Earlier today Nintendo issued a new firmware update for the Switch which brings video recording, data transfer and some other goodies to the table.
However, it's not just the main console which got an update today - the Joy-Con controllers have also been issued with a firmware refresh.
To update them you simply go to Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers. Each Joy-Con will be updated separately, and if you have more than one set you'll want to connect them in pairs to make sure they're on the latest firmware.
What this controller update actually does is anyone's guess, but let us know if you notice any differences.
Thanks to Ryan Millar for the tip!

Just in time for Odyssey...
Anyone else experiencing a screen stutter while in docked mode? It started immediately after I did the 4.0 update... The screen size alternates erratically from full screen to slightly smaller--during gameplay and when navigating the interface.
Maybe this is related to the video recording option? Now the Joy-Cons register if you're holding the Capture -button.
@KoopaTheGamer good logic and makes sense but maybe they are improved as well !!!
@KoopaTheGamer The video capture worked before my joycons wheree updated so no thats not the answer.
So my pink right joycon from the splatoon set seemed to take longer than my others.
There's actually a battery in the Joy-Con, just like in the Wiimote to save data??
@Heavyarms55 The right Joy-Con has a bit more tech in it than the left one, namely: an IR sensor, and an NFC reader/writer chip. I assume it takes more data to update these things, and so it takes longer to download.
@crudfish I played Zelda for about an hour after the update and messed about with the video stuff with no issues
@KoopaTheGamer I doubt that a controller needs a firmware update to tell that you're still holding a button. It'll likely be something to do with syncing issues that some still experience or further calibration for the motion sensors/rumble
I think my joy con still loose connection every now and then. I only use them detached from the tablet when playing multiplayer, so it's not an issue I encouter much. Really hope this update fixes those problems once and for all. It's pretty much been my only complaint with the Switch.
It’s to increase stability, naturally
The left joy con updates quicker than the right one.
@crudfish If your TV is an LG Smart one, it's a TV issue constantly scanning. Change to the Aspect Ratio setting and change the scanning to Off.
You need to manually update them? They don't do it automatically? Weird. :/
@paperboy you should definitely contact Nintendo to fix the issue. I did so and they improved exponentially (I still fill they don't work as well as new ones but they now are perfectly acceptable)
@Balta666 Thanks. I actually had my left joy con replaced right after the Switch launch. I thought it was fixed, but I know I had problems after that. I'm gonna do the controller update and then play hours of Stardew Valley on end with my detached joy con instead of my pro controller. If they fail on me I'll contact Nintendo again, but I don't particularly feel like it Thanks for your advice though!
My Joy-cons can be more stable now, Nintendo-blessed stability!
Updating controllers? Has this happened on any system before?
4K Rumble
@Sinton Not sure about Nintendo systems, but Xbox One etc controllers get firmware updates every so often.
@Sinton xbox one did that. no idea about others
So this update is screwing with people's Switch? I'm thinking I might wait a few days to install it...
The Joy-Cons aren't "lovely". They're horrible and no firmware can change how they feel.
It would also be helpful if they told the public what this firmware update does.
@Yorumi Strange as I've got loads of gameplay hours out of them just fine. Sounds like [removed] just for the sake of it
@PlayedNSlayed Mind your language - Octane
I could've sworn when I first saw the update announced on Facebook it said something about being able to locate lost controllers. I just went back and checked now and there's nothing about that, but I don't know why my brain would make that up.
@Yorumi @SLIGEACH_EIRE
People with big hands might have issues. I do. When they are separate, some thumb contortions are hard in some games, but I love having them separate when I can for comfort in games where it's not an issue.
Sure, they were awkward for me at first, smaller than I expected, I'd like a bigger version, and I did get a Pro Controller, but I'm not going to pretend they aren't great controllers for the most part, because, frankly, they are.
They enable flexibility other console pack-ins don't: portable size, double as a pair of controllers, pointing device (without external sensors to line up), motion-controls that fit inside your palm.
