Still one of the best releases to be found on the Switch eShop is Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, a modern remaster of a classic game. Though a little on the short side, we were won over by the delightful gameplay and hand drawn artstyle, and the game has since acquired quite a following. A physical version has been on the cards for a while now, and Nicalis recently put out a trailer confirming the date.
The physical version of Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap will hit store shelves on 13th February, bringing with it some extra goodies to entice those who are undecided. Along with the game cartridge, the box will have a full instruction booklet, a 12-track Mini CD with music from the soundtrack, and a Lizard-Man PVC strap. It's nice to see the developers supporting the fanbase like this, hopefully we can look forward to more great work from Lizardcube in the future.

Nice. Nothing says "I love you" like a physical copy of a digital game.
No really, I'd love if my girlfriend bought me a game. I'd need a girlfriend first though.
Physical over digital always!
Eh ?!
I saw that game has been arrived at one another my local game shop Game Republic last Sunday i visited their shop.
@Kalmaro You and me both, my friend, you and me both.
I haven't picked this game up just yet, but after all the good things I've heard about it I'll be sure to get it at some point. Now for the age-old debate, physical or digital...
Nicalis are publishing it, so you can say with near certainty that it'll be very expensive.
I'm getting this day one and there's nothing stopping me.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not that much maybe, probably under $40 like the multi-language Hong Kong version. I'm getting the Nicalis version just to see if it'll come with a manual like Ittle Dew 2+ and Cave Story+.
I gotta say I am not a fan of how much later we get these sorts of physical releases. They have to understand many players will have bought the digital release by now, even if they would have preferred physical.
Same day as overcooked physical
@retro_player_22 Well The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ Switch physical release was €40 so I'd imagine that could be the price. Still, it's twice cost of the digital version. I'm trying to remember but I think I paid €25-€30 in a sale for the physical version of The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ in a sale just before Christmas so people might be able to get this cheaper eventually too.
THANK YOU!! DAY ONE PURCHASE!!
@yeayeanaynay That's largely cheap tat.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
But Isaac also had the DLC included. If you included all of the DLC pricing as well it came to something like $35 usd. $40 is a pretty acceptable price for a physical copy of Isaac in my opinion.
This game is $20 digital I believe? I will hope for 20 or $25 but I think I'll be happy paying even $40 honestly. I am so glad I put off buying this game in the hope there will be a physical copy. I'm going to go see if I can pre-order as soon as I can.
Cool cover! I'll be getting this.
All we need now is a proper new Wonderboy game. Developers?
Dunno why it gotta was t mentioned but the European version can nes st a later date, different box art and with the stuff the US version has got, I just hope ee st it quite soon
Hmm... Just checked EBgames, they still have it listed for Fri 13th April.
This is an essential purchase for Switch! Sets the standard of remakes in my book. Lizardcube to remake Metroid pweeze
Bits of rubbish in the box with the physical copy to mitigate the high cost, I hope not.
Value for money should be a consideration when scoring a game. And at just 6 hours play, the price should reflect this. The download version doesn't.
nicalis is the worst publisher.
The MSRP is 39,99. It says so in the blog post on the Nicalis website. Also has all the information on what comes with the game.

Unfortunately I'm in Europe and will probably end up paying 50 euros for it. Or wait for a Europe release that gets delayed endlessly, like that of Cave Story (that still hasn't gotten a release in Europe)
But so much for complaining. I haven't played the game yet and I'm excited to pick it up when I get a chance. Hooray for the region free Switch
@Kalmaro Honestly, it's one of the best feelings. Mine brought Dishonored 2 home, for me. Don't want to brag about my girlfriend ofcourse, but I really liked your comment.
I'd like to get an EU version but I'm not going to die waiting for it... eBay here I come
It's on Amazon UK for £34.99 for both Switch and PS4. Shows a release date of April though.
Double the price of digital.
I guess it's to be expected. I might still go for it though.
