayonetta 2 Switch Improvements

GauBan

Massive fan Platinum Games and the Bayonetta series. The house will have 2 copies of the Japanese LE edition just so that me and the misses don't fight over the games.

As for if I'm double dipping. Bayonetta 2 yeah (As long as you count both Switch copies as one). But for Bayonetta 1 these will the 6th time I get a version of if.

Re: Video: A Speedrunner Has Completed Super Mario World In Under A Minute

GauBan

@JHDK who cares about a dying franchise that Disney are committed to run into the ground with massive errors in all it's science. #BeacuseScience

Also even in the StarWars universe a Parsec is know as a measure of distance apart from Han's incorrect post.

However I have seen people explain his claim as true as hyperspace causes a fold in reality meaning that it stronger the hyperspace drive the closer it pulls the start and finish with time being the static value. Then all hyperspace jumps having a fixed time it's just the distance covered in that time is the variable and measurable value.

Re: Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap Gets A Physical Release On 13th February

GauBan

@Moroboshi876 I appreciate it when a publisher supplies extra stuff for free, and yes I agree a good manual is always nice, something with some well done art work and is more than and single sheet of folded A4.

I am also a "physical only" gamers. I've steer away from most digital only mostly because of not trusting that the game will be re-downloadable in the future.

Examples being Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Turtles In Time Re-Shelled, and to a lesser extend the P.T. Demo.

I've got a large number of these games that have been given physical release after the digital copy from people like Nicalis, Limited Run and Play-Asia's EastSoft company just to list a couple. Including both Monster Boy on PS4 and Switch.

As for why I didn't wait for Nicalis to release MonsterBoy? When I ordered there was still no release date for the game in the West Arc get it out much earlier. Will I buy another couple of copies to get extras?? Resisting for now.

Re: Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap Gets A Physical Release On 13th February

GauBan

@Moroboshi876 yep just the case and the game. Do you really need anything else these days and it is the same for most larger publishers doing the same (you might also get a health and safety warning sheet).

TBH it's only the little "indie" publishers who are giving out extras as part of the standard package and Nicalis is the king of it. Best of all they seem to have stopped only giving those extras out with the "Day One" copies like they did with the US version of The Binding Of Isaac.

Re: Pokémon GO Is Dropping Support For Older iPhones

GauBan

@deKay OK a cheap Android phone. Again using the iPhone as a hotspot so still only one phone contract.

Or wasn't there a case for iPhone which had an Android device built into it. Eye Smartcase or something? That would mean you still have one device.

Re: Random: Mother Orders Nintendo Switch From Amazon, Gets Box Of Washing Powder Instead

GauBan

@readyletsgo "Amazon are the only company who just send another one."
That is something people know about Amazon and then try to take advantage of it earlier this year a couple was charged with stealing $1.2 million in electronics from Amazon buy doing similar things each time (Claiming stolen or damaged packages).

But they were clever enough to not go to the press to try and either create fake validity or force pressure on Amazon for action.

Re: Review: Touhou Kobuto V: Burst Battle (Switch)

GauBan

@justin233 I have. But more because I'm a fan of the series than expecting it to be the best game ever.

Was playing it last night for a couple of hours. While the game does come short in the current day gaming arena.

But it does have the charm of being what it is, a doujin game that was originally released in 2010, which if you're really into those style of games you will forgive the short comings.

A game only for massive fans of the series or the doujin games in general. But good to see these sorts of games coming to current consoles.

Re: Hyperkin Shows Off Working Version Of Its Supa Retron HD SNES Clone

GauBan

I would be interested if I didn't already have a working UK SNES and Super Famicom Jr.

Or my RetroN 5 and Retro Freak.

But if you want a relative cheap way to start playing SNES games from everywhere with the benefits of HD upscalling on a HDMI or use of Scopes and Justifiers on a CRT it looks like it's not a bad way to go.

Re: Celebrate The 30th Anniversary Of Street Fighter With This Pricey SNES Cart

GauBan

@speedracer216 you can make your own by sacrificing other carts. People on places like eBay and Etsy sell "reproduction" carts of tons of games including StarFox 2, English translation of Mother and Mother 3 etc.

Or there is a small company that sell programmable game boards for different systems which you dump a ROM onto and then put a shell around.

Re: Celebrate The 30th Anniversary Of Street Fighter With This Pricey SNES Cart

GauBan

@jswhitfield8 yep. Which would explain them not selling it on their UK site, even if you treat it as display piece there is a risk of someone putting it into a console, thus the small risk of fire. But as the Electrical equipment manufacturers: regulations and responsibilities page on the gov.uk site says "All electrical equipment must be safe - there should be minimum risk that the electrical equipment will cause death or personal injury to any person or domestic animal, or damage to property"

If I recall US laws are a little bit softer and a warning can be good enough depending how good everyone's lawyers are.

Re: Celebrate The 30th Anniversary Of Street Fighter With This Pricey SNES Cart

GauBan

@BulkSlash @maruse @PLATINUM7 like @Bunkerneath said this is gonna be to cover themselves due to the power difference.

But I like to think of it as a ploy to stop people from putting the game in their console. As they will be just grabbing cheap naff $1 carts of eBay to then put into the cases they have.

But if there is a risk of damage including fire it would be fun to see where they sit on the legal side as even though they has a disclaimer there is still a legal setting for persons safety. Thus selling something which is designed to be used in a specific way (Even if not recommended) could leave them in trouble. Which could also explain why the one on their UK store is out of stock, EU Health and Safety things etc

Re: Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack Is Getting a Physical Release

GauBan

@RadioShadow all retailer will tell how much VAT you are paying on an item it's on your receipt or invoice. Just because under UK trading standards any product sold at public retail needs to include VAT prices to remove any "hidden costs". I was not bringing the tax side into it as digital items are also taxed by VAT in the UK. Thus removing this as being a point of difference.

But look at a number of UK retailers and you will that their price will vary on the same item. But they all (apart from maybe Game or a catalogue shops) will be selling the game as less than the price that it will be if purchased from the eShop, PSN or Xbox Store.

But you are incorrect, Gamecollection.net is not making £22 profit on that copy of Rayman Legends. Be more around the £5 profit mark (could even be less) unless they have a great distributor.

As for cost of manufacture this is a interesting thing. While yes producing a card with larger capacity will cost more to produce but again the cost difference if marginal to the fact that publishers need to buy the carts from Nintendo. They always have had to. All the way from the NES this is one of the reasons for the "Nintendo Tax" something that wasn't as much an issue when Nintendo moved over to optical media which can be widely produced.

Re: Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack Is Getting a Physical Release

GauBan

@RadioShadow true. the typical UK game is cheaper as a physical edition compared to digital. This is due to rrp. The retailers can charge whatever they want for the game and will make it competitive.

There has been talks about cost of digital ever since it became a big thing with Sony claiming that they needed to charge full price to ensure that they don't out price the retailers.