We throw in two sets of JoyCon in the small Zelda carry case and that Hori stand, and we've played four-player Mario Kart, on the spot, with no TV. Makes these controllers pretty amazing, and the comfort issues some have make the trade off an easy win.
@crudfish I haven’t yet, exactly when did this problem occur when you updated your console? Did you have your TV Resolution settings in your console set to Automatic? What kind of TV are you using?
"if you have more than one set you'll want to connect them in pairs"
I just turned all of mine on at once and hit "update controllers." It went through every single Joy-Con I had (all the left Joy-Con first, followed by all the right Joy-Con) just fine. Not sure why you'd need to specifically connect them in pairs. It's not like they need to be physically on the console or anything.
@Heavyarms55 Mine too, regular Blue/Red console
@XerBlade I guess that's because if you left the JoyCon on an "almost empty battery" and they shut themselves down while updating, you could brick them and Nintendo doesn't want the hassle to restore them.
If you update them in pairs, while connected to the Switch, they'll be powered up for sure.
You could also buy the Charing Grip or a third part charging tower, but Nintendo has no way to know if you did, so they tell you to take the safest route
@DrTofu If that were really the case, they wouldn't allow you to update them wirelessly to begin with.
Nah, I'm pretty sure Nintendo is smart enough to have them not run the update when low on battery to begin with. Like everyone else who does these things.
By the way, it wasn't Nintendo who said that. It was this article. Thus pretty much invalidating this entire topic.
That said, yes, Nintendo does have a way to know if you have the Joy-Con on a charger. The Switch console is fully capable of detecting whether or not a Joy-Con is currently connected to power. Obviously.
Does anyone know if the joycons get updated automatically when the system is updated? I updated to 4.0.0 last night, my Switch was docked, and the joycons were attached to it while I was interfacing the Switch with the pro controller-- I guess I'll find out when I get home if I need to update them still. I would think that if my Switch can notify me that the system needs an update, it would've told me about the joycons, but I'll digress til I learn more. (Its just an extra step, and not the end of the world, but still...)
@MeloMan No, they're not. You should go in the controller submenu and manually choose the "update controllers" button
I hope this helps them strengthen the signal of the joycons... cause sometimes they don't register because of someone being confront of me or my hand because of they way I am sitting or Playing....
But it's always good to see updates on things, so they work better haha
@crudfish I downloaded the update and played an hour of Splatoon 2 docked with ZERO PROBLEMS
@ShiftyWizard Locating missing joy-con and Pro controllers has been around since the 3.0.0 update mid-June. That update also allows for zero latency plug in connections from the Pro controller.
@DillonatorWright
It started happening immediately after the update. I played around with the resolution settings, tried a different hdmi cable, and messed with TV settings. There is one screen on my TV input settings that seems to indicate that the Switch is not being recognized consistently. It says that there is a device connected, and then nothing, and then connected, etc. It's an LG smart TV.
@SCAssassin
Thanks! That was it!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
you dont even own a switch you scottish troll
@SayGuh I honestly don't know if that was deliberate or not. Still thanks for the laugh!
@SayGuh Brilliant.
I better update the four of them then. I think by updating them then on the night of Halloween they detach themselves and...
Is the update for Pro controllers as well as the joy cons?
@aaronsullivan I can wield a nexus 6 phone around with 1 hand, but I too got used to them. I think they're just fine for what they need to do, but I am definitely getting a pro controller for fighting games for sure. Everything else the joycons work perfect for.
Can anyone confirm if the joycons feel firmer after this update?
I find it slightly strange the joycon have an update, but not the pro controller. Weird.
Gods, I hope they fixed the obnoxiously loud HD rumble in the joy cons for all games.
"how can a controller realistically have a spectrum of 30 or so people absolute hate everything about it, to people praising it as the best controller ever?"
@Yorumi I'd say because you have pro controllers. I imagine, comparing the two controllers side-by-side, everyone is going to want a pro controller. I don't have a pro controller, and not one person has complained about the controller size in my sample of around 8. At least, if the size annoyed them, they wouldn't speak up and tell me, ha ha.