Just pre-ordered it on Amazon for 35 quid, so not too bad. Delivery is April though, oddly. It'll be the first time I've ever double-dipped to get a physical version of a digital game I already own. Cave Story will likely be the second, when I finally get around to it.
I haven't collected physical games for many years but for some reason the Switch has found me building up a small, modest collection. I'm really drawn to owning the games on this system.
Edit: oops GravyThief already pointed out the Amazon price/date.
The physical version has been available at Play-Asia from Arc SystemsWorks since last year.
I’d have probably considered double dipping into this just because the case looks good.. But not at all worth it for the asking price.
@GauBan Just the case and the game card. No manual, no soundtrack and no keychain.
Western physical editions of Switch previously digital-only games tend to be way better than japanese ones.
Pitifully I downloaded it a month ago (still unstarted though), and now I can't have it the way I always wanted it without double dipping, which I won't.
If anyone wants the digital version along with Blaster Master Zero for 20 euros contact me and we'll find a way.
Huzzah! -sparkly confetti falls- This will sit nicely alongside my Master System Originals of all the Wonderboys! I know they rejigged the original on PS4 recently, which was kinda okay, but I hope they remake more because the whole Monster World series is great.
Also, the later Adventure Island games where you could ride beasties should make a welcome return. Ooooh and Chiki-Chiki Boys too....ooohhh and (the list goes on ad infinitum.....)
@Moroboshi876 yep just the case and the game. Do you really need anything else these days and it is the same for most larger publishers doing the same (you might also get a health and safety warning sheet).
TBH it's only the little "indie" publishers who are giving out extras as part of the standard package and Nicalis is the king of it. Best of all they seem to have stopped only giving those extras out with the "Day One" copies like they did with the US version of The Binding Of Isaac.
@GauBan Well, that's another debate, but yes, people like me, that like their games in physical editions, appreciate the extra contents, of which manuals shouldn't really be considered extras just because publishers stopped making them.
These editions have value for gamers who grew up with physical games, but if someone isn't fond of that because is too young or for any other reason prefers digital games then no, it doesn't matter if a game comes with or without manuals, extra gifts or in a game card for that matter.
@Moroboshi876 I appreciate it when a publisher supplies extra stuff for free, and yes I agree a good manual is always nice, something with some well done art work and is more than and single sheet of folded A4.
I am also a "physical only" gamers. I've steer away from most digital only mostly because of not trusting that the game will be re-downloadable in the future.
Examples being Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Turtles In Time Re-Shelled, and to a lesser extend the P.T. Demo.
I've got a large number of these games that have been given physical release after the digital copy from people like Nicalis, Limited Run and Play-Asia's EastSoft company just to list a couple. Including both Monster Boy on PS4 and Switch.
As for why I didn't wait for Nicalis to release MonsterBoy? When I ordered there was still no release date for the game in the West Arc get it out much earlier. Will I buy another couple of copies to get extras?? Resisting for now.
Also something that I couldn't see in the article (apart from video) 13th Feb is only for the US version. 20th April is the current PAL date.
@GauBan I understand.
I was tempted to buy the Asian version too, but in those days the digital version was on sale, and I fell for it. About 10 euros vs 30+ was a no-brainer. And yes, the Western retail edition was announced, but no date then, and no guarantees about the contents.
Now I regret buying the digital one because the retail edition is going to be awesome.
Gamestop's website says it'll be $39.99 (plus applicable tax) for the US.
Glad I waited for a physical version to be released. You can't beat those box covers!
@Saego Don't be ashamed, sounds like a keeper!
@BensonUii The game will be available in Europe through Headup games. Pre-orders are not officially started tho.
Is it worth $40? I prefer physical but only when it's worth it.
@GameOtaku I agree, because of resale value. I've run out of space though! :'-( I have to go digital.
I was waiting for this release! Preordered!
Fantastic! I have heard a lot of great things about this game but I love my physical media. I just pre-ordered this from Amazon. Waited for Rocket League and I'm glad I waited for this.
I like owning my games, not licensing them. =)