And well...some people just don't like negativity you know already
Plus, I don't see any problems besides the size...it's a big one for sure, but past that it's only one, besides the "control pad" thing.
@GrailUK Well they definitely feel more stable I'll say that.
@SayGuh ...and I have to apologise to Slug cos I thought he was an Irish Troll.
@Mrrabbitpuncher Thats the haptic feedback and is on purpose, so they're not gonna "fix" it
@crudfish Played both Splatoon 2 & Arms docked and undocked after update, did not notice any stutter…
glad the joy-cons got more stability now!
@Over5799 You mean they made it sound like the entire rumble thing is broken on purpose? My Joy-cons make this really, REALLY loud and high pitched "WEEEEEEEEEEH" sound with certain games, it really doesn't sound healthy. As if everything is loose inside the Joy-con.
@Yorumi When people have convinced themselves that something is good, they'll ignore any discomfort they may be experiencing from contorting their body to use it properly.
Is there an update for the pro?
It took a while to update 4 sets of Joycons at once. But next week will have another set to update.
Every once in awhile when when waking up my Switch by pulling it out of the cradle to play it in potable mode one of the joycons wouldn't wake up and connect. All I had to do was detach the joycon and press the little button on the side and it would wake up and connect so it wasn't a huge deal but it has happened several times since I got it. Maybe there was an issue there that got fixed.
@Yorumi Yes, of course! You disliked the joycons, but I feel like, at least a few people in your sample size of 30 wouldn't be complaining about them if you didn't also have that luxurious pro controller as a comparison. It's just a thought.
Who would know that the controller should be updated? I didn't know until I saw this article on Nintendo Life. There's not even a message about it on the Switch, I think.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE How much have you used them? I certainly have no problem with you hating them, but after initially thinking I wouldn't like them, and having quite large hands, I have found that I mostly use them, and don't bother with my two pro controllers most of the time. It is very comfortable having the hands separated in a natural way.
I will agree that the sideways mode isn't really great. It's a bit better with the strap, and even a bit better with the recharging single joy con grip... but it is by no means unplayable, especially for short sessions...
I'm curious if you will find your opinion shifting once you use them more.
@MasterWario I have two pro controllers, but tend to use my joy cons the most. I find them really quite comfortable, especially in the hands apart mode. Sideways grip is not so comfortable, but still playable.
@roykoopa64 I think it happens when they get plugged into the system. So, it shouldn't be a problem for many people. I have a lot of joy cons and charge them often off the unit, so yea it would be nice to get some kind of message on the unit after the update saying to plug all joy cons in for an update.
@Sinton
yeah. XB1 controllers do it. XB1S does it even using on a PC.
@roykoopa64
yes there was. I knew from the inets but on the update page in news it said to update the joycons also and told you where to go. or maybe i'm misremembering.
@trip241
Not a real place. Its like Tasmania, sure its on a map but does it really exist? Not proven, plus I read on neogaf that Eare is just the 34th shire of Scotland. Its like the DLC of the United Kingdom that nobody bought.
@Mrrabbitpuncher they might be faulty in that case.. if you go on Nintendo’s repair website you can send stuff to them to be assessed free, and if it’s faulty they’ll fix or replace it under warranty.
@SayGuh pretty accurate, there's also more pubs there than people.
"Increased stability", A.K.A. "we snuck a blacklist in there".
There, I saved you the need to look the changelog up.
@mrjakku Already done that mate. Got new ones back but the problem persists. Contacted them again and they insisted that they replaced the joy cons, written in a not so friendly email. But the customer support here in the Netherlands never are that friendly though.
Hurrah, even more stuff to update! Don't you guys love it!
@Mrrabbitpuncher Oh teah i tought you were talking to the sound of gettin a coin in MK8 and things like,
It happened on the pro controller, sometimes the rumble get weird an make a really and agresive "rumble" it happened like 3 times since i have the switch
